Our party consisted of 2 adults and a toddler - we have a campervan and an awning and booked a hard standing pitch for 4 nights over the bank holiday weekend.
We used Wightlink ferries to get to the Island from Lymington to Yarmouth. Everything went to plan there. The journey from Yarmouth to the site took about 30 minutes thru Newport.
Upon arrival at the site we went to reception and were given a genuine welcome. The reception had pamplets of places of interest/things to do etc and a very small supply of grocery essentials.
A newspaper facility was available for those wishing to pre-order. There were gas bottle exchange/sale facilities and ice pack freezing facilities for a small charge. Reception is mainly manned from 8.30am thru till 5pm however on the Friday the notice board said 8pm so I guess it varies depending on the season/occupancy.
We were shown to our pitch and all the pitches are massive! Every pitch has hook up with plenty of water taps and bin areas around the site. I was a bit apprehensive about booking a 'forest type site' expecting it to be dark and over shadowed by trees but this was open, light and very well spaced out. I think there are about 90 odd pitches mainly grass but with about a 3rd hard standing.
Despite being on a hard standing the tent pegs went in the ground and we errected our awning half on/off the gravel and half on the grass to one site of our pitch. The vehicle access/road paths operate on a one way system and everybody respected the 5mph speed limit so there were no concerns when our toddler was playing.
BBQ's have to be on bricks or raised from the grounds for obvious reasons. The grass was well maintained and in immaculate condition. No campfires are allowed due to the forest setting.
The site is peaceful and the owners of the site have created a wooded walk around the perimeter of the site. There are loads of red squirrels in the forest and there is a little lookout built in the wooded area to sit and observe the wildlife which is lovely especially as they have erected a 'squirrel playground' which even includes a swing for them!
Tesco is 0.7 of a mile away, its a 24 hour Extra store so has everything you could possible need. I would not recommend walking along the main road from the campsite to the store as there are no pavements but the lady at reception told us of a walk through the adjacent field and onto a bridle path which we did and it only took 15-20 mins by foot to get there.
We took a buggy and it was a problem over the hard ground due to the small wheels but if you had an urban buggy with large wheels you would be fine. For those with mobility problems there is a bus stop out on the main road offering a good service in either direction.
Now, for the most important bit. The loos and showers, amazing! There are obviously mens and ladies with shower facilities in each section. Fanatically clean all the time with plenty of loo roll and handwash.
There was unlimited hot water and in each shower cubical it had a small changing area and stool with several clothes hooks. In the ladies there were a further 3 private cubicles with just basins. 2 hairdryers were in the ladies - free of charge.
I'm guessing the gents is the same but my husband cant remember! Additionally there were 2 family shower rooms with loos in and a special disabled shower room with wheel-in shower facility. Again, all fantastically clean, fresh and new.
There was a laundry room which had a washing machine and dryer (tokens available from reception) and an iron was available from reception with a £5 deposit. There was even 2 washing lines with pegs available which is a brilliant idea! (first time I have seen this!)
The 4 washing up areas did get busy at peak times however there was a further 4 sinks being installed and virtually looked finished ready for use within days.
The play area was all natural and made from wood, there was some tyre swings from the trees and a toddler swing, a see-saw made from wood, some assault course type frames and some monkey bars. All the kids seemed to be having fun!
From previous posts some folk have mentioned about some road noise and train noise in the distance. It really is nothing to be concerned about. Our pitch was the closest to the edge of the forest (therefore closest to the road mentioned) and we hardly noticed it so please do not be concerned. These people really are nitpicking!
The whole design of the site is fantastic and well thought out. I would definitely recommend this site and wouldn't hesitate to go back. It's positioned in the middle of Ryde and Sandown so very central.
Blackgang Chine was a fun day out with unlimited returns within 7 days. We did the Needles and Shanklin. From Ryde we took the electric railway to Sandown which took 15 mins and cost £3.30 each return (2yr old free). As it was raining one day we also went to a very large indoor play center for our little one called 'Space Island' which is in Sandown.
Finally. If I had to find one negative thing it would have to being the height of the mirrors in the ladies where the hairdryers are, I'm only 5' and had to stand on tippytoe to see myself! I guess a very tall chap hung those mirrors!

What a lovely site in beautiful surroundings. Made most welcome although we had 3 dogs instead of the usual two.
The site was clean and the toilet block well decorated and immaculate. There is a woodland walk where you can see red squirrels if you are lucky.
Not too far from a dog friendly beach. Mostly people of a certain age as early season that was a bonus to us as no children with us.
Will certainly visiting again and cannot recommend it highly enough. Nice pitch with part hard standing. Good space for each unit.

I agree with what has been said about this site already in other reviews.
I stayed 4 nights and had not booked (this was not for the want of trying though - it may be worth mentioning here that if you are phoning to book, try during office hours). However the welcome was good and and I was accommodated with the minimum of fuss.
I am a lone traveller and like to be near other people and the loo block - this was not a problem; and I was even asked if I wanted to be in the sunshine or a shady spot, which I thought was a nice touch.
Found the campsite to be in a beautiful location and the facilities always very clean. Also very good value for money. Road and train noise is noticeable but I did not find it too intrusive.
I did have a preference for the family shower rooms which had normal adjustable showers. The showers in the ladies block kept going off every 15 seconds and you could not set the temperature (both of which I found most annoying!).
That said, hot water on the occasions that I did use them was plentiful and the clean cubicles were of generous proportions. There were also 3 additional cubicles for those folk who wanted to have a private wash at a sink.
I liked that there were 4 washing up sinks outside and the paths were lit up at night. Due to my short stay I did not need to use the laundry room but it also looked nice.
Did have to go hunting for the water points which was confusing at first (a couple more would have been welcomed) but this again is a minor niggle.
The 24hour Tesco just up the road was very useful, not least because they seemed to have one of the cheapest petrol prices on the island.
Overall would I stay here again? Definitely!

This camp site sets the benchmark for all camp sites. Like all the other reviews left I can not fault this park. It has everything anyone could want for a perfect camping holiday. The location in the woods is just the perfect setting for a camp site. My son loved walking though the woods looking for red squirrels and following the wildlife signs and information dotted around the site. The facilities are better than any other site I have visited. On the down side there is no shop on site however Tesco is a 2 min drive. I will hope to be back to this site for many years to come.

This campsite is what they should all be like!
We had a very friendly welcome from the owners and were shown to a large well kept pitch for our ten night stay at the top end of the site, surrounded by beautiful woodland.Host to a great variety of wildlife. In particular, red squirrels and dragonflies.
We could hear the Island railway, but it wasn't annoying, and traffic noise was minimal. And we were there when the international scooter rally was on!
The reception area is well maintained and sells a small selection of food and drinks. Newspapers could be ordered, and there was a book swap shelf. Calor gas is also on sale.
The facilities were superb.Spacious showers and loos, private vanity cubicles, hairdryers, separate family bathrooms and disabled facilities. These were immaculate at all times.
Drinking water and waste water points were plentiful, as were rubbish bins which were emptied twice daily.Recycling was practiced. EHU is available on each pitch.
A Tesco Extra is five minutes away by car and Ryde town centre, esplanade and lovely beaches about ten. There is also a bus stop just outside the campsite.
Bembridge, Sandown and Shanklin are all in close proximity to the site and just a little further on is Ventnor. Where we had a fabulous meal at The Spyglass Inn.
The Garlic Farm is well worth a visit if only to taste the garlic beer and rhubarb, pear and garlic ice-cream!
In fact, the site is very well placed for sightseeing the whole island.
We will most definitely be re-visiting.

Just back today from a week at this site. Here is our review.
The pitches are very big, much bigger than we've had before. A great setting in the forest, and midway between Sandown and Ryde. As others have said, there is a little road noise but it is tiny, in-fact you can hear the Island Railway much clearer in the quieter hours, (not an annoyance either). The shower block is superb, modern and spotless, with family shower rooms a big bonus. It was a very family friendly site, a very safe site, and the people using the site seemed to be very respectful to others regarding noise, (not a peep after 11pm).
We will use this site again, as we've stayed at many others on the Island and none come close.
Plus points:
Well located
Close to Tesco's
Clean
Great shower block, you'll never queue
Friendly and respectful atmosphere
Improvements (IMO):
Only 4 washing up points, need 2 more at least, got very congested at times
No WIFI coverage for us internet junkies, only at reception
That's it!

Just come back from a 5 night stay and can not fault this site!
The shower blocks and toilets are kept spotless and the family shower rooms are a big plus.
Loads of wildlife to see in the forest seen red squirrels everyday, having 2 excited children to keep occupied no probs with forest and play area.
There is a little road noise but this is like most sites on the island.
Great base for exploring Ryde as it is only 5 mins up the way by car or bus.
No negatives!

Overall a very good site.
Booked through red Funnel ferries as part of their camping offer.
Friendly and helpful owners, excellent facilities (only one CDP next to entrance to site though)
Tescos few minutes drive up the road.
Red squirrels frequently seen on site and around reception on bird feeders.
Free wifi near reception, was able to pick it up down to pitch 5 also. Ask for code at reception.
Well located for visiting Bembridge and St Helens. Would recommend the Bugle Inn at Brading.
Just a couple of comments;
Showers are fixed head/push button style and shower the whole cubicle despite the screen (can only comment on womens block).
Pitches 1-10 are at the bottom of the site next to a wood yard and nearest to the road, we were on pitch 7, smallest pitch in the row and had a fair bit of both wood yard and road noise.
Would use again.

Just returned from 5 nights at Whitefield Forest (booked via Red Funnel). As said in previous reviews it is absolutely superb especially with the 5 days glorious weather which we were blessed with.
The bus service from outsite the site is great (every 15 mins. To Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor)-we didn't move the van for the whole stay.
One very minor point we thought would be useful would be a few more water taps and grey water drains around the site. We will certainly be returning in the near future.

What a fantastic site.
This was our third year here and each one has been as good as ever.
The pitches are in general very large and individual and for the most part grassed in a terraced fashion on this wooded gentle hillside site which is sheltered buy tall trees.
It has an immaculate toilet building central to most of the pitches with roomy cubicles. Water points are next to the one way site gravel road which can be steep for the less athletic in places.
Staff are pleasant and helpful.
Prices are very good too if you include the ferry.
One down side is the access lane which is unmade and can be very dusty and the junction with the main road is on a fast bend so beware! The good thing is there is a bus stop here which can slow traffic a little.
Another was that, when we visited, the chemical loo point was about as far away from every pitch as you could get, which, if your the furthest away up the hill its a long slog. But if you can, there's the loo block which is nice and near to everyone.
We left it too late to book for 2011. But This site will take a lot of beating.
