We were looking for a site close to Cardiff as we had tickets for a couple of the Olympic football games.
We ended up at Acorn in Llantwit Major which had a local train station which was around a 20 min walk from the site and made getting into Cardiff very easy.
We had a pitch surrounded by hedges which offered some welcome shade as we fortunate to be camping in one of the few sunny weeks of the year.
The site was tidy and the owners welcoming. The facilities were clean and tidy and a good size. There was a shop on site.
As we were only there for a couple of days we did not see much of the local area but we had a good time and it's somewhere we would return to for a more relaxing stay.

Difficult to find site as town has little lanes, many speed bumps, a one way street, and the left turn you should take with a car (not a caravan possibly) has not even got the street name on it, so ended up going the long way round. Then approach is through a caravan park, then through a farm (which also had a building site for wooden lodges gong on when we arrived), so was very offputting. Loads of very bug pot holes in this area too.
Site fine though. Although only 4 shower/sink cubicles per sex meant queuing when site busy. Also only 3 washing up sinks in total, so had to queue for that too! Free showers though, and hairdryers. Shower block furthest from tents, and closest to statics - made no sense!
Tents also closest to very noisy children's play area. Got very irritating. However, owner/manager sent them off each night around 9:30 ish, so just screaming kids in tents after that!
Pitch slightly sloping, with old tree stumps which I could feel through the ground sheet - painful when I knelt on one! Also overhanging tree meant rain drips after it had stopped raining, and bird poo all over tent! Had bushes around our large tent, so more private than all other pitches.
Overall, ok for a family holiday I guess. But if you want a quiet holiday, find somewhere else.

The site is great and easy to find if you follow the signage.
I have been to this site many times and have always had a great welcome.
Its nice to go to a camp shop that sells what you need and does NOT have sky hi prices
It is always kept very clean and is a credit to the management.
The pitch was muddy but after days of rain what can you expect we are campers and a bit of mud is good for you we enjoy a good fammily spirt promoted by the site
The town and area are great the people friendly
So if you want a family friendly site this is the one, some have a pub and separate the family
So keep up the good work acorn

This is a nice site it has a very nice feel that you don’t get on a lot of sites
The signage to find the site was good so don’t understand why so many posts have found it trouble
Lots of families here so great for us with our two young kids
Lots of things to see within 30 mins drive
We were greeted by the site owner and this was a nice start to our stay
Great pitch hard standing sort off our caravan was on grass and a small patch of stones for the porch awning not worth the extra money in my opinion
Toilets were clean and sufficient the showers were good but the other campers don’t seem to mop after them so grass on the floor
Lots of food and drinks in the shop on site
We would return to this site
My only bad point is that as you look around the site you can see that over time this site has now started to show signs of lack of reinvestment in a general way
Overall a very nice place to spend time in your caravan or tent

Just got back from a 3 night stay at Acorn. Finding your way through the village of Llantwit Major before you get to the site is a challenge all on its own. I lost count of the number of speed humps you need to navigate and signs for the site were few and far between. Eventually when you arrive you drive in through a gate only to be met by several large bins and a view of the children's play area to your left.
The play area has a rubber tiled surface which has seen better days, the tiles look uneven and has weeds growing between them.
The reception is easily found if a little scruffy but the staff are very friendly. They escort you to your pitch and answer any questions that you have. The road to our pitch was extremely muddy and looked nothing like the photos on the web site. No gravel as you might expect just mud!
As the road was on an incline walking to the toilets at night was challenge to see if you could stay on your feet, my wife didn't! No lights anywhere on the site and a slippy surface is far from ideal.
The toilets are dated and its best if you don't look up at the skylights as they haven't been cleaned in a decade.
Overall the site looks like someone once cared but now its in need of a make over and doesn't look anything like the photos on the web site. One word describes the site perfectly 'rundown' and yes you've guessed it I wont be going back!

My wife and I spent 4 nights at Acorn. Being first timer campers it is new to us. Site was excellent, facilities were good. Toilet and shower block very clean and pleasant to use.
Owners very friendly and helpful. We had a taste of 3 sunny days, 1 wet day. And a very windy day when we went home which we mastered very well when taking tent down without getting blown away.
Will definitely be going back there again. Richard and Jane from Swindon Wiltshire.

Stayed here in May for an extended family weekend camping trip. Our party was large, 5 touring caravans and a large tent but the owners managed to accommodate us all at short notice and even pitched us all together, which was exactly what we wanted. It had been very wet prior to our arrival and the ground was very soft. Rightly so, the owner gave us all strict instructions to keep driving wheels to the semi hard-standing track to avoid chewing up the pitches.
Site is well laid out and facilities are good, the children were entertained enough from the small park area and trampoline. The shop is well stocked and reasonably priced. Access is as previous people have reported, a little challenging with larger units and you need to follow the owners directions to the letter to avoid any caravan towing U-Turn embarrassments!
Site rules are strict, we did get told off once very politely by the owners for making too much noise after 10:30 forgetting that an awning doesn't shield the noise of a dozen people playing cards! (sorry again!)
Acorn Campsite is a great base for exploring the local area which is really beautiful.
Tariff is fair and we would recommend this site to families and will possibly return ourselves.

We had a delightful stay here at acorn it is one of the best sites for location, facilities and friendliness. So much so we are returning for the august bank holiday.
The site has been booked up for weeks for the b/h but the good news is. We booked 2 plots and now only need one so if at the last minute you have a tent and want hook up contact the site asap and you may get lucky.
Just read the other reviews and you will see this an ace of a site

The site could be better signposted that's for sure. Having found it, we found the staff helpful and friendly.
Minor criticisms are that those in campervans and caravans who most likely have their own loo, were nearest the toilet block. Those in tents who most likely don't have their own loo, the furthest from it.
The nearest tap was in the next field, and lastly, a full 25 metre hook up lead was required. Mine would not reach, fortunately the site owners had extensions available for a returnable deposit.
Otherwise a good site with clean spacious toilet block, well maintained, sizeable pitches and friendly staff.

A long weekend visiting relatives and being the nearest campsite found that this was a little gem.
Pros: Really helpful and friendly. Pitches generous and totally flat - well kept. Small shop and snacks available. Play area for kids (Although a little worn). Clean toilet and showers facilities, with free hairdryers. Plenty of hot water. Multiple washing up areas. All very clean.
Cons: Could do with a little clearer signs to follow through the housing estate, caravan parks and farm to get there. No other negatives as we all agreed it was a lovely site and we'd definitely go again.
