We stayed here as 'first timers' at the end of April.
For £10/night this is amazing value. The booking system was relaxed but no problem.
The site Is ideally located in the grounds of the pub. The pitching area is very flat and some areas are sheltered by trees. It has a decent playground which kept the kids very busy especially while we were pitching. There is no EHU for tents. The
Toilet block, showers and washing up facilities more than adequate. You need to pay £10 deposit for the key.
The peak village outlet shopping centre is the other side of the hedge which is useful as there are 3 shops which sell camping gear in case you have forgotten anything.
The pub itself was very good with excellent food and an elegant beer/eating garden.
For the walkers there are a few ideal treks out out rowsley which makes it an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area.
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here and will definitely return soon.

Well, we tried to be a little more adventurous and went further afield for this visit - I wish we hadn't bothered.
The people were unfriendly, the pitches small and cramped. The site looked untidy and unkempt. And the showers - the least said about them, the better!
The local pub was the best attribute, but it didn't make up for the disappointment of this site.

We have just visited the site, 24th Dec intending to stay for three nights over the Christmas period, and we were very disappointed.
We use this site often during the winter period and it is often two thirds full during this time, however when we arrived there was just one motorhome pitched up. This should have warned us,but we paid £10 deposit for the key to the showers and toilets and pitched up for the night.
In the morning we found that there where no facilities at all. No heating in the toilet block or shower rooms and everything was frozen.
You could not even use the chemical disposal or fresh water points due to lack of water. We where not told this when we booked in, but luckily we had not paid the site fee which was due after the Christmas period. We returned the key and outstanding money for the one night and went home. At £18 a night we expected better service.
We have just returned from the Chatsworth caravan club site and on our way home passed the g&c site and there was only one van pitched up. I am assuming that the problems we encountered over Christmas have not been seen to.

This was our 3rd year staying here, over the busy & wet August Bank Holiday weekend. It was a vastly improved site too, the pub garden looked great!
The potholes filled in. The site was fairly busy despite the weather & no problems with pitching or getting keys for the toilets/showers. The play area was very popular with the children. Have only one complaint regarding the toilets, no hand soap!
The shopping outlet is handy & some really good bargains found, including the pie/ cake shop, yummy bakewells!
We also use the steam railway that takes you through to Matlock, great fun for children & adults alike, plus reasonably priced too. We will continue to use this site, its a true little gem & the Landlord is great.

Visited this site a couple of weeks ago. The site was good, the pub was good, and for once the weather was great. The only problem with the site is the showers. Very strange set up. Matlock and Bakewell are very close by and well worth a visit. Not sure that I would go back there which is a shame because it is in perfect location, however will keep an eye on the reviews and if the showers are improved I could be easily tempted back.

Used this site for a 1 night stopover after picking up our caravan from the midlands.
Site very small and basic, all the units are packed in tight if we did want to put our awning up we would have had to tie it to the caravan next to us, toilets and showers very dated and could do with an update.
On the good side the site is at the back of a pub which after a few beers and a nice meal made up for the the above woes.
Staff in pub very helpful, did not have time to explore surrounding area as we were only there on a one night stopover but from what I have read in the other reviews seems that there is plenty to do and see.

There were some lovely easy walks from the site and Bakewell, Monsall Head etc. Accessible easily.
The pub is very reasonably priced with good portions, of a decent standard but not cordon bleu (we ate there twice). The staff (from all corners of the globe) were outstanding and very friendly.
The site is clean, pitches fine but the facilities (1 gents wc!) need extending.

First visit to this campsite, with organized (small) group. Plenty of room at present, although it was weekend and very busy in the pub in daytime. Just a few tents in the camping field.
Facilities £10 deposit for a key - which I did not need. From outside looked fairly tidy but basic. However bins emptied and site clean. Abysmally wet weekend so very muddy.
Looking back to previous review in 2008 it mentions bad potholes filled in - WELL(no pun intended) they're back! Take a torch if you are coming back to van at night, what looked like puddles actually went right over my trainers and filled 'em up.
Nice meal in the pub - lovely polite staff. Meals reasonably priced. Site a bit stiff at £18 per night but offset by the surrounding shops and places of interest + EHU & there is WIFI.
Don't know how booking will work in the nice weather. It seemed very informal(as previously reported here). So I will ring to check - then make a dash for a pitch. Wouldn't want to risk it if I was coming a long way.
N.B. Parents! Deep river at edge of site.

We booked this site for a club rally and were told no problem and that we could pitch together, however on arrival we found it to be 'first come first served' and we were spread out plus no pitches had been reserved and they ran out of pitches ! ! so booking is irrelevant.
The site is actually quite nice and has a decent play area and access to the river which the kids loved playing in. They keep the site clean and tidy and is reasonably well laid out but does have a few things that let it down.
There is only one toilet in the gents which means there is normally a queue and the showers are a very strange layout, there are two showers and the entrance door enters into the first showers changing area which you have to walk through to get to the other shower, so if you're getting changed people have to squeeze past you.
The fresh water tap is outside the gents toilets with no drain so the area is always wet through which means the toilet floor is always wet and muddy. The toilets were cleaned once a day but soon got filthy due to the water outside the doors. There are plenty of shops nearby for groceries etc and the area has plenty to see and do.
I would visit again and wouldn't class it as a bad site it's just a bit strange amenity wise.

Just returned from the site today, its our first outing and what a lovely site to start with.Everyone so friendly.
The staff in the Grouse and Claret are so nice and very proffessional and polite a credit to the manager. The services on the site are basic but ok.
Surrounding area full of things to do with the shopping outlet next door. There is a children's play area which is full of good quality play things, next to that is the pubs beer garden so with older children you can sit and have a relaxing drink while the children play. We were told that some times in bad weather it floods in certain areas but it didn't rain too much while we were there. The area for tents looks flat and well grassed. You don't book a certain pitch therefor you take pot luck where you are going to be. All in all a reasonable site.
