We stayed at Great Langdale campsite during the August bank holiday weekend and I must say for my first time camping this was a very enjoyable experience! We arrived on a Thursday morning to be greeted by a site full sign but after speaking with some helpful staff they assured us there was space on the site and we found a lovely spacious plot at the back of the site. We were happy about this as it was away from the kids area and were able to relax and take in the scenery. As I said the pitch we got was great with plenty of room, the only slight downside was we had to move all our stuff from the car to the tent as you could not park next to your tent but we did manage to get a close parking space so we did not mind. The facilities at the camp site were also very good with excellent toilet, shower and dish washing facilities. These were kept to a high standard throughout what was a very busy weekend. The surrounding views the camp site are beautiful, we were fortunate enough to have clear sky for 4 days and we made the most of it taking in several walks as well as climbing up stykle pike. The atmosphere around the campsite was very friendly and the no noise policy after 11pm was stuck to. The campsite also boosts 3 excellent pubs near by, one being 200 yards from the campsite and 2 more (in my opinion nicer pubs) are a short 5 minute walk up the road. All of these are friendly and served lovely food and drinks. The Saturday night we spent in the stykle pub which had a local singer/ comedian. All in all an excellent stay in the camp site!

This is our favorite family campsite and we have stayed here several times, my only complaint is that too many people know about it and therefore you are not always guaranteed a pitch if you turn up on a Friday and before a bank holiday you need to be there Thursday evening or early Friday. I always get that nervous feeling in my stomach as we get closer as twice we have failed to get a pitch. We always stay on the family field and my daughter loves it, the playground in the center and proximity to the shop gives her the ability to be more independent and gives us a much needed break, she has usually made a friend by the time we have finished pitching the tent. I love the fact that cars have to park away from tents as it means the kids can play and you can see them and there is a more open feel to the site. The staff are very helpful and the shop well stocked, the showers are usually hot and always powerful and the queues not too bad. The location is wonderful you can walk out of the back of the campsite straight onto a stunning walk. There are a number of local pubs, we go to the Dungeon Ghyll as we can take the dog for a much needed meal and drink after a walk. It is very basic and the food won't win awards but it is reasonable. Sometimes on a bank holiday you can hear the music if they have a live band at the Sticklebarn Tavern but that has only happened once. I think the food at the Sticklebarn is better. The local shop is just up the road and has everything you would need in term of food and forgotten camping needs, we love the fruity pork pies and the cafe upstairs is lovely.

Just returned from a midweek stay. Park was full from Thursday. Staff ensured no one else tried to squeeze on. Shop on site was ok, open most of the day and well stocked. Staff were all helpful. 6m pitch rule wasn't strict, we found one tent just in front of us one day (2~3m). The next day another. A minority of campers made most of the noise during our visit but overall the site was very good. The family field was full quickly, adult noise was ok at night. Lots of rabbits running around to entertain the kids. Shower blocks were normally clean, although 2 showers in the womens block were not working correctly and one in the mens during our visit (minor day to day issues on a busy site). The ladies said not all the loo's were flushing correctly. Sure these will have already been fixed by now. Staff were very good and friendly. Just down the road is a lovely cafe (Brambles) and is well worth a visit and has a good stock of food, camping bits etc. We highly rate this site and will be going back very soon. Remember your mossy juice. There were loads out, but seemingly not hungry this week. Location - one of the location sheets we had said it was just before the pub, it was actually a few hundred yards past the pub as you head up the valley from Ambleside. Skelwith bridge apparently has a fab cake shop but we didn't get to try it. Windermere aquarium - try the website for discount offers before you go and places like World of Beatrix potter in W/mere - we picked up a leaflet to get kids in free in peak season. Lovely area. Excellent site.

We chose to stay at this site based on the generally good reviews on this page. While we would return to this site because of it's good points, it's unfortunately not perfect. The great things about this site are it's excellent location, peacefulness ( during the week), remarkably good drainage, reasonable price and superb local pubs ( The Sticklebarn tavern providing excellent food and service ). Unfortunately the site is let down by some unnecessary neglect of the facilities. Another review mentions no hand-dryers in the toilets, but there's a block without any soap dispensers. Another block had a shaving point hanging off the wall. Various toilet and shower cubicles have broken locks and no clothes hooks which are vital in shower cubicles where the whole space gets covered in water in the absence of a curtain. The toilets and site were clean and with a very small amount of money and effort these problems could be solved. The rules of no noise after 11pm and 6m between tents are completely down to your own discretion as the wardens only appear when it's time to collect the money and didn't bat an eyelid at the group of people who pitched 2 tents within 3m of ours and the many others who flouted this rule. The wardens seemed nice enough but probably too easily intimidated.

Just returned from our second trip to this site which was excellent, as was our first stay. Set in a stunning location, well-managed, with two clean shower blocks and a shop which can supply all basic requirements, it's highly recommended. The 11pm curfew on noise was well observed and the site had a peaceful atmosphere at all times. We went midweek and easily found a good pitch but I understand that the site fills up very quickly at weekends so may have a different character during busier periods. We came across a small, extremely thin, black cat begging for food while we were there so if you do go - feed the cat !

Just returned from an awesome long weekend at this campsite. I don't really have any complaints about this site. The only thing that bothered me a little was that there were no hand drying facilities in the toilet blocks and I kept forgetting to take a towel with me. When we got there it was absolutely throwing it down and very windy, which made pitching the tent very 'interesting'. I think we managed to find the most rocky part of the site and had a nightmare trying to get the pegs into the ground. We bought some heavy duty pegs the next day though and a mallet so all was well. I definitely recommend some decent pegs for this site, as all our standard pegs are now very bent. There are three pubs in easy walking distance of the site, one of which had some live music on the Saturday night (a guy with a guitar and a girl with all sorts of different instruments) and they were awesome! If you go to the Old Dungeon Ghyll pub for something to eat, beware the chili! It says on the menu 'hot and spicy' and they are not kidding! Very tasty though. We had a bit of noise trouble on the last two nights, as there was a group who went to the pub and didn't come back until about 11.30 and were then noisy for ages, despite having people in other tents shouting at them. They would say sorry and shut up for all of five minutes and then start again. Not the campsite's fault though, you seem to get people like this everywhere! I would definitely recommend this site and I can't wait to go back again in a few weeks time.

Fabulous scenery, wardens friendly and helpful and will show you to the drier (!) areas. The pitching areas were flat but rocky underneath the surface so put your pegs in at a 80 degree angle and bring a mallet. Toilet blocks have free unlimited hot water and cubicle is large with hangers on the back of the door, idea after a long walk of which there are lots within reach. Two pubs within a few hundred yards to help combat the dehydration. This is my fifth visit to this site, four of which have been out of season and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the peaceful scenic nature of the lakes. It has only the basic facilities but is one of the best tent sites in the UK.

Just returned from a four night stay over Easter at this wonderful site. Given the good forecast and the fact it was Easter weekend we expected the camp to filled to bursting point, but the 'Site Full' sign was up by first thing Friday morning and there was still plenty of space to be had for the kids to run around (we were on the family field) so full points to the staff for not trying to cram as many tents in as possible. All the staff were very friendly and welcoming and the shop was open from 9am to early evening. The showers/toilets were kept very clean and the showers were terrific if you managed to get them before the hot water vanished, which they did at the usual busy times, but this is to be expected on such a large site. Also, being on the family site, there was no noise after the 11pm deadline. The site is in a truly stunning location and is perfect for fell wanderers and camp dwellers alike. The bus service into Ambleside is a particularly welcome bonus. I have no hesitation in recommending this very well run site, it's a shame there isn't more National Trust campsites about. One point to remember is that you can't park next to your tent as you have to use the parking areas provided. For two adults and two under 15s it cost £64 for four nights and there's 3 pubs very close by

I visited this site with my partner in mid August. Cons: Very busy, over filled site. We ended up pitching in the last field at the back, which was quite sloped and bumpy. After rainfall during the night, the field became very boggy in the middle wellies needed!
Pros: The facilities were plentiful and clean (two shower & toilet blocks with washing up area), shop was good with handy ice freezing facility (quite over priced though). Surroundings were great with several good pubs within walking distance. Helpful staff and generally good atmosphere.
No noise after 11 pm rule was respected-we like to sit up & have a couple of beers but we noticed that there were lots of serious walkers there so we didn't want to upset them.
We had a lovely two nights there and would consider going back but not in weekend high season.

This was the first time I have visited this site 'out of season' and I wasn't disappointed. It was lovely and peaceful compared to my previous visits and this really helped you to appreciate the secluded feel of the place. The shop was only open for a few hours in the morning but this wasn't a major problem. I wasn't as impressed with the toilets and showers as I was last time I visited (back in September 2005), and I think that this is probably because I've been 'spoilt' by the facilities at the Forest Holidays site in Beddgelert, Snowdonia and the Glen Nevis Caravan and Camping Park near Fort William. The block wasn't quite as clean as I've come to expect, although this may have been because it was quite wet and muddy. The food at the Sticklebarn was still very impressive and it was easy to find a table because it wasn't quite as busy as it is in the summer months. All in all I would definitely recommend trying this site again in the quieter months of the year if you've only seen it jam-packed on a summer weekend.
