A friend and I decided to spontaneously go camping yesterday, we left around 6.30pm heading for Cheadle in Manchester but could not find the campsite, therefore we set out for Hayfields, hoping we would arrive before 11pm. Luckily we arrived around 10.30pm an a friendly employee allowed us access to the site, pity us in a quite location as not to disturb other campers, but not before telling us know where the toilets and pot wash were located etc. Whilst struggling to put up the tent, another employee came over and provided a head light to help with seeing the tent etc.
The following day there we were greeted by friendly staff throughout the day, and advised on attractions to do, there was no rush to leave the site, especially as it poured down all day!
On leaving we went to reception to pay and were very happy with the price, and given a temporary membership code which can be used to get discount next time we arrive. We were so pleased with everything.
Even the surrounding area was lovely, quite apart from the stream nearby, wild rabbits and birds were all around throughout the day, and there are many surrounding areas to go on walks. In the local area of Hayfield there is a village full of shops, post office, pharmacy, hairdressers and pub restaurants. However, caution must be taken when driving around as road are quite narrow in places.
The only criticism I have is that the signs on entering the site are very small, even so that we drove right past all the was to Kinder reserve.

We stayed at Hayfield for 4 nights Whit Bank holiday. We loved the site, wardens very friendly and helpful, toilets and showers always clean. We didn't have a problem waiting for showers but went mid afternoon and early evening, the block was empty at that time. I know some have complained about the toilets being closed for cleaning but they let us in even though they were cleaning them so it wasn't an issue.
We found the site to be quiet, as the road only goes to the Kinder Scout car park, the planes didn't bother us at all, our 5 year old loved watching them.
We did get a sloping pitch and would try to make sure we got a flat one next time. The site was full over the weekend but it never seemed full or busy. It was quiet at night and tents were kept pitched at least 6m apart which made it feel quiet spacious even though fully booked.
We will be returning as we thought it was a great site. For us this site had everything we needed, clean toilets and showers in a peaceful location.

My partner and I visited this site for our very first experience of camping, and I think it was because of this site that we're hooked on it! We went on a beautiful cold and sunny spring weekend in April for one night to test our tent and equipment, and after getting a little lost on our way there (don't rely on Sat Navs) we made it to the site.
We went to Hayfield specifically as a base for climbing Kinder Scout, and it couldn't be in a better location. You can walk straight out of the site without having to drive anywhere. The village is only just down the hill, although we didn't venture in - we were too happy where we were!
Our pitch was tucked into the corner and very quiet - in fact I was struck by how peaceful the site was despite being nearly full. The facilities were fantastic, two big shower/toilet blocks (one gents, one ladies) with 3 or four showers and half a dozen loos in each, which were always spotlessly clean and well kept. I don't think I ever had to queue to use anything. They have a little shop onsite too that sells the basics.
I don't feel we got to take full advantage of this site as we wre only there for such a short time, but we are planning on going back this summer and can't wait!

I stayed at Hayfield at the end of October for the last weekend of the season, and my goodness was it cold!
Having driven up from Ipswich on a Friday evening, I arrived at 8pm on the dot and was warmly welcomed by the wardens of the site, who also invited all visitors to an end-of-season bbq they were holding that evening. Pitched my tent in complete darkness and it was that cold my 70/30 gas stove wouldn't stay alight from a full canister!
Unfortunately the weather was pretty naff so I didn't manage to get all the way up Kinder as I had planned, but found a lovely pub in the town, which is a short walk along a lovely riverside path that runs beside the campsite.
Was very impressed by the location of the site, also by the facilities and the welcoming from the staff. Their local knowledge was excellent and I even met one of the wardens as I was walking through the town who stopped and chatted (mostly about the weather!) having recognised me from the night before.
Will definitely be returning, probably several times!

The wardens are delightful people cant do enough to help you the site is well kept showers and toilets immaculate also nice and warm The views around the site are spectacular. Excellent for walks. There is a small shop on site for basic stuff you can get a paper delivered and milk but village is only a short stroll along the stream all in all we had a wonderful time and will definitely be going back.

I went to this site from 12th August 2008 for 9 days. We are are a family of 5, with one teenage son and 2 under 10. They all really enjoyed there time here.
The site is well located for outstanding walks to and around Kinder Scout and other peaks. Also a perfect location for driving in the area, with short trips to Buxton and Glossop. We used very little petrol in our time here. If its walks you want, it is all on your doorstep.
The site runs alongside a river, which can be noisy if you are pitched on the river side, but you get used to it. At night the background noise of the river can keep you awake a little, but it also drowns out other noise on the site and the aeroplanes flying overhead in the early hrs of the morning.
Each pitch has an allocated number for the larger tents so you are sufficiently spaced apart. There is a small shop on site where you can buy some basics, like fresh eggs, bacon, milk, butter, bread and scented candles for the gnats. You can also swap coolbox ice packs for frozen ones at 45p a time. The village shop provides a lot more food basics and toiletries. It is about a 15 minute walk.
There is little to criticise on this site. The staff were helpful and kept the site tidy and the toilets and showers clean. There were also washing up sinks with provided bowls and drain racks. The water on site was always piping hot and you could get scalded if you were not careful. While we were here the site was peaceful and the nights quiet.
I have 2 constructive criticisms. First, the site has little drainage. So if you get constant heavy rain rain as we did for the first few days. The water will not disperse quick enough and if your tent is pitched in a dip, you are likely to experience some degree of flooding in heavy rain. This was a big problem on the lower end of the site, where most of the water ran to. While we were there some parts of the lower site in the near the woods were unusable and became boggy. So avoid the dips.
Second. While there were plenty of large wheelie bins for your rubbish, located by the washing block, there were no recycling bins.
I would happily return to this site and recommend it. It really is in a beautiful location. I look forward to our next visit!

First time I've stayed here and walked in the area as well. The site was very neat and tidy, although the toilet block which was clean could do with some updating. It was busy as you would expect of an august week-end but but there were no noise problems from fellow campers. That said hayfield is on the flight-path of Manchester airport and you can't help but notice that. But it is set in a lovely area. There are plenty of shops and pubs down in the village which is walking distance away.
The site is ideal to get onto the dark peak and some great walks.I will certainly return to there.

Just returned from a weekend camping at Hayfield and really enjoyed it. This was my first time camping (therefore did no cooking) and walking and thought that the campsite was excellent! Very clean amenities, lots hot water in the showers and staff were lovely. There were two fields and both were popular with families - so no lie ins!
The town is great too but a little hazardous walking back in the dark after wine as no lighting!
We are total foodies and we ate breakfast and 1 dinner in the sportsman pub adjacent to campsite which was really good quality and reasonable, seen a band in the Bulls head pub on the friday night and went to Grumbleys for dinner on the Saturday (very nice). We also saw a wedding come out of the church and stayed to watch some of the local cricket game on the green - really lovely setting!
The walking is also very good in the area - we did not rise to the kinder scout challenge but instead did the lantern pike walk at 5 miles.
Overall, very enjoyable weekend and looking forward to returning but will def be taking a torch for walking back from the pub and some earplugs for those loud mornings!

We stayed for the third time last year (2007)
We love this site because of the lovely walks and friendly staff.
The site is kept really clean and the toilets and showers were good.
The ground beside our tent did get a little water logged when it rained and if we had pitched a little further across from where we were, we would of got very muddy, so keep an eye out for the dips in the grass.
There were kids kicking balls around but it didnt bother us. They were enjoying themselves and keeping themselves entertained.
There are some really nice pubs and resturants nearby and a play park which was great fun with a long slide built into a hill and a sand area.
We had a great time on a bat walk. We walked along the road away from the village, out of the site and go to the right. There were loads of bats.
It is also good for cycling.
We will certainly be returning and its great for families.

Have just returned from 7 nights at the Hayfield Camping and Caravanning Club site - marvellous. A lovely little site that sits at the bottom of the Kinder.
Joan and Kevin Nelson run the site and were extremely helpful. We have a Vango Aspen 500 dlx which actually is a huge tent but we were easily accommodated with lots of room to spare.
The site has 90 pitches but there doesn't seem to be any set layout and they accommodate what they can where they can. The site is split in two with the toilets and showers in the middle. Only small gripe is that there are only 3 showers for the ladies and three for the gents. The site is a little gem and the Club should seriously think about spending some money on the place!
There is a small shop in the reception area which seems to cater for most needs. However there are two superstores within 10 miles of the site.
Footpaths from the site to the Kinder and South Head means that you don't have to rely on a vehicle at all.
The Sportsmans Rest is a pub at the top of the hill which can be walked to in about 5 mins from site. There are numerous pubs/hotels in Hayfield itself which is about a 15 minute walk.
All in all a great site and we will be returning.
