July 2005 Stayed at this site for the first time with the kids. Family field ideal for the kids, and thanks for the tip about where to park the car/pitch the tent. Good site, kids had a ball, made lots of new friends. They loved the challenge in the middle of the family field - we liked it for a bit of shade - it was very hot when we visited. Toilet block across the road, was not ideal for the kids - especially when the youngest wandered into the group field in error. But the staff were friently and helpful.
Toilet block at night was a quite a bugfest though - although they have bug shields on the windows - more often than not the door was wedged open which only added to the haze of bugs. Would not put me off though - and great to have pubs within walking distance of an evening. (Just keep an eye on kids on those narrow roads)

August 2005 WOW, just look around you when you get there, it's heaven! Situated on level ground with breathtaking mountains on 3 sides.
Wonderful campsite with good facilities, well stocked shop with good opening times. The staff seemed like they knew about the area like it was their back garden.
3 local pubs! in such a secluded location.
Good play area, kids loved it and there was a seperate family section so we didn't feel like we were annoying the sane people!
Only complaint was that it may feel a little cramped at very busy times whilst there was stacks of room in the group field.

August 2005 Excellent campsite - good value too. Great for families and very dog friendly both on site and the surrounding pubs (3 of them, which all serve food until at least 9pm every night. Washing /shower facilities are very good and adequate even if the site is full - like on our visit. Downside-only 1 - you can't pre-book and we only just squeezed in. Arrive as early as you can and ring ahead along the way to check availability. Will definitely go back - highly recommended - amazing location.

May 2005 We've stayed on this site a few times now and think its brilliant! The location is awe-inspiring and the site is the perfect starting point for a number of excellent walks. The facilities are plentiful and we have always found them clean and tidy. There are lots of showers to go around with piping hot water that is a godsend after a hard days walking. The shop is open from about 8 in the morning to late afternoon and stocks a useful range of camping/walking gear as well as snacks, more substantial food, and drinks. We found the staff very helpful and knowledgable about the surrounding area.
The last time we went there was some bother with a group of young lads who were chatting and shouting after the 'no noise' time of 11pm. I mentioned it to the staff in the morning and pretty soon the lads had been asked to leave the campsite. Needless to say we were very happy. The site is within staggering distance of 3 pubs, and we've found the food and real ale in the Sticklebarn down the road to be excellent each time we have been.

June 2005 This is your model National Trust site. Expensive, but you can see where the money is spent. The toilets and showers work really well and there are plenty of them. The small shop is well stocked with milk, bread and eggs. There is also a section for smaller camping gear you might have forgotten.
Driving past the nearest pub to get to the site, it seems too far away to walk but it is deceptive. Give it a try. It is worth it. The scenery is second to none. A small beck burbles past the family area for the kids, young and old to play in.
Eleven o'clock at night and our part was quiet as you like. Not a sound. Perhaps the subtlest and cleverest idea about the site is the split group camping. There is an area specifically for families. In the centre of the family area is the kiddies playground so it is easy to keep an eye on them from your tent. Needless to say, I am definetely coming here again.

March 2005 Just got back from a nights stay here, great site, lots of facilities and very close to some great walks and pubs.
Not the cheapest campsite in the world but its good value for money as the site was spotless and it was extremely quiet.
I also liked the way the site was split into seperate fields for different types of campers.
We had food in the pub that was down the road on the right when leaving the campsite, the steak pie was lovely and they had decent selection of real ales.

February 2004 This was a very cold visit with the snow blowing around a sunny sky , when we arrived , suffice to say the ground was always going to be hard(ish) I thought, but due to it being quite busy , the mountains draw some hardy campers ! , We pitched at the west end of the campsite up at the large car park , on the grass with plenty of space , but hooee , that ground was stony and tough. After pitching , we relaxed in the spectacular scenery as the sun went down. The ODG is just a stagger away , with fab grub and a good pint , finding the way back by moonlight and other walkers Petzl's was interesting , but other than that great site , good facilities , hot hot water , and a shop that caters well 9/10

July 2004 Love this site - been coming here for years, ever since living up in Blackpool, we still do the trip at least twice a year from the south coast! Peaceful but busy friendly site and perfectly adequate facilities given it's location. At least 3 pubs within staggering distance with Ambleside only a 5 mile wibble away. Walking in the area is infamous and easily reached from the campsite. Weekends get very busy in the summer with more families and young groups making the trip up which is taking away it's exclusive walking/climbing feel.
We love it so much that at New Year time we return (sans tent) and stay in the Old Dungeon Ghyll (warmer rooms!) which is the nearest pub/hotel. No TV and an open fire - great. For a lovely night out try Zafferellis in Ambleside, veggie Italian with cinema seats thrown in - excellent value and a real treat after walking those hills!

September 2004 As already noted this site is in a spectacular position surrounded by the mountains, a fantastic place to wake up ! We were there on 10/11 September & it was not too busy so no probs with getting a shower etc. The guy who booked us in could not have been more helpful (or happy), pulling a pole out of the fence to let us get on with our folding camper & offering to help drag it on.
Must admit the weather was abysmal which led to a lot of standing water which was a bit grim but can't be helped if you want a level pitch. Cheap & cheerful is probably the best description of the site but the fact is that it is always as busy as anywhere goes to show it is doing something right.
Only complaint was the drying room heater was not on-it says it will not be in fine weather- but it was chucking it down!!

August 2004 If you are going as a family, suggest you book in advance as the site was completely full when we arrived. The family field consists of 2 fields separated by a fence, with a childrens play area in the centre. If you pitch on the field to the right, or up against the fence you can park your car right next to your tent.
Shower facilities: Hot, strong showers in cubicles (more private than shower curtains) Washing facilities: Good. Hot water in stainless steel sinks. Toilet facilities: Not always clean, however with the wet weather you should expect mud and the like to come in. Paper was only unavailable for one morning we were there. Shop: Has a very limited stock, when we tried to buy our breakfast essentials they had no bread or sausages, and only one pack of bacon in stock. Only open for one hour in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. I was rarely on site when the shop was open.
Site: If it has been raining a lot there is likely to be a lot of standing water. Our tent had a moat around it after a particularly heavy storm. There are signs up that the brook is liable to flood.
Area: Beautiful scenery, however the farmer moves his sheep into the neighbouring field at night which is horrendously noisy until you get used to it. Great for walking, however driving to and from the campsite is a little scary for the nervous driver (very twisty turny roads and parts where only one car can pass (and HGVs and coaches also use this road - I kid you not!) Tourism: If you have come for a walking holiday this is a good base, however if you are interested in museums and childrens activity places then I would suggest a base more north-west.
