We've just got back from a weeks holiday at Mere Farm and I have mixed emotions about it although the family enjoyed it.
We arrived on a monday and after reading reviews about it we was unsure what to expect. We got there about 1 ish and turned into the site and was met by some chickens and a sign to ring bell which we did but no answer so eventually found 'Rob' who was nice and friendly who told us where to pitch and informed us about the strict rules on recycling which is a good thing although we do it anyway.
We started to pitch and waited for my daughter and her friend who are 13 and staying as we had my stepson with us who is 11. Our pitch was ok but very stony literately bent double lots of pegs eventual getting done about 3 then went for a pint to the local pub passing an emu farm, the girls turned up later after being dropped off by her mum.
We got sorted, had tea and bought a camp fire from Rob who brought it round in a tractor for us for a fiver with lots of chopped up firewood for us we decided to have showers first as it was a hot day, my wife hated the showers as only a little trickle, mens was ok and 2 mins for 20p but the facilities wasn't very good and never hot water to wash up as pilot light kept blowing out.
In morning had breakfast in the 'chuckwagon' which was good and by the time the girls had got ready it was 11am and off to Bempton Cliffs, back at 5 the kids went off and we cooked tea and had another fire but got washed out by the weather, kids came back at 10 after finding friends.
We did this most days, having breakfast then going off some where, either Edencamp,Scarborough, Filey or Bridlington, coming back and the kids wandering off to new friends they made.
The up side to this camp was it was friendly people, kids playing with others, the animals, George wandering and pinching slippers which was funny but got a little annoying, downside was the facilities and rocky pitch I would come again but not for a week just week end and not with 2 13 year old girls who spent hours putting on make up and hopefully a bigger unit.
Rob could do with upgrading the toilet block and getting some help as he was everywhere.

Just returned from this campsite. Had a lovely weekend, 3 nights. Easy access to all the major resorts in the area. Loved the campfire thing. Takes you back to 'proper camping' and I'm sure is something our grandchildren will remember. The owner is a very nice chap, very helpful and informative. Loos need updating but I would keep them in the silos as that's a novel idea. Didnt have to wait to use them all weekend even though the campsite is huge and was quite busy. Will be returning.

Just returned from a couple of nights at Mere farm. What a great time we had! Although we rang and booked we're not sure if anything had been written down but we paid the paltry sum of 20 pounds and were told to go pick our spot in the tent field. While this was being sorted out the owners dog (George) managed to jump in our car and inspect it for anything interesting. Having read all the reviews we thought we knew what to expect but things are always different than imagined. Pop Larkins junkyard with real charm.
Robert the owner will give you a short speech/lecture about re-cycling your rubbish with the'just do it, it's not rocket science' tag that will only get your back up if you don't like the 'my house my rules' attitude he projects. He's right though; it does make a difference and he makes it very easy with re-cycling bins all over the site.
We discovered the joy of colour-changing turkeys, chickens and guinea-fowl, rabbits, a mad aviary with budgies and chicks squabbling over tit-bits and an escaped rabbit in a junk pile that was gaining celebrity every hour. Also the sight and sound of kids actually running round, making friends and chasing George the dog (who pinches shoes, balls teddys etc) took us back to our own childhoods before the Nanny State.
Robert will rent you a fireplace and wood for the night which may be an elaborate fire basket or an old steel car wheel with legs welded on for £5 a go. If you're a pyromaniac it may pay to take a couple of bags of your own to keep it going into the night. He drives round the site at around 6 dropping them off and collecting the money but keep an eye out as he missed a few.
The long and the short of is that if Mere Farm is for you you'll know as soon as you arrive. If you like showers that work all the time and super-organised - clubhouse sites this is not for you. If you want an old-fashioned campsite run by a great bloke who works so hard that he hasn't got the time to say sorry it isn't perfect, then it is.
Robert opens The Chuck Wagon on the weekends cooking really good breakfast rolls and coffee etc. Bit of a queue but worth it and again, he's the only cook. We were on a grind it out commercial site for a night a couple of weeks ago with a roach-coach with longer queues for greasy muck so a no-brainer really.
We have to mention local services so here goes. The Post Office cum shop is truly awful. We arrived starving so went in as the sign promised hot pies etc. Got a cold pastie and a really grotty ham roll for a small fortune and paid (ask me why and I couldn't honestly tell you) 50p for two tiny tomatoes! All served with a grimace. Wells the butchers however was a result. Very reasonably priced, beautiful meat and a lovely friendly butcher to boot. Don't buy a cake or veg in the shop until you've been in the butchers is our best advice as he does it all including local bottled beers. We didn't try the pub as the site was too much fun. The chipper at Hunmanby was great and again very friendly.
Long may Mere Farm prosper. We'll be going back as soon as possible. Happy camping!

We stayed for a single night in the first week of August, en-route home from visiting family.
As you arrive up a dusty track and slightly dilapidated farm buildings, you may think that you’ve taken a wrong turn, but make your way further up the track to the left and you’ll find the “Chuck Wagon” and quite possibly, the proprietor sitting outside. We had booked in advance to ensure our place but that didn’t seem to faze Robert who just took our details and charged us a tent rate for our campervan and 2 + 3 (£14.50) before he launched into his desperate attempt to ensure that you agree to do your best to save the world with him by separating and recycling your waste (something that we do anyway), he gave clear guidance about where to find all the facilities and what he expected of you in relation to one or two issues that he’s obviously had in the past with others, and I dare say that if you’d had a rough journey and were tired, you could interpret his manner as being a little dictatorial; but it’s his site so it’s his rules that apply.
The site has a large field open for tents and tourers, with two smaller areas for those who desire an EHU. We were left to pick a spot that suited us and set up camp, and there’s enough space to allow you ample room and a good amount of space between your plots, on pretty flat ground; it was clear why Robert hadn’t worried about our booking, because you could fit a lot of tents and small campers in this field.
The menagerie of animals described by others in previous reviews are still there, and are an entertainment for the kids, even if, or perhaps because one of the turkeys decided that my jeans looked mighty tasty!
The Gents facilities are “basic”; the toilets were sufficiently clean to use because you have to, but did not make for an experience that I’d rush to repeat. The one shower that you have in the Gents is only separated from the toilets by a single curtain and stepping out to dry & change means that no-one else can use one of the two sinks in the facilities; I avoided a shower on the basis that the chance of me being any cleaner after the shower than when I got in were not good. A fellow camper who I was chatting to and who was staying a week was not impressed at the prospect of the limited facilities for more than a night’s stay.
The ladies facilities were, I’m informed, a little better organised and cleaner and one of my sons’ certainly preferred Mum taking him to the loo than Dad’s offer to do so; I could make some comment about the standards of women versus men, but I don’t really think that was the cause of the disparity given some of the comments by Robert when we first arrived.
We didn’t eat at the Chuck Wagon, but from what I saw, the food in the evening looked good and the aroma was excellent.
The site allows campfires and Robert drives around with fire baskets for you if you want one and has wood for sale for these and I’m sure that this is where he makes a little back that keeps his site fees down. I’m a fan of sites that allow fires but have to say that at others I’ve stayed at there’s always been some form of fire fighting equipment set out, even if only a couple of beaters and a barrel of rain water; there were none here.
Being totally honest, this site would be pretty good if the toilets / showers were a bit better organised AND cleaned, not just quickly mopped with a bucket of brown water or bleached once a day; and for the obviously far higher number of pitches than the claimed 30, (I’d say more like 30 EHU plots and 100 tents) you need more than one shower for all the men. In some ways I think that Robert’s just trying to do too much (he seems to be everywhere, doing everything, all day!) and the sorriest sign of this was the notice in the loos on one of the taps “No hot water until I buy a new tap, please use other sink”.
If you’ve read the reviews on here, you should know what you’re booking and on that basis, you’ll certainly enjoy your stay (even if only for one night), the location is nice, the site is relatively sheltered, it's a bit different and Robert is certainly one of life's crusaders (all power to him); it’s very reasonably priced and I hope that I've been fair in my comments and it helps you make up your mind.

We arrived at this site & was originally impressed thought it looked ok, the site was really nice. We then went to use the facilities which were not very clean. On a site so large there was only 2 showers one each for men & women, these ran very slowly & the water trickled out they also went from scalding hot to very cold no in between, they also cost at least £1.20 & you still never got a decent shower. There was also a charge on wood for the fires as well as being charged to HIRE the fire pits nightly, these were collected every morning & dished out again at night. No play area is available & any open space for ball games was quickly filled up with campers.
The surrounding area was lovely & we had some really great days out in Brid & Scarborough, we also visited Primose Valley Haven site for the day which was good. Weather could have been a lot better but hey that's what you get camping.

Just got back from visiting Bobbybees, complete with the wandering turkeys and the footballing dog! who will eat the ball given half the chance.
Facilities are quite basic, 1 sink for washing up which drains straight onto the ground, toilets are basic but Robert keeps them clean.
Didn't give the shower a go but it looked alright, pressure is apparently low 'blame Yorkshire water' states the owner once he has told you about recycling and the rules of the site, of which there are plenty.
Our visit was affected by a couple of large single sex groups whose noise travelled across the tent field. They left the next day and I'm sure they would have been dealt with if they hadn't.
The Chuck Wagon served breakfast baps and had a bar going in the evening.
The ground is quite hard and stony so be prepared, this is after all the chalk hills of the Yorkshire Wolds.
If you want basic with plenty of space on the tent field and a site that allows fire pits which really gave the evening a great atmosphere then this is the place for you. If you are in a van then be prepared to be quite close to your neighbour. At least on the tent field you can choose your neighbour and if you don't like them then move! That's according to the owner anyway.

Had an absolutely lovely time on this campsite. Stopped for two nights and were made to feel very welcome by the owner who was more than happy to stop and have a chat and share a glass of wine with us. First campsite we've been on where have been allowed camp fires and it really made our last night special.
The toilet facilities are clean but basic, only one shower but there are 4 other toilets each with a wash basin and miror. There's a socket for those who like their home comforts like a hair dryer or straighteners (like one of our company does!).
There are animals galore from guinea pigs to the turkeys Frank and Furter. George the owners dog enjoys visiting amongst the campers and spent a lot of his time playing football with us. We also had a friend join us for breakfast, a chicken who was rather fond of bacon!
There are 3 swings on one of the larger trees for the children, or big kids like us, and a mini stone henge errected in one of the camping fields.
Visited into brid one morning for a walk along the sea front and an ice cream and then on to Bempton cliffs to see the birds and the puffins which are about this time of year. The village of bempton itself is a lovely little place with a very quaint antiques shop. There is a train service that runs from bempton that will take you up to york for the day to save the drive.
The only thing I will say is that it is advisable to have some strong pegs and a hammer as the ground was quite hard due to it been soo dry.
Loved this campsite and will definitely be back!

I was in 2 minds whether or not to visit this site after reading the mixed reviews and I was still a little sceptical when I arrived but once I had been shown where I could pitch my van I was totally smitten and ended up staying 4 days.
There are several fields to choose from and you certainly don't feel like you are on top of other campers. The loos and showers ( mens and ladies) were a little basic and 'odd' but didn't bother me in the slighest. At least the shower was big and £1 lasted for ages. There are several sinks for pot washing and fresh water taps.
I can only describe the site as being a little eccentric as there were an odd assortment of bits of architectural salvage dotted around and also a mini stone circle but that just added to the charm for me. People were friendly and I felt like I was living on a commune. The dog walk around the fields was brilliant and there was plenty of space for people to chill out.
The 'Chuck Wagon' was great for breakfast buns and coffee. The hens and turkeys are fantastic and they visited most mornings - I even had Frank & Mork (turkeys) gobble gobbling along to my radio - you won't get that anywhere else.
The village has a Post Office and a pub and there's a farm shop next to the campsite that sells eggs, potatoes etc.
Yes the facilities could probably benefit from a bit of modernisation but I loved the place so much that I'm going back as the site we've moved to (has a laundry) is too 'proper' and boring and you're all filed away in neat little rows.
If you want clinical and modern then you'll probably not appreciate Bobbybees but if like me you have a bit of free spirit and love hens, turkeys and bunnies then give it a go. Rob the owner is very friendly and helpful. You can buy eggs from the hens and honey from his Bees (it's lovely).
I could happily pitch my van and live there :o)

Just had a good weekend at Mere farm a.K.A bobbybee's, so I thought I'd post a review. It won't be everyones cup of tea, but hopefully I cover that below.
Arrival
On arrival you're greeted by a walkie talkie on the door, push to speak and Robert comes down to great you from where he is on the farm. A very nice bloke, he basically said 'pitch where you like and as long as you recycle your cans and bottle you're fine with me'. After a short drive past free-range chickens and turkeys, and rabbits, budgies and guinea pigs then you're into the caravan field. Beyond that is the camping field.
He only charged us £23 quid for 2 nights for 2 tents, bargain! (not sure that was right but that's what he asked for so I wasn't going to argue).
He also allows camp fires within the portable grates he provides, and sells wood etc for £5 a time (that's where he makes the money!). We got some and he brought the wood and grate straight up on the tractor.
Pitches
We were camping in a tent, and were just okay to pitch where we wanted. Plenty of room and so we spread ourselves out. Others were in small groups around the edge of a field, there was one or two large groups at the far end who were all camped together (10 or so tents in two groups) but they were far enough away not to bother us.
Electric hookup was available in the caravan area, though some were limited to 5 amp by the looks of it. So no kettle! The caravan pitches looked spacious and not too cramped. Again I imagine you pitch where you like.
If you're used to the 'fire regs' imposed on other campsites please be aware that this isn't imposed, so those of a nervous disposition (especially with opens fires everywhere) should probably stay away.
Facilities
The facilities are okay, but a little basic. I didn't risk the one shower in the mens but it didn't look great, you're basically standing in the toilets with only a shower curtain for privacy. The ladies had a lockable separate room with a basin and toilet, so that was better.
There is a lovely breakfast bar in the morning: bacon, sausage, egg, black pudding, fresh coffee (3 different types were advertised but we always had what was brewed). A breakfast cob and coffee was about £3.50, so pricey but not unreasonable.
That was about it on site - apart from the animals roaming round which added to the fun.
The campfires added to the atmosphere and encouraged socailizing, we invited our neighbours to share ours and had a good chat over a beer or two til 1am.
Local Area
We took a trip to the RSPB's Bempton Cliffs to see Puffins and Gannets among other things. I'd recommend the trip.
Bridlington and Filey we also visited, typical seaside reports and again both well worth the visit.
Its a lovely part of the country and plenty of visitor attractions.
In summary
Do Expect:
- large groups of people camping together (though plenty of space meant it wasn't noisy when we were there).
- Fires
- Animals roaming round (including George the dog)
- Decent breakfast
- a great atmosphere on site
- a cheap weekend
- a telling off if you don't recycle everything
Don't Expect:
- Strict health and safety
- Top notch facilities
- Robert to be available all the time to help with queries. You're pretty much left to it.

Have just spent the weekend at Bobbybees with my two young people 16 and 12, it is so unique, very welcoming apart from the turkeys who seem to be very territorial and kept attacking my boy.
I understand that there is a petition to upgrade the facilities and does it need it, only one shower in the ladies for such a large campsite wasn't really enough, but we managed.
The pub down the road is so welcoming the lady behind the bar is fantastic, she remembered our order even where we were going for the day and the food was brilliant.
One thing that I will request next time is not to be next to the kids swings as I can cope with the cockerels at 4am but kids at 7am. Where were their parents asleep in their tents!
