What can you say about this site, not too big, and its absolutely lovely. Richard, the owner, more than helpful and so pleasant. I told him he should charge for the guided tours which he gives all newcomers!. The view from our tent pitch was stunning. If you want to sit out late at night talking and laughing, this site is not for you. We came back from a night out just after 10 and you could hear a pin drop.
Grass is kept immaculate, facilities seem to be in converted outhouses, but kept lovely. Only 1 shower, 2 toilets for ladies, same for men I think, so only slight criticism, maybe could do with another shower. No facilities for children that I could see, although there were a few children on the site. Mainly caravans, but tents very welcome. Lovely area to explore, and nice walks from the site. Quite booked up in advance, but we rang same day and there had been a cancellation. Will be back,

First our likes:
Clean facilities - toilets and showers always clean and stocked. Nice and warm in each too.
Fabulous washing up room - looks newly fitted. It has 3 sinks, a fridge and freezer, washer/dryer (for a charge) and a kettle
Bins are promptly emptied.
Side note: use the postcode for Yoredale Vets, Leyburn and it will take you to the correct road to enter the site.
Disliked: This site has two major failures:
1) The traffic on site. It may be that this site is a tail of two halves. The upper field where the caravans go looked good with a central road to drive onto and a small playing area for kids. However, the bottom field where we were (pitch 13) was a circular area with long grass and nettles in the middle. The tents were pitched around the outside so there was space for your tent and then the cars driving past your tent - not ideal with young children around as most drivers sped past quite fast. There was no safe place for the children to play.
We did think that if we were further down the field (not near the entrance) that it would be better but there is barbed wire and a stream down there.
2) The water temperature of the showers. On arrival we were told 'the shower has plenty of hot water, it is on the hot side but within legal limits'. It was scalding even to adults. We saw an 8 year old crying as she had burnt so there was no chance that our little children (2-6 year olds) could have a shower then entire time.
Other minor faults which could be forgiven without the major faults:
1) The website says small campsite. I would say this is medium campsite. I didn't could but would estimate 20-30 pitches so the number of facilities is not enough. There is two toilets for males and two for females and one shower for males and one for females. This is not enough for the number on site so there was frequent queuing especially for the showers.
2) Noise on site. The site rule is quiet by 11pm. This was not enforced at all. There was one group nearby that eventually turned off their loud music at midnight each night but then kept talking and shouting loud long after that and another group that played loud music until 3-4am. I know this is other people on the sites behaviour but the site manager really should enforce the rule.
Also the website say 'no road noise' you can hear the nearby road all night
3) The cost. We were given a quote for the cost but on arrival as children do one child wanted to swap tents. Fine we thought but the owner told us it would be £6 more even though it was the same number of people using the same facilities (or not as the showers were too hot).
Overall, this site might suit adults who like hot showers and don't mind site noise or cars right by their tents but it is not safe for young children.

We stayed Friday and Saturday night and we were really lucky with the weather which always helps but can honestly say have never been greeted at any campsite by such a friendly welcoming site owner. It was our first visit so the owner showed all of us round the site before taking us to our pitch. The facilities were spotless and remained so the whole stay. The scenery is beautiful and the site is very peaceful too. We enjoyed walking into Leyburn for a few drinks and food and would try Middleham next time. A perfect stay - only thing that would be a slight worry would be the lack of showers as, though we managed fine this time, there weren't many tents and I could imagine there could be quite a wait if more campers. Would definitely recommend this site and we will most certainly return.

Its difficult to imagine how a site could be much better. Apart from the immaculate facilities, beautifully maintained pitches and great location, Richard, was a most helpful and accommodating owner.
When arrived and our Motorhome promptly died as we were booking in. Complete electrical failure, a dead motor stuck in his driveway. Richard's knowledge of motor mechanics did not fix it so out came the tractor and we were towed to our pitch. A bit embarrassing to say the least, but all done in good humour. Green Flag to the rescue and the driver turned out to be a friend of Richard's! All sorted in no time.
We were touring and would loved to have stayed longer.
5 star - Richard - thank you.

My wife and I stayed in our motorhome at this site for six nights from Sunday the 21st June 2015
Following the recommended directions (not the sat nav one) we found the site easily enough and were met by the owner, Richard, who showed us to our site and explained where everything was. Besides ourselves there were approximately 9 other campers (mostly motorhomes) in our field and a further 6 in the other field. Some of the pitches are level with only a few on a slight incline.
Electric hook-up point was close and water a short distance away. The toilets and showers were at the top of the site.
If you enjoy peace and quiet with excellent views then this is ideal – add to that cows in the adjourning fields, occasional views of deer, owls and lapwings then they are the icing on the cake.
There are a number of buses each day to either Ripon, or Richmond and these can be flagged down at the entrance to the site. Further busses may be caught in the market square – some 15 minute walk from the site.
The big question – would we recommend this site? Without doubt and I would be surprised if you went and did not agree with us.

We visited Cracken House Caravan Site at the end of April 2015 for a long weekend away with family and friends (4 Adults, 2 children and 5 Dogs)Let me start by saying the site is stunning. When I arrived the owner had just mowed all the pitches and the place looked like a little piece of heaven on a very sunny day. The owner Richard made us feel at home straight away and was an absolute star. The pitches are more than generous with ample bins, water points and poo bins within easy reach. The toilets and showers where clean and very well maintained. (Not a lot of them but we never needed to queue and lots of hot water). The grounds them selves where spotless and very well kept.
We had staged arrivals and these where delt with with ease by Richard and the whole weekend was made even more relaxing by this kind mans relaxed attitude.
Just to sum up if you want a relaxing break in a beautiful part of Yorkshire this is the ideal place.
WE WILL be going back as soon as we can A1 5 star service what more can I say.

Richard was the perfect host during our stay. The site is excellent on all fronts, spacious pegs, toilet/shower areas spotless, great scenery, a very well looked after site. This was our first time camping and we believe this was a perfect start selecting Cracken House. Hope to visit more regular when in the dales, no need to search for alteratives.

We have tried a few times to book with Craken house and were lucky to get in for a weekend. I can say it was well worth the wait. This site well suited us. It is quiet, very well kept and very clean. It was well worth the site price and no extras for showers, pets or awning. I would like to say how we appreciated the help and guidance from the owners who are fantastic. The pitch sizes are brilliant and the views are outstanding. For us dog owners there are two fields for dogs to go (on lead) which is a plus. All walkers and dog owners out there this is a great base for you, with plenty of walking (people who need to be entertained need not apply) but for those of you who appreciate the good things in life such as the outdoors, history and exercise this is the place. Leyburn can be reached via a mile walk (off road) although not that good for food I would go that little bit further out to Richard III at Middleham, more money but worth it or the cover bridge inn at East Witton less money but good pub grub. All in all a fantastic stay and will be staying again as we didn't get to see Middleham castle, set off but ended up assisting an accident in downpour for two and a half hours and had to come back to site to warm up and change. Just one word if you are struggling to get off the site from wet conditions, don't be the butch man ask owners they will get you off with tractor and leave the grass intact.

I have just returned from this site and was very impressed. Richard, the owner, was very friendly and helpful and I got the impression that nothing would be too much trouble for him. The site has amazing views and the pitches were large and well spread. There were only 2 toilets and 1 shower for each sex but I never had to wait to use them and they were spotlessly clean. A new pot washing facility has just opened and this includes a washing machine and a fridge/freezer is on the way.
It is only a short walk into Leyburn where there are plenty of local amenities. It is also possible to walk from the site. I also felt the site was very good value for money at only £17 per night including EHU.

We have just returned from this superb site in the most stunning area. It really is total escapism, breath taking views, fabulous walking and great food in the local pubs. ( The Cover Bridge Inn, amazing food and plenty of it!) The facilities are clean and well equipped and Richard couldn't have done more to ensure our stay was perfect. Well done to him and his family, we look forward to returning next year.
