Just got back from a really sunny weekend at Ravenglass. We joined the Camping And Caravan club in Feb and decided to to try Ravenglass campsite out and we were not disappointed.

When we arrived about 2:30pm the shop was closed. But there was a phone to one side which put us into contact with the owners who are very helpful and welcoming. We were shown our pitch which was very flat, and the grass was in excellent condition. There is ever such a slight hill up to the tenting area but easy to walk.

The toilets were immaculate always claen tidy and fully stocked with loo roll and hand towels. Free hair dryer, and the showers, oh my goodness have to be the best showers I have ever used on a

Campsite and proberbly most hotels. They are free, stay on until you turn them off and are constantly hot.

The washing up facilities are also excellent and you can tell how much care the owners have for this site. Nothing is too much trouble the shop has most things, we forgot sugar and fairy liquid the shop had plenty. It is only open 8:30 - 10am and then 16:00 - 18:00 daily and closed sunday afternoon. Out of hours you can just pick up the phone in the information kiosk or you will see the owners around the site just ask them for anything and they will get it for you. Newspapers have to be ordered at reception with a 10p delivery charge.

Gas is also available on site.

We ate at the Ratty arms which is approx 2 min walk from the site we got there about 7pm and had to wait for a table only about half an hour but if your planning on eating out here best to book in advance to ensure getting a table when you want one.

Looking forwards to our next camping trip to Ravenglass

After arriving from a long train journey from Manchester, we (me and my girlfriend) were warmly greeted by Sam (Sam and Andy, the campsite owners) and was very well taken care of. We were even told that if our clothes become wet in the night, that we could ring them on the reception phone and they would pay to dry them! Also after a long day of walking we returned to bread, milk, sausages and my girlfriend's personal favourite, Kendal mint cake compliments of the owners!

The toilet blocks were immaculate. They even had fresh flowers in therr, which became a running joke between us. Plus, this is the only campsite I've ever been to that contains power showers, that were free and ran warm all the time. The toilets themselves were also very clean and supplied well with toilet roll (something I seem to have bad-luck with).

The shop -which has been stated to only contains essentials- is fully kitted out with not only essentials, but anything needed for campers last minute. Maps, gaitors, pocket rockets, vaseline, pain-killers you name it. Also it contains a rather large range of foods from home-made ice-cream from Egremont to fresh cuts of meats from the local butchers. We were also told that if we needed anything that they couldn't offer, to give them a nights notice and they will try to get it from the milkman who usually comes through. The prices in the shop were very fair and I personally didn't find them extortionate in any way.

The area that surrounds the campsite is very nicely situated to be easily accessible to the Eskdale Trail and is around 2/3 miles away from Muncaster Castle (not even that really). We initially went to conquer Scafell Pike but thanks me clever old me we would've had a hard time with the OL1 Dark peak map, brought the wrong one. So we ended up on a nice hilly walk along the Eskdale Trail and pretty much ad-lib'ed until we reach Irton Road station and got the La'al Ratty back to Ravenglass which is seconds away from the campsite, literally up the road.

The only criticism I would have for TENT CAMPERS is the short hill you have to climb to get to your tent, but hey I'm just lazy and it's really not that bad as my girlfriend tells me. I'm not even going to let this affect my scoring it's that insignificant, I'm a man, I have to moan about something.

Over-all if you're looking for a Hilton Hotel equivalent camping experience, here's the place. The price is above the standard, but it's well worth it. We felt indebted to Sam and Andy for everything they did, we will definitely be coming back to return the favour and many more times in the future.

Our first time at Ravenglass site having visited the town on numerous occasions but previously staying on the Eskdale site. We couldn't arrive until 7.30pm, this was no problem to the friendly site managers. We had our choice of hardstanding pitches and chose one with a great little garden area! The next day we had a problem with the van, the managers offered their toolbox which was gratefully received! Superb stay, great staff, couldn't do enough for you. We'll be back between now and New Year when we've booked on the site for the New Year BBQ bash! Highly recommended!

This is the first time we have spent New Year camping and we chose this site having read the reviews as we do not take a car and so we wanted somewhere with plenty of activities near at hand and with access to cycle routes. This site was so good that we booked an extra night.

Our motorhome is quite large and we were offered a choice of pitches so that we could decide which would be the easiest to access.

The toilet blocks were definitely the best we have encountered, absolutely spotless, hot free showers (not the push button type), free hairdryer and nice and warm too.

The shop was reasonably well stocked with basic essentials.

There is no park on site but there is one very close by near the rail station. Despite this, our kids declared this the best site they had stayed on. This may have had something to do with the super efforts the wardens went to for the New Years Eve barbecue which included pirate hats and cutlasses and marshmallows to toast, even though there were very few children on the site at the time. This was all despite having no electricity for part of the day !

The nearby steam train is a must and the pub at the other end of the line is dog friendly and serves good food. Bikes are allowed on the train if pre-booked and we cycled over to Eskdale for a pub lunch then caught the train back, which was very welcome as it was extremely cold.

We didn't have time to visit Muncaster and it wasn't obvious whether or not it was open during our stay, but it is well within walking distance and certainly within cycling distance.

The road to the site is winding and quite hilly but with care it posed no real problems for us.

We will definitely return to this site and have no hesitation in recommending it.

We have just arrived home after spending the New Year at Ravenglass. An excellent site with amazing toilet, shower and washing up facilities. The best we've been to by far. The wardens were fantastic and despite the weather causing turmoil with the electrics they managed to get it all fixed and have a New years gathering within the space of 8 hours. They went the extra mile to make everybodys day memorable. An excellent position for walking and even some routes for those of us mad enough to run. The site itself is peaceful and relaxed. We will definitely be back. A big well done to Andy and Sam you did an amazing job.

I was utterly delighted with this site. The facilities were excellent and very well cared for. For example, there were fresh flowers in the shower block even in November. Andy and Sam were very helpful and friendly without being intrusive in any way. The site itself is peaceful with trees and shrubs. The estuary is a minute's walk away with its stunning views where three rivers meet. You can walk easily from the site to Muncaster Castle with its famous house, owl sanctuary and gardens. Then of course there is Wast Water and Scafell Pike inland.

A wonderful stay. We will definitely be returning!

We chose this site from the caravan and camping site book as we had not visited the western side of the lake district before. We booked for 3 days but found the site and the surroundings so nice that we stayed for 6 nights.

Our motorhome is large and we were towing a small car, but we were accommodated admirably and were greeted and treated with great courtesy and help.

The access to the small town is minutes by foot and the nearby beaches are lovely, as is Wastwater and Waterhead. The toilet block was excellent. Although warned that TV and internet access was poor, we were able to get both quite satisfactorily.

A visit to Mucaster Castle is a must.

This is a lovely site for a few days break, the wardens looking after the site are very helpful and pleasant, the facilities are absolutely spotless. The fresh flowers in the ladies facilities is a lovely touch. There are plenty of dog walking areas.

There are a couple of pubs, plus the Ratty Arms at the station.

The site shop was well stocked with all the usual things and daily papers could be ordered.

There is only the one shop/post office in the village itself.

A rail trip on the l'al Ratty railway is a must and the cafe at the 'end of the line' at Boot is good. Lovely areas all round for walking and watching the wild life.

On arrival there was a bit of a queue to get in. We were surprised to see how busy this site was at this time of year but Andy & Sam were very welcoming and we were soon on our pitch. Sloping pitches so levellers needed. Excellent toilet facilities, very clean, with one of the most powerful showers We've ever had! Well stocked licensed shop.

The village of Ravenglass is one of the most peaceful places we have ever visited. We spent a lovely afternoon sat watching the boats and wandering around the village. The railway station is next door to the site where a trip on the La'al Ratty steam train is a must. We also took the main line train to Whitehaven where we spent an enjoyable day around the harbour & shops. If you go to Whitehaven you must visit Crosby's fish & chip shop where you can get a great meal, sit in or take out.

We had an evening meal at The Ratty Arms in Ravenglass. The food was really good and not too expensive.

We would definitely visit this site again.

Have been to this site many times, always a great arrival and such a clean site, staff are always helpful and tend to walk round the site in the evening and talk to the campers. Small shop with basic, s and fresh local bread etc, nice walks, Toilets and showers always clean and warm. Good walking country, wild deserted beaches, local fresh produce available and craft centre within a few miles. Millom and Havarigg about 10 miles away. Raven glass has a small steam train that runs up to the start of Hardknot Pass were ther are the remains of a Roman Fort. Well worth the visit if you like to unwind and do nothing. Would recommend to every body.
