This is without doubt my Undisputed Champion Campsite of the World.

We came across this site in 1995 when my girlfriend at the time (now my wife) and I bought a tent and decided to go touring round Devon and Cornwall in the Whitsun week.

As soon as I found a sheltered pitch, as it can get windy up there and set up I was happy and felt at home.

The site has been modernised gradually over the years with an extended bar and new shower blocks etc. But still has a personal feel without being too big. It has a nice bar with good food, heated pool and great shower blocks.

The walk out of the back of the campsite down to St Ives is absolutely lovely and peaceful with a nice stream meandering down the side of the road. When you get to the top of St Ives I found that this is one of the nicest looking places I've been to. St Ives itself has everything you need, great restaurants, The Mex being our favourite and good pubs. Sitting outside The Sloop having a few pints is one of lifes great pleasures even if some of the staff have never been acquainted with customer service and not to mention the nice pizzas you get on the front and the pasties you get from Presto's on Fore Street which in my opinion are the best. There is also a bus back to site in the summer season.

There are four main beaches which are all first class and I found being on Porthminster was just like being in The Med.

After the first year we went in 1996/97/98/99/2002/03/04 and 08.

The only negative I can give is that the tariffs have risen considerably and especially with 2 kids on board is an extra £13 a night, so for the prices you pay you can go over to France inc. Ferries and extra fuel for less and have more or less guaranteed sun.

However it is the best and despite that I'm definitely going to give it a 10 out of 10.

I cannot really add much more than has been said below, but it really was a fabulous site, the best we've stayed on! We were in Consols with lovely views over the sea, when it was clear enough to see it!

I recommend the walk into St Ives and the bus back which is only £2.50 for a family of four or £1 per adult. We didn't go on the seal trip but saw the boats coming back into the harbour and the seals which trail them!

I also recommend St Michaels and Marazion village which has some lovely pubs and shops. We got there around 11.30 ish and the tide was just coming in so managed to wade out on the causeway which was fun!

We visited Penzance one day and had lunch at the Admiral Benbow pub which is done up inside like a pirate ship! I wasn't impressed overall with Penzance town though, full of budget high street shops.

One point to note is that children's scooters are not allowed on the site. We took ours and I said the girls could only play around the tent but they got told off! Also the shop on site shuts between 1pm & 3pm. There is a Tesco about 5 mins drive away and the reception staff can print you out some directions.

Just back from a lovely week at Polmanter; we could certainly see why it is a 5 star site.

Welcome at reception was good and we received lots of information on things to do in the area. We were pitched in Morvah in one of the non-serviced pitches. All pitches are separated by hedges and we had plenty of room and on a clear day, views of the sea. However, it was windy so I would recommend bringing a windbreak and shields for cooking stove.

The Morvah toilet blocks were great; lots of showers and toilets and always clean. There were hairdryers and plug sockets by big mirrors for straighteners / mobile phone top ups which was handy. Dish-washing facilities were housed in the same block and seemed to be always clean and tidy. There were ample water points and bins with recycling bins on site too.

We did not use the pool as the weather never got quite warm enough but it looked good. The games room over the bar was pleasant with two pool tables and a table tennis table which was always in demand!

The bar and restaurant were fine, with the conservatory being a lovely, light space but personally felt they missed a trick and could have been a little more upmarket. The food was tasty and the portions were massive but the menu was very basic (spag bol, ham and chips etc.) - e.G. Nothing to reference local produce of West Country or proximity to fishing ports. Additionally, the entertainment revolved around bingo! Must add that it was pleasant and we spent some fun evenings there, just they could have done more with it.

In terms of the local area, the walk into St. Ives (and back again!) was pretty and took about 30 mins. It felt quicker if you take the snicket through Consol area rather than from the top of the site. St. Ives is a really lovely little place - the beaches are stunning and there are a host of restaurants along the harbour area serving seafood, pizza, pasta al fresco. Also we would recommend the Hub Bar for delicious mojitos and a friendly, lively atmosphere.
On our first day we got fish and chips to eat on the beach BUT were warned to watch out for the seagulls - they are ruthless! Also even if you are not into art the building itself and the cafe at the Tate overlooking Porthmeor beach are worth popping into - fantastic cream teas!

We visited St. Michael's Mount which was just magical; also Eden Project was an interesting way to pass a rainy day. Reception has lots of ideas for walks and visits - would love to go back and explore more!

Went the first week in July. We were warned by friends before we went that it can get very windy at the site! They are not wrong!

As the site is on top of the hill it was very wind. Our holiday was ruined by the wind. On the first day as it was so windy we had to go out an buy a small 2 man tent as we could not get our main tent up.

Next day we got the main tent up but spent the rest of the week thinking it would blow away! Finally left a day early than planned and went to Trevornick near Newquay for a week which we found more sheltered.

It is a great site for caravans though and the toilets and showers were spotless.

Will not be going back again.

A nicely maintained, family orientated site. Toilets/showers always spotless. Pitches are very well maintained and of a good size and the site itself is in an excellent location with sea views and with several walks from the campsite. Great outdoor swimming pool that was always quiet.
Club house ok but food not stunning - try the pub at the top of the road, cant remember the name but home cooked and very reasonably priced with interesting, friendly locals. St ives is a 20 minute walk or a 5 minute drive. My partner and I went but would recommend to couples / families alike. 8 out of ten!

We have just returned from our first week long, family, tenting holiday (had a couple of local, weekend practice trips first, just to be sure we liked camping) and had booked Polmanter on the strength of the reviews we had read here. We were not disappointed!
What a fantastic site this is. The staff are very friendly. The facilities were spotless, we were sited in Morvah which is closest to the 'new' shower block. There are numerous shower cubicles and then 4-5 private shower rooms, ideal for families. We never had to wait, despite it being half term holiday and the showers were hot and powerful.
There are plenty of facilities for children, an indoor games room (with pool tables, a table tennis table, a video game and several fruit machines) and outdoor heated swimming pool (which was lovely and warm even in inclement weather) a large outdoor adventure playground, a putting green and tennis courts. The on site shop was very useful, as was the takeaway shop and there is a lovely family friendly bar for the evenings.
We stayed in a Montana 12 (with side canopy & windbreak) and had plenty of room on the pitch, even after we had parked our car. We were very sheltered, which was a godsend given the gale force conditions we experienced on the first two days. Our pitch (244) was fairly flat, although it should be noted that some of the pitches, particularly the non serviced, are on a bit of a hill, so you may want to double check with the site before you book.
The walk into St Ives is to be recommended, if only for the views, although you may want to use the bus service for the return journey (back up a rather steep hill) which stops right outside the site. All in all, we have struggled to find anything to fault this site on and can't wait to go there next year.

We visit this site every year, the only thing that you can't guarantee is the weather! the site is expensive bordering abusive. However, this site is safe for kids (the main incentive) the equivalent to a 5 star hotel. It has a place in our hearts as a very nice site for a family holiday. I will start saving for next year!

Palm trees, out door pool, on site chip shop and restaurant and within walking distance to the very beautiful St Ives!

My husband and I have just returned from a three day break to Polmanter and could not find fault with anything. We had a friendly welcome and was given plenty of information about walks and bus times etc. We were given a choice of pitches if we hadn't liked the one we had been booked onto. The site is very well set out with spacious pitches divided by hedges and the views towards the sea are beautiful.
At this time of year it was very quiet so not really able to comment on the facilities. The swimming pool area looked good as did the childrens playground. There is a huge sports field with plenty of room for ball games, and an extensive dog exercise area.

The restaurant and shop are closed until later in the season. There is a patrol van going round the site at various times which was reasuring. We didn't use the showers because we have our own but we had a look and they looked very clean and well maintained.

The walk into St Ives is lovely, it takes about 30 minutes and if you don't or can't walk back there is bus which stops nearby.St Ives is a very busy little place at any time of the year, the only drawback for us is the traffic trying to negotiate the very narrow roads. It should be made traffic free as far as possible. There are lovely walks especially along the coast path to Porthkidney which has the best beach in the country. It follows the little train track which goes to Lelant and further I think. This is a journey worth taking just for the lovely views.
There are plenty of eating places, catering for all tastes and pockets. Although we thought it was quite expensive everywhere. The crepes we had from a place I can't remember the name of were well worth the money though.

If I had to find a minus I think the shop should have been open even with a limited stock. We do like to get a newspaper in the morning to read with our breakfast and there are no other shops nearby as far as we know.

When we left because there had been heavy rain overnight we got stuck in the mud. This was no problem and a very nice tractor driver was sent to pull us off and no charge was made.We would definitely return here.

A little late submitting a review but only just got access to the internet and this web site.

We found the site through our campingcheque gold card and there was no problem using it here.

I must agree with all of the reviews I have read that this is one of the best sites we have stayed on. The toilet blocks (particularly the top) one was superb. The location is excellent and we walked into St Ives a number of times (always used the bus on the way back which is a very good service).

The pitches were of a good size and with some shelter. We have electrics for the tent and the supply was more than adequate for our heating, cooling, lighting etc.

The bar was good and we used the take away which was also good. Didn't try the restaurant however. The swimming pool looked nice although we didn't try it - getting a bit nesh in old age.

We are used to doing most of our camping in France or Spain where we use only four star sites which normally have superb facilities. I have to say that Polmanter is definitely in the same league as most of the continental sites we have stayed on (and we have stayed on over 45 over the past few years). Well done Polmanter, keep up the good work.

Travel to Cornwall at least 6 times a year and have just returned from our last trip this year to Polmanter. Now I know a site can be quite different in October compared to the height of the Summer season but this site is a real WOW. Clearly it is an well established site and lots of thought has gone into the facilities that they provide. The pitches are well laid out with hedge dividers and our pitch easily accomodated our VV500, day tent, Traler. Family estate car and room for the dogs to play on their tie downs.

The toilet/shower blocks were spotless and of a very high standard with some private toilet/shower cubicles. They were also heated despite the fact that there were few people on site, which was a welcome for that last run at night when the temp is down to 4 degrees. The shop pool and bar were all closed but seemed to look well kept.

Reception staff were very helpful and always happy to answer the numerous questions. The dog walking field was really handy to give our 2 a walk at night although the dog bins were not emptied during the 4 days we were there.

All in all it is probably the best site we have visited in that area and we have been to a few as we travel down to Cornwall at least 5 times a year to visit relatives. Clearly the abnormal good weather made a difference to our break but we would certainly like to visit the site again next year.
