We've been camping every may for the last five years at clippesby now, I'm not one to moan but the place has become vastly overpriced, and very commercialised to what it was a few years back. £53 per night for a family of six is just a bit to much, it's risen £ 20 per night in four years, the toilet/ shower facilities cannot cope with the amount of campers, the place desperately needs new showers, and from the money this place rakes in It would be no problem. Yes it's a lovely part of the country, but there are others around at around half the price, this year we encountered drunken groups wandering around late at night coming from the pub in the middle of the grounds, the place has really changed and I'm sorry to say its time for a change next may.

I am slightly confused about this site. I went there for the early May 2013 Bank Holiday, off the back of many great reviews on this web site to be honest. I think I must have been dead unlucky with my pitch or expected too much though. Or I must be missing something, as it was OK at best and actually it’s not a site I’d recommend necessarily. My reasoning is as follows.

Expensive.

It cost £37 per night for 2 adults, 2 kids in our caravan on a serviced pitch. I have been to many sites across the region, with this being the most expensive per night I’ve used. £111 for 3 nights. I did leave it late and there was apparently one single pitch available, so we took it. We pitched on the Meadow, pitch 126 I think it was. The van was on hard standing and awning on the grass. The pitch was fairly level although some along there did have low chocks to level up. The level of the stones is below the level of the grass, which sounds like no issue but what a pain that was, with the front of the steps on the grass, with the caravan steps falling back into the stone dip. Very awkward for getting in and out of the van.

Fully serviced pitch.

Could have sworn the lady on the phone told me it was fully serviced including TV point on the pitch, so I opted to leave the aerial at home. Arrived and found this was not the case. There was a grey waste drain and tap, with hook-up too, obviously. I must have been mistaken with the aerial and the weather was so great I really didn’t mind but worth checking, when you book.

Toilets.

I was told the showers and toilets were no more than a one minute walk across the area known as The Orchard. This was patently untrue. The Orchard is a large tenting field and there is no way to cross that field without crossing pitches and guy ropes. It just isn’t possible when packed tight. So you have to follow the stone road and path round. The path diminishes and you have to cross a final pitch, or walk along the road way (gravel) round to the loos. I’m a physically able and fit 40 something years old and I managed to stride up there and get to the showers/loos within 5 minutes. With a 7 year old in tow, allow 7 or 8 minutes. May not sound much but actually I’ve been on little CL sites at £10 a night with no on site facilities beyond grey waste and hook-up. With the loos being such a hike away, this is basically what we had here but for nearly £40 a night. If you have little ones, be aware that you may have a long trek with bathroom stuff. And if the block is closed for cleaning, the next one is approximately 5 minutes further on. The Meadow and parts of The Orchard seem under served for loo’s.

There are 3 toilets and 2 urinals in the gents. Nothing worse than queuing for the loo, with a queue behind you too.

On the Bank Holiday Monday we were leaving and had to be off the pitch at 11am. Between 10 and 11am is the prime time to use the site facilities after packing up, emptying the caravan toilet etc. Normal cleaning time Was 10:45 for half hour. On this day they closed the loos at 10am right when everybody on the park wants to use them, to get cleaned up, let kids have a last wee etc. Before leaving for the journey home or onwards. My wife and another lady complained to the lady cleaning but were met with short shrift and told the other toilets are only five minutes away and these had to be cleaned before new arrivals. What about the existing customers? My poor daughter was hopping from foot to foot for a wee and it’s the little things like this that colour your view of a site. She’s seven, we just emptied the loo in the van to go home and they decide to close the loos in the final golden hour as people are packing up. Not a great plan and not well handled.

Showers.

4 unisex showers in the main block. Serving hundreds of pitches. Not enough is it. Queued every time, except the afternoon we beat the rush and got over there at 3pm to clean up after a morning at the beach.

Swimming Pool.

Was opened up for the Bank Holiday. Not heated though and very cold (despite the decent May weather at 19/20 degrees). Probably lovely in the summer albeit a little small.

Kids areas.

If I had my old Trailer Tent I’d have happily pitched up on The Orchard at the top end in the sun and near the loo’s. This would have also been within striking distance of the kids play areas, the main play field and a few climbing frames, zip lines etc. I felt awful as this was literally a 9-10 minute walk for us and whilst I’m OK with my sensible 10 year old son exploring a bit wider on site, I was not comfortable being so far away from the kids areas with a 7 year old, who I don’t want to let out of my sight on her own. Especially as the gate for the pool (near the playing area) was open and there was no life guard on duty (they did tell us this in fairness, as they opened it for the bank holiday sun). There were loads of little kids up there, far younger than my daughter and this always makes me worry but this is not the park’s fault, if parents are oblivious to the risk of 5 year olds playing by a swimming pool with no guard.

I should have read the coded use of “quiet area” used to describe The Meadow (which is not the meadow the name may invoke in your mind - it is simply two rows of pitches). This area is clearly not geared for kids of 10 and 7 and is actually the single furthest point for touring vans, or tents, from the kids areas, playground etc. If your kids are older, or you’re happy to let them wander the ¾ of a mile required, across the site to play, fine.

In summary I really am not happy when I read this review back. I am aware I sound like one of those moaning types who picks up on all the negatives but this was our first trip out in the van this year and I was OK paying the money I paid, even though nearly £40 a night is very expensive. If you feel you are getting great value and have great facilities, on hand to your pitch, it’s all OK. When you pay all that money and have the niggles and issues we had with facilities etc. Then it becomes important and you notice when things don’t feel like great value.

For me, I would not go back to Clippesby, nor would I recommend it, unless they built an additional amenities block. I did speak to another chap there who said he loved it and they’d been three years running. Why is that? I asked him. The showers are sparse, not that clean and you have to queue for the loo’s at any point of the day it seems. Yeah he said, you’re right it is pretty poor but I’ve been to a lot worse so don’t mind. Fine for him but for me at £111 for three nights I set my bar a lot higher and like to go to sites that are excellent rather than simply better than the worst.

I have already booked a local, familiar, site for the late May Bank Holiday which is still pricey for a serviced pitch but comes in at £7 per night less, with plentiful facilities, a manned pool and loads going for it. That’s 20% lower than the nightly rate at Clippesby Hall, which is money I’d rather spend on my kids.

Just stayed the one night here and didn't experience too much of it while here, but what we did experience was excellent. We were going to arrive after their office hours, but were able to pay over the phone, and when we did arrive a note was left on the office door clearly showing our spot.

Our plot was very spacious with an easy leveled (could have been a little more leveled maybe) tarmac area, surrounded by a grass area. A little ordered for me, but it was very well laid out, and they had sensible booked out alternate plots so people were well spread.

Shower block was amazing though. Black slate and chrome finish shower cubicles, lovely and hot, but more impressively a nice changing area in front of each shower, with a seat and plenty of hooks (can be so annoying when there are only one or two!). Hairdryers were provided, and the whole block was Well heated (it was pretty cold, with a harsh frost the night before).

Very well managed.

We came here for a weekend once the school holidays had finished as it was fully booked for the holidays.

We had a lovely pitch in the Heath area, it was a nice small area surrounded by trees near the family bathroom. The area wasn't fully booked and it struck me that if it had been, it would have been a bit cramped as the pitches didn't look to be that big.

I was a bit bemused about the layer of hardcore and bark that had been put down but considering how wet our site was as it didn't get much sun until late afternoon, the site probably needed something to stop it turning into a bog. We put down a footprint tarp to protect our groundsheet but wasn't impressed to find on packing up that a piece of bark had pierced through not just the tarp but our groundsheet as well.

The bathrooms and showers are great, plenty of toilets and showers. I'm told there was a queue at 7am but it didn't affect us very much! They were immaculately clean throughout and it's a nice touch having a bath available. Useful if you have shower-shy kids!

There are a couple of play areas, one of which is a Bewilderwood style affair with zip lines, including a toddler one which was much appreciated by my 2 year old. The other area is near the swimming pool and is a more traditional thing.

The pool itself is a nice facility but it's not life guarded and has no changing facilities. There are signs up saying no more than 15 people in the pool at any one time, but no-one was policing this and at one point I counted 27. It seems that some people spend all day in and out the pool without any care that other people are waiting to use it. I sent my husband in with the kids as it looked freezing, the looks on their faces when they got out, suggested I had made the right decision!

I don't know what the on site pub is like as we didn't go in it, but the people in the next door tent said it was lovely and the food was well worth the visit.

The breakfasts in the cafe are great, we sat outside and ate sausage and bacon baps while watching people on the mini golf course. My husband then gave our boys (age 5 and 2) their first golf lesson, they really enjoyed having so much on site to do and there was lots of space for them to run around.

The pizza's could do with a little improvement though, it's nice to be able to get a takeaway pizza on site but if they have to pour the juices out of the box before you pick it up, it's not a good sign! From experience, they need to use slightly more pizza dough to make the base a bit firmer and use drier ingredients. They tasted nice though!

It's what I call a very 'green' site, there's lots of grass and trees and although it is a big site, from the way it has been designed, you don't really see a lot of other campers.

The staff were ver friendly and helpful and the guide to the Broads you are given when you check in was very helpful. We found lovely places to visit, have lunch (The Waterside at Rollesby is brilliant) and even went to see some seals. Horsey beach is very close by and it was very special to be able to walk along the beach and see seals in the wild.

Would definitely go back, but maybe not during the holidays when it's likely to be very busy.

We have just spent a week at Clippesby Hall in their Rabbits Grove area. The site has everything you will ever need, the best facilities we've ever encountered at a camp site.

For a price.

We paid nearly £50 a night to stay here (2 adults, a 9 year old and 2 dogs)! For that sort of money the facilities need to be spot on. They were. The toilet blocks were always clean, with plentiful hot water, paper towel holders were always full, so was the loo roll. Lots of bins around for rubbish and dog poo bins a plenty.

The bar was fine, good ale and good food (book in advance as it does get busy), entertainment most nights and a great games room attached (take plenty of 50p pieces for the continuous pleas from children!)

The pool was small but perfectly formed, solar heated they said when we arrived, that means it's warmer on a sunny day in the afternoon as I saw no solar heating panels, just the sun on the water to 'heat' it! Play areas all over the place with zip lines in one.

Unfortunately there are no dog walking areas so you need to get off the site to find somewhere for our four legged friends to get a run around. We have stayed at a David Bellamy credited site before of the same standard and there was a sectioned off dog exercise area where you could let your dog free to play ball etc, we would of expected the same of this site considering the cost! The staff were helpful and very friendly, bikes are available to hire too. There's a putting course (£2 a round). The cafe is good and very welcome after a long drive.

The pitch we had was mainly gravel with some grass and well spaced out from your neighbours, we set up on the gravel but then found that under the gravel there appears to be a solid layer of hardcore which was very difficult to get standard pegs through. We ended up extending the guys to the grass so we could get the pegs in. Each peg in Rabbits Grove has a water tap and drain. Nearly every pitch (maybe all even) has access to an electric point too, ours only tripped once (toaster, kettle and heater are too much for it!). Peaceful nights, every night as there is a no noise policy after 11pm which was adhered to.

Be careful with your phones, we had no consistent signal (Orange and O2) but were about to take advantage of the WiFi in the bar until we saw it was £5 a day! Sites we've visted in the past have provided free WiFi when there's no reception so £5 a day is a bit of a rip off IMHO.

Locally there's all the Broads attractions, Great Yarmouth if that's your thing (not ours, too gawdy), Winterton beach is lovely for a day out if a bit windy. For a great day out in a traditional seaside town try Cromer, 30mins away and worth every second of the trip.

All in all a great site, in a lovely area. But boy do they charge for the privilege of staying there. My heart says we will go back as it's so lovely, my head says no way will we return as it's very overpriced.

We visited Clippesby for the very first time with another family last week (camping) and found the site to be very welcoming. We were dealt with immediately upon arrival at reception and staff were very efficient and attentive.

The whole site is laid out over a large area and we were in the 'quiet' Heath at the far end of the site. A good description as it was very quiet with the benefit of no traffic passing by which other areas must experience.

Other campers were observant of the rules for quiet from 11, with the site quietening down earlier from 9. 30 onwards. We were quite disappointed to be shown to a double pitch that, due to wet weather the day before was very muddy and also uneven and slopey.

We noted that other pitches within the Heath were flat and that they appeared to have been treated with wood chip in areas perhaps to deal with the mud, but alas not our two pitches. Due to ther sloping and mud we were forced to pitch away from the marked areas and we were still on a slope. Not ideal.

The facilities for children are excellent with two zip wires and a zip wire for very young children. There is also a very good playground, nice swimming pool with 'spa' style kiddies pool which we took advantage of twice. Because we were in The Heath the play areas were a long walk for the children but they didn't seem to mind and we relaxed about the distance after 48 hours of being there!

The pub was very expensive for a camping site and we felt ripped off with the soft drinks. We ate in the restaurant on one night and the meal was very good, very prompt and there was a good menu for kids. As a vegetarian disappointed that there were only two main dishes for veggies - a curry or veggie burger. It would be nice to have four or five veggie choices so if we had decided to eat there more often I wouldn't be eating the same thing each time.

Washing facilities. Mixed feelings on this. They were modern with hot water always available. There are also cubicles with a loo and wash basin which is handy. The showers are detachable which was good (not many are!) and the shower cubicles were nicely tiled and modern. However, my 6 year old was scalded when the water suddenly, without warning, became burning hot. This was reported to the attendant but I don't know if any action was taken. The nearest shower block to us was also, inconveniently, closed between 8. 15 and 9. 45 each evening when my children were just ready to go to bed which meant an 8 minute walk to the other end of the site for another shower block. Another washing facility is sorely needed as woefully inadequate for the number of pitches. Only 2 showers in ladies and 2 mixed, 1 bath, 1 disabled.

Local attractions: Clippesby ideally placed for beaches - recommend Winterton on Sea with its sandy beaches, nice cafe, reasonable parking (£4 for the day). Norwich a lovely shopping centre with great shops, nice cathedral and lovely restaurants, cafes etc. Use the park and ride. Very good! We hired a motor cruiser for the day - £55 for 8 people. A bargain!

Avoid Bewilderwood - hideously expensive for a family of four £54 and that includes two adults who dont even use the facilities!! You don't need to leave the site too often because it has everything you need if you are a family. Nice site!

Another fantastic visit to Clippesby. Great campsite.

Stayed on pitch 91 on south park, conveniently located for loos/washrooms, playground, shop, laundrette etc etc.

Staff incredibly helpful and cheerful. All facilities in good working order.

Kids loved the freedom of being able to ride their bikes safely around the campsite, loved the wooden play area and the bike trail.

Campsite conveniently located for Norwich and its cinemas, bowling, shopping and those wet day activities. Plus convenient for Gt Yarmouth and the surrounding areas beaches.

Great days out at thetford forest (about 40mins away) and bewilderwood, boating on the broads.

Booked already for 2013! So highly recommend this campsite!

Spent a week at this lovely site. We were on The Meadow which is lovely the site is split into sections but all the pitches seemed very spacious which we were pleased about as this was our first outing with the caravan. The pitch was fully serviced which was very good. Toilet and shower facilities were well kept. The Muskett Arms pub did food which was really nice with extremely generous portions. We hired bikes for a couple of days and were given maps of various cycle paths to follow which was very helpful. The staff were very friendly. We will definitely go back to this site again.

Just back from a very cold and wet Easter holiday camping holiday here, and a good time was had by all.

I can only back up all previous good reviews - go!

Large pitches, several camping areas so the site doesn't feel big, great landscaping, good loos / wash facilities.

The kids (and the adults!) were happy for hours on the bike trail, zip wires and tree houses.

The on site pub served really good food, with a good children's menu. The kids were amply entertained by the games room (pocket money price games in here)

Staff were friendly and helpful throughout.

It was nice to go somewhere that our dog was so welcome, too.

We will go again without hesitation.

We stayed at Clippesby over the Easter weekend and had a lovely time. We were booked into the newly 'refurbished' Rabbit's Grove area on a fully-serviced hardstanding pitch. Unfortunately it took 5 adults (including 2 Clippesby staff) pushing our twin axle to get it onto the pitch owing to the way the area had been laid out. Having said that, the staff really were more than helpful and in chatting to our neighbours said they are going to be redesigning that area as other people had had trouble getting on to their pitch as well, and they only had single axles!

We found all staff friendly and helpful. We enjoyed cakes and drinks in the coffee shop and meal in the pub (a little pricey but very handy and of an overall good quality). The children enjoyed the bike hire and playing on the zip wire.

The site as a whole was quite muddy as there was a fair bit of rain over the weekend, and consequently the loo facilities were a bit muddy at times, but only to be expected. Apart from this, they were spotlessly clean even on the Sat/Sun when the site was fully booked.

Despite being fully booked, it was never noisy and evenings/night were quite.

There are lots of separate areas to the site to suit all types of camper.

We went to Caister to check out the beach in case we return and the sun's out - a lovely long beach and a friendly cafe owner on the beach!

We took the children to Pettits Animal Adventure Park for a very pleasant few hours. It was cold and raining so we virtually had the park to ourselves! We did feel it was a bit expensive for what it was (£46 for a family entrance)but maybe we're out of touch for what these places charge these days!

Overall, we had a great time at Clippesby and would definitely return.
