We stayed at Walls campsite in August 2004 and found it to be clean, peaceful and well managed by helpful owners, all that we required after a non-stop journey from Skye, arriving tired and hungry to a warm welcome. It has since changed hands but I imagine it will be fundamentally the same. However, if you are the type who spends a lot of time on the campsite you will want more information than my review provides and you should therefore, read the other reviews. For us, set in a wood, just a few minutes walk from the village of Ravenglass which is actually "the land that time forgot", it was perfect and we have returned several times since. Sit outside the Holly House pub on a summers evening when the tide is full, sipping your drinks as the sun goes down over the dunes on the seaward side of the lagoon, and you too will fall under its spell. There is another pub, the Ratty Arms which is where the enthusiasts who man the miniature railway drink after work and if you want stories from the railroad, track maintenance in the peace of the valley, (hardwood sleepers from Australia, steel track from Workington and engines built and repaired in their own engineering sheds, all with an air of Trumpton about it) this is the place to be. There is a somewhat eccentric shop in the village where you can buy items of food, newspapers and other odds and ends, a craft shop, the Ratty Railway to Eskdale, the main line railway station and the aforementioned two pubs. Take a ride down the valley on the 15” guage ‘Ratty’ and return to childhood as the open carriages rattle and weave down the track, travelling some stretches at breakneck speed and at others barely above jogging pace. The track winds alongside the river in and out of sun dappled silver birch glades until reaching Eskdale Green where you can enjoy lunch and a pint at either the King George IV or the Bower House (or indeed both, if the day is hot, the birds are in song and the talk and laughter flow as smoothly as the drinks) and return on the next train. Atop the hill behind the village is Muncaster Castle commanding a view down Eskdale toward Scafell Pike that Ruskin described as “the Gateway to Paradise”. The castle, open to the public during the summer season is a must (with luck, as you muse upon the different characters that have walked those stone floors, you may glimpse the elderly owners, the Penningtons, appear unexpectedly, perhaps having emerged from a secret door and crossing a room to what you imagine must be another secret door, probably in the library, behind shelves of false books. The next person to cross your vision you might well expect, could be Tom Fool, the ancestor Thomas Skelton) give your imagination free reign. Well, this is how we saw it all; perhaps there were a few too many drinks supped on those magical summer days. I have broken my rule of not disclosing favourite places and just hope it isn’t going to be packed next time we visit, try it yourselves and suspend the passage of time.

Summer 2003 A nice site in a nice location, ideal for the railway and many local walks. The only downside was that we were in a Trailer Tent, so we had to pitch in the "caravan" section, which meant a nice flat pitch (the site is quite slopeing with lots of tiers for the caravans), but the ground was really hard with lots of hardcore - thus the pegs were really difficult to get in. I have to add that the the owner kindly offered us a loan of some extra strong pegs and a large club hammer, these with some of the bigger pegs we had were sufficient to erect the tent. We would probably go again, but ensure we had more strong pegs.

June 2004 Thoughtfully provided picnic tables and bricks (for BBQ) turn this from a good to a very good site for camping. Too many caravans for my liking, but at least most of them were empty (they have 25 touring and 25 seasonal pitches, plus 10 tent pitches).
As well as the Ratty Arms (which is popular with steam railway enthusiasts), there is the Holly House in the village, which has more of a "local" flavour.
A great place for a relaxed and varied visit to the hills, lakes, countryside and seaside.

Aug 2002 Really good little site with all the facilities you need for camping (And also kept very clean). The little camping area is excellent, with the 10 pitches set in a small wooded area, in a tiered formation, so you`re not on top of each other...You even get a set of bricks to set your stove up on (Nice little touch)...The site is 2 mins (And I mean 2 mins) walk from the Ratty Arms, which serves excellent food. The Ratty Narrow Guage railway is also a stones throw away, which is well worth a trip...Theres a nice beach at Seascale (5 miles up the road), Muncaster Castle (1.5 miles) and a chippy in the village...What more could you ask for...The staff are really helpfull and we would definitely go there again...

June 2002 A great little site close to Muncaster Castle. Space for 50 caravans and 10 tents, no statics. Very clean amenities which include shower and toilet blocks, Laundry room and washing-up room & small shop. The owners Kieth and Stephanie Bridges were extremely helpful and very friendly. The Ratty Arms is close-by and serves a great Cumberland sausage! A site well worth a visit.
