Ok, been thinking about how to best review our experience and have decided to split in to two reviews, one from the point of view of our children (aged 4 and 8) and one from us, the adults that paid for the “pleasure”.

CHILDS PERSPECTIVE:

The children had a fantastic time, even on the days when it rained non stop there was more than enough on site to keep them entertained. The adventure park is vast and there are loads of soft play and park areas with slides/cargo nets etc catering for most ages, allowing the little darlings to burn off their energy. Then of course there are the amusement park rides, such as the Pirate Ship, water slides etc as well as the zoo area (Donkeys/ Pigs/Horse/Meerkats/Reptiles etc) and the superb Falconry Centre. We all thoroughly enjoyed the Falconry display, if you go to nothing else in your stay try to catch this. All the above is included in your pitch fees. Oddly, the only thing you have to pay extra for is the Crazy Golf (maybe it’s just me but it strikes me as strange paying for Crazy Golf but not the Pirate Ship ride).

In short, the kids had a great time and would love to visit again.

ADULT PERSPECTIVE:

As it bills itself as a 5 star site we naturally expected superb facilities, friendly staff and a hassle free stay.

Upon arrival the staff towed our caravan to our pitch (Falcons View) which was grass. This was something of a surprise as when I booked back in February I specified and was told we would have hard standing. To add to the surprise we were also told that due to the recent heavy rain (and as we were not on a hard standing) we could not park our car on site (to avoid to avoid the grass from being churned up). We had to park in the “Day Visitors Car Park” a good ten minute walk away. This may not sound too bad but is a real pain in the backside, as with many campers a lot of items get stored in the car. It also makes it a hassle when trying to pack the car to go for a day out at the beach etc. Also worth noting that the Day Car Park has no gates to prevent unauthorised access and no CCTV or any form of security (as confirmed by Reception when I checked with them).

When I queried this I was told, “that’s your pitch, if you have any questions ask reception”. My wife tried to do exactly that, calling reception before we attempted to set up the awning etc. The call was terminated (not by us) shortly after my wife explained the situation without any resolve to the issue. So we went down to reception, who whilst polite were not overly helpful. They advised there was nothing on our booking to say we’d specified hard standing and that there were no spare hard standing pitches to move us to. We were told there had obviously been a “misunderstanding” and to fill in a customer comment form to help future customers (no help to us!).

Whilst I understand Woodlands can’t control the weather I do feel there is much more they could do to minimise the weathers impact. I’ve never been to a site before where even if you have hard standing the hard standing is “remote”, ie there is a small tarmac drive into the start of the field then plain grass with the odd pad of further tarmac here and there (hard standings). My previous experiences of hard standing are that there is tarmac/made up road of gravel all the way to and including your pitch. This allows cars etc to be parked on pitch whatever the weather without damaging the grass. These are not in my opinion 5 star facilities.

If you ignore the no parking on site orders, or get caught taking too long to load/unload after your day at the beach you may just be lucky enough to experience Woodlands customer friendly approach and be threatened with the wheel clamp (as we were) Fear not though, it did appear that if you could come up with a suitably convincing sob story Woodlands would issue you with an exemption sticker allowing you to park on site as normal.

For four days we came and went, spending rainy days on site and sunny days going out and about to beaches (Bigbury-on-Sea has a great dog friendly beach if you’re looking for one, about 35 mins away in the car). On day four my wife returned the car to the day car park after we came home from the beach and unloaded. Now, the car and the caravan both have yellow tags on them, issued when you book in and we were told these must stay on the vehicles . The “Gentleman” on the gate refused to let my wife back into the site unless she returned to the car to get and show the yellow tag. It appears Woodlands want things all ways, the tag must stay on your car but you must also have it on you to show at the gate.

All these little things add up to make a bad experience. Also remember you’re only parking off site in the first place due to Woodlands facilities being unable to cope with the English weather.

The toilet/shower facilities are good but I wouldn’t class them as exceptional or 5 star. They are no better or worse than facilities at comparable sites. I had difficulty one day seeing to wash up in the washing up room. It was a typical British summers day, black as night outside. Unfortunately you can’t simply turn the lights on when this happens, was told by the Warden that the lights are on a preset timer and only come on at certain times.

There is a shop on site which we found well stocked and prices not unreasonable (by camp site shop standards). The man who runs it was very helpful, probably the friendliest member of staff we met during our stay.

We also used the on site Pizza shop one evening and found this to be very good.

We had a dog with us and frankly were not that impressed with the dog facilities. There is a dog walking field, but it is very small. If you have a large dog that requires a lot of exercise you’re not going to get it on site. We asked Reception if there was anywhere nearby to walk the dog (local parks etc) but they were unable to suggest anywhere close. There is a wood (Millennium Wood?) but again dogs are not welcome due to nesting ground birds.

Most nights noise could be heard until after midnight with no obvious signs of wardens doing the rounds to quiet things down.

Can’t speak for other mobile networks, but if you’re on O2 don’t expect to be using your phone much on this site (or the immediate area), the coverage is abysmal. You could always stump up the £19 a week for wifi .

Although the kids loved it we are unlikely to visit the campsite again, nor could I hand on heart recommend it to anyone else

Amazing campsite, friendly greeting from wardens who escort you to the pitch and help if required. Pitches are large, we had a beautiful view of Torbay. The toilet block had a lot of family shower rooms and facilities were cleaned regularly. There is a freezer to use for ice packs.

The actual theme park was lovely, we have 2 boys aged 7 & 8 who had an amazing time with all the rides and play areas. We were extremely lucky with the weather but even if it was to rain there is plenty of indoor areas.

A major bonus point for us were the kennel facilities available on a first come basis, but as there are about 15 we were able to use them everyday.

Dartmouth is about 10 mins away where there is a Lidl and Sainsbury, we didn't eat out but there are numerous pubs nearby. There are cafes on the park and a v well stocked general store on site. Overall this is a beautiful campsite which had a lovely atmosphere, amazing facilities providing brilliant value for money. We would definitely like to return.

We stayed at this site after recommendation from UKCampsite members. And I cant thank them enough, what a brilliant place!

From first arriving we were greeted by friendly and helpful staff and throughout our stay we couldn't fault them.

Due to staying Thursday-Tuesday we were pitched on the Well Park area. It has a bit of a slope but nothing we couldn't cope with. Pitches were lovely and large for our tent and awning.

During the evening we had to park the car at the car park and not by our tent due to the groundsman not wanting tracks left. But after a couple of lovely days we were allowed to park back there.

The facilities were spotless and plenty of them. No matter what time we went to the shower blocks we didn't have to wait. The single toilet/shower rooms were also so handy when showering small children.

My 6 year old loved the games room and it had everything to keep her entertained for hours during the evening.

The park. Well what a place. We all loved it, it had something for everyone no matter what their age. Our group had children with an age rage of 6-17 and they were all kept happy. Especially the biggest kids of all aged 36 and 35

I would say that the walk could be a struggle for some as the park is quite hilly. But there are plenty of benches scattered around to have a rest on.

The only thing I can fault the park on is that unless you book Saturday-Saturday (I think its those days) you can only be pitched in well park and not the other areas which were flat and in little cul de sacs. They obviously have their reasons for this but it is a shame as due to work commitments that option is unavailable for us.

Well to sum it up if your looking for a clean, friendly site that has everything you need to keep a family entertained then this place is for you. We loved it and are already booked again for next year :-D

We stayed at Woodlands for 3 nights during the June half term and had an amazing time!

When we arrived the abundant staff were extremely helpful, polite and friendly. It wasn't that busy so we had a choice of pitches.

There was lots of space around our caravan and we were on hardstanding. However the ground is quite undulating and it was hard to level the caravan. Water was close by and the toilet block was a short walk.

The shower block was large and clean with a games room above.

In some of the bathrooms they actually have a bath which is fantastic as our daughter needs a special bath oil and we find it hard when she can only shower to keep on top of her eczma so we were very impressed with this. The only problem was there was no shower head and the bath water was payable - showers are free.

For the price of the entrance we had 2 full days and 2 1/2 days in Woodlands Adventure park which is amazing. The kids had a brilliant time, there is something for everything and is such great value to have admittance included.

We popped into Dartmouth one evening for lovely fish and chips and an ice cream. It is a beautiful town, we will be back to explore more!

Just returned from 1 week stay at woodlands and it definitely gets the thumbs up from us.

Whilst we were there we had the worst weather imaginable, with torrential rain and storm force winds and can honestly say if the park did not have the facilities it has we wouldn't have stayed the week.

The park has rides and attractions for all weathers- outdoor rides such as toboggan run and avalanche slides, and a massive indoor area with slides and ball pits plus a few rides as well.

We also liked the lay out of the touring area and the way that the pitches are grouped into cul de sacs with 8 pitches in each one. In the evenings all the children played together outside ( when it wasn't raining) and the atmosphere was good and friendly.

The site also has a games room with pool tables and air hockey. Lots of showers and family wash rooms.

The general area- Dartmouth is the nearest town which is about 4. 5 miles away. Great place to visit. It has a Sainsburys and a Lidl just outside the town right by the park and ride. We also visited Totnes and Kingsbridge which are both lovely places too.

This is a great park for families and children as the adjacent 'theme park' offers a lovely escape for them although more suited to younger children.

During our visit, the weather was VERY wet and my complaint around this would be that during times like this, the toilet blocks need more attention. The floors are often very wet, the toilets themselves wet and slippy and the blocks themselves very cold as the doors are propped open all the time which isnt pleasant when you are going for a shower. It may be a summer month but it was freezing. The water in the showers isnt very warm and I know they had a part replaced during our visit for the water system but heating the block and closing the door would have helped.

The site itself if very hilly so if you are in need of a level or all weather pitch, make sure you specify this clearly, we thought we had but ended up on a sloping grass pitch and had to move as we simply couldn't level our motorhome enough to be comfortable.

The site facilities such as shop and eateries are a great bonus as most things are a drive away. There is a bus stop outside the park but we didn't use the bus, we drove to the park and ride which was great and just £5 to park and ride for the motorhome and all passengers return.

We have recently returned from a 10 night stay at this site and it really does have a lot going for it.

We were told when we made the booking that we would be in the Well Park area as the main park was all booked up by rallies at the weekend. However we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived to be given a pitch in the Falcons View area on a lovely little corner plot.

The warden who showed us to our pitch was fantastic, and as we'd ended up on a hook up pitch offered to lend us a cable so that we could plug in (although a quick call of email from the site prior to arrival to inform us of the hook up pitch would have been welcome as we didn't have any hook up equipment with us at all and ended up having to rush out to a camping shop to cobble together an emergency kit)

The terrace we were on had 8 all weather pitches - with loads of room left in the middle for the kids to play. For most of our stay there was a maximum of four tents on our area, but it was full on Friday and Saturday night and still didn't feel crowded.

The ground was quite soft so when the park was busy over the weekend we were asked to park our car in the theme park car park to ry and keep traffic off the grass by the pitches. Not a major issue although I was a little worried in case anything happened to the car. I know it's parked at our own risk, but the risk of parking next to our tent is not quite the same risk as parking in a car park 10 minutes walk away. Also having parked the car outside we then had to queue up at the ticket booth to get back in which seemed a bit odd and a bit annoying when all the kids wanted to do was get down the park.

The theme park is fantastic. The indoor play areas are fantastic and were made well use of on the rainy days (which was quite a lot of them!) And the toboggan run is hilarious! So much to do so even though we paid more to stay, overall we probably spent less as we made such good use of the park. It was also nice to be able to go down and use all the outdoor play areas in the evening after the park was closed.

The toilets and showers were ok - not the best we've stayed at but clean and plenty of hot water, and the family rooms were nice to use with the little ones. However I do agree with the previous reviewer about the main block being cold and draughty due to the door being propped open all the time.

The games room was ok and we had a few games of air hockey and the launderette was very reasonable at £2. 50 per wash.

The surrounding area is beautiful. Dartmouth especially is very pretty and Burgh Island at Bigbury is a lovely beach.

My big gripe with the site was the noise level at the weekend. The site does accept groups and unfortunately at the weekend a large group of teenagers arrive. Luckily they weren't on our pitch, but they all congregated around the facilities block until approx 1am and the girls in particular seemed to think it was great entertainment to shout and scream at the top of their voices.

Despite several campers going down to complain to the wardens nothing was done to ask them to quieten down. I just felt very sorry for the pitches that were closer to them than we were and felt the wardens should have intervened. Luckily on Saturday night the sound of the thunderous rain on the tent was loud enough to drown them out and thankfully they all left on Sunday.

On the whole despite the niggles I would definitely go back, but I would only do a shorter stay - Sunday to Friday as I didn't like the noise and lack of action by the wardens at the weekend, and I would not want to stay in high season when the park was full.

We stayed at this site as part of a rally. We enjoyed the off peak discounted mid week rate of £9 per night for 2 adults( no children allowed at this price). For this we received a generous size pitch on a terrace with 4 others each with electric. Each pitch was hardstanding with loose gravel. To counter the gravel each pitch came supplied with a groundsheet and bricks to hold it down. Some of the other pitches are on grass in larger fields.

A large amenity block with separate ladies and gents facilities and a number of unisex/family rooms. Above the toilets and lauderette facilities is a very large games room with table tennis and pool etc.

There are other smaller amenity blocks in the outer fields when they are in use. There is a shop and take away. Woodlands Grove also has a family theme park suitable for all ages set within the wooded hills.

There are numerous rides and slides and climbing activities and a large animal section, enough to keep you busy for at least 2 days. There is also an excellent falconry centre with 2 displays each day. All this is included in your pitch fee. A similar pitch for 2 adults and 2 children would cost approx £48 per night at peak times. Although this sounds expensive when you take into account the use of the theme park it is good value for money. It must have been, as they had 450 units coming for the bank holiday weekend.

This a hilly site and not suitable for people with severe mobility issues, although I am sure the site would try and pitch you close to the amenities if you asked when you book. The very helpful wardens show you to your pitch and explain where everything is.

Buses run from outside the site to both Dartmouth and Totnes, which are 4 miles away in opposite directions. Dartmouth has good park and ride facilities and a large supermarket. There are numerous river and steam train trips and some of the best fish and chips we have ever had

Please note I have rated this on the campsite only - not the theme park.

We stayed here for the second time in 2 years. We went especially for the children to access the theme park. We stayed for three nights to be able to spend two days in the theme park - nearly £100. I would not stay on this site longer and use as a base as it would just be too expensive for a family to do.

Whilst there the weather was freezing and they could not cope with the demand for electricity therefore the supply kept tripping and no-one could even boil an electric kettle - it was miserable. No lights for the toilets either.

There are plenty of clean showers and toilets but the site has no atmosphere at all. It is really just a base to go into the theme park. I do not know how they got all of their awards, probably years ago. No play area, no swimming pool or entertainment on site that you would expect for the money they charge. Really you pay over the odds for the freedom of accessing the theme park.

Silly price structure, have to pay extra for an awning on a campervan it was cheaper for us to take our campervan but put a tent up to stay in - mad! A camper van with an awning attached actually takes up less space than a car and a tent! But because they are so expensive we had to stay the cheapest way possible.

There are loads of site rules to abide by which is offputting - you are supposed to be there to relax!

They do have deals but these are for adults only who they know will not want to go into the children's theme park!

Kids love it though so no doubt we will return.

This is not the type of campsite I would normally stay in. It is everything that I don't like in a campsite. And here we are with the campsite that has made me re-think my ideals!

I prefer open spaces, few units, small intimate sites with space and quietness in abundance. Woodlands had all that, but mainly because we attended here well off season. This is a campsite that attracts families and because we visited during school term it was very, very quiet. We were able to take advantage of their fabulous weekday deal. Sunday-Friday for £40. The Friday to Sunday cost £50!

The weekdays we stayed were blissfully quiet and there was tons of space. The wardens spaced out what units there were. The park is divided into sections, each able to take 8 units. Each section had no more than 4 units put in so it was peaceful but not deserted. The weekend was busier with families turning up to use the park on the Saturday. People arrived on Friday afternoon onward and mostly packed up and away on the Sunday morning. Again, there were no more than 4 units to a section so apart from a little increased noise from children playing there was no major disruption.

The toilet block was fabulous and spacious. Plenty of toilets and showers in this quiet time. I quickly discovered that the family shower-rooms were warmer and the showers stayed on (instead of having to push the wee button every 30 seconds!) so I used them on the weekdays. There was a large and reasonably priced laundry. Freezers were in the wash-up area for ice blocks and the dishwashing was spacious and warm. The games room had a television area and various arcades. It was very warm up there and were were told that if we had any problems with our tent then we could take our sleeping bags there to stay the night. Very reassuring and a great idea.

The pitches were very fine grit/gravel over a solid flat base. It was easy enough to peg into and every pitch has a 'carpet' to soften underfoot through the tent. It worked fairly well but the grit got everywhere! and the tent required brushing out every day. They were flat and spacious though and better than the gravel that some places insist on using!

The staff we came across were largely students, but they were all very friendly and seemed genuinely happy to help us. It was the main reason that we ended up there and stayed so long - the original site we landed at were very indifferent and expensive and the lovely way we were spoken to on the phone when we first enquired was fantastic and was the one thing that made us decide to give it a try even though it is not our kind of site.

We only visited the theme park once. It was very much geared for children - I would say 4 - 14 age.

The location of the site was brilliant for exploring the area and Dartmouth is gorgeous. In the local area we loved the pub called The George in Blackawton - very friendly locals. There was a lovely riverside pub called The Maltsters Arms in Tuckenhay.
