I was looking for a site for 2 nights in early March and came across lathkill dale site, emailed Garry who was very accomadating even though the site was not officially open few a few more weeks he was more than happy to let us camp there and have available all the facilities for reasonable price, pitches at the site are of a good size with plenty of room for campervan + awning with room to spare a great touch in all pitches was the picnic bench all pitches have good privacy as are separated the facilities on the camp were of the highest standard of cleanliness, even though we were the only unit staying at there the cleaner was there every morning

Stayed here Sept 4th onwards for 3 nights, great site with a nice secluded pitch and very quiet even when it was actually busy at the weekend it seemed quiet. The owners clearly work very hard to maintain this site and also ensure the people who stay on it are content. Loved the fairy lights touch which led to the toilet block and showers of which there are two lots, 2 in each but as others have mentioned a new block is being built. Never had to queue though even on the busy weekend. Fantastic pub just 5 to 10 mins walk away which serves great food. We will be coming again and thnx to Garry for the 1st class service!

We arrived later than planned as our 40 year old VW Campervan has an aversion to very steep hills and we had to detour around, so when we telephoned to say we were 15mins away it was nice to hear 'no worries' and told directions onto site and our pitch no. 15.
Our pitch was a 'secluded bay' surrounded on three sides by hedge/ trees and included a picnic bench. After putting up our awning (which was a tight fit but ok) we headed to the toilet block near the exit, the pathway was dark but the fairy lights were a nice touch and didn't feel necessary to take a torch from our pitch but maybe a good idea for others! The toilets/ showers were 'rustic' but clean and toilet paper/ paper towels were always full. After a walk around site there does appear to be a new block being constructed which would be helpful when the site is particularly busy. In the morning there was no queue for the showers and the showers were hot and a good pressure - would prefer hooks in showers but there is a useful chair.
The area has some splendid walks and wish we could have stayed longer to do more - the walks are dog friendly (although we did get followed by cows which bothered our daughter more than the dog!). Monyash is a beautiful unspoilt village with a pub and cafe - which we didn't have the pleasure of visiting but looked busy, which is always a good sign!
The site is overall very charming and the pitch bays make it very private as you are not overlooked. No reception or shop on site which was ok for us but maybe not others - same goes for mobile signal!
A good site as a base for visiting the surrounding area, as quite central for main towns of Buxton and Bakewell.

Wonderful find, thanks to this site for that! The first class views and secluded pitches more than make up for the trek to the facilities (as mentioned in previous reviews). Checking in is difficult if like us you have no signal on your phone and have to return to Monyash to use the public phone box ( point to note, the phone box in Monyash only takes a credit/debit card and the call will cost you £2). But having said that we were welcomed very warmly and quickly shown to our pitch and given some information about the site and local area. Pitching was easy on the level pitch, and the supplied picnic bench is a great idea which we used extensively. The facilities although a bit of a trek from the tent fields are kept very clean at all times, and during our visit we never queued to use any of them. Whilst we were there we also noted that a new shower block is being built and Garry told us that they are looking at the possibility of putting in a quicker path to the facilities :). All in all a good time and this review is not influenced by the fact that Garry was good enough to give us a jump start after a flat battery!

Lovely campsite on the road to Monyash, near enough to the village to walk to cafe (fabulous carrot cake and cappucino) and pub (lovely food and allows dogs!)
Owners. Very friendly and helpful, we had to phone fifteen minutes beforehand to warn them we were nearly there. Be warned. There is very little signal in the area, which was a plus in a way as it meant a total rest from technology for us!
Pitches. We were pitched in one of the pitches which consisted of our own private lawned area surrounded by hedges with our own picnic bench. Luxurious to us! The road is a little noisy, as mentioned in other reviews, but we weren't too near it so didn't suffer. There is also another larger open camp area at the top of the site (and hill) but this is a lot further from the facilities (toilets, showers, washing up) Better views but less private, depends what you want/is available I guess.
Facilities. The showers and toilets were amazing, always clean, fragrant (!)plenty of hooks and mirrors in the ladies, and liquid soap (though hubby tells me no soap in gents. Can only imagine they had run out) I would visit the site again for the toilets. And love the fairy lights around them! There was also a fridge available for campers to use.
Dog/child friendly. We had no accompanying dogs or children on this trip (unusually) so can't comment truthfully. The site seemed child friendly, our kids have never needed play areas particularly when we camped, camping is an adventure in itself. Dog wise, I presume there is somewhere to walk your dog and I noticed dogs had to be on leads. We weren't troubled by any dogs off lead, or any noise from dogs or children (excepting the poor love who I heard screaming in the night with a nightmare. But that can't be helped! Been there, done that!)
Area. Some excellent walks in the local area, and as I mentioned the local pub (The Bulls Head) does fabulous food as does the cafe (The Old Smithy) We found both very friendly and good service. Excellent play area at back of them both too (belongs to the village I believe) We also drove and walked around the Deepdale /ashby in the Water (very pretty) Sheldon area (nice cafe and pub) Plenty of things to do in the area although we have done most of them many times (lots of houses including Chatsworth, always fabulous, market towns such as Bakewell. Bit touristy and busy for us. And many more)
Would we visit again? Yes, we would. More than a certified type field site with one shared toilet between all the site and no shower, but less than an organised club type site with on site pub which for us isn't what we look for. The only downside is the road noise, but if you get the right pitch that isn't a problem!

We stayed here for just one night at the end of the summer holidays. My two sons, 11 & 14 and myself pitched 2 small tents (1 for sleeping 1 even smaller for storing provisions. ) on pitch 3 for which after eventually stumbling across the warden (?) or farmer or whoever it was, paid the not insubstantial sum of £20! Not cheap at all!
I 'booked' by phone earlier that day. My first call I'd left a message and asked someone to call me back, - which they didn't. I called again before setting off & was told (after no mention of, apology for or reference to my earlier message. )to ring again later from Monyash so they could 'get the pitch ready' (?).
We were then told to pitch where turned out to be a few feet from the main road, which was noisy and disturbing throughout. (Given that the site was not full surely we could have been offered a quieter pitch?)
I was not told where and how to pay. I don't feel this was made clear on the phone and spent ten minutes or so walking 'round the site trying to locate someone to help me.
I did not find the manner of the man or woman who I dealt with very friendly or helpful at all. No smiles, no warm welcome. All a bit cold and distant. The jist of what the man tried to tell me was, I think, that they do not live on site. All this could have been so much better explained by phone in a friendly, thorough and helpful way.
The pitch was flat but fairly muddy and the little hedges separating the pitches neatly, thin and messy. If the idea is to provide privacy then I'm afraid it failed!
Also the nature of these little pitches meant there was no open space for ball games. If there were fields for this then again, this was not mentioned to us and we didn't see any, -nor a playground.
The facilities, by camping standards were pretty clean and loo roll/hot water not a problem. Not particularly well-lit but you expect to need a torch on a camp site. No problems there.
A strange set up- the owners not being on site. How they police noisy campers when off site I'm not sure. And you presumably need to ring them if there's a problem- but you can't because there is no signal (that we could get. ) Luckily it was midweek and fairly quiet for us so I can't comment on how noise or other problems might be dealt with.
THE PLUSES; the picnic bench was useful, location lovely, village lovely, site flat, quirky semi 'enclosed' pitches may suit some, facilities adequate.
MINUSES; price, road noise, lack of open space, and most of all CUSTOMER SERVICE and friendliness was, (to us at least) very lacking!

What a hidden gem of a campsite. We were taking our 7 year old nephews camping for the first time and were slightly worried they wouldn't enjoy camping. Needing a site not too far from home just in case. Finally we chose Lathkill and we are so glad we did. We did shoot past the entrance, if coming from Bakewell its on the right just before Monyash.
We loved the privacy of our very own area and picnic table, this is a cracking addition. Showers and toilets always spotless and even though we saw loads of people going to the facilities, we never had to queue. Water is lovely and hot in the showers. The area is superb and less than 10 minutes away was the pub, with an awesome play area for the little ones. We didn't eat at the pub but food looked lovely, and we will be returning.
We were close to Chatsworth house, Bakewell, Matlock Bath so definitely happy.
Kids loved their first experience of camping.
One minor issue, there are a few nettles, out of the way but playing with toys like frisbees etc you do find them. Paths are lovely and clear just growing within the bushes.

Visited this site at the weekend nice area though we left early because the car broke down and we had to be towed home, but the site owner was brilliant ringing the RAC for me as there is no mobile coverage if you are on Vodafone then being on call for them to show them where I was camped. A really nice site up on the top fields with lovely views. The showers etc were good. Good pub down the road and great walks for the dogs, all very peaceful, will be back. No children's area but we do not have children so was fine for us there were quite a few families there though, no on site shop but that is fine.
The owners work very hard to make sure we are happy. Wi if is available for a very reasonable charge

Just got back from a fab weekend at this site. We had never been before and were very impressed. The pitches are large and private with each one having its own picnic bench which was really useful. There weren't many showers and toilets but we never had to queue. They were spotless at all times of day and the free showers always had plenty of hot water. Very friendly and helpful owner who was happy to sort out any problems we had. With only a five minute walk to the local pub serving great food and on the edge of the beautiful Lathkill Dale (dogs paradise) this site is perfectly situated for a great weekend and we would definitely return. If I had to criticise anything I would say it is quite difficult to spot from the road and a sign 50 yards before the entrance would be helpful to avoid having to turn round in the village.

Fantastic site. We were up at the top of the site, lovely small field with planted areas providing shelter and privacy. Toilets and showers immaculate and plenty hot water in the free showers. Some of the pitches at the bottom of the site looked amazing, the site is really well landscaped so the individual pitches provide a lot of privacy. Easy walk to the local pub.
Highly recommended.
