Second visit to this site, we love it, its a great allrounder, excellent loo's very clean, they are closed at 11.00 for cleaning. The people running the site are very friendly and great with the kids. Rabbits running all over the site which delighted the children, views are stunning and near to nice walks. No play area but with a great park a few minutes walk down a pretty path that follows the stream it is not a problem. The park is great for all ages, skate boarding, adventure play area for the older ones and a big sandpit and picnic area for the little ones. Cricket played most weekends and two good pubs. Also down by the local newspaper shop is a little path that goes on to a couple of levels by the water...very pretty. Good for reading the Sunday papers.
I read the other reviews and was worried for our first visit but I can assure you it is my favourite site. No clubs, arcades or noise but the whole family enjoyed it. One tip...take some cream for the mozzy bites! Well it is by a stream and woods.

July 2005 This site is quite small, but is very close to the village (15 min walk along the river) where there are loads of good places to eat. We had a very good meal in the Royal and an excellent Indian in the George. Both were very child friendly. We had a bit of a problem getting fed one night. First we tired the Sportman's bar which is very close to the campsite. We walked in at 8.50pm, and although they were still serving food they stopped taking orders at 8.45pm and would budge on that rule. The food is meant to be very good, but the landlord is a bit peculiar. We then walked in to Hayfield and tried the Packhorse which also has a good reputation for food. Unfortunately it was just after 9pm and they stopped taking orders at 9 and wouldn't serve us. The Indian however is open 'till late and was great.
We were very warmly welcomed by the site staff and had a few good conversations and a bit of laugh with them over the first couple of days. Then we discovered that they were actually the assistanmt managers and when the 'real' ones came back it was a different story. Again time was an issue. Woe betide anyone attempting to walk through the open door to the shop a minute before 9am!!! Also seem a little stressed by the computer booking system.
On the whole though a nice clean site. We probably won't go back for while as there was no play area for the kids. We knew that before we went, but didn't realise what a difference it makes to have one.

July 2005 This is a lovely site. The wardens are really friendly & helpful, and the toilets & showers were nice and clean.
The site is on two long narrow fields, and is set out so that you're not too overlooked or overcrowded.
The wardens like to keep the site quiet and peaceful and there's a "no noise after 11pm" rule - shame there isn't one for early mornings when nextdoor's little darlings start up!
Plenty of outdoor activities nearby - good walks, Lyme Park (National Trust)etc. It's a 15 mins walk into Hayfield for choice of pubs, chip shop, Indian restaurant, and a general store and a 15 mins drive to New Mills if you need a bigger selection of shops.
We'd definitely go back again.

April 2005 Great site; best to get on first field if you can as gets sun longer and better views and ground not so wet.
Friendly wardens but I can understand a few of the comments.
Toilets locked for 2 hours for cleaning but that means they are very nice and clean!
Superb walks from the site and 1/2 mile to lovely town to stock up (site shop could be better).
Don't bring your gazebo! can be very gusty and wardens refuse to let you put one up.
Definitely worth a visit.

March 2005 We must have visited on the wettest Easter weekend on record! The area seems to hold a really damp mist which can make camping a little miserable sometimes. Nevertheless we had a really good weekend, but I have to agree with a previous reviewer that the camp-site wardens / managers are very abrupt. We were under the impression that it is acceptable to arrive at a C&CC site anytime until 8pm, we arrived at 6.10pm and received a very frosty reception, our friends who arrived at 7:45pm were told they were "very lucky to have a pitch at all at this time of the night", and the attitude continued throughout the holiday. We are aware there have to be rules on a campsite but we felt the loud announcement "It is now 11am ladies, don't be long" shouted into the toilet block upon cleaning time was a little uncalled for. And believe me, none of this was in jest, we felt really unwelcome, and for want of a better word, naughty. Wo betide you step out of line on this campsite! The nearest pub, The Sportsman, was a real disappointment. We were impressed with the quality of food and drink but found the landlord and staff very rude indeed, there seems to be a disregard for the fact that campers probably bring in alot of money for them! On the other hand, the village shop was fantastic, friendly and having everything you could possibly need food-wise.

August 2004 We visited this site frequantly in June, July and August. A great site quiet, peaceful and friendly. This site accepts trailor tents, tents and mobile homes but acccess is restricted due to narrow roads in village. The wardens were friendly and helpful as all our wardens are. We will be going again this year.

June 2004 I don't know about others, but I always like to visit a site before I book, and this site was no exeption.
I always visit in my works van (saves money on fuel), and was greeted by a very arrogent and nasty warden. This seems to be the one of the qualifications for camping and caravanning club wardens, as I have visited several sites and always had the same frosty reception, maybe due to the van and the fact it does not have a towbar fitted, but I feel that as a member of the club and a potential customer I deserve some form of courtesy.
This site does not accept caravans, only tents and motorhomes, on most other sites our trailer tent would count as a tent (including other C&CC sites) but on this one it counts as a caravan and is not allowed. No electric is available on site apart from the 2 wardens CARAVANS guarding the front gate.
Needless to say I am not recomending this site due to attitude of the wardens, the lack of electricity and the cost of the pitches.

July 2004 Stayed at Hayfield for a week and left still wanting to stay a bit longer.
The facilities are basic compared to some Camping and Caravanning Club sites, (no individual wash cubicles or parent and child washroom, but this isn't a problem to me) but they were always clean and had plenty of hot water. Although there is no playground, there is an imaginatively designed playground beside the river a short walk towards the village. In the village, there are 5 pubs, 2 restaurants, a butchers, greengrocers, post office, general store, fish and chip shop, cycle hire centre, information centre, bus station with regular services to Glossop, New Mills and Stockport among others.
The holiday site managers and assistants were very friendly and helpful, as were all the campers on the site who I spoke to, not to mention the friendly rabbits that will come very close to your tent. It was nice and quiet at night even at the weekend when fully occupied, apart from the planes to and from Manchester airport, but I soon got used to this and I hardly noticed them after the 1st day.
There were midges when I was there, but no where near as bad as some areas I have been to, but remember to pack some repellent just in case.
Lots of footpaths from the site take you into the surrounding countryside, plus, if you like cycling, you can hire a bike at Hayfield (near the bus station) and cycle along the Sett Valley trail to New Mills (though if you walk rather than cycle, you can get a bit further into the town along the trail as the cycle route ends on the outskirts, but walkers can continue right into the centre). New Mills is an interesting town on many levels, its well worth spending a day there, walking by the riverside and over the Millenium Walkway.
I did manage to find a couple of child friendly pubs in the village, The Royal Hotel, which is very popular for meals, and also the George, built in the 1500's and supposedly haunted. This is not to say the other pubs do not allow children, but none of the pubs actually say "families welcome" on their signs, but it pays to go inside and ask.
The only downside to this site for me was (and this is just minor really) but I do love to sit in the evening sun, but due to the trees and hills around the site, you are in the shadow in the very late evening sun. No problem in the morning and afternoon though.
I will definately go back to Hayfield again when I want a nice peaceful week, but will take more toys for my 3 year daughter to amuse her at the times when there are no other children of her age on site.

July 2003 I'm still thinking about the wonderful week I had here this summer. The wardens, who I had become friendly with when they ran C&CC site Chipping Norton last year, prompted my visit to Hayfield this summer. There is no electric on site, so gas is a must. I can't remember ever having such a relaxing week anywhere. This camp is a treat for the stressed out worker looking for tranquility and old fashioned camping.
The scenery is breathtaking, walks straight from the tent flap, the air is so good and the site well run and delightfully friendly. Not for those of you who like discos and night life, but a treat for those of us who like peace and quiet and birdsong. The dogs and I thought we'd arrived in heaven. Definitely on the list for next year!

july 26 Nice looking site. I wouldn't recommend it to families though -there's no play area, sandpit etc. Mine got fed up after a while of playing in the trees. We had to search for a good long while for a pub suitable for kids. The on-site "shop" was miniscule -ok for the odd packet of sweets. Gates were locked at 11pm til 7am -so bear that in mind if you like a late social life.
