First time using this site and was very impressed. There was four of us, and we stayed over a weekend.
THE CAMPSITE: Mostly caravans, though there is a semi-sheltered field for tent campers. Friendly atmosphere - the kids made new friends on the first night.
STAFF: The staff were so friendly and helpful, even offering to carry one of our rucksacks up a steepish hill to our camping spot.
FACILITIES: The toilets, showers and washing up rooms were clean & well maintained. The reception is also the shop, though it only sells the very basics. It opens a couple of hours a day (morning and teatime).
THE AREA: Great location, especially if you don't drive. Site is near the main train station (no trains run on a Sunday). Lots of nice seaside villages and towns on the mainline to explore. Nearest supermarket is Tescos in Whitehaven 20 minutes train journey. Eskdale is about 9 miles away, and can be reached by the Ratty (mini steam train). Muncaster Castle is nearby too. Ravenglass itself has an estuary type beach to explore. There are a couple of pubs in the village - we ate some lovely meals at the Ratty Arms.
BEST BITS: Friendly campsite, good location to explore the Lakes even if you don't drive.
WORST BITS: no local little shops to top up essential supplies if you don't drive.
RECOMMEND TO OTHERS? Yes! Definitely recommended!

I was glad to get a pitch here as it was a summer holiday Friday night and I'd had to ring round a bit to get somewhere to stay. The bloke in charge was helpful and patient. I didn't like to look of the tent site at the top, it was a long way to the facilities, the grass was churned up and there was a noisy family (I usually don't mind kids around, so maybe I was just tired & grumpy). However the staff didn't mind me pitching among the trees, so that was fine.
The facilities were up to the usual standard of Camping and Caravanning club sites, and as a non-member I was charged a fee which was more than I usually pay but I feel it was still reasonable. After staying at smaller tent-only sites I missed the chatting with other campers.
It was a useful stop-over but if I went up there again I've found a different site I'd like to try.

We stayed here in July. Beautiful campsite, toilet facilities were very clean and showers were fantastic. Lovely area, very quiet village.
Only concern was the lack of play area for children and found that some campers were not tolerant of children at all. Our child was told off for by another camper within an hour of arriving for riding his scooter around the toilet area.
Would not recommend coming to this site if you have children as it more suited for older campers without children.

Had a wonderful time at this site. We were welcomed warmly and offered help to pitch. The pitches are allocated and we favoured ours, had a good view. It is true, some are on steep slopes and less attractive but we personally adapt easily, so this will not put us off.
I read reviews on this site prior to going and found them helpful. We did not have any problems at all with the facilities ie. only 2 showers. It was very clean, new and bright. The site shop is good but it is best to arrive well stocked up with food. The site location is perfect and we really enjoyed the many attractions close by.
In particular the little Ratty railway. If you like village pubs, as we do with real ales, the train takes you to many. Ask the locals and the site warden and it is all so very easy and nice to leave the car behind.
We found the Holly House Hotel was brilliant,in Ravenglass, welcoming and great ale.
The journey was a little daunting, after leaving the M6 at Junction 36, and we are used to towing. Going home was easier somehow knowing what to expect. We will return maybe next year, but the journey I think will stop this site being one we go to regularly, which is a shame because it is so lovely.
It took us about 2 hours and 20mins but 1 hour 20 was off the motorway on the very very winding road. Easy to find, signposts good.

Lovely site in a beautiful location. The facilities were fine and a nice, well stocked shop with local produce. We took a rail trip to Carlisle which was very nice even though the weather was awful.
The village is very small and the shop was poor. I would recommend the site for its location to the Lake District. The small steam rail trip was expensive.

Fabulous site! The site is in a beautiful setting and top field, where the tents are mainly pitched, is in an excellent spot for appreciating how beautiful Cumbria is. Great little helpful options of picnic benches and rotary washing lines really impressive.
Toilet blocks spotless. And barely a rule in sight! Everyone on site appeared to know about respect for owners and other guests so no rules at every corner required. Wonderful breath of fresh air. Ravenglass itself is stunning.
Would highly recommend the Holly House Inn and the tea rooms next door. Would highly recommend Avoiding Ratty Arms - poor service (felt like we were inconveniencing staff by wanting to spend our money there) and poor quality food. Top marks to campsite, will definitely return.

This campsite is loverly when you arrive the staff will provide you with loverly customer service.
The shop its well stocked with local meats, dairy, and beer.
And the things you always forget.
The toilets are second to none, showers are amazing powerful and hot. With a bench round the side so your clothes don't get wet.
The site is on a hill, we where at the top so was a little walk to the loo in the middle of the night.
Is right next door to Muncaster castle which is a must to visit.
There is also the train station and the ratty pub which does nice food.
Will definitely be back.

This is a nice area but the site has so many trees it is very dark and the sun does not get through on many pitches. We were met by another camper saying 'welcome to the twilight zone' I would not go there again, but I can't fault the owners they were very friendly. Walking in the area is very Picturesque

We were delighted to discover this site was open over Christmas and New Year for the first time this year and made our escape here on Boxing Day, returning reluctantly today because of work commitments. Much as we enjoyed Christmas with our family, we equally enjoyed the peace and quiet of this site and area, where you can do as much or as little as you want - we went for the 'doing little' option, apart from a few local walks, but did have an enjoyable day out in Whitehaven by main line train (the station is about 3 mins walk from the campsite). For food and drink supplies, incidentally, there is an excellent shop with cafe above at Gosforth, about 5 miles from Ravenglass, and a Mace shop at the petrol station at Holmrook, about 3 miles away, so you do not have to go all the way to Whitehaven for food unless you need a supermarket fix!
Despite the freezing temperatures (leading to stunning views over the estuary and the Lakeland hills) we stayed warm and cosy, and the hot showers on site are among the best we have encountered! We enjoyed the festive decorations of many of the outfits (especially Santa on a pole) and are determined to do better next year - our 6' tall tree in the front window didn't quite measure up! Thanks to those of you who made the effort.
This is one of our favourite sites, well worth the effort of getting here, and we will definitely be back.

Spent a weekend on this site in October. The weather was a bit blustery and rainy but we were nice and warm inside the tent. The warden put us at the top were there is a grassy `Knoll` which seemed to drain well however it did get a bit muddy. You can even get EHU if you like. The ratty arms is a good local pub within a couple of hundred yards away so to is the railway and a narrow gauge rail going all the way into Eskdale. The railway cafe does a decent fry up as well and all within a stones throw from the sea. The only gripes I have with the campsite was the one way system isn't sign posted and a post van ended up going the wrong way ! And that the paths are not well lit going to the toilet block and I ended up wondering onto other peoples pitches at night ( or was it because I was a little drunk Hick!).
