Great campsite. Set on the edge of the Atlantic so likely to be very windy. Toilet block now complete. Two ladies and 1 gents shower plus 1 disabled. Very modern with washing machine and dryer. Microwave and kettle in small kitchen. All very clean and fresh. Owner of site, Donald, can't be more helpful. Would use again without hesitation. Isle of Barra Hotel within easy walking distance for good, reasonably priced food in the public bar.

On our second trip along the Hebridean chain it was a disappointment to note that wild camping is now not encouraged on Barra, with the site at the airport now closed. We were recommended a couple of new sites that had opened, but none were really suitable, we then discovered this site on the west coast, an area we had not really thought about, and what a surprise! This site has to be the best we have stayed on for some considerable time, we stayed, sadly, for only three nights but intend to return to Barra, and certainly to this site.
The facilities are new only a matter of 12 months or so, and absolutely spotless, with only 1 shower in the gents, but there is the disabled one if not in use. I never saw a queue even though the site was very busy. I would certainly recommend this site to anyone, and the owner was on site every day and very friendly and welcoming, he's also the postie!
The site is spectacular overlooking a small bay, and we actually were the first to spot the dolphins, and the machair wild flowers surrounding the area were amazing. Will we return? You bettcha!

This is a great campsite in a fantastic setting, with pitches directly overlooking the sea and a small rocky beach. We saw dolphins from our pitch.
Donald the site owner lives just up the road and pops in regularly to keep an eye on things, as well as to greet new arrivals when the ferry lands. He is really lovely and welcoming, and works very hard as he is also one of Barra’s postmen!
The amenities are very new and still in excellent condition, and kept spotlessly clean. The toilets have hand soap and dryer, and also cloths to wipe down the basin area and a mop for the showers. The small kitchen area has a sink for washing up as well as a microwave, kettle, and freezer (fridge coming soon). A washing machine and tumble dryer are also available.
Whilst we were there the site was full on two nights as it was the weekend of the Barrathon half-marathon, but there was never a queue for the toilets or showers, although there are only 2 showers and toilets in the ladies and 1 shower and 1 cubicle in the gents (plus a disabled facility).
About 5 minutes walk up the road is the Isle of Barra Beach Hotel which has a bar and restaurant. Castlebay is just over 2 miles away (an easy walk or cycle) and has a Tourist Information Office and a couple of cafes, as well as a small but very well stocked Co-Op supermarket.
This is a good campsite for cycling around Barra. It is on the ‘main’ road which forms a loop around the island and is about 13 miles long. We also cycled up to the airport in the north – a tiny Flybe plane lands and takes off on the beach at low tide. To the south across a causeway is Vatersay – lovely beaches and you can stop at the community hall where they serve teas and homemade cakes, as well as having a selection of local products.
Great campsite – highly recommended.

This is a beautifully situated site with excellent facilities and an extremely helpful owner but there are rather a lot of units, quite close together, which detracted from our enjoyment because we prefer a more bucolic environment.
It is well situated within Barra for access to petrol, bank, shops, restaurants and ferry port from Oban. It is easy to find the site even when arriving on the late Thursday ferry at 11pm.

Quite a busy site, especially around 9pm when the Oban ferry gets in. We stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed every minute of it. We looked straight out to sea from our cab window and saw one glorious Hebridean sunset. Plenty of birds to look at too, yes there was a corncrake in nearby Craigston heard but not seen.
Castlebay has a good Coop and excellent tea room/toffee house. Also highly recommended is the café at Vatersay Community Hall, it seems to open after 1pm.
Site facilities were always clean, throughout the say, no matter how many people were there.
Another of these Sites with an owner committed to making a success of the venture. We think this was the first full year with the new facilities. Prices were low too at £15 without ehu and £17 with.

This is a super site overlooking a small bay. Hookups to the right with grass for tents too and a wild camping area to the left. Although there is only 1 gents shower there is also the Disabled one which can be used. The site was full most days and I didn't see a queue. I think children would be tempted out onto the rocks here which isn't a good idea. That said, there are beaches within easy reach.
A Great Northern Diver entertained us for a couple of hours at low tide and you could see him swimming under water with the sunshine catching the white bars on it's back. And yes, the sun has come out at last after a month of gales!
Donald, the owner, is a really nice guy and a mine of information. The facilities are great and kept spotless with a washer and drier too.
Calor Gas is now available from a unit by the Co-op in Castlebay. Otherwise the shop on Eriskay also sells it but is shut on Sundays (and obviously a ferry journey away!). Whilst in Castlebay do the Herring Walk around the shore, they have very interesting information barrels about the herring trade which made Barra prosperous.
Castlebay Hotel does good seafood and the Hebridean Toffee Shop and cafe do fab sandwiches with local produce.
My THREE 3G dongle didn't work here despite a mast being opposite the campsite but O2, Vodaphone, Orange and iPhones all do.
Barra is lovely but do explore the rest of the Western Isles too because they are so different to the mainland and also from each other.

A very special site. The views from the pitches on the edge of the sea are superb. Could be exposed in very windy weather. The new amenity block is excellently thought out with a well stocked campers kitchen. 2 womens showers and toilets and 1 of each for the men. Good disabled shower and toilet. Washer and drier both need £1 coins but very efficient. Owner on site most of the time and very helpful.
Anyone visiting Barra should spend at least 2 nights here.

Small site but beautifully situated. The owner is lovely, still working on finishing off the site but he is very helpful. We didn't arrive till 11pm because of ferry problems but he was there to see us in. We stayed 2 nights instead of 1. Toilets and showers excellent. New building and all the little details which make a difference were there. Plenty of room in the shower etc. Used Laundry facilities and these were great. They are in the campers kitchen which is excellent and I am sure those under canvas appreciate it.

What a stunning location with great views and the sound of the sea.
The owner was busy on site sorting out the disabled facilities. The kitchen facilities are good. Clean toilets and hot water. The owner is waiting for spare bits to the male shower to enable better function.
It was very very windy overnight the second night and we were able to move the unit to face into the wind and used the hut to help too. We were the only unit on site!
Unfortunately we found we had run out of gas and the spare was empty (hired van). It was a Sunday. Nothing opens on a Sunday and there is no one on the Island currently holding gas. Not The owner's fault though so no blame to him or Barra

This is a beautifully located site overlooking a very pretty bay and headland, handy for both Castlebay (ferries to South Uist and Oban) or Tarbert. Unlike many sites in the Western Isles, this one has full facilities - electric hookups, some hard standings, toilets, showers, washing machine, dish washing, chem disposal, though the disabled facilities are still under construction. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable owner. In season, there's a hotel bar very close by or you can drive or cycle into Castlebay (ATM, big Co-op supermarket, good Indian restaurant etc) which is only a couple of miles away
