I have visited this site many times over the years and have always pre booked a pitch at the side of the family field as the pitches are flat and there is plenty of room between tents, however when booking this time I was told that they no longer used the usual pitches in order to save the grass from wearing out in the same spots but was told a spot would be saved for me in that area

On arrival I was told the area was full and I would have to search the site for a space, after 30 mins of walking round the site I found a spot and pitched. I went to look at the area I had booked and saw that more tents than usual were on the same piece of grass, so it seems to me that rather than saving the grass the idea of getting rid of pitch numbers is to get more tents in and make more money. A shame as its a lovely site but is now a massive free for all whether you pre book or not

National Trust run campsite in an ideal location for walks in the fells. 5 mins to Old Dungeon Ghyll pub which serves great food and ale.

Small shop on site. Level pitches, few hard standing campervan pitches adjacent to the reception area which did feel a bit like a car park.

Big field for tent pitches. Showers and toilets clean.

Great site with very good facilities. Friendly staff with good local knowledge. 3 pubs within easy walking distance that serve food. Magnificent views.

A good choice of accommodation, tent, caravan, yurts, huts, mobile home.

Great campsite though it gets a little like a car park at peak times. Love the informality of everything.

Now got more electric hook ups so becoming more popular at weekends so plan ahead. Only gripe really is the £5 booking on line fee.

Absolutely loved waking up to see mountains. Friendly staff in the little shop on site who charged out phones.

Lovely pub nearby. Fabulous walks and bike rides.

Have camped here a few times and a fabulous site with friendly helpful staff. Great local pubs serving tasty food. Perfect for climbing Scaffel pike etc. What more can you ask for.

Oh and there's a drying room, to dry boots and clothes. Just in case the weather isn't on your side. Back there in August.

Friendly welcome from National Trust staff and pointed out where to pitch. Details had been left on the door with a map provided too but we had personal service having arrived after 3pm when shop was open. We thought that was when you had to arrive as it is not very clear from the website - but other people seemed to arrive at all times.

Would have ben useful to know where water points were on arrival as it was a long way to carry it to our campervan once we had pitched - only two water points at shower blocks. Fabulous views all around and we did walks in all directions without having to drive anywhere. Imagine it would be very busy in season with over 200 pitches but lovely and quiet in March - only a few campervan pitches but they seemed to be flexible at this time of year for those who didn't want hook up.

There were even some brave tent campers. Website says you can only book 24 hours in advance which seems silly considering you have to pay the full amount then too - surely most people having paid will turn up.

Several pubs in walking distance and all dog friendly - completely different feel to them so depends what you like. In fact we each preferred the food in different ones! Large toilet and shower blocks which were clean and warm - could do with a floor mop/squeegee to leave it dry for those following you. I'm sure we will be back but not in high season !

Great Langdale means Very Long Valley - this is a clue to the approach road that is officially graded B but is almost single track with passing spaces. There is a good reason why the site does not allow caravans and large motorhomes will find access quite exciting too.

That said, the site's setting at the end of the valley is stunning with the fells rising steeply on every side. Plenty of trees for shelter but also plenty of midges on our visit. This probably wasn't helped by the hot, humid weather and rather long grass.

The staff gave us a friendly welcome. Reception has a shop selling basic food and camping gear. There is a small Co-op back up the valley otherwise shopping is in Ambleside.

It is a large site but well broken up into sections with two large toilet blocks. These are functional rather than decorative but kept clean and the water was always hot. Drying rooms available. No mobile reception or wi-fi. Bring some change for payphones!

There are two pubs both serving meals within walking distance but we didn't try either so can't comment. Other folk were saying nice but expensive.

The walking, climbing and biking is all excellent straight from the site. Otherwise there is very little to do. Wray Castle (Nat Trust) is a car drive away and primary school child friendly with lots of activities.

Beautiful location. Stunning mountains all around. Plenty of showers which were always available with hot water when we wanted them. Well stocked shop.

The children were especially fond of the morning croissants, bacon baguettes and freshly baked bread which were available. Good walks in the area.

No fancy facilities but some good honest pubs in nearby locality (if a bit pricey!)

Myself, husband and two boys aged 13 and 9 visited Great Langdale in July 15, staying for 6 nights in a wooden pod.

The site itself is up a long, narrow windy road but worth it when you get there, and the area around the site is stunning. It was busy while we were there, but you hardly notice, due to the way the site is setup and lots of trees. There are no caravans, just tents and the site is mainly occupied by serious walkers and hikers. There is no entertainment at this site, but we didn't want that, and at night, it was very quiet.

The facilities are all excellent, maybe slightly in need of a lick of paint, but that wasn't an issue, and we never had to queue for a shower and there was always hot water. There is also a washing machine and a handy drying room.

The pod itself was good to stay in, it was dry and had a heater and lights. The only (very slight) downside was it's size. We had booked a family pod (2 adults and 3 children), but it slept four of us and our stuff, not sure where a fifth person would have slept. During the day, we piled the beds up at the far end of the pod. On other sites, pods can be fitted with beds etc, but the pods here have nothing inside them, so you need to take everything you would normally take camping, except the tent. We knew this, and had all we needed.

We ate at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, and twice at the Sticklebarn Inn. The Sticklebarn did fresh pizza cooked in an outside oven, which went down well with the boys. We didn't use the on site shop, but it seemed well stocked. They did mean bacon baguettes every morning too. Ambleside is handy for shopping.

We organised Ghyll Scrambling up Stickle Ghyll and Canoeing on Windermere, via the campsite, and these activities were great. The same instructor, Justin, lead both activities, and he was very safety conscious and a thoroughly nice guy.

There is lots to do in the area, and at the lakes. We visited Ullswater and went on a boat trip and Aira Force waterfall, Windermere, and Coniston. Bowness on Windermere was too busy with hoards of bus tours milling around, but we liked Ambleside, very quaint.

All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this site, and would love to go back again.
