 February 2005
Since my review of last week, fees on the website have gone up to £12.50 per night, which is still reasonable compared to more commercial sites in this area. Also, the site is no longer open all year. The owner probably found it unfeasible to open just for us last week.

 February 2005
We stayed here for one night midweek in February half term. We were the only ones on site, and although the site is open all year, the toilets and showers were closed, but the owner did inform us of this when I phoned to book. Drinking water, electric hook-up and chemical toilet disposal were the only facilties available at this time. The site had stone hardstandings, all set in little bays, some just big enough for one unit, some for more, but there was a grassy area to one end, which I guessed must be for tents. Anyone wishing to visit this site, specially if arriving in the dark, should ring for directions 1st, as we could see no signposts from the road. We eventually called at the owners B & B, which has a separate entrance, and he directed us further down the hill to a pair of white gateposts. I would like visit this site again in the summer, though we did enjoy the peace and quiet of a whole site to ourselves. A pitch for caravan or motorhome is £11 per night, with free electric when available. Various tent fees can be found on their website.

The Bulls Head pub, a short walk from the site was excellent, had a lovely meal there, reasonably priced, a very good pint, and it also had a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Nearby there is Lathkill Dale for walking, and the Tissington and High Peak Trails for cycling, though I would not want to cycle up the road to get there, as it was fairly steep and winding and quite busy with traffic. You would need to travel to get the best of your stay here, but you are quite close to the A515 for travel between Ashbourne and Buxton, and also there was a bus-stop in the village outside the pub.

Arrived saturday to glorious weather - 'Jim' on the caravan reception was most helpful, and we picked a site.
PM went to the pub in the village (me and my 4 year old) and had an excellent meal. In the rear was a play garden with a slide and a swing and a see saw, so at least somewhere to run off some energy.

Toilets are basic, need finishing off!! and the single shower was very busy, so walk up the hill to the house, and there are some showers there. All in all for £8 not a bad site and would go back. OK, for a couple of nights and Buxton and bakewell nice to walk round and relax - that's what it is all about!

Just returned from a lovely weekend at this camp site. Amentities were basic but sufficient and most importantly clean. Owners very friendly and helpful. Camp site was classed as full, but there was lots of room for everyone to spread out. Lots of beautiful walks available in the area. Lathkil Dale itself is stunning. Will return!

 Spring Bank Hol weekend 2004
This site is in a great location and despite facilities being limited and a bit remote, they were well maintained, clean and adequate for the population even on Bank Hol. We took 8 & 10 year old girls and were lucky with the weather so although there’s no play area they had fun exploring the site and a playing on a rope swing when we weren’t out and about. Pitches were virtually flat, well spaced and well organised for getting cars by tents without difficulty.

In summary: a basic but friendly and well run site in an excellent spot for good village shops, a nice pub and great walks. We would use the site again if we went to the same area.

 April 2004
Very basic facilities - only 2 toilets in ladies and only 1 unisex shower for whole site. 2 more up at the farmhouse - bit of a trek with small kids. Not suitable for families with small kids. Website is very misleading - we chose it because it seems to be a quiet well run site (children must be kept quiet etc) but when we arrived there were about 20 teenagers on a Duke of Edinburgh's scheme - very noisy! Also groups of 18-25ish somethings also very noisy until very late at night. Warden onsite did not shut them up.

Site is in a valley but village of Monyash high up so the site location acts as a wind tunnel. Bit chilly at night! Good site for younger people wanting a good laugh with no kids. Not good for families. On a positive note the Old Smithy Tearooms are great!
We won't be returning to this campsite
