September 2003 Without wishing to appear controversial, I must disagree with much of what is said in the reviews above. Yes the warden is grumpy and has little social skills, but when we were there he did not "patrol the site excessively" and he did not "check for receipts" - in fact we only saw him once when he clearly saw both our Springer Spaniels off their leads and running round enjoying themselves; this was clearly against the rules printed on the back of the ticket which states dogs must be kept on leads at all times. The warden chose to say and do nothing about it, which was nice of him, as our dogs are very well behaved!
No 'noise deposit' was taken from us - we were simply asked to pay what was due.
The warden told us he doesn't like gazebos merely because he has had lots of trouble with them in the past; he told us campers stand underneath them and drink until 3am, make lots of noise and disturb other campers who then complain - this is why he doesn't like gazebos. However, when we assured him we wouldn't be doing that, he had no hesitation in letting us put the thing up. Seems reasonable enough to me!
I agree that the toilets and showers are poor and this detracts from an otherwise superb camp site. Take your own soft loo roll yes, but also (in the Gents at any rate) take your own soap and towel to wash your hands afterwards, because those basic needs weren't there during our stay.
A trip to the bank is necessary before leaving home, to get lots of ten pees for the shower - one shower cost me 40 pence! In fairness I have to disagree with the person who said the showers are "scalding". The temperature of the water was fine when we were there, my 8 year old lad showered without any trouble or complaint.
I also have to disagree with the person who said the Nag's Head has poor quality beer with no real ale. When we were there (last weekend at the time of writing, 26/9/03) they had 3 real ale pumps and they didn't look new! The real ale served was of a high standard (I know of what I speak in this respect!) and there was a choice of Bass and 2 micro brewery ales (Gray's). (The real ale pumps are at the bar by the back entrance, opposite the family area, so if a thirsty camper came in through the front door I daresay they might not see the real ale pumps and therefore assume real ale isn't on offer?) Kid's meals are very reasonably priced and there is a family area. It's a good pub. I didn't get to the Rambler, so can't compare the two.
A knockout pub though, and one which made it into the Good Beer Guide, is the Cheshire Cheese - drive from the camp site towards Hope and you pass it, on the right hand side. Parking is limited but it's worth the hassle. Excellent food and a good range of real ale well kept.
Looking at the reviews above, I can't help but feel the camp site has had a bad press which is unwarranted - but if that keeps people away, great, all the more room for me, as we'll certainly be returning!
The surrounding countryside is breathtaking, especially on a morning when you can watch the rolling mist change the scenery by the minute... absolutely fantastic. It was quiet in the evenings, definitely a camp site for families.

July 2003 Coopers is a large campsite suitable for all types of campers, tents, caravans, motorhomes etc. I was camping alone with a two man tent and was told to go to the upper field which is on a slope. The lower fields are more for caravans / camper vans as they have electrical hook-ups.
The owner was very helpful and the campsite has a shop / post office and cafe if you need them. The shop sells most kinds of foods / newspapers / souvenirs / camping & outdoor gear etc that you will need and does an ice pack freezing service at 10pence each. The shower block is relatively clean and the showers are 10 pence for about 5 - 10 minutes with the box on the inside of the cubicle. Temperature was hot and adequate for a good shower. The toilets had cheap tracing paper style toilet roll so you'd be best to take your own if you want comfort.
BBQ's are allowed so long as they are raised above the ground to minimise grass damage. There is the "Old Nag's Head" pub across the road from the campsite entrance and "The Rambler" 5 minutes down the road towards Edale Crossroads. The Nags head was more of a locals pub with poor quality beer, no real ale, only John Smiths or lager but guiness was available. The Rambler down the road has real ales and the folk train every few weeks.
The fees are £4.00 a night plus £2 returnable deposit if there is noise, cars are charged at £1.50 a night?
I'd recommend it enough to go back again.

2-4 August 2003 Firstly I must say that despite the worrying reviews about the owners of this campsite, they were really not too bad! They were not especially welcoming, but mainly just kept out of the way and 'Basil Fawlty' only emerged to check tickets every morning.
The campsite is well located and is right next to a pub serving typical pub meals for hungry campers, further down the road is a slightly more up market pub and for a weekend, these were enough for us. The campsite also has an on site shop selling all sorts of 'forgotten items' and there is also a cafe serving breakfasts and basic/childrens meals all day.
The toilets and showers were basic and whilst not unclean, fairly dusty! I can confirm the toilet roll was tracing paper - so bring your own. The showers were 10p each, but there was never a queue and they were hot. There were several sinks for washing up and sometimes a queue at busy times, again they weren't the most modern design, but they did the job.
There was a mix of families, couples and younger groups on the site and as a young group we were placed in back field, with most families towards the front fields, and although Coopers say 'no noise' after 10pm we found the campsite was still fairly busy until midnight, but mostly with people just chatting - so for families there was no problems with loud music etc.
I would recommend this campsite to families and younger groups as it seemed to have something for everyone wanting to have a relaxing break. However for those wanting lively nightime entertainment this may not be the place for you!

July 2003 The most unpleasant campsite owners I have ever come across. I will definitely not be going back. Scorching showers, so do not let children go any where near them unless you plan on a trip to casualty. On the up-side, the location is perfect and the site is large and flat, but yet quiet at night. The shower block has what is needed. Frustratingly, a very small investment would make it really nice, but I get the impression that the owners are not the type to bother.

July 2003 The site views are wonderful. The ground is quite sloping so if you are in a caravan you need some blocks to jack it up.
The warden we found was ignorant and wouldn't speak to you otherwise he didn't bother us.
The toilets and showers were not good. If your affraid of spiders you'll hate the cobwebbed place. By Saturday night there was not toilet paper left (if you can call it toilet paper it's the shinny tracing paper stuff). The showers cost 10p but I didn't dare have one although other people were having one.
Apart from the toilets the site was very nice with good walks.

1998-mar 2003 Lovely views from this site which is right at the start of the Pennine way. It's mainly used by walkers and climbers due to it's good location. The facilities are basic (slightly smelly) but it's really good value. All you've read so far about the owner is true. If Basil Fawlty ran a campsite he'd do it in a similar manner. If you're not easily wound up he can be better entertainment value than any cheesy duo in the site bar.I've been back there with friends because of him rather than inspite.

September 2002 Quite a pleasant site. The site has pretty basic toilets/showers/washing up areas, although I have seen much worse and they were kept clean. The site is on a farm, and is well serviced. There is a cafe, post office/village store and Pub just outside the site, and Edale train station, with pretty much hourly daytime services from Sheffield and Manchester is about 5 mins walk from the site, so its great for staying at without a car. The site is on a hillside, with pretty good views. Loads of pleasant walks around hope valley etc. from site. The site owner is not especially friendly and patrols the site rather excessively checking for receipts etc. however on the good side, they take a £2 refundable deposit off each person in case there is any trouble with noise etc, which is forbidden after 10pm and generally keeps it a quiet site. As a warning, if you have a dog, it must be kept on a lead, and Gazebos are not allowed without permission. But generally a nice site.
