Had a lovely time, food at the local was nice staff very helpful. Shopping village right round the corner, childrens play area. Toilets ok never any soap in them though? Complaints there was way too many tents squashed into a small site we where literally tripping over guide ropes there wasn't any room left to play any outdoor activities at all. There wasn`t any privicy at all. We would have gladly paid more (£7.50) just to have a little more room this really needs sorting out! Showers were either boiling hot or freezing cold! so owner of Grouse & Claret a little more room if you want to see us back!

Just returned from a wonderful weekend at this site. Very flat pitches for all tents The down side the lack of showers, but if you get up early enough this is not a problem, or shower that in day. Good childrens playground. Will be returning in August for a long weekend

Having just came back from a weekend here and can I say - wonderful and cant wait to return. Having the pub on site was great. All the staff were lovely and friendly and the pub food gorgeous. A couple of downsides really - no dog walking area as such although if you pick up after your dog then theres a small area nr the camping bit where they can exercise, the showers were cold (when u switched them on they were cold and even though they warmed up when they went off again they came back on cold), the washing up area water wasnt connected and the pitches were a bit water logged. A bonus was that we had a picnic bench at the side of our pitch and we saw that most pitches did.

The downsides do not out way what a great time we had. We just sat and relaxed and have quite a few beers whilst chilling. Great and cant wait to return - must try the duck on the starter menu its gorgeous!!

Have stayed here several times (our first in our new tent as new campers) and have been back. Kids love the playground and we do not feel under pressure to use pub at all. Went in for a quiet drink one evening very friendly people. Showers basic but OK for weekend, but need more hooks for clothes - we took camping chair in to put clothes on. Looking to go back this year but fully booked for all bank hols (we bought a caravan this time not sure will be able to watch kids the same but gonna try it ) Will definitely go back, had a good walk round shopping complex. All in all a good site

A pleasant site, convenient for retail outlet next door. Would have been a good weekend if there had been half the number of tents. - Guyropes were overlapping to get us all in, and there was no way the emergency services could have got to any tent in the middle. - And that squeaky child's swing!---
Possibly a good site to visit in winter, as it is open all year.

 August 2005
2 adults...in a tent

We booked this site in advance so were a bit put out when we arrived and there didn't appear to be any pitches left. However the owner showed us to a bit of grass next to the childrens play area, about 2 feet from our neighbours. Tent went up, pegged in tightly as we were next to the main walkway/drive through bit. Moved the car onto the car park.... we were told that we couldn't have it next to the tent as they needed the room for more campers!

On the recommendations below we decided to try the pub, the staff were lovely and said it was fine to just have a drink but directed us to the bar area rather than the family dining bit, it's hard to tell which is which as it really does just look like a restaurant. Ate her the next day and the food was just OK, nothing special, similar to a brewers fayre, usual microwaved stuff. Would try somewhere else next time.

Had a little walk around the area, which is full of gorgeous old buildings, very pretty.

Facilities were fair for how busy the site was. No where near enough showers, gave up waiting in the morning and had a late afternoon one instead. Toilets were ok, plenty of loo roll. Hot water was a problem, virtually non in the showers and non in the pot wash in the mornings. Very poor.

The location of this site is fantastic, a mile or so out of Bakewell (beautiful town!) and only a mile or so from Chatsworth House (well worth a visit, if you like walking park at the free carpark and walk through the grounds to the house. There are plenty of places for a picnic but if you wait till you get up to the house you'll be sharing it with chickens!!! Had a fantastic day a Chatsworth.

Arrived back at the site on Sat evening to find an amazing amount of tents in the camping field. Couldn't believe that people had been put next to us in the walk/driveway, they were so close that their tent (not the guy lines but actual fabric) was covering our pegs....OH was really mad if the occupants had been there he would have asked them to move a bit but they didn;t return until late. Complained to the owner who just said it was very busy. When they did return it turned out it was a group, sat up drinking with music till about 1 am...it was like they were in our tent...well, they almost were!

On the last day we were told we could stay on the pitch as long as we liked so we had a drive to ashbourne/Matlock and other little towns in the area..very pretty.

In general it's a nice site, I'd go back but not in peak time, owner got a bit greedy and there's no real space to sit ouside your tent. Only £7.50 a night. Fantastic location, small outlet shopping village next door (no noise from it though). Kids play area was popular and they seemed to be having fun. Staff are friendly and helpful, if it's busy you need to park your car on the carpark.

Had a look at the caravanning area and it looked much better, proper marked out pitches with some hardstanding, nicely spaced ecept the ones leading into the camping field as everyone walked through them to get to the facilities.

Only thing we weren't happy with was the overcrowding.

 June 2005
Following some of the reviews, I was a little nervous of this site, but due to the excellent reviews of the pub itself, we gave it a go.

Price was £7.50 per pitch per night + £5 refundable deposit for the toilet / shower key.

I am pleased to say we were not disappointed. The pub itself, yes, is excellent quality food. You cna have a beer in their without food, but admittedly, does feel a little like you ought t be eating, but don’t let that put you off. Staffs are great and food excellent.

The site itself is just off the A6 (literally) but fairly quiet as just passed a sharp bend. The campsite is next to the pub, but also next to a through path, that leads form the pub to the local shopping centre (brand name shopping, camp shop, tea room etc) Also DO NOT get money out in the pub and take a £1.50 charge. There is a cash point at the local shopping 1 minutes walk away.

Regarding facilities, there is one WC, BUT also two urinals, so not as desperate as I thought when I read some of the reviews. They are cleaned every morning, so if a bit muddy, yes they will get a bit messy, but there is always toilet paper and hand soap. Also, there are two showers for both men and women. When you think that they would squeeze to put 15 tents on the site, although you do share this with camper vans, it really is not that bad facilities wise.

There is a lovely river at the bottom of the site which you can walk out off two ways, although the walk to the left is short lived, BUT, does take you right down to the river.

We went 1st weekend June 2005 and had an excellent time. Lots of lovely bike routes to do and plenty of walks. Only a few miles from Carsington Water and the high peak trail.

All in all a lovely site, and don’t be put off by the fact a path leads though it. it really is pretty quiet and people are always pleasant.

Would go again for sure, but with so much of the UK to see, may not go back for a while.

We have just spent the last four nights at this lovely site, the restaurant serves beautiful food, we were also welcomed to have a leisurely drink without eating. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The scenery is lovely and lots of nice walks locally. The only downside to this site is the lack of mens wc's and the ladies showers are not very user friendly, when i tried to get a shower a child appeared looking for his mum, they were very dirty and the building itself not warm. There is also local public transport if you wish to have a break from driving, we were informed to get a zig zag daily ticket £3.80 each and you can travel on the buses within a large area as often as you wished throughout the daily period, this was cheaper than a return ticket from rowsley to matlock. On the whole this site was well worth the visit and will definately be returning.

Just a few points to add to the previous reviews:

The site - I think they must have improved the booking system since Janxs' review in October 2004, as it was very organised this time. The owner had a book with my name in it, which he ticked off when I booked in. I didn't use the shower block as I was only there for 1 night, but the toilet block was clean and warm.
The hardstandings were very welcome for winter camping, we chose one right on the riverside. I did think the pitches were rather close together here though, a standard sized awning would have reached the next pitch, leaving no space for car parking between units.
It was surprisingly very quiet at night to say it was behind a pub and so close to the A6. Fees for 2005 are £12.50 for a hardstanding pitch incl. electric for caravan or motorhome, and £5 for an awning. There is a separate field for tents at £7 (pro rata) per night.

The pub - I would have called this a restaurant rather than a pub, not sure if we would have been welcome if we just wanted a few pints. As soon as we walked in we were shown to a table and waited on at the table even for drinks. The food and service was good though, and we would eat here again.

We would stay here again, just for a short stay, though (I would like to be able to use the pub just for a drink on longer holidays) and without an awning, as I thought £5 per night for this was a bit steep.

This is a very nice campsite at the back of an excellent pub. The food at the pub was first class and the service was too. It was quite busy even though it was a week day in the middle of October - so I guess it is a very popular place for locals to eat too.
The campsite itself is very well set out with hardstanding pitches and the location is ideal for exploring the area. It was a very quiet site and we would definitely return. The only downside is the toilet and shower blocks. They are very basic and the shower block was not heated and on a cold October morning this was not good news! The shower block consisted of 2 shower cubicles in both the ladies and gents blocks and were of the push button type that only run water for a few seconds before you have to push it again. With there only being 2 cubicles in each block It must be horrendous in the peak weeks when the site is busy and there are lots of people wanting to use them. If they could improve the shower and toilet facilities this site would be absolutely perfect.
