Wonderful spot! The scenery is spectacular. Lots of lovely walks. Well worth a visit. Facilities basic, but sufficient. Shower block can be a bit chilly, small shop well stocked. Wardens really helpful. The family field is great, including a play area in the middle sheltered by trees. Three pubs in walking distance, all serving food. Always worth remembering that the Lake District can be very wet! Be ready for anything and you'll have a great time.

This is the first large site I have visited, normally go for small low key no frills sites, but overall I was very impressed. The site is quite small for the 300 pitches it says they will take, over 3 areas main camping area, groups and families everyone generally camps in the one main area, which by all means can take the tents however huge problems with parking your car here. The shop is very good has most things at a price, is only open for a short stint in the morning and again in the evening, operating hours do vary a great deal though from what is posted on the door. Stayed Tuesday - Saturday so got a taste of both worlds really nice during the week, not to busy always showers and hot water no hassle at all come friday this soon changed and the showers wouldnt work, if more than two are on the go then there is no water pressure at all and the soak away began to smell. Dont particularly like not being able to book but we arrived on Tuesday so knew we shouldnt have problems, sign however went up pretty quickly on Friday to say it was full so people planning on arriving friday night certainly would have problems getting a pitch. Another thing to remember is if your arriving mid afternoon when the shop is closed and you will see a sign saying to pitch up and the warden will come round in the morning, pitch and go back later when the shop is open DO NOT wait till the morning because as we watched to great amusement for us but not to the people who he was doing this to, he will shake your tent at a very early hour to high heaven until you get out to pay him! Overall a lovely site though couldnt have asked for more, location is fantastic scenery is beautiful and a walk to scafell pike from here is about a 20 mile round trip but a very short one at that took us about 6 hours and we certainly arnt that fit. Chapel stile down the road has a small co-op and a brilliant pub, however hard to get a table so arrive early, Stickle Barn tavern about 5 mins walk as you turn right out of the site, you will pass it on the way in, serves good food, ate there twice, what ever you do watch out for the birds they are somewhat over friendly and very sneaky at getting food of your plate, they have it all figured out so dont be fooled by the cute Little bird letting you touch it in front of you they have other agenda's

It's the head of the Langdale valley wonderful place. I think the price of a pitch was very reasonable considering the facilities provided. First night was great, nice and quiet. Woken in the morning by noisy Rooks. Friday night, not much fun being woken up at 23:30 with a load of noisy people. Some were just arriving while others were returning from the pub. Still a lot of noise well after midnight.

We spent the Easter Bank Holiday here and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The campsite has 3 separate areas with one for groups and one for families. We camped in the family area which had a great atmosphere and loads of children making friends and playing together. The family area has a small collection of trees in the middle with a childrens play area running round them. This is a fantastic idea as you can easily keep an eye on your children whilst you have a relaxing drink at your tent! Our 4 year old had a fantastic time and didn't want to leave. There is a well stocked shop on site and the campsite staff are all very friendly and helpful. The hot showers were a wonderful luxury and were kept clean by the hard working staff. Groups are the only people who can book ahead, which is the only downside. The campsite did get fully booked, although it was Easter so was to be expected. Despite being full, the site was busy but not overcrowded. Did I mention the views??! I suppose it goes without saying in the Lake District, but you really are surrounded by the most stunning scenery in this place.
We will definitely return again, and again, and again!

Picked this site because of the reviews on this website. Yes, it was heaving, yes, there were occasions when I wanted to kill drunken people wandering back from the fabulous local pubs.
However, the separation into sections for groups, families and others works really well, the toilet and shower block were always clean and shiny, and the luxury of hot showers with lockable doors was not taken for granted.
Also appreciated the eco friendly attempts, with the shower on timer switches...shame the lights in the toilet block are not switched off by anyone.
Never camped in the Lakes before, and now won't be camping anywhere else. Stickleback Tavern was warm, welcoming and served fine food. Felt perfectly happy breaking a pack of cards out in there ;o) Finally, the views. Beat last weeks pitching at the bottom of Tryfan and that has to be saying something!

Whenever you visit Great Langdale, you can never fail to be impressed by the sheer imposing beauty of this area of the lakes. Tucked deep in some of the highest mountains in England, is enough to deter the majority of day trippers than can overrun more accessible lakeland areas.
However, from Easter through until mid autumn, brings the inevitable surge of campers, complete with screaming kids, gas bbqs and slabs of stella. The effect on the tranquillity of this site in summer is devastating. At these times, escape from a feeling that you have become part of some kind of mad engorged Millets annual camping show is difficult to shake off - walking for some hours in to the surrounding mountains will probably be your only respite.
However, come here in winter and all is different. Gone are the day trippers, the fair weather campers and holiday makers that didn't book Benidorm in time. Those that make the journey at this time of year, when the weather conditions can be severe, are well rewarded. In place of the family tents and gazebos, you will find a calm so rare anywhere in England these days. What campers there are will be of a likemind - there to soak in the utter majesty of the surroundings. Finches and robins will fearlessly fly down at your feet, as if in a Disney movie, and eat bread crumbs - honestly, they do!
Bizarrely, even a motor-scooter club had decided against their usual haunt of the seaside resort and turned up resplendent in their Mod jackets and bemirrored scooters. Presumably, even hard men scooterists cannot fail to be blown away by the breath-taking surroundings of winter Langdale.
Great Langdale is an amazing place whenever you go and a truly great site out of season - enjoy!

What can you say about this site? This is a wonderful location for a campsite - placed at the end of a verdant and highly dramatic valley. Langdale is surrounded by mountains and imposing hills, and there is a genuine feeling of isolation. It is hard to believe you are in overcrowded and heavily urbanised England when you come here. The National Trust look after the site well, and there is a handy shop and 2 very impressive shower blocks. All lush and green locations receive a lot of rainfall, so the facilities here are very useful. These include a drying room and free hot showers.
This was my 12th visit to Great Langdale and probably the best one so far. The pubs nearby are superb, particularly the Old Dungeon Ghyll and the Britannia (in Elterwater). Despite the pretty ferocious weather conditions (minus 5C one night and driving rain the next) the place was pretty busy - about a third full. This meant that the site and the pubs were lively, and added to the success of the trip.
I would highly recommend Great Langdale to anybody who wants to experience a remote and beautiful area. The site gets extremely busy in summer and this means it is best to avoid weekends between May and September. A trip here in winter is ideal.

Top place, lively with pubs close by but maintains a secluded feel. Very highly recommended. Toilet/shower block could have been a bit cleaner but maybe this was just because it was high season and busy. Shop was good and had all the basics. No phone reception but hey! no nagging!

March 2005 This place is superb. The facilities are plenty adequate and in heavy rain the site can turn a bit "lakey" but it's more than compensated by the surroundings. I've been here umpteen times and many an expedition from the site has been delayed from just sitting outside the tent watching the views unfold. The shop on site will sell your basics with Ambleside a short drive or bus ride away. The staff are excellent the infamous "Old Dungeon" is but a crawl away. No mobile phone reception here so pack plenty of provisions, drive in, forget about civilisation and just have an awesome few days - this place is the best pick me up you'll ever find. Trust me!

September 2005 The site was very good, clean showers, NT people very helpful. I arrived in a camper van the guy in reception directed us to a hard standing for vans that turned out to be the car park as the evening progressed it filled up with cars with no room to spare very over crowed but fantastic walks and views.
