Just spent a week at Ravenglass and its everything everyone says it is. It seems to be run very well and everything is clean and well kept. The hardstandings are awning friendly, ie you can get your pegs in, unlike some club sites Ive visited. A few people have said in earlier reviews that the road from the M6 isn't too good, well its not great, but living in mid Wales I can say they are no worse than ours.
If you like eating, and most of us do, you will need to travel to Whitehaven to stock up for your stay, because shops are pretty scarce in those parts, tesco is by the harbour, they also sell the cheapest diesel / petrol in the area.
We didn't travel as far as Windermere, but instead stayed local-ish. Wastwater and Eskdale Head are very beautiful, the lake in particular is stunning. A trip to Ravenglass would not be complete without a trip on the steam engine up into the mountains, and when back a pint and a nice meal in the Ratty Arms finishes off the day a treat. Well worth the drive, if you go you WILL enjoy it.

It seems I only write positive things about the camping and caravan club sites, and a visit this week to Ravenglass wont be changing things.
The site and its owners were really top drawer, the site owner explained to us with all the bad weather in the week our stay had been in danger of being cancelled, but once we got to our pitch at the top of the site the standing was pretty firm.
We erected our tent and it was really reassuring that the owner came along to check we were happy with the ground.
The site is really close to some good walks and amenities with the dog walk just outside the camp. If you carry on up the path you reach the Roman Baths and if you venture further on you will reach Munchester Castle.
The site shop is well stocked and is even licensed, you can also buy maps with walks ranging from 2 miles to 5 miles but be sure to check the tide times, one of the walks take you on the tidal flats, and we had to do it backwards because the tide was in.
The village of Ravenglass is 5 minutes walk away and there are three pubs were you can eat and drink, we tried the Ratty Arms and wasn't disappointed with the food and hospitality.
All in all a great weekend good clean friendly site with plenty going on in walking distance, will return again next year because a weekend wasn't enough to explore such a scenic place with beautiful surroundings

The site is in a quite village, you can bike to muncastle, well worth a visit,as well as ravenglass railway, a nice trip out, the site itself is really nice and friendly, the tents are at the top of the site, there are some trees as well as an open area, it was windy, but the weather was terrible, the toilets and showers are fantastic, really clean and spacious, the family shower was great the even had a baby bath, the there is a hairdryer free to use in the ladies.
Im not sure what you do if the shop is shut when you arrive, it was open when we got there, it sells a few supplies, but stock up first as the nearest shop is miles away, the shop had plenty for you to make your tea/breakfast.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this site or use it again, during the evening there were kids playing on bikes, and barbecues on the go, a great site.
There is a pub two minuets walk, which did great food, and on the way is a small public park and a feild to play football on, good to know if you have kids with you.
There were hook ups for tents, as well as water, the site had a central toilet block, which was a two minuet walk from the tents, it is up a hill to the tents but it will keep you fit.
Although we didn't have bikes, there is a cycle path, which from what I understand is ok for the kids to go along, there is a beach but we didn't see it, ran out of time. We went mainly to visit muncaster castle, as I mentioned well worth a day out, lots for the kids to do and space for them to run around.

Stayed here end of august and the weather was mixed, we had lots of rain in the night but the site didn’t suffer from it. The staff on site was very friendly and the site shop was well stocked. The site was full but it never seemed like there were a lot of people about. We were parked on a plot next to the road and for a very small village the noise from the traffic started early and it is very noticeable, the plot was just large enough for our folding camper and awning it would have been better if the tree wasn’t there. Other plots were good sizes and there were some big units on them. The toilets are always spotless but for the first time ever I had to queue for a shower because there are only 2 of them, it needs more. The ratty arms is a great pub and it has a large selection of food and beer, and is dog friendly. Great location for getting out in to the hills a trip on the small train is great fun. If you want to visit the other side of the lakes go by hard not pass my wife loved it and at the end she nearly threw up. The village is small and wonderful.

Ravenglass is a beautiful site. There are a couple of pubs approx 15 mins walk from the site.
The site is very secluded and extremely quiet (even when full).
It is the ideal place to escape and relax.
There are a number of walks from the site and there are printed maps available to buy from the shop.
They offer a small car for hire which is ideal for camper van owners.
Altogether a very well run site and we would definitely consider going their again.

A lovely site on the Western Edge of the Lake District, which is away from the touristy Lakes, but close to the Ravenglass train station for the Small Steam train or Main line. Ravenglass is a small village so don't expect the earth! We enjoyed walking down there and mussel picking!
The owners are fantastic and work extremely hard. Thank you to Sandra (and Craig of course!) and Andy who all made us feel welcome. They will gladly help you into your pitch as it is a bit tight around the trees - I loved the fact that the site was on different levels.
The on site shop is well stocked and you can even pay for wireless internet if you wish! The power showers are lovely and hot, but queues do develop at certain times. There is a family shower as well, which was very good.
We had a very enjoyable week at Ravenglass. Make sure that you take the Ratty steam train to Dalegarth, but it is a bit expensive for a family of four £27.50. A day out in Whitehaven on the train is cheaper = £14.10 for a family of four.
All in all a very relaxing week, but don't expect to be near the major shops or supermarkets!

We chose Ravenglass because of the reviews, plus the fact that it is in the Lake District yet by the sea - truly the best of both worlds. In fact, the site almost has its own 'micro-climate' because clouds tend to roll in off the sea, fly straight over the flat fields and then gather over the mountains - so we had fantastic weather for most of the week.
It is an idea location although it is a little out of the way - took us approximately 2 hours from leaving the M6 (from the south), but it is worth it for the peace and quiet.
Ravenglass itself is a small coastal village, with a Post Office, tearooms, railway station (plus La'l Ratty of course) 2 pubs, a restaurant and a gift shop. And that's it. The nearest supermarket is 20 miles at Whitehaven but don't panic, there are many smaller Mace and Londis types in the smaller towns.
The village is on an estuary where 3 rivers meet and when the tide is low there is lovely sand and shingle, and you can walk along the coast a little way too. The Muncaster Estate is also walking distance, past the Roman Bath House and on through footpaths, though in truth it's much quicker walking along the main road! It is a very pretty walk and the Estate is well worth a visit and the £8 entrance fee.
The site is in a peaceful location in what used to be part of the Estate grounds, our pitch had views over the fields towards the estate, often the fields had sheep in and a couple of very friendly pheasants. It was peaceful and dark at night, and we all slept like logs!
Washing areas seemed very well kept and efficient though we rarely used them. The shop is handy for basics including bread and meat and some veg. Wardens were friendly and helpful.
Pitches are hardstanding, and we were lucky to be on the edge of the site overlooking fields - those in the centre are all looking at each other, and those on the other side are by the (fairly quiet) road. The camping field is at the top but beware if you are towing a trailer tent because the road is steep and gravelled and unless you take it at a good speed you won't get up it! That's why motorhomes and caravans don't go up that bit!
I thought the camping field was the furthest from all the facilities and seemed a little way to walk to do your washing up.
Nearest takeaways we found were in Seascale, there is a chippy and a Chinese (very good) as well as a Mace. Good pubs around the Santon Bridge area. Egremont has a wider selection and we tried a very good Indian there though there were plenty of other choices.
I would go back to this site tomorrow, it is stunningly beautiful and peaceful, Ravenglass really is another world away from the hustle and bustle. Be prepared to drive a long way to get anywhere, but if you don't mind that or you're looking for a get away from it all site, it's perfect!

A very nice quiet site in a very nice location and only a few minutes walk from the lovely and peaceful village of Ravenglass, and also within walking distance of Muncaster Castle which has plenty to offer for a good day out for all the family.
The site managers are very helpful and friendly and they are a credit to the club in the way they run and maintain the site. The toilet block was always clean with plenty of hot water at all times. Some of the pitches are on top of a steep incline and can be a bit awkward if you have walking difficulties as unlike the Caravan Club you do not chose your pitch but are allocated one. This of course is nothing to do with the staff as it is club policy and at times can have it's benefits, it can also cause problems driving up the hill because the surface is of loose granite chippings and can cause wheel spin when negotiating the slope. I think the club should cover this short but steep slope with ashphalt if only as a safety measure, we really enjoyed our stay on this site and hope to return there at a future date.

Just returned from Ravenglass after a week of glorious weather.
Site is spotless all facilities are spotless @ all times day & night. It is geared more to caravans & motorhomes so that when the bottom half of the site is full (as when we stayed) it looks a bit like a small housing estate. Nevertheless the trees on the site and the open fields around make up for that. The view from our tent was stunning.
The site staff were all very friendly as were most of those staying.
The western & northern lakes are very, very beautiful - quieter and more accessible than the 'biggies' in the south.
Ravenglass itself is quaint and lovely, we had a very good meal in the very swish Pennington Hotel in the village a 5 minute walk from the site.
It was almost 20 years since we last visited this part of the Lake District - it was a delightful re acquaintance made all the better by such a good site.

Just back from Ravenglass. A beautiful well kept site with lovely sized pitches. Surrounded by trees and fields, this site is a real gem and there is an abundance of wildlife, pheasants, rabbits and much more. On the quieter side of the Lake District but with plenty to offer. A lot of people head for the seafront to wait for the beautiful sunsets and they sit at the front of the small pub having a drink or on the grass area opposite. The Ratty Arms is close at hand and is good for a meal and is dog friendly. Our husky was brought out bowls of water to drink, as we were lucky enough to have stayed in really hot weather. The train station is right beside the site and the steam train is a nice novelty for adults and children, dog friendly again. Another place we found to eat was in Drigg, The Victoria Hotel. Steaks recommended. The starters are the size of a main course!Staff very friendly and helpful. For a main shop, as there are not a great selection of shops about, it would be Whitehaven. Morrisons is on the left on the way in. Waswater lake is almost on the doorstep. Simply beautiful. Dont attempt to take a caravan there the road is not suitable. It is a walkers paradise. The scenery is stunning and its voted the most tranquil place in the uk. I can see why.In my opinion nicer even than most of the other lakes. We made up picnics and took the dog who loved the cold water and the freedom to run.Not at all crowded, and no one to be seen, other than the occasional walkers and some campers.
Back to the campsite.
Only one complaint about the site and that was the lack of facilities for washing clothes. There is only one domestic washing machine and dryer and it took £7.00 in total for a medium wash and dry.Other than that, the showers and toilets are spotless. Also tv reception is very poor so its recommended to get the 10 channel hook up which is only £1 per day and well worth it.
Overall a well recommended site.
