August 2003 Contrary to other reviews we found this site great. Yes it does have sloping pitches but if you're careful you can get pretty flat and we've got a large 9 man dome tent. The toilet blocks were clean and kept clean every day by one of the staff. The site was exceptionally busy and it is huge but we all managed to get showers which are now free. There was a little noise in the evening but it was kept down, no loud music, Guests dogs were all kept under control and the shop while a little pricey stocked everything you might need including tools and camping accessories such as spare guy lines, lamps, gas cylinders and tent repair kits. The beach is 5 mins walk away and there is a nice pub, the Ship Inn, nearby and a somewhat expensive restaurant, The Smuggler's Haunt. Also there are two chippies and a gift shop and a surf shop within walkng distance. We love the Gower and Port Eynon and will definitely be going back to Carreglwyd.

July 2003 Nice Scenery. We found a lack of facilities. 1.The only rubbish bins on such a large site are near the entrance to the site. There should be bins on all fields. 2.Only one decent shower block with 4 showers, the other block was disgusting. 3.Only cold water in one toilet block and no soap. 4.Washing up facilities inadequate no plugs in the sinks. 5.Only one water tap in a field of about at one point,40 tents and one fire point. We have camped now for 35yrs and for the charge of £14 per night for two people we thought this to be poor value.

sept 2002 We were looking forward to a nice relaxing few days with the kids. Unfortunately we chose the wrong campsite to do this.
On arrival the most important thing to the owner was to take our money, we were then told to pitch in the next field (the site was quite busy). The pitches (fields) are not flat in the slightest, so be prepared for a 'roll down the hill'!
Upon pitching up, I went to use the shower block - the one in our field had apparrently been closed for 2 weeks already, which meant going to the next field. To my disatisfaction I found only 4 showers (3 working!) to a campsite which was currently holding close to 150-200 people, so a wait was on the cards. When asked if the other block could be opened, the reply was....'Why?'
The shop was very small and expensive, with only the very basic things on offer. Ie. Spades; buckets and a selection of pumps with which to inflate your bed! (some foodstuffs).
At night the site was very noisy - Somebody was letting off fireworks on the site until late (after midnight) However after eventually getting the kids off to sleep, we also tried to do the same knowing that we had to get up early to beat the rush to those showers!
On day 4 we were asked if we could take our tent down and re-erect in the next field as the owner now wanted to close this field down!! At this point we did so, & promptly headed off home vowing never to come to Port Eynon again. All this for a £13.50/nite plus shower money. Brilliant value??
Beware also of the 'smugglers haunt' restaurant - this is not only expensive but they will also charge you an extra 2.5% for paying with your plastic.
Ps: On the way home we stopped on by Oxwich bay and Caswell bay. This is where we will be heading when we next visit the Gower. The Beaches were also a lot nicer - especially for the kids.
All in my honest opinion.

28.7.02 This campsite is best suited for those who are attracted to the beach more than they are to the basics of a decent campsite.
It is certainly close to the beach. However it is a huge site (so has the plus point that you should find room.
The pitching is completely disorganised - "pitch at will" is a nice idea but not when you find that you're at the back of the field and can't get your car out because another line of tents has pitched in front of you. The campsite says that pitches must be ten feet apart but seemed to be quite happily packing them in.
It tends to attract large numbers of weekenders from nearby whose sole objective is to drink as much as possible. The site was extremely noisy at night with loud music running from tents and cars into early hours. If this is your thing, you'll be delighted.
Guests dogs are left to roam the campsite at night and can cause trouble. The site boasts its own security but apart from ensuring that people didn't get in without paying, there was no sign of staff elsewhere on the site.
The campsite's own website doesn't publish the correct tariff which is above the Gower average and you have to pay extra for showers. That said the shower blocks are filthy with litter overflowing from bins that didn't seem to be emptied over the weekend we stayed. The showers have broken tiles, dead insects and debris from other campers.
Gower is a beautiful place and Port Einon a pretty village but to us unfortunately, this campsite was the blot on the landscape.

We love this place! Facilities are minimal, shop is tiny - basics only - and campsite can get quite busy. If you want a decent pub or shop Swansea (30min drive) is your best option. But.....the people, campers and staff alike, are very friendly, the beaches (5min walk)are clean and pretty (plenty of crab pools too!) and you can wake up to a fantastic view of the bay every morning. There are plenty of places to explore - ruins, other beaches, pretty walks, seeing wild ponies on Cefn Bryn (not sure if that's the correct spelling!) etc all within a ten or 15 minute drive/cycle.
If you're after masses of facilities and things to do then Carreglwyd isn't for you. Probably not the best place for young families but good for those who want to veg out on the beach and hunt for crabs all day!
