Mountain biking trip with the lads

On arrival quick book in, 2 tents and 4 adults, was a tad pricey at nearly £80 for 2 nights, as we were on the just turn up field.

Ground hard and stones as others say. Managed to get tents up and also a gazebo.

Biking done that day, we got the BBQ going and that later doubled as the fire pit. Great it was allowed, ok so long as no grass damage.

We pitched near the services block, so great as always rained the next days.

Always loo roll and great free showers always available.

Bins easily available as well.

Drying room was in use, a great thing to have on Site.

Shop seemed well stocked and staff friendly.

We visited the pubs on second night, food good.

Beers also good. Watched the England match.

Enjoyed the area and the site and will return. Thanks

This is one of, if not, my favourite campsite (having stayed here 6 times I think so far in 2012). It does have its faults, but they are vastly over-shadowed by it's good points.

The site (level and well draining even in rain, and sheltered amongst trees), is well laid out, split into different fields for different types of campers - groups / families / large tents / camper vans, and each area has an easily accessible toilet / shower / potwash /drying room block.

The reception (manned by friendly, helpful staff), doubles up as the shop which sells essentials and is open later at weekends.

The site is within walking distance of 3 pub / restaurants all within 10 minutes walk - The Stickle Barn is the only NT run pub in the world.

There is no noise from the outside world, and the rule of quiet after lights out was always adhered to.

For hill and fell walkers, this is an ideal base for so many walks, Langdale Pikes, Crinkle Crags and Bowfell, even Scafell and Great Gable are in easy reach from here.

The site only has two very minor down sides - the water pressure in the showers at the west end of the site struggles a bit when the site is near full, and the cattle grid makes a noise (at night) when cars come back onto site. Small prices to pay for a great site in such an idyllic location.

Stayed here with my fiancee and dog for three nights. We had booked online and after being charged for the dog we also had a five pound booking fee which took the total to £63. This is steep for camping, but in my opinion this is one of the best sites in the lakes.

The shower block is always clean and the showers are free. Ths shop sells all you need including handy maps of localwalks and is competitively priced with the local co-op in Chapelstile.

My only two negatives to this site are you can only pitch-up after 3pm and if you have pre-booked your pitch is chosen for you. This wasn't a problem as we could easily move, but after the price I would expect to choose my own pitch.

I agree with the other comments on the stickle-barn pub's food it is overpriced, but the range of ales did make up for it.

Langdales great charm is its location if you walk, bike or climb then this really is your playground and if your in the National Trust, then most Parking will be free.

A new factor the Bas$£%$ midge seems to be making its way down, the site shop does sell a full selection of repellent which will be needed!

Just returned from this site and would rate highly. Facilities are good, view of Scafell Pike and others is amazing, when weather permits. When we visited the site was not busy. Not getting too close to tents is a great idea. Keeps the noise down and stops the field being churned up as you find at some sites.

Plenty of showers and hot water, shop has all the basic needs and the staff are all friendly and helpful.

Its well out of the way so especially good if you like the quiet life.

On arrival the warden was friendly and once we found our pitch, I was impressed with the site layout being nicely sectioned out for different types of parties. Family, Groups, Couples etc.

The site facilities included a shop which stocked everything you would need including information on local activities.

The toilet block was adequate and always clean. However I think in comparison to other sites I have stayed on these could do with updating!

We visited the local Old Dungeon Ghyll and Sticklebarn many times and have never felt so welcome and more at home.

We also spent a day at Ambleside, which is excellent for outdoor shops. Everything that walkers, climbers and outdoor enthusiasts could ask for!

Overall a great site, lovely location as plenty of walks straight onto the mountains from the campsite.

(For my full review scroll back to May 2011)

Since first reviewing Great Langdale campsite, I have returned several times so here is a very brief update.

There have been a few minor changes since my last visit in the winter including the facilities blocks being redecorated, trees pruned, and new signage. The entry barriers now operate on a keypad rather than a swipe card.

For new readers planning to visit the site, I repeat my warning about the very stony ground - you must take rock pegs and a decent heavy hammer.

As before, I found the staff very friendly and helpful. The little shop continues to offer basic provisions, fresh milk and freshly-baked baguettes.

The wild rabbits seemed less in evidence this year (though the grass is still cropped very short) and a couple more camping pods have appeared.

During this stay, it rained heavily and I noticed again that certain areas are prone to 'pool' with water. So be careful not to pitch your tent in an obvious depression in the ground.

As in previous visits, the facilities were kept very clean throughout my visit, toilet rolls and paper towels were replenished regularly, and there was plenty of hot water. Also as before, I found the drying rooms (one in each of the two facilities blocks) a real boon.

The site's noise curfew at 11pm was not rigidly enforced during my stay; also, several campers lit open fires contrary to the site rules. I feel such infringements should be more effectively dealt with.

Another, related, change is that the Stickle Barn Tavern pub a mile down the road is now owned and run by the National Trust and this is highlighted on noticeboards on the campsite.

Great Langdale remains a well-run campsite with very good basic facilities in a superb mountain location. It is still one of my favourite sites anywhere in the country and I can continue to heartily recommend it.

I arrived early on Saturday and having never stayed before at the site was not sure to expect. Normally I stay at a site further down the valley which is much cheaper but basic, however my friends who were coming wanted hot showers etc. I was met by superb staff and was taken quickly to my pre booked pitch. The site was great for my two days of local walking. Very clean, campers stuck to the quiet by 11 rule, shame some children didn't understand the no noise before 7 am though ! Not a problem, same everywhere !

We all had a great time and being so close to The Old and New Dungeon Ghyll pubs plus Stickle Barn the site is superb as a base. Given the weather it wasn't a surprise to see fully booked being raised ! Well done The national Trust

Arrived late afternoon to find that my brother and I (who had just come down off Striding edge and were fairly tired!) had been put in the family field for some reason. The children running around didn't bother us that much, but would have preferred some peace and quiet.

The toilet block was clean and well stocked with paper towels and toilet rolls, the staff were friendly and helpful, a good level pitch, and the views absolutely stunning!

The nearby Stickle barn pub next to the Dungeon Ghyll Hotel serves very mediocre and overpriced food, but the range of beers was good.

The walks in the valley are great, but very busy, and if you want a bit more tranquillity you will need to start the car. We walked up to Stickle tarn on the Sunday morning and there was a steady procession of people doing the same thing. However, many come straight down again, so if you continue your walk from there it will not be so busy.

A highly recommended site, in fact we have already booked to go back in July to walk Crinkle crags, but will take our own food and a bbq rather than get caught at the pub again.

Stayed here for 2 nights, cant buy the scenic view, especially when you woke up in the morning, , although we were freezing, the sun came out and let us appreciate the beauty of nature!

Love to see my kids' face when my daughter saw a sheep near our tent and when my son chase all these rabbits just in front of our tent.

There is a shop and cafe with lovely soup just when you get to Great Langdale. There is a shop on the campsite as well with all the basics.

Hot Shower and toilets are clean and free! Staff very friendly, let us hanged about and took our time during our last day which is good, we didn't feel we were so rushed to leave at 11am specially packing our Kalahari 10;

Hubby said we will go back there, , and next time, , we will be really geared up for walks

Fabulous campsite in the most popular area of the lake district. We've been here many many times before, always in a small tent.

We come here mainly in Winter and the facilities are always working and very clean. There are multiple toilet blocks.

There's a little shop on site and the warden is very friendly.

You can't use your car next to your tent but there's plenty of parking and its close to the pitches.

The pub across the road ODG - is one of our absolute favourites. A must visit! Great food & ales.

Great campsite - well worth the money.
