We spent five nights here on a fantastic deal through red funnel ferries. The site is so well kept, lovely and tidy and the toilet block/showers/washing up sinks are excellent and super clean, quite possibly the best we've come across on our camping trips!
The staff are very helpful and friendly. Our children did enjoy the play area hidden in the forest and would disappear for hours if we let them to build dens and play.
There were a few issues with this site; due to the tall tress our pitch only seemed to get sunlight for about half an hour a day, usually when we were away. We also got a little concerned when thunder storms were forecasted or when it was windy, but put that to the back of our minds! The site is also next to a busy road as previously mentioned in other reviews, our pitch was in the row adjacent to this road and it is noisy, although I think other pitches further away from the road would be quieter.
The site is in a good location to tour the isle, its close to a Tesco and Mc Donald's, both proved useful! We also enjoyed a pleasant walk to the beaches at St Helens (took a couple of hours) with lovely views. The site has a little walk around the edge, where you will find a hide, if you wait quietly here a few minutes you will be rewarded by a visit from some red squirrels, something our children loved!
A great, dog friendly, clean and tidy site, just ask for a pitch away from the road!

A really lovely site that we would be very happy to return to. The staff were extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful and I felt slightly guilty about walking into the toilet block with muddy crocs on as they were always kept so spotless! There was some noise from the road as others have mentioned but that didn't bother us although I can understand that it may not be ideal for some. The site, while not having any specific facilities for children, was a fabulous playground for our 3 sons - we hardly saw then as they were off playing in the woods.
We only stayed for a weekend as we were attending a party in Ryde and as such didn't use any other local facilities (pubs etc. ) but I am sure we will return to this site and use it as a base to tour the island a bit more. Highly recommended!

Our second visit here for a fortnight's break and once again it was very enjoyable. Without covering other features already mentioned, the main pluses for us are the excellent washing facilities and the helpful and highly organised owners - on the busiest few weekends of the year they were highly efficient and getting visitors on and off pitches but without being overbearing or officious. Everywhere is kept very clean and tidy and they obviously care for their customers.
Only minor quibble this time - bad mannered campers driving too fast around the site (maybe a few speed bumps would slow them down), owners letting dogs roam free (again, against the site rules but some people ignore them) and the tumble dryer is rubbish. But the minor nature of these problems show that it is very hard to find faults with this site!

Very friendly staff and very clean toilets and showers. When I next go to isle of wight I will be returning to this site. 10 out of 10. This site is dog friendly and in a good location to vist other parts of the island.

Just returned from this site, (literally)!
Booked through red funnel ferries and got a good deal, also managed to get on earlier ferries there and back and a really nice company to deal with.
My first piece of advice is to follow the directions the site give you as the sat nav was determined to take us along all the narrow roads! Trusted in the good old paper map after that!
Anyway, after much scraping of the van's sides we arrived at the site a whole hour early due to being put on an earlier ferry, however despite this we were greeted and shown to our pitch, (probably wouldn't happen in peak season though!)
Nice site with lots of nice greenery and woods surrounding the perimeter. However be aware that you are quite close to a main road and would therefore recommend that you ask the owners to situate you at the far right hand corner of the site if you prefer something a little more peaceful. I am a pretty heavy sleeper so the road noise, when it did occur didn't really bother me.
It's a nice walk around the edge of the site through the woods with a squirrel hide halfway, you won't be disappointed as within 5 minutes of sitting quietly we spotted the first of several red squirrels, which was lovely!
The location of the site is approximately a 10 minute drive to Ryde beach itself and a 5 minute drive to the tesco store. We did ride our bikes once but due to the road being so busy outside the site we didn't attempt it again. There is a bus stop outside the site which takes you into Ryde itself if you want to leave your motorhome behind, and they did appear to run quite regularly.
This site is a bit more out of the way of the main attractions of the island than I would like, but it was a nice site with friendly fellow campers enjoying some much needed R&R. However, if I returned to the IoW I would try and book something a bit nearer to the coast as I am a bit of a beach bum and hate having to drive around in the motorhome to get to places!

Just had a fab week here through Red Funnel Ferries. Very easy to book and a fantastic price for 5 nights with hook up and ferry crossing included.
The site was easy to find and was a peaceful site with an abundance of thrushes, blackbirds, blue tits etc.
The showers were a dream and I've never seen such a clean shower block and toilets. The only downside is it is close to the main road which is noisy at peak times.
The highlight of my whole time on site was the wonderful red squirrels that could be seen on the feeders outside reception.

It was a horrid day, pouring with rain when we arrived. As we took the turning from the main road, I really didn't expect the type of campsite that we got.
Anyway drove in and as it states the campsite is in a woodland setting. It was miserable cold weather and I think the warden was feeling the pain of such an awful day this close to the end of the season. And I don't blame him!
As you can imagine the weather made the site look bedraggled and cold but read on.
My first impressions of the site was quickly replaced with WOW.
Pitch was a reasonable size, didn't use the hookup but came as part of the pitch, but the shower block was just excellent, cant say any more than that. Very clean and modern. Showers were hot - the site is well laid out and in nice weather it would be perfect to take a stroll around the marked paths, sadly the weather wasn't up to doing this which was a shame.
The site as a whole was clean and seemed quite popular with larger motor homes.
Site took dogs and I didn't think was too expensive compared to others we had stayed at and a short distance by car is a Tesco.
Would certainly stay again if we visit the area, hopefully in better weather so we can enjoy the surroundings
I didn't really take note of child friendly surroundings as to be honest that wasn't needed for us, but even though it was a huge site (again this wasn't apparent until you saw the site plan) we didn't seem to come across lots of peeople or children but that could be down to the weather.
Pitches are inter mingled with the trees so it feels smaller than it is.

We stayed on this site as part of a ferry-and-camping deal on offer by the Red Funnel shipping company.
As its name suggests, this is a campsite set amidst tall trees that screen it from the adjacent main road. I confess that we don't normally do forest campsites, preferring open spaces and stunning vistas. As such, we did find the location somewhat oppressive, not helped by the fact that we were allocated a north-facing pitch that gleaned precious little sunshine at the time of year we stayed. However, I accept this is very much a personal preference and that many campers adore the seclusion and intimacy that forest sites afford.
The pitches themselves are arranged in large, spacious terraces (grass or hard-standing) so that very little effort is required to level a caravan. That said, although it didn't rain during our stay I got the distinct impression that our particular pitch may well be prone to waterlogging were the heavens to open for any prolonged period.
Whitefield is a well-ordered, well-maintained and friendly site that is ideally located for touring the island. Ryde, Newport, Sandown and Shanklin are within an easy drive and there is a Tesco superstore to be found five minutes up the road. Cyclists should note that the stunning little boating harbours of Bembridge, St Helens and Seaview are all within a not-too-strenuous bike ride along the bridleways that connect the site.
The main Ryde-Sandown road is pretty busy, although noise (particularly at night) shouldn't be an issue. However, it curves into a steep bend at this point and turning right onto it from the access road off the camp can be a bit hair-raising - especially with a caravan on the back - given that some drivers bomb down it at speed.
The shower and wash block is excellent: clean, modern and well-appointed, and with shower cubicles that are large enough for a parent and child to shower together (notwithstanding that there are separate family shower rooms anyway). There are washing machines and a communal drying area nearby (esential if you are unfortunate to be on a north-facing pitch!).
In summary, Whitefield is a model of how campsites should be run and we would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a base from which to enjoy the marvels of this wonderful corner of the British isles - providing, of course, that you are a fan of forest locations.

Wow what a fantastic sight - best we've ever stayed at. We are a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 children aged 13 and 11. Owners were helpful. Freezer blocks were 10p each to freeze. Pitch was huge and we've got a big tent and cooking tent and still room for car. Showers were amazing with constant hot water.
We used family washrooms which had toilet, sink and shower and were always free and clean. Loads of washing up sinks again with constant hot water. Mens and womens washrooms had 6 showers each, 3 separate lockable wash basins and about 6 toilets and hairdryers, again all were kept clean.
The location was amazing, surrounded by beautiful trees and we even saw a red squirrel which was great. The kids playground was brilliant, really well thought out with plenty for older and younger children to enjoy.
The main road was quite near and you could hear the noise from the traffic which didn't really slow down at night but it wouldn't put us off going again (if you are a light sleeper I suggest earplugs which I used and I didn't hear a thing) - infact we are going back next year as the Isle of Wight is brilliant with so much to do. A week was not enough. Massive Tesco Extra about 2 min drive down the road which was great if you ran out of any essentials.

Just back from 5 nights at this fantastic site over the bank holiday weekend.
I have to say this is the best site we have visited. The good points:
* Friendly and helpful staff - easy to book and check in and very knowledgeable on island matters and the forest etc.
* Lovely clean, well maintained and flat and spacious pitches, all staggered in terraces up the hills so you are slightly higher than one neighbour and lower than another.
* Shower/washing facilities were modern, spacious and plenty of hot water day or night. Couldn't have asked for more. We stayed over bank holiday and although the family bathrooms were in high demand we managed to get one without waiting and never had to wait in the shower block.
* Good kids play area - it felt nice and safe and kept our 4 year old entertained.
* Great value for money and no minimum booking period during school holidays. We are a family of 3 with a big tent. We normally get penalized for having a big tent but on this site you pay per person/dog or extra car/tent. We really only do camping for weekends and often struggle to do a short break over bank holidays or during school holidays. Not a problem with this site.
* The location is fab, just down the road from a large Tesco and Mcdonalds. Also perfectly located to be able to head south to beaches of Sandown and Shanklin or north towards Ryde. Also great for exploring the downs across the middle of the island.
Drawbacks.
Well none really, there was some noise from the road but we went on the August Bank Holiday - the same weekend as one of the biggest scooter rallies in the world so the 'pop pop' of the scooters coming off the ferry and buzzing down the road on the Thursday evening was audible but once they had settled into their rally they were no problem - the park didn't accept scooters so we didn't have any problems associated with that, and it was quite fun scooter spotting when we were out and about!
The only other thing is that the shop only stocks the basics, and only orders the papers to fulfil the orders from campers, if you don't order you don't get one. But it is open for at least 12 hours and day and if the worst comes to the worst there is a huge 24 hour tesco about 1/2 a mile up the road. Suppose the drawback there is that it is Tesco's and not sainsburys!
Would we go again - of course we would. We even booked to go again for the same dates next year. We absolutely loved it - thanks Whitefield Forest!
