This is an absolutely stunning campsite.
Having read all the reviews I was expecting a fantastic camping experience and as a group we were definitely not disappointed.
The campsite is well organised, reasonably priced and located in a stunning and handy location in Langdale Valley.
The toilets, showers and washing area were clean and plentiful. The campshop is well stocked and sells fantastic bacon and eggs. Was eagerly waiting each morning for it to open (815am) to get the stove going and tuck in.
The location is ideal
- three pubs within a five minute walk: Old Dungeon Ghyll, New Dungeon Ghyll and The Stickle Barn tavern
- some stunning walks
- 20 minutes to civilisation (Ambleside)
The only down side - and it so small that I hesitate to mention it - is the midges! But after a few pints of snecklifter at the ODG they become less irritating!

My first time camping and I was not looking forward to it!
We arrived at the Great Langdale campsite and pitched our tent fairly near the bridge on the one of the main fields where a rabbit was bounding about! It rained all day but it did not make the scenery any less spectacular.
The car was left on the main driveway through the site away from the tent and we had to walk to the car to obtain the belongings that were to go inside our tent. This reduced the grass from getting too muddy.
We left the campsite to go for a walk and found so many places to walk and eat surrounding the site without having to drive anywhere. We even went blackberry picking!
The toilets and showers are clean and free and the water is hot. The floor may get a little muddy but can't be helped if it's raining. I was happy as it also had an electrical point for me to dry my hair; somebody else was using the point to charge their mobile phone up (although you will not get a signal in the Langdales!)!
We bought sausages from the little shop which had many essential items you may have forgotten to bring.
There is a strict note about noise levels after 11pm and should this not be adhered to, you will be asked to leave as were a young group of lads.
There are separate fields for large groups and families and a play area for children.
We stayed for 3 nights and I would have been happy to stay an extra night as this campsite has converted me into a regular camper! It is first come, first served and on Friday night people were being turned away as the site was full but this does not cause any surprise due to beautiful views, relaxed atmosphere and good amenities that this site has. I can't wait to go again.

Great site to use for base camp to go mountain walking on the Langdale Range. As has been said before the Shop is well stocked for the basic necessities and camping gear. Toilet and shower is very good and clean with plenty of hot water. My only advice is try not to pitch near the stream if possible, because if it rain there is a chance the stream will break its bank and flood nearby area.

We went to Great Langdale Campsite last week as a large church group. Despite the awful weather we had an amazing time and would definitely recommend it to everybody. The streams that run through the campsite provided endless hours of fun for the kids (they didn't even mind the rain). The site is surrounded by lovely views and plenty of walks for everyone. Plenty of toilets, sinks, shower cubicles which are huge (the biggest we've seen in all campsites we've been before). Plenty of washing up sinks as well. Hot water and electrical sockets for hair dryers and hair straighteners are free. The shop provides all the daily essentials and some emergency needs (even air beds and water proof outfits). There is a washing machine (takes £2 token) and dryer (£1 token) although with the size of the campsite, they could probably do with an additional washer and dryer or probably another washer / dryer room or block so that you wouldn't have to wait too long to wash or dry. The toilets, showers and dishwashing room are cleaned regularly. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and always at hand to answer any queries and assistance. The Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and 2 other pubs are just a short walk away and serve delicious food. This is my favourite campsite so far.

We arrived on a Thursday so got a great pitch by the stream. On the plus side could keep an eye on the kids (aged 23 months and 3 but on the minus got bitten lots and the bridge was a congregating place for a lot of other children from the site so was noisy later on when trying to settle ours to bed!) Adventure playground in the middle of field surrounded by trees was ideal and popular.
Site full sign up about 4 o'clock on the Friday so best to ring ahead or get there early (although it was down again Saturday morning). Site not cramped, even though it was busy and showers were hot, free, clean and no queues.
Shop sells lots of essentials and camping equipment.
Lovely walks straight from the site and 3 decent pubs serving food nearby.
We loved coming to this site as a couple and walking in the mountains and returning after 3 years our two little ones loved it just as much. Lovely walk up the back of the site which our 3 year old managed to Blea Tarn and a lovely place to picnic. Will definitely be returning soon.

Stayed at the Great Langdale campsite for 2 nights and I was very impressed - very picturesque setting and great location if you're into fell walking. The site was very level and I would say you would struggle to get a bad pitch.
The site was quite busy, considering the bad weather, however there were signs asking you to leave a gap of 6 metres between tents which meant you weren't crammed in.
You parked your car away from the tents which meant a few trips back forward carrying your stuff but it was worth it as it meant more space and the grass didn't get chewed up when it was wet.
Toilet facilities were kept clean and showers were hot and free. There was also a small shop on site which sold milk, sausages, bacon etc, toiletries and camping bits and pieces. You could also freeze your freeze packs for 25p each.
The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel is a couple of minutes walk out of the bottom of the site, which was full when we went to eat there on the saturday night. The New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and Stickle Tarn pub are about 10 minutes walk further up the road from the site. Ate in the Stickle Tarn one afternoon. The food was usual pub food, Cumberland Sausage & Scampi etc for around £8 per meal. The pub had a nice wood burning stove to keep you warm and the staff were friendly.
Overall a very good campsite and will definitely go back - hopefully the weather will be better next time!

Excellent site. Facilities were very clean and tidy. Shame about the weather. I was supposed to stay for 4 nights but woke up on the 3rd morning to find my tent in a lake which had formed overnight so I had to pack up and go home. Has'nt put me off. I'll be back again.

Well.It rained, and rained, and rained some more.Luckily there's a pub within walking distance, and the site shop stocks everything from free range eggs to lilo bungs.
Great site in beautiful setting so we weren't too bothered by the horrendous weather. Was a bit confused by the 'booking by head count' rather than by number of units. I turned up with my 6 man tent from Oxford with 2 family members due to arrive later in the day from Yorkshire to share my tent, and was told that technically this wasn't allowed. Unless we all arrived at the same time, they couldn't be guaranteed access to the site.Bit odd as we were all in the same tent!Luckily the site wasn't full by the time they arrived at 8pm on the Fri(due to forecast), so they were allowed in but we were given a small lecture about it!You have been warned. Turn up as early as possible on Friday in the high season to be sure of a pitch, even with the poor weather the site was busy. They do have a group field you can book if there are a few of you which looked nice. There is also a separate family field so this does make it quieter than most sites in the morning, although the walkers staying on site can be early risers (6am!). Toilets and showers very good with v hot water.Stream and river run through the site so take insect repellent.Pub:Stickle Barn tavern 5-10 min walk away. Dogs allowed. The band on the Saturday night were awful!(sounds like Muskateers - The .And beers?)Like a Butlins cabaret act - bad/offensive jokes in-between poorly executed covers. Chips and children everywhere on Saturday eve, so if you fancy something a little more authentic go elsewhere eg The Hole in t'Wall in Bowness.Site charged £5 per adult per night, dog £1.50 per night + charge for each car. The best pitches are in the back field. You can't park alongside your tent, so be aware you will need to carry everything to your pitch. £18 taxi fare to Ambleside. The setting makes this site, it's gorgeous. Would go back.

Our first family camping trip and wow what a site. The most fabulous location. Breathtaking views. Arrived Thurs pm having taken kids out of school for one day. Family camping area large level and charming - stream at side play area in middle. Us and two other tents. By 8pm Fri the site full sign was up! Midges by the millions. High grade repellent a must. Facilities plentiful and clean. Weather monsoon like but figured if that dosen't put us off nothing will. New waterproof tent on order. Staff helpful, site price good. Fear we may have started too high! Certainly bitten by the bug(s).

This site will have to go down as one of my favourites. Being a NT site I expected it to be of a reasonable standard. The grounds are excellent and facilities certainly suitable for the size of place. The site was full when we were there but it did not feel too overcrowded in the family field. Some inconsiderate siting caused others to miss out a bit, but luckily we got a reasonable distance between the next couple of units. There is a no noise rule which seemed to be adhered to after a little encouragement, perhaps 11pm was a little late for the younger families and there was no warden that I saw to make sure everyone was adhering to it. None the less some great weather made this a really good overnighter for us and the surrounding area is stunning, just a short walk from the site. The facilities are a little dated and suffer from cobwebs in the ceilings (my pet hate) the floors get looked after but a little extra work in this area would make it so much more appealing. The shop is very well stocked and surprisingly most items are reasonably well priced. Although you could get stung had you forgotten your tomato sauce or sugar! Ice creams and milk are normal prices and some bacon and sausages looked delicious for a few quid. There are satellite toilet blocks and the busier non-kids side does suffer from parking mayhem, I would like to see parking done in small bays running off the main road which could be done quite tastefully in a park of this type. Whilst free for all pitching is a plus in some places, this narrow gladed site may benefit from just a little more organisation which again could easliy be sorted with the benefit coming back to the customer. On the family side the parking was not too much of an issue, you are given the freedom to make it your own place and the early bird definitely gets the best place. The plus outweighs the minus for me at this site and will be making it a destination for the school hols without doubt.
