We stayed at the Great Langdale campsite for 8 nights. Brilliant time the campsite is in an ideal location for all the major climbs in the area. Our pitch was lovely looking over towards the Langdale Pikes. The campsite had a relaxed quiet atmosphere even at busy times. The facilities also very good, showers always hot water and good washing up area,Very clean. Also a little shop on site if you have forgotten anything or just need a food top up.
Plenty to do in the area. Blea tarn is a short walk away from a footpath at back of campsite. Pike of Blisco,Crinkle Crags, Langdale pikes, Lingmoor fell are all great walks from the campsite. Ambleside is a short drive/bus journey away. Overall the campsite was lovely and I would love to go back soon. Although the prices a little steep especially for any extras. Its worth it for the location & landscapes and access to brilliant walks.

We turned up on spec at this site for our small 2-man tent as an excellent base for walking the fells. Having visited a number of sites before who don't allow pitching before 12pm, it was a relief to find that we could pitch on arrival at 9:30am giving us the day to hit the fells. At £6 per night, the rates are good too. There is a lot of space on the site, and the facilities are good - despite the large numbers of boots, they seemed to be clean all the time.
The walkers bar ar Dungeon Ghyll is a very short walk away and hits the spot after a long walk.
We planned a wild camp the second night and enquired about whether we could leave the car. This was no problem and were charged £5 for the 24 hours - it costs this for about 3 hours in the National Trust carpark across the road.
Well recommended and will use frequently!

My partner and I stayed here for one night towards the end of May, and had the good fortune to find ourselves with a perfect pitch, doubly so given that the 'site full' sign was up at the entrance; initial heart-sinking was quickly replaced by delight.
I have no experience of camping outside of music festivals (I can't count my one night in a tipi - that was like a 5* hotel!), so found the atmosphere on site very peaceful
After a good 15 miles or so of wandering over Lingmoor Fell and along Langdale Valley it was blissful to unwind by the tent with a stunning view of Harrison Stickle, framed by two great trees; young rabbits ambled by, unruffled by our presence as they munched; a family of Ravens sung in one of the trees; the smells of burning charcoal mixed with other delightful aromas, and as the stars came out, Ursa Minor danced across the night sky. Perfect. The combination of surroundings and general site ambience hooked me totally, so Great Langdale campsite will always hold a firm place in my memory.
Facilities seemed pretty good in my opinion, much better than what I’m used to, although the hot water had died in the nearest shower block, so my partner’s shower was cut short. I can’t and won’t grumble about the cost; fourteen quid for a night away under the stars seems reasonable in this day and age.
We both highly recommend walking over Lingmoor Fell! We cannot have passed more than three other small groups of ramblers, so most of the day was spent surrounded by the awe and wonder of the Central Fells, feeling the energy of the land and the vast beauty of nature all around us, and us alone. Exquisite. Later, as we meandered by Blea Tarn we encountered fell runners competing in a 39 mile run. 39 miles! In that heat! Blimey they get my respect, not least for the way they sprinted down steep banks that we were gingerly zigzagging our way along.
As for the local Inns, disgracefully I’ve only sampled Stickle Barn and The Britannia so far, but if you will excuse my Real Ale ‘Enthusiast’ tendencies (see Viz for full title), I’d have to say the pints of Special Edition we supped in Elterwater at the end of the days walking were spot on.
If by some chance you wake up feeling the need for some rare ballast to shake off the previous hard days exertions, you could do a lot worse than the Apple Pie Cafe in Ambleside – the Veggie Big One had us sorted and ready for another hard day; this time lounging by Coniston Water before the winding drive back through the Dales to Bradford.
We will be back!

We have visited this wonderful site for 30 years, its high charges are tempered by its views and access to the hills and valleys. Most of the other reviews cover the facilities, but just to note this site is now bookable, which is a relief as many people are turned away on Fridays, families especially will be pleased that they can guarantee a pitch.
The shop has a variety of laminated walks to suit all levels, they are a useful guide for newbies. The trees during late May / June can shed sap which is sticky and difficult to remove from tents and cars, worth thinking about when selecting a pitch / parking bay.
The three pubs cover most diets and styles, we love the noisy singalongs in the Old dungeon Gill. The Co-op four miles away sells a great range of organic ready meals and a surprising amount of luxury foods, well worth a pop in,
We have taken our children swimming in the weir on Rossett Gill, a two mile flat walk up the valley.

My partner and I have just returned from what can only be described as a brilliant week at the Great Langdale campsite.
We have camped in the Lake District a few times previously but, with such brilliant walks on offer in the area, we do try to stay in different places each time we go. We have agreed, however, that we will definitely be returning to this site in the future!
We stayed from the May Bank Holiday Monday until the following Friday, managing to secure a great spot as the site was relatively quiet on our arrival. As we had booked in advance, a pitch had been allocated to us but we were given the option to place our tent somewhere else if preferred as it was so quiet.
There are separate fields for family / group bookings which is also a bonus if you are looking for some peace and quiet as an individual or as a couple. No mosquito problems either!
The location of the campsite is truly stunning and there are a number of fantastic walks in the area, many of which we came across by chance. This site appeared to be frequented by experienced walkers and so the rules of the site - no noise after 11pm etc - thankfully were very strictly adhered to.
The staff we came across were friendly and helpful but respected people's privacy. Our days were mainly made up of 4-5hr walks, returning to the campsite for dinner and then trying out some of the local pubs in the evening.
We found the Sticklebarn Tavern was the best of the three by the campsite but Wainwright's Inn in Chapel Stile is also well worth a visit - we walked there one evening across the hills in less than an hour. Be warned that the Old Dungeon Ghyll, although charming, is not the place to go for a quiet drink! Obviously a local haunt, everyone who came into the pub appeared to be well equipped with an amazing variety of musical instruments and a rather raucous din ensued! A pleasant atmosphere but not the best choice if you want to relax at the end of a long day's walking.
The two toilet blocks at the site were basic in comparison to some that I have previously experienced at other campsites - a little disappointing considering the site is quite pricey - however they were exceptionally clean at all times. The ladies toilets in one of the blocks were shut for unknown reasons for half of our stay, however the other block was never busy with no need to queue etc. The showers were the same, with hot water provided at all times, and there is an electric point for hairdryers etc. If required.
My partner and I would seriously recommend this site to anyone who wants a relaxing trip to a beautiful part of the country, particularly if you are looking for fantastic walking opportunities. We are getting a dog soon and will definitely be taking him along on our inevitable next visit!

We visited Great Langdale campsite at Easter for a long weekend.
We were able to book in advance which was a good thing for us because there is nothing worse than trailing round looking for campsites with space.
The pitches we reserved were sectioned off and in a good quiet spot. The ground was moist for the first 4 inches and then hard.
The campsite was quite busy but there was never any queues in the toilets or showers when we visited. The water is very hot and the drying room a bonus.
The site shop is well stocked and good to get some supplies in for cooking as we didn't want to bring in advance not knowing what the weather would be like.
The weather was a bit rainy and the site dealt with it well until the massive rain that lasted a good 12 hours. This rain water logged the site and there was a lot of surface water in places. We packed away in the rain which was not ideal. I think the last lot of rain we had was exceptionally bad.
The walks direct from the area are good, and you can keep your car on site so avoiding parking at other carparks.
The pubs nearby are all good, the old dungeon gill is the closest if you walk from the footpath through the campsite. The new dungoen gill and stickle tarn are about half a mile away and there is a footpath from one to the other through fields. The fields were boggy but the road was just as easy to walk on but a little longer.
We ate in both the dungeon gill pubs new and old and enjoyed our stay especially the gluhvien!
The area was busy with people but had a friendly atmosphere. I would recommend this area and campsite and the crinkle cragg walk too.

I stayed at this campsite for a weekend whilst travelling around the lakes. The site is nestled into a small copse of trees overlooked by the Langdale pikes which are easily accessed from the site. The surrounding scenery is truly beautiful and, although it rained for over half the time I stayed there, it was an extremely enjoyable stay.
Facilities were very good. There are two toilet and shower blocks, so no matter where you are camped it is simple enough to reach the loo. These facilities were kept very clean and in good working order, although I would recommend using the shower at 'off-peak' times. I.E. When no one else is, as the water pressure is reduced considerably in the early morning and evenings.
The general atmosphere on the site was very good; relaxed and friendly. Staff were helpful and polite. The only negatives were that when I was there the ground became quite boggy around paths and on lower areas. I strongly recommend pitching a tent on the higest points available. Also the ground, after a depth of about four inches, is very stoney, so a mallet or strong heel is a must and bent pegs a strong possibility.
All in all a fantastic site which I will return to as soon as possible. I highly recommend taking a walk up to Blea Tarn, which is within a mile of the site and makes for a beautiful evening stroll.

We visited this site with our 4 boys in August. The setting is just lovely and this site is not too big or busy with decent facilities although basic. We spent 2 night there midweek and it was full by the end of our first day. It is a good base if you are going for the walking and we would happily go back there again. It is a first come first served basis so I would recommend getting there earlier rather than too late in the day. Toilets/showers were cleaned twice a day and the showers are not coin operated like another site we visited. The only (very) minor thing I would mention is that the septic tanks on either toilet block can get quite pongy and wonder what that could be like in hot weather. All in all, a lovely wee site and one to try.

Stunning location.
Level pitches on the valley floor and being February we pretty much had the whole field to choose from on Friday afternoon and there was still plenty of room all weekend.
Families and groups (DoE etc not gangs of mates) have their own fields.
Facilities are fine and kept clean and even though one block was out of action there were no queues. Then again the site was not busy.
It snowed heavily on our second night giving a surreal christmas card feel to the whole place, absolutely brilliant fun!
Rabbits darting about and birds that would feed from your hand all add to the atmosphere. Not sure it would be the same in summer.
ODG was our favourite pub with hearty portions and good beer.
Plenty of walks in the area although the weather conditions meant we stuck to the low level and valley walks leaving the 'proper' hikes to the crampons and iceaxe brigade.
No cars on the field gives a nice feel and avoids the wheel spinning antics seen on other sites. The cars parks are close enough by.
The best bit though is NO CARAVANS!

I stayed for 3 nights from Friday August 7th, till Monday 10th.
The site location is situated right by the mountains, and it is fantastic if you're into walking and climbing.
It is a fairly big site, with a group site, which is very useful when you're with a small group.
The group field is a little boggy in places, made worse by sunday night/monday mornings heavy continuous rain.
The shop is very good, and sells just about everything.
I forgot to bring some plates and bowls, and saucepan, and I managed to get all those from the shop.
It's best to phone and book the site, as it gets full very quick this time of year.
The staff were very friendly, and campers stuck to the rules, and stopped the noise after 11pm, although it is noisy during the afternoon, with kids shouting and screaming.
There was a terrible smell outside near the toilets, which made me feel sick, and it was a very strong sewage smell.
The showers were the best I have ever used, at any camp site, and it's so powerful, that it almost takes your skin off, and you can control the heat of it as well, which is good.
The price of camping was quite high,at £10.50 per night, and you can't park your car on the field, so you have to walk back and forth to the car to load/unload.
There are extra prices on top. Including £1.50 per night for a dog, and if you have a medium tent, such as 3 man, then there is an extra £4 on top, which is why I only rate the value for money at 4 out of 10, and if you want a gazebo put up, there is also an extra £5 to add.
All in all, I was impressed with the site, and I would like to go again, but I would look at other options, as I stated above, I felt it was a bit pricey, and too many added prices.
