Wonderful location at the beginning of Pennine Way with great views of surrounding hills. An idyllic rural setting with basic but functional amenities.
Plenty of space for tents - no booking possible. But there are only a few electric hook-ups. It is essential to phone to ensure one is available for a campervan or motorhome.
We experienced very strong winds blowing through and were very glad we were not under canvas! The site is little more than sloping meadows but benefits from it's own cafe and the 'Nags Head' serves very good meals across the lane from the entrance.

The biggest thing in favour of this camp site is the location.
Right at the top of the village of Edale, the Nags head pub just yards from the front gate and with Mam tor in front and the Kinder Massive behind it could not be better placed.
It is a shame then that the other scores I have given are so low generally, they are based on my experiences at this site and whilst I have had many visits to the area I always try to avoid the site if something else is available.
The toilet and shower facilities are adequate but strangely every time I have visited there has been 'A boiler' problem which means the showers are only available for a few hours a day, ignore (as many of the regulars do) the warning that the showers are not working and step over the red and white incident tape and lo and behold a perfectly usable shower is available, why? I can only assume that they do not want to clean the shower block more than once a day.
The site can be very crowded and no attempt is made to ensure that you do not come back to find that someone has pitched their tent in front of your door or have parked inconsiderately I understand that this is a large site but no effort seems to be made to mark out pitches or to remind visitors of the need to leave at least a reasonable space between units.
Cooper's is not the cheapest site in the area by any means and it covers a large area, because there are so many campers at busy times and because of the policy of 'closing' the showers for a large part of the day when they are open they are busy and overused, there could usefully be more facilities especially for washing up and to be really honest a little more attention to customer needs would not go amiss. If it where not for the magnificent position of this campsite I honestly think that more attention might be paid to making customers happy but as there is never and never will be a shortage of campers here I do not suppose that things will change.

We've been visiting this site for the best part of 20 years so we must like it! Coopers is a very basic campsite and at £12 per night (2 people, one tent, one car) you can get MUCH better facilities for not much more money. The toilet block has not been improved or updated for many years. Always running out of loo roll so do what we do and take your own! Showers now have new meters that take only 20 pence pieces so remember to take a supply. 20p gives you about 5 minutes in the shower. Site is mostly sloping which gives good drainage but beware the high winds that can whip up from nowhere down the valley.
Surroundings are beautiful with many fabulous walks to be enjoyed; one you are there you really do not need your car. It is the beauty of the area which keeps us going back year after year. Two pubs in the village are very popular but quite expensive. The site attracts a wide variety of people; walkers, families, school groups and people just wanting to lie around drinking all day! The owners are friendly enough and seem to work very hard, managing both campsite and farm.

Fairly basic site but adequate for short trips to the Peak District. Very convenient for Pennine Way. Great if you aren't into outdoor cooking as there's a cafe for breakfast and a choice of 2 pubs for dinner (we went to the Nags head, food was good, reasonable considering location but the wait was horrendous so order as soon as you arrive!) The no booking system was handy as it was a last minute thing for us, however it was very VERY busy and whilst the owners made sure the site was quiet after 11pm, I wish they also made people keep their kids quiet at least til 7, there were children running riot at 5am! They woke mine up, and grumpy kids don't like hiking. So bring your earplugs in summary. Would go back but will camp in the non family / group field in hope of another hours kip in the morning.

Just had a short stay at this campsite.
The site is easy to find.Turn left at the Nag's Head pub! On arrival, pull up in front of the village shop and go to the house on your right to book-in. The lady was friendly and explained where we could camp. £5.50 pppn plus a £5 deposit.
The campsite is on a slope with hardly any level ground. The top of the campsite is sheltered by mature trees which was useful as it was really windy. The grass was quite short and the site in general seemed well maintained. There are no play facilities for children.
The toilet/shower block was clean and well maintained. Showers & hairdryers 10p per go but lasted a good long time.
There is a cafe on site which served great food at reasonable prices. The village store is at the site entrance and stocks the basics.
There are two pubs near the site, we ate at the Ramblers pub near the station. Quite pricey but the food was of great quality.
We could not beleive how quiet the site was when we returned from the pub at 22:30.Even though it was a Bank holiday and fairly full!
One of the best things about this site is the proximity to some great walks. The Pennine Way starts outside the campsite entrance, Grindsbrook Clough is an excellent climb up to Kinder Scout with Pym Chair, The Woolpacks Crowden Tower and Jacob's ladder making an excellent walk. Mam Tor, Loose Hill, Rushup edge and the Lord's seat are across the valley.
You must leave the campsite before 12 noon on the day of departure, don't forget to pick up your £5 deposit.
All in all a good stay at a friendly site. 7/10

We went as two couples and had a fantastic time. This site is in a stunning location with fantastic views of the hills all around and a great walk around the horseshoe. The facilities are basic but they work and some of the site staff are not the most personable but the location more than makes up for this. Even in the rain!
The site is first come first served - we went on a Thursday evening in the summer hols (got there about 5pm) and had no problems. The site did massively fill up on Friday but there were still spaces after 7pm. In fact people kept coming on Saturday as well and it is safe to say you are allowed in to pitch in the smallest space (there are not set spaces - someone pitched in our car space while we were out) but while there were a lot of people it was still pleasant and it's good to know a space should always be possible.
We went to both local pubs and sampled the food -we preferred the Nags Head overall although the Ramblers Rest is a brighter, more airy pub. I suggest shopping for supplies in Hope as the village shop (on the campsite) is more expensive than the SPAR in Hope, and the butchers in Hope was great value.

A fantastic basic quiet campsite. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon in August at lunch time. This is a turn up and see style campsite and we were informed that during peak times they are generally fully pitched by late lunch time.
There were four fields and we choose one of the back ones furthest from the toilet block, which worked well in our favour as nearly everybody had gone home by Monday morning.
Facilities wise they were basic but adequate. Showers take 10p's and I found to wash my hair etc I used two. They were a decent temperature and there were plenty of toilets within the one block.
Dish washing facilities are behind the toilets and its a case of one tap with hot that you fill the bucket with to pour into your sink. The only frustrating thing I found was that there seemed to only be one tap for water which was also by the entrance so we had to walk quite far to fill the carrier but its not the end of the world.
You do pay a noise deposit of £5 which we got back easily and cost wise it worked out £11 a night for two adults and a dog. I was pleasantly surprised at how silent the campsite was at night and I would definitely go back again if only for this reason! Early mornings you wake to the sound of sheep bleating and birds singing. Bliss.
An ideal base for walking as previously mentioned you are at the start of the pennine way and within easy distance of jacobs ladder and kinder Scout. I also went down the road to the nearby trekking stables and they offered a fantastic two hour ride up one of the nearby hills for £40 which I felt was well worth the money.
Nags head pub does nice reasonably priced food and does allow you to take your dog in which was a great help. It gets very busy at the weekend but has a large garden as well to sit in if need be.
Overall I would definitely recommend this campsite and will be returning. A great quiet, basic facilities and ideally situated campsite.
I notice on other posts there has been mention of the owners but at the end of the day as long as you stick to the rules you shouldn't have a problem, they may not have been on a customer training course but other than for paying we just avoided them.

This was our second choice of Edale campsite but glad we couldn't get into our first choice!
Great location, great views, good little shop and cafe - we ate at the Nags Head and had a lovely(huge)meal.
OK, you can't deny the toilet block is basic (rustic!)but for a weekend it's just fine - worth taking a toilet roll with you if it's a busy weekend!
One thing we did miss in Edale, there's no children's playground. It didn't matter but we were surprised.

We stayed here because we were too late to get a place booked at the Fieldhead site in Edale. We took a chance and I'm pleased we did. Turn up early to get a good pitch (you can't book ahead). The site was very busy on Friday night and even busier on Saturday - pitches were very close.
Toilet block with showers is very basic but absolutely fine and the showers were nice and hot and 10p gives you plenty of time. The site was a bit noisy in the evening but soon quietens down later.
Best thing (apart from the amazing scenery) is the excellent cafe on site although it does miss a trick with evening trade as it shuts early - it'd be nice to have a few more options of where to eat in Edale.
The Old Nags Head Inn (start of the Pennine Way!) opposite the campsite offers good beers and food looked good but we didn't manage to eat there in the end. We did unfortunately eat at The Ramblers down the road which we regretted and should've realised since no-one else was eating! Good beer selection though.
The Penny Pot Cafe at the station was good to grab an excellent bacon and sausage bap - it's National Trust run so sources locally.
The Moorland visitor centre was brilliant to find out about local walks and attractions - we got a really good local walking map.
We're definitely going back to the area and really enjoyed our stay.
I think we got lucky with the campsite and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again if we couldn't get booked in anywhere else.

Took 'the little one' (5) for a weekend in the countryside on the spur of the moment and found my regular Edale site was full. Thankfully Coopers operates a first come first served policy at weekends.
I had never used this large and centrally located site before and was pleased to find it was spacious, flat and well drained. There were loads of family groups on the site and quietness only happened after 11pm, but the noise was only chatter, so not too intrusive, we had a 4am blast of drum and bass but I think that was from off site and they were soon cleared off (the problem with being close to a city I suppose) this didn't detract from the overall experience though.
Facilities were quite basic but adequate. Post office and cafe good value and right by the site entrance.
Ye Old Nags Head pub (start of Pennine Way) is possibly the most expensive pub in the North, VERY busy though. (the nicest pint I've supped in a while).
Overall Cooper gets a good thumbs up, basic but busy.
