We arrived at this site. Eventually. Just remember don't use satnav! We did and it turned out a bit of a pickle getting to the site. The approach 'lane' is a bit on the bumpy side, and would imagine if you met another caravan coming the opposite way it would be a bit fraught.

The campsite itself is lovely and peaceful, it's on a large grassed area with slight slopes to some of the pitches, we were lucky as we could pitch anywhere as it wasn't too busy.

We have dogs and the whole surrounding area is wonderful to walk the dogs. You can walk right into Cromer if you wish.

On the site twice a week a fish and chip van arrives. It was very popular and certainly made a nice change.

The toilet blocks were large and very clean. Plenty of showers with ample space and hanging pegs for your clothes, also a handy little bench.

Would we return. Yes, a really peaceful relaxing site in a lovely location.

(Couple - Early 50's - look for peace, quiet and tranquillity, but with a few mod cons).

Stayed from Fri 30th Oct to Mon 2nd Nov = 3 nights

Not being a member of either club, and not having stayed on a club site before, this was a difficult one to judge. All I can do is compare it to the privately owned sites we are more used to.

Site's are never at their most picturesque at this time of year, and of course, only running at a low capacity. One loo block closed/one open. 80% of the pitches were empty. Not a problem with that, of course. Far from it.

Booked by phone a couple of days in advance, and were warned of the steep prices, as we are not members. We were even advised that 'site X' down the road is very nice and cheaper', almost to the point where I thought for a split second that we were not going to be welcomed, but once I'd convinced them I was happy to pay the going rate, welcomed we were.

Upon arrival, the whole experience was professional, courteous, and pain free (apart from the bill!). All welcoming enough, to the point that we were personally shown to our pitch. But it just seemed like something was missing?

The pitch was a little bumpy/slopey, with a bit of a bare patch, and wet of course (No puddles!), but we were allowed to spread-eagle two pitches to get the best lie of the land, which helped, and was very much appreciated.

The shower block was as per previous reviews. Always clean, very practical layout, spacious in every sense be that the shower cubicles, the private wash cubicles, in fact, each and every aspect. There's plenty of hooks, good flow of water, always hot, and all kept warm by ample radiators*. Probably the best layout I have seen thus far. Excellent.

The views are nothing special, as the site is surrounded by woods, but I suspect it looks better in the summer, with leaves on the trees, and clearer skies! It was all a little grey, damp and uninspiring. Which of course, I blame the weather/time of year/ Country for, not the site, or the C&CC! LOL!

One 'problem' I envisaged is that the layout of the pitches might not be to our liking in busier times. Plenty of room on this occasion, of course, but I wonder if we'd all be a bit too close, a bit too 'in yer face' in busier times? (I'm more used to pitches around the outside, so not looking head on into someone else's pitch/unit, or having to pass between two others’ units/pitches to get to the amenities?) Maybe that's a little unfair of me, as I'm merely guessing.

I can see what folk were saying about the approach lane. No problem for us (not towing), but I'm not sure I'd fancy towing an expensive caravan up there!

Proximity to the coast was perfect for us. Got out and about on our bikes, direct from site, and an easy ride to both Sheringham and Cromer, although between the two, it's main road. We can cope with that, some might prefer more cycle-dedicated options, which seems to be lacking in this immediate area?

*For our last night, which was also the site's last night before closing for the winter, there was no heating on in the shower blocks. It was still off next morning. I did wonder whether this was deliberate, and therefore somewhat cheeky, considering how much we were paying, but just before leaving, around 11am, I did notice it was back on, so maybe it was a fault that had been rectified. In fairness, I didn't report it being off, so maybe the staff were not initially aware. More than happy to give them the benefit of the doubt, despite my initial reaction of 'feeling conned'!

In summary, yes it's a nice site, but for us, there just seemed to be something lacking. Our overwhelming view was that it was run, very well, in fairness, by employees. Nobody came to check that we had settled in ok, or to check we knew where everything was. Nobody 'doing the rounds', and throwing in the odd 5 minute chat in passing. Maybe this shows we prefer sites that are run by the owner(s)?

It is (very) expensive, particularly for non-members, and particularly for this time of year, but we were fully aware of that before booking, so no complaints on that score. But I feel that we came away with the overwhelming opinion that, whilst it was a nice, extremely well run site, with professional, polite, and capable staff, you would expect nothing less for the money. Quite the opposite! I think we expected more, although I concede I’m not entirely sure what that could be!

Not sure we'd pay that again, when we have, in our opinion, a better experience elsewhere (albeit with possibly inferior shower facilities!) for considerably less cost.

Glad we tried it, of course. No regrets. But not sure a club site, and membership, is for us? Need to have a think on that!

Thanks for having us.

The drive to the site seemed 'hairy' down the track, wondered where I was going, but after being directed to drive around the site to park-up, while others were coming in, the site looked lively and fun to be in.

The wardens lead us to the pitch which, as C&CC warned, we needed ramps.

The walk to the top of the hill, National Trust Beeston Ridge, was breath taking, and a gentle walk down through the Caravan Club site to the station enabled us to take the train to Cromer, or you could have travelled into Norwich.

West Runton Golf Club provided a good beer stop before the walk back to the site, and look back on a good day out.

First things first, yes the approach road is grim. Apparently the C&CC blame The National Trust? If you have a large outfit and meet a similar one coming the other way you will require a stiff brandy by the time you reach reception.

However once you actually arrive things improve considerably. We were there in a busy week of the school holidays with the site almost full but found it to be a pleasant and relaxing stay. Our experience of the staff was positive though one horror story over pitching distances between units was being retold over the washing up one morning!

Our pitch was flat but some do slope gently. Rock pegs were helpful - you could buy them at reception.

Both toilet blocks were being heavily used but the staff made valiant attempts to keep them as clean as possible.

Surprisingly there was no wifi but we are also members of the Caravan Club system. This meant we were able to sit on 'our' side of the fence but use their signal off the neighbouring site.

The walking was excellent. It is worth buying the large scale OS map from reception. We made it quite easily to Cromer and Sheringham though it is probably too far if you have small children or wish to carry a lot of stuff to the beach.

Our only longer trip was to the Sainsburys art gallery at UEA, aka Norwich Univ to most people. The building, displays and café were all excellent but the parking was appalling. You either need to have a disabled badge, be very lucky, catch the bus or walk quite a way from the campus pay and display site.

Overall, a nice holiday - we will doubtless return.

This is one of the best and friendliest sites we have stayed at yet. Some of the grass pitches are sloping and you may need chocks, the facilities are clean and functional, there is never too far to walk to refill your water or empty your waste or chemical disposal. We made use of the washing machine whilst we were there with no drama. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, particularly when we needed to know the local GP facilities for our son. That said the access road is uncomfortable, it is steep, narrow and very bumpy, although we traversed it daily in the car without issue. Cromer is very close nearby and worthy of a visit or two. The closest supermarkets are Morissons Co-op and Aldi. We will definitely visit again.

This site is a real gem, we camped here ten nights and can honestly say it's the best site we have visited to date.

The road down as others have stated is a little tricky, we had a trailer so just simply took our time. We encountered no problems with other motorists/campervan or caravans respectively. It's just a simple matter of taking care and being considerate.

On arrival, we were greeted by the exceptionally friendly site staff and given a tour of the site to find an ideal spot. The site is situated within beautiful forests and does suffer from being a little uneven in places with some areas and pitches suffered from sloping issues. These suited the caravans on site that could level themselves out, we chose a central spot which was perfect for both shower/toilet blocks and the children's play area. Centre of the park also gave us a level pitch with plenty of sunshine.

The toilet/shower blocks were lovely, spacious and very well kept with no queuing due to the amount of showers per block which is quite rare and made a very welcome change.

People on site were all extremely friendly and seemed to have been returning to this site year after year, no noise issues at night either.

There are a number of walks around the site for the avid rambler and dog walkers. Cromer, West and East Runton can all be accessed via the footpaths. Our favourite walk was just out the back of the site where you can access a National Trust owned hill that overlooks the surrounding areas and can be stunning if the weather is kind, we witnessed a beautiful sunset one evening which will last with me forever.

If you love being surrounded by nature, surrounded by forrest, peace and quiet and only five minutes drive from the coast then give this site a go.

I don't know what to say to add to the great reviews to this site. It is a lovely site.

The entrance, as already stated, is tight and uneven so a little difficult for caravans but as we are tent campers, was okay for us - just had to be a little careful. There were a lot of caravans on the site, so obviously not too much of a problem just a matter of being careful. We were unsure where to park when we arrived as there were no notices but, discovered later that what we should have done was to drive around the campsite first, look at the empty pitches and choose one, then drive back to the entrance, park by a designated sign and tell the warden where we wanted to go. There are no signs telling you this, but this was not a problem and the warden just asked a few questions and took us where he thought would be suitable which was fine.

We were a bit confused on which way the warden wanted us pitch (as we use our side entrance and not the front) but it was okay. There is a barrier system and you are given a code to get in.

The pitches are quite spacious, ours being fairly flat but some are undulating. The only problem we had was screwing the dogs' corkscrew in - it just didn't hold anywhere on our pitch, but others seemed to manage fine. The pitches are sheltered by trees which proved useful on a few blustery evenings!

The toilets and showers are brilliant and there are 2 blocks. Lots of showers and sink cubicles, the showers having plenty of space and nice hot water with good pressure every time. The blocks themselves are modern and were nice and warm and immaculately clean.

There are some nice walks from the site to the beach and it is easy to walk to either Cromer or West Runton and even Sheringham if you're feeling like a longer walk (still not too far).

There is a hut that holds lots of information about the area which is very useful as it's not just theme parks etc. , there are walks and useful information.

The wardens are always around to give out information should you need it.

Dogs are welcome although they must be on a lead and there are lots of walks just outside the campsite.

The site is away from any roads, so it is really a peaceful site (lovely). I read on here that there is a curfew - this we didn't know but it does go quiet.

In summary, an excellent site with lovely walks, great location, good size pitches, great shower blocks and in a really quiet, peaceful and relaxing setting. What more could you ask for?!

(For my full review of West Runton C&CC site please scroll back to June 2014)

Camping & Caravanning Club sites have a reputation for being run and maintained to consistently high standards; West Runton campsite is no exception. I recently returned for a second short stay so here is a very brief update.

As before, I found the staff very friendly and helpful - full marks. However, the road access remains a bit of a problem: the gravel track to the campsite is narrow and quite bumpy - fine for cars but not ideal for larger motorhomes or towed caravans.

There were plenty of touring caravans and motorhomes on the campsite during my stay but not many tents. The noise curfew at night ensured the site was quiet.

The rabbits seemed less in evidence this time but the grass is still very short.

As in my previous visit, I found the facilities were kept spotlessly clean. They were replenished regularly and there was plenty of hot water.

This is a well-run campsite with first-rate facilities in a good location and I continue to recommend it.

This was the best site of our holiday. Absolutely beautiful. Clean washrooms, friendly management and lovely walks on the hill above the campsite from which there is an amazing view of the surrounding area.

There are a few pubs to choose from in East and West Runton, the sea is close by and it's not far to cycle to Sheringham or Cromer. We had planned to stay for one night and ended up staying three. The lane to the site is narrow but we had no problems as we arrived after mid-day and left before mid-day.

With our over 60s discount and the 20% September discount, our stay was a real bargain.
