Lovely site spoiled by the staff in the pub who were rude and ignorant, the caravan side was very well maintained with a flexible approach to where to pitch but my advice would be don't go too close to the river or you may be swamped with midgies. The site is great for kids as my 5 year old learned to ride his big boy bike on the 'racing track path' however beware the little ones as it's right next to the river. I would go back as the site was nice and well located but I will be ready to complain about the service in the pub (which owns the camp side) if necessary!

What an excellent stay on their caravan site. Peaceful, scenic and very clean. Pub owner welcomed us and was able to choose a pitch. The toilets and shower block was clean, warm and access able.
Lovely food if you don't want to cook and excellent beers and wines.
Breakfast was available the next morning if needed.
Good shops nearby and historic buildings but secluded enough to just sit and read in the sunshine. Good for walkers. Park for children near by.
Good value for money and would recommend friends.

When is the management going to spend some of the money the site makes? I have been to this place several times in the last 2 years as it is convenient for me, but no more. The site service road is a joke unless you have a 4x4. In places its that badly pot holed you must secure everything in your caravan else it will be all over the floor before you leave the pub car park. The pitches were once level, I`m sure. What is more worrying is the electric hookups are dangerous as some of them the covers are just hanging on with 1 or 2 screws instead of 4. Children could quite easily get into them. From 6. 30 am the delivery lorries start arriving leaving the motors and refrigeration units running while they are there, quiet they are not.
When the new management took over in 2011 I thought there may be changes, but other than certain certificates appearing in nice frames near the toilets, nothing as altered. It is a shame as the site COULD be a nice place but as it is and top price charged £20/unit plus awning/night ALL YEAR. NO NO. Chatsworth, a little gem, a little over £12 off season and spotless.

Just returned from a 2 night stay at the Grouse and Claret. Considering some previous reviews we were a bit apprehensive, but have to say we had a great time and will certainly go again.
The pub/restaurant is lovely and the staff really helpful and friendly. We arrived early on the Friday (about 11am) and were told we could pitch up straight away. On leaving on the Sunday, again we were told we could stay as long as we liked! Admittedly, it wasn't packed so that may not always be the case. You can't pre-book specific pitches, but not many places do these days.
The caravan site is just behind the pub and has about 30 level pitches, the vast majority of which are hardstanding and have EHU. Although adequate, they are on the small side so an early arrival is worth it to pick the best one's. Although it was busy, it didn't feel too crowded. We were there with two units so asked if we could pitch awning to awning. Usually we find this is not allowed, but the staff were fine about it here - a bonus for us as we had three young children between us.
The River Wye runs across the back of the site and the views are really pretty with the river and a backdrop of fields and hills. The pub has a lovely garden which backs onto the site (but doesn't intrude)and a children's palyground which was clean and well maintained. Through a gate at the side you can access the Peak Outlet village retail centre (not particularly inspiring shopping wise, but ok to kill an hour)
We didn't use the showers and toilets as we tend to use our own. However, they looked well maintained and as other reviewers have said, there are only a couple of each - I would image it could be an issue when busy with tent campers. There is a £10 refundable deposit for the key.
The tent field is to the side of the pub and wasn't as flat as the caravan area. There are no marked pitches though in the camping field, and talking to a couple of 'regulars' they did say it gets too full and a little noisy when the weather is nice - we didn't have any problems though.
Heavy rain on the Friday night did cause some fairly big puddles on the pitch and around the site, but they cleared within an hour or two of the rain stopping. Rock pegs are a must here though as the ground is pretty tough!
The site is well located for Matlock, Bakewell and the surrounding area's and there are some nice walks on the doorstep.
£20 per night with EHU is about average these days and didn't seem over the top (£5 one off fee for awnings).
All in all, I would say a nice little site.

Firstly the very good news that the previous management retired in September 2011. The new landlord seems a decent bloke and keeps a great pint of pedigree. Ate there last night and the meal was great and will be eating there tonight sat the 5th. The whole atmosphere seems a lot better.
The site possibly is a little tight but has a nice aspect units and vehicles just seem to be getting bigger!
There are only two showers but I would have thought most people have their own. The shower this morning was clean and warm but I am not sure about the ranch style doors.
I would say to anyone who has been put off over the last few years give it another go perfect location for Matlock, Bakewell, and Chatsworth.

Just returned from our Easter break @ the Grouse & Claret, Very close to a retail outlet for you shoppers, the pub itself is very good, as is the food and service. But the caravan site oh! what a let down
Packed in like sardines 30 plus units gents toilets, 1 wc 2 urinals 2 showers, ladies 3 wc's and 2 showers, it wasn't to bad for the ladies but the gents had to queue not very nice when you really must go.
What would also be a good idea, if a mop and bucket left in shower, like other caravan sites so you don't have to wade though mud to have a shower, and @ £ 25. 00 per night with awning I would say not value for money.
Sorry but we won't be back.

Stayed for 3 nights at bank holiday- our second visit. We were 3 families with 6 children between us.
The playground is really good fir the kids and kept them busy especially when pitching up. Good toilet block and washing facilities.
The pub and food is very good but the owners are not very welcoming and at times were rude to us.
The pub serves breakfast should you not want to cook your own.
The adjoining outlet village is very handy and we picked up a few bargains especially from the camping shops there.
You can take your car to your tent while pitching but then return it to the car park 50 yds away.
Site rules state you're not allowed to leave your car at the side if your tent but this was ignored by a lot of punters and their cars clogged the site up leaving little room for the kids to play. We reported this but little was done.
There were a couple of tents who were still up shouting and swearing into the early hours so make sure you pack your earplugs.
At £10/night (no EHU) its still great value but at that price can attract a few undesirables.

Lovely smallish site, we have been here every July with a large group for the last 10 years. Plenty of toilets, if you use the pub or the outlet village during the day. The pub is great for a meal with the family, and I understand you can book a table now, with the new landlord, which is great for big parties.
Perfect location for Bakewell, Matlock and Chatsworth. Perfect for walking, catching the bus or using the nearby Peak Rail steam train. Great flat site for pitching the tent, and a cute playground for small children.

Well first of all I would like to say that after reading some of the reviews I nearly changed my mind about going. But after much deliberating decided to give it a try! Oh my goodness were we shocked, it is an ideal location everything you could wish for.
The site is snug, you pick your own pitch on a first come first served basis and it can be little hectic. If you go a little earlier like us at about 3pm then you will miss the rush and get the best pitches. There are a few pot holes here and there but just be careful.
The food at pub was fab, the staff are really friendly. There is a lovely beer garden which overlooks the park for the kids.
Toilets and showers are not the best we have seen but not the worst, they are adequate.
I loved this site it was everything we wanted and will be definitely returning in a couple of weeks.

This site is in the village of Rowsley close to Matlock, is situated behind the “up market “ public house down by the river. This site is ideal for families with children as the river is clean and safe for them to play in, and the pub caters for them too.
It is a clean and well maintained site, but lacks adequate shower facilities, there were only two ladies showers housed together with no privacy, but again ideal for families
All the visitors to the site were very friendly, and it had a great atmosphere. Non of the campers were able to receive a television signal, but being that there was a retail park next door we were able to buy D.V.Ds. Which were being swapped amongst the campers.
This is a very popular site, and although it was just before a bank holiday, we were packed in tight with awnings becoming a problem. But having said that it is a definitely a “return to”.
