This was our third visit to Dornafield. We were absolutely blown away by it the first time we went in 2009, and we are going again in March.
There are two areas for tourers at Dornafield, all are fully serviced. Buttermeadow and Blackrock Copse, the latter being the posher of the two. As has been said in other reviews, Dornafield is expensive in high season, but not unfairly so. The sheer facilities on offer and absolute quality of them rate all the plaudits they have received. From the owners down to the two wardens, I doubt you will meet anybody as friendly, knowledeable and helpful. I don't think I have ever seen anybody smile so much.
There is a strict arrivals and departures routine that must be adhered to, and with good reason. The lane leading into the site is extremely narrow with a couple of tight bends. Nothing to worry about, its easy enough to negotiate but not against a stream of caravans coming in the opposite direction.
Most pitches are flat and all are hard standing, one or two in Buttermeadow have a slight fall at both front and rear which could make your awning stretched, but in the main, all are brilliant. In Buttermeadow, all pitches have electric, waste and fresh water, and a waste bin shared between two. On Blackrock Copse they also have a TV connection point, chemical emptying point and waste bin. Short of a milkman delivering to your pitch, you couldn't ask for more.
If you have children, there are two separate play areas, both very well kitted out. There is a tennis court, huge play filed and a dog walk. A playroom is located near reception, which is good, it keeps the kids away from the vans and also keeps them under the eye of the owner. An information room and well stocked shop complete the ensemble. There are other nice touches, a herb garden from which you can help yourself, and an orchard, where you are welcome to pick some fruit, and leave a donation.
Finally the showers, two separate blocks, larger than you would expect with more than enough of everything to go round. Spotlessly clean at all times. Washing up facilities and a laundry are also included.
Are there any downsides. No, not really. The lane can be challenging at times and some pitches would be tight to reverse a large van onto, but the owners are always ready to help with a special tractor. The pub at the end of the road has a good reputation, but we have been a couple of times and found it pretty average.
All in all, a real gem of a site and here is a hint. If you go low season, they have an offer of £89 per week all inc. In summer this prices rockets alarmingly, and that is all that would stop us using Dornafield in summer. The area surrounding has much to offer, Dartmoor is but minutes away, so too is the coast.

All I can say is 'WOW!'. Yep, this is probably the best campsite we have ever stayed in! Yes is was also one of the highest prices we have paid but my goodness was it worth it!
The lovely hot showers, the loos, the shop and info areas, the pitch (with water and hookup and bins for each pitch!)were perfect, and the truly informative chap who we called beforehand to book us in made us feel well attended and welcome - even though we arrived too late to register at reception. (our info pack with directions to our pitch were left in the visitor info room).
It was very busy but they managed to fit us in the first night, and when we decided to stay another night they found us and equally ideal pitch.
What really made this site for us though was the people - our neighbours and the people who work and run the site. The first morning we woke up to find our neighbours preparing a bacon sarnie feast for their friends and the staff. Everyone was really friendly and we felt right at home straight away! There was a real community feel about the place.
We will definitely be going back without a shadow of a doubt!

2nd visit to this site but during the busy season this time.
Apart from there being more people we noticed no difference in the standard of the facilities and helpfulness of the site.
The shower/facilities block is right next to the camping field. There was a queue of 2-3 mins for a shower in the ladies if you hit a busy period but if you timed it right this could be avoided.
Despite this the showers stayed very clean as just about every person mopped the floor over after themselves. The washing up area only has 4 sinks so got very busy too but again if you picked the right time you could avoid queuing.
There is a hair dryer (20p) in the toilet area but also two sockets so you can bring and use your own. The toilets/showers are cleaned daily at 11am and are closed for about an hour. You can however got up to Blackrock Copse and use those facilities if needed during this time.
Despite the camping field being full it had quietened down by 10:00 and was silent by 10:30.
The fish & chip van was exceptionally busy on the Wednesday but I think this was more due to them having a couple of big orders. The food was very nice though and worth the wait. (All the food is freshly prepared for you as you order)
This site is ideally situated for visiting the whole of Devon, not just the south where it is located. A visit to the information room is a must to find things to do as well as details of local pubs, takeaways and information on the local area.
There is space in the middle of the camping field for some games but it is not sectioned off at all so you can find balls flying towards your tent if they are hit a bit enthusiastically! Also it is right where everyone drives in and out.
Next door in Buttermeadow there is a large grass area that is surrounded by hedges and better suited to ball games. The two play areas in both Buttermeadow and Blackrock Copse are excellent and you can safely send children off to play in them.
Most pitches slope towards the centre of the field (some quite drastically) but all have flatter areas towards the front of them. This does of course help with drainage and despite some heavy downpours our pitch never got sodden.
If you visit the Asda store in Newton Abbot, try to go after 6pm as you don't have to pay for parking then. Bread, milk and other provisions can be ordered at the site the day before you need them. There is a little shop with odds and sods that you need and the staff are always happy to help you find what you need if they haven't got it.
We had a meal at the Two Mile Oak at the top of the road and it was excellent. The food was lovely and the service was A*. We managed to get a table without booking as we were there early and it was a Monday but you will probably need to book if going later in the evening or towards the weekend.
We cannot fault this site and will be back again.

Great campsite, lovely facilities, close to lovely, friendly market town. Owners friendly and happy to help, nice grounds and play area for the children, showers etc more than adequate.
Very convenient location near to beautiful towns of Totnes and Newton Abbot and not far too travel to beaches and moors.
We would recommend this campsite to families with children of all ages - also nice pubs nearby, and within walking distance.
Also a shop on site which is very convenient for essentials. Newton Abbot has several supermarkets to choose from nearby.

Visited this site for 9 nights during the last week of July, group x4 adults in x2 large tents with EHU.
We had 9 nights without a spot of rain (believe it!) which was a good start!
We stayed in Orchard which has 16 tent pitches (x8 having EHU).
The pitches are not completely flat but are well segregated and very (very) generous, so finding a level pitching area is not a problem. The Orchard field also has a large central space which is good for kids playing etc. Generally so much room on this field to afford all peace and quiet and privacy. Great!.
The facilities are nearby and are of exceptional standards (toilets, showers, wash-up, etc).
The remainder of the camp is equally well presented with excellent facilities and a very laid back and peaceful atmosphere throughout.
The courtyard / reception / shop is beautiful, and the staff equally helpful without being too fussy. There is also a games room and information room.
Weds, Thurs, Friday eves there is a Fish + Chip van in operation which is worth a try.
Whilst we were there there was also a charity social night in the courtyard, with Burgers, Guest ales, Magician, Music, Morris Dancers etc. Proved to be good old fashioned fun, very well attended and a credit to the site owners.
Overall I cannot recommend this site highly enough, plus in a great location for days out to Torquay, Paington, Brixham, Plymouth, Dartmoor etc etc.
For cyclists the surrounding roads are quiet but beware this area is full of hills. We also did the 'Plym Valley Trail' which proved to be a nice steady and scenic ride (started at Clearbrook and cycled to Plymouth and back. About 25 miles all-in with some road sections).
Eating and drinking; Tried a drink at the 2-mile oak inn (1/2 mile away) which seemed OK. Had a couple of nights at the 'Union Inn' Denbury (about 1 mile away) inc. A meal and a quiz night, the food was great, the beer very good and the staff and general atmosphere was great. Highly recommended. We also ate at the 'Bickley Mill i
Inn' (half-price lunches!) and was superb. About 4 miles away I guess.
In summary. Superb site, great area. Well recommended.

Arrived at this site out of hours, easily found our paperwork that had been left for us with instructions. Stayed in Orchard pitch no 5, a very decent size!
I thought it a beautiful and peaceful well laid out site.
Facility blocks, showers etc were spotlessly clean, will say bug bear was push button on showers but that's all.
Onsite wardens very friendly and pleasant.
Two good size dog walking areas and children's play site.
Shop well stocked with pretty much everything you would need.
Didn't get to have fish & chips from on site van but the smell coming over to us was wonderful, will defo have some next time!
I have to say that this was my first camping site, so have no comparisons as of yet, but, all in all I think anyone who stays here would not be disappointed, I will surely come back!

The narrow lane approaching this wonderful caravan site is very busy at anytime of the day so beware if you book to stay here as we narrowly avoided scraping our van on a tight bend.
Now the good news, this site is probably the best site we've stayed at in our 14 years of caravanning due to the care and attention the staff pay to their customers.
We stayed on the upper part of the site called Blackrock on a hard standing with a shared chemical toilet disposal, fresh and waste water points.
The toilets and showers are immaculate and even though we stayed at the peak time of the year the facilities were never full or untidy.
The site is 8 miles away from Torquay and Paignton and is also in a good position to tour Dartmoor and Plymouth.

We stayed on Blackrock Copse for nearly 2 weeks and had such a great time we didn't want to leave!
We arrived just after noon and were welcomed by Bob who was very informative about the site and local area, he quickly checked us in and took our order for a paper and milk for the next day. We loved where our pitch was, right next to the dog field which was handy for our 2 labradors. The dog field is a good size, totally fenced in and doggy bags are even provided. The other dog walk on the site is larger with one flatish field and another hilly field with great views across the valley.
The shower and toilet block was spotlessly clean, warm at all times and Radio 2 played on in the background which I liked. The showers were a good size with a bench, enough hooks for clothes and a shelf for your toiletries - all well thought out. I used the laundry room for handwashing and even used the iron! There are washing machines available which included powder in the cost, another thoughtful idea which saves you having to buy some.
The grounds of Dornafield are beautiful, very well maintained and clean and tidy. It's such a pituresque place and that is thanks to the owners and staff who maintain a very high standard, one day I was sitting outside and observed a member of staff cleaning the wooden rails outside the showerblock and wiping the cobwebs away, it's that level of attention to detail that makes the difference at Dornafield. They have pride in their work and it was lovely to see.
Our pitch was level with hardstanding for our twin-axle and awning and a grass area to the side and we had a lovely stone wall to one side which was a nice feature.
The road to the site is single track with passing places but we didn't find it difficult to get to the site at all and I loved all the narrow lanes, it's one of the things I love most about Devon.
The biggest thing we noticed about Dornafield was the atmosphere, everyone was so friendly and frequently stopped for a chat, lots of people had been several times before which speaks volumes. We'll definitely be booking for next year.
We thought the site was ideally placed to see Newton Abbot, Dartmoor, Torquay, Dartmouth, Plymouth and Exeter, pretty central all round for sightseeing. Newton Abbot is about 10 minutes away and has a large Tesco and Asda there.
While we were at Dornafield our gas regulator in the caravan stopped working so my husband asked at reception if they could recommend anyone, they did and we gave him a call, he came out and had it replaced within half an hour - brilliant service

Stayed with friends for a couple of nights here. Lovely site. The ladies toilet was one of the biggest I have ever seen, with privacy cubicles, plenty of loos and a lovely area to do your make up and hair and a separate area for showers.
They had good recycling and two different camping areas, a good little shop that you could order fresh bread and milk it also stocked, every thing you could possible want for a stay on site, even caravan bits and bobs with newspapers so OH happy
Quite a walk to the nearest pub- 10/15 minutes according to age, no footpaths. Did not use pub but menu looked good for food which was also where the bus stop was into Newton Abbott.
Was plenty for children to do and a tennis court for the younger end
Will definitely use again if in the area.

The site is lovely and the welcome you receive is warm and friendly.
We stayed in The Orchard, tent field, we were very impressed with the facilities, the kitchen area was spotless, showers and toilets again spotless and warm. Boasts 2 play areas for the kids both with wendy houses, big hit and a play area in the woods which you got to by a path or climbing up through a fort!
My only let down was the tent pitches though large on 1 side of the field were on quite steep slopes and ours (pitch 13!) had rather large rabbit holes which made pitching the tent in a usable space a bit hard and a concern with kids running around the tent that they would fall.
The site is very quiet and by 10pm at the latest the tent field was quiet. Lovely start to morning hearing birds sing in trees.
Fish and chip van on Fri and Sat night which we indulged and was gorgeous.
All in all a really good friendly site, excellent for children, just watch the sloping tent pitches and rabbit holes.
Would go back again
