I have just returned from 3 days camping at the site. We booked to stay for 1 day and then another and then another! I went with one of my daughters (12) and my son (3) and also my dog (7months). It was my son's first time camping so I was hoping all would go smoothly. We arrived at 1.45pm on a Wednesday and the site was pretty full. Despite this we managed to find a recently vacated pitch in the family field that was perfect.
The weather was glorious, the site was level and the ground firm and free from rocks.
The facilities were clean (and cleaned regularly) and well situated. The men's toilet block has about 8 urinals, 6 cubicles and 8 showers. It was never full and always plenty of hot water. There was an indoor washing up area with about 8 sinks. The on-site shop was open for hours on end and stocked everything you could possibly need - tent/camping equipment, food, sweets/snacks/ice-cream, gas, milk/eggs/bacon/sausages. Really friendly staff too.
I had heard that the shop prices were high but I found them to be pennies (if that) more than high street supermarkets.
Great local walks and great local pubs. Old Dungeon Ghyll is closest and you can get to it by walking through the camp site - thus avoiding the road.
The family field has a kiddies activity centre in the middle - ropes and log poles etc etc and also has a small stream running down one side. Its only 2 or 3 inches deep in most places so the dog and my kids loved cooling off in there.
I'd heard mixed reviews about this site, mostly good but some only average. I can quite honestly say that this is the best site I have been to, and I have been to many. Its very similar to the Wasdale Head site but closer to towns such as Ambleside, Bowness etc.
10/10 from us and my little boy now loves camping - what a result.
Note: - The noise curfew of 11pm is strictly adhered to and works really well but (for those who like to retire to bed early or have small babies) kids are playing and screaming around the family field until 30 seconds to 11pm ! More a result of inconsiderate parents than the camp site management.

I visited this site with slight trepidation as I don’t like the typical large sites that sort of take away that rustic view on camping; on your own in the middle of nowhere.
Although the site was clean and very accessible, it just wasn’t for me, I found it too crowded with most of the tents within 6-7 feet of each other, and most of the pitch fields are along side the path where all the cars parked, which was a problem when trying to sleep with headlights going through your tent.
The toilet blocks and showers were clean and worked efficiently, the showers were hot and powerful; if I got there early enough (6.30 am) there wouldn’t be too much of a wait.
The views are really nice but the site does seem hemmed in by vegetation restricting seating level views, I assume this is to soften the noise within the site.
I found the site rather expensive for what you get, paying by the person, tent, and car.
I have been to other campsites that are far better on the eye for a lot less of the price; the facilities may not be as good as Great Langdale in terms of hot water and parking but for me camping is all about views and serenity.
I imagine later on into the season this site would be better as it wouldn’t be as crowded, but with it closing in Winter, I feel that that is a big negative, the National Trust obviously have their reasons for doing this but I personally feel its missed income from the all year campers.
A great campsite for climbing as there are plenty of crags etc within walking distance and the walking within the Langdale valleys is a great day out.
In all I would say the campsite was 6/10, it would be a 7-8/10 if it wasn’t for the overcrowding and late night car trips.

We found the camp site after looking for scramble routes. We read the reviews on this web site and headed down. We were very impressed with the site. The location is utterly stunning, even in poor weather the views along the valley are wonderful. There are a few points you need to know. As the pitches are not marked finding your own space is hard (especially if you have a large tent). When the septic tanks are emptied the smell really drifts across the site. As long as you pitch away from the blocks its not too bad. The noise curfew at 1100pm was well observed. Of the three (yes three) pubs within 5 mins walking distance the Tavern is the best by miles (food and beer). The shower blocks are great, plenty of hot water, great drying room and washing up room. The shop on site is small but well stocked with bread, bacon and sausage (everything we needed!). There is no mobile phone signal in the valley which is fantastically refreshing! The whole site is excellent, it may not have electrical hook up but it more than makes up for it with sheer tranquil peacefulness. I have never felt so disappointed about having to leave a site.

To me, this is a fairly average campsite in an outstanding location.
The facilities are OK, certainly functional and not dirty and falling apart but not among the best. The fields themselves are prone to flooding and severe waterlogging. The septic tank stinks as you walk past it. The recycling bins are sat on a quagmire.
The site is very pretty, set sensitively and unobtrusively in an area with mature trees and a stream flowing through. I like sites that keep cars off the camping fields - it helps the whole 'camping' feel of the place. Superb views up to Crinkle Crags. Rabbits bound around the camping fields, as do chaffinches and jackdaws. Decent pubs nearby.
It's quite pricey I think. Two people in a 3-man tent is the sweet spot. Go on your own and you pay through the nose, take more than a 3-man tent you pay extra, take a dog you pay extra, set up a gazebo you pay extra. Take an extra car you pay extra.
But, all in all, the site is difficult to beat for walking/climbing/enjoying the view from Great Langdale.

What a great site! We've just returned from spending 4 nights and would definitely recommend this site as a base for visiting the lakes. We pitched on the family field which had a small adventure area in the middle that our boys loved (6 and 4 years old). Plenty of free, hot showers and toilets, never full. Plugs in the loos for hairdryers. Ample washing up space, handy shop, if pricey, and a life-saving drying room for when the boys got over excited in the stream. Friendly staff. Loads of walks which start from the site. Exceptional views! Very handy for Ambleside, Hawkshead, Windermere and two pubs within a mile serving food. There was some noise from the adjacent group field but this always calmed down by 10.30pm so not a problem. A great holiday for parents and children.

What a fantastic campsite! It was clean, friendly, never had to queue for hot showers and there were even sockets in the toilets for hairdryers etc-for free! Wish I'd known that before though! The views were amazing and such a fantastic base to go off walking. It poured with rain the whole week we were there but we still had a fantastic time. The drying rooms and tumble dryers helped to dry us out though. Really liked the fact that there was a separate area for families as we were in a field with all other couples so it was quiet. The wardens were really helpful and with 1 pub and 2 hotels to eat / drink in in the middle of nowhere is an added bonus. Definitely recommend it. Only downside is that it is down a long, winding, almost single track road so getting anywhere else isn't that quick, but hey its the lake district-what do you expect?!

We visit all year round come rain, snow, high winds and sunshine. Excellent site just been this weekend (march) starting to get busy. Loads of walks and the scenery is second to none and the beer in the old dungeon ghyll is superb! Site facilities are very good with free showers, drying room, wash area for pans small, shop that caters for all your needs. Friendly staff and it is a national trust site. All round very good and highly recommended. Ambleside is only about 6 miles away with all the shops expected for the lake district. Gaynors is a massive outdoor shop that sells absolutly everything.

Stayed here before on a couple of occasions and always worth returning. The worst thing about the site is the fact that it can become waterlogged very quickly in heavy rain, even flooded. There is a shop, toilets, showers, and a place to wash up your pots and pans etc. Facilities all very clean. Great walks all around, and the birdlife is very tame, with blue tits and robins willing to eat out of your hand. The shop is expensive so take plenty of stuff with you. If you do need to shop you can go to the co-op in Langdale, about 3 miles away. There is also a dedicated family field if you have kids. Very quiet with beautiful surroundings, and of course the nearby pub, The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. Bus service drops and picks up right outside the site if you're not driving.

This was our first stay in a tent! We arrived when the reception / shop was closed so pitched up and went for a walk. The wardens do a sweep every morning to make sure everyone’s paid and displayed.
The toilet / washing up facilities were always clean and there was plenty of hot water in the main block. There is also a drying room and a gas bottle exchange service.
Your out in the middle of nowhere so take everything you need, the shop sells milk and most things though just in case. Out the back of the campsite the is a really nice pub but charges a premium as its the nearest place to eat and gets full of walkers coming off the hills early.
We stayed for two wet, cold and windy nights but loved it!

We stayed at the campsite the last week in September and had the best weather yet.
The last day was very wet and rainy but we still managed an impressive walk around the local area.
The campsite although busiest on Friday / Saturday was still fairly empty and facilities were superb - better than we could have imagined.
The showers were warm & powerful. There is a laundry on site and the best feature a drying room enabling you to have a warm & dry towel & clothes.
There are two shower blocks and the one closest to the shop has disabled facilities.
The views are spectacular and if you take binoculars, as we did, you can watch the people on the pikes around you.
Great Langdale is an excellent base, the facilities are brilliant and clean and the staff friendly. Should you want a first class campsite you should aim to at least spend one night here, however if you prefer 4 * hotel facilities don't.
Thank you Great Langdale - we will be back.
