We used this campsite for our very first camping weekend. We were not disappointed, it was lovely. Fantastic views, lots of cattle in near-by fields (they weren't noisy in the early hours). I have two young boys who found plenty to do and enjoyed paddling in the stream.
The showers and toilets were very clean. If I had to find fault or make a recommendation it would be that the toilets are far away from the bottom of the field where we stayed. Maybe an extra toilet/shower block for the bottom of the fields?!
As a family we will definitely be going back!

From initial enquiry to the day we left, our experience of Craken House was spot on. Make no mistake; this is a very good site indeed.
Co-owner Richard was there as we arrived and knew which party we were. This being our first visit, we were shown the layout of the site and then the facilities, bins, utility room and the nearest water point. He then checked with us whether or not our cable for electric was long enough as our pitch was not as close to the hook-up as some. He kindly offered to bring an extension down to our pitch. Once on pitch he explained the best position to be sun-facing and left us to it. Marvellous.
Our pitch was at the bottom of the field by the stream. Perfect. Lovely views of Pen Hill and Addlebrough in the distance. The most tranquil of settings and just the ticket to unwind and relax.
The toilets and shower are functional and spotlessly clean. We liked the fact they felt part of the fabric of the farm buildings. Two toilets and one shower per gender. We stayed on a busy weekend and never had to queue. No shortage of hot water.
We didn’t use the Utility room but had a peek inside. Washing up facilities, washing machine, ringer and a freezer were all present.
Many sites would do well to learn from how Craken House is run. This is a site where visitors are welcomed and treated as guests. From website, “Richard and Lynn aim to provide a peaceful and enjoyable experience, whether you wish to explore the local area or simply relax on site. ” That is precisely how we felt.
Our stay was wonderful. Before we left, we booked again for September for a week’s stay. I’m sure it won’t be our last.

This is such a lovely site! One of the prettiest we have stayed on. The facilities are functional as opposed to luxurious but were very clean with constant hot water. If you want total relaxation in a really beautiful setting you can't go wrong and it is lovely to go to a site where you are not given a list of endless rules, the owners are very laid back. We were 2 families, one touring caravan and one tent and were pitched on the lower field which is apparently classed as the family field. IMHO this is the prettiest field with a lovely stream babbling alongside and a central area where a lovely tree provided climbing and den opportunities. Our children regularly got soaked in the stream and did not for one minute miss a playpark on site. Richard the owner was extremely friendly and helpful and we will definitely return as the minute we arrived we relaxed and the area is beautiful - we only scratched the surface - for those with children The Forbidden Corner is great (although some parts scary for younger children ) and there is a lovely playpark at the start of the Shawl in Leyburn with incredible views over the dales.

This site is a gem in the dales. Small (23 pitches) with spectacular views across to Middleham and up the dale. A very friendly welcome from owner who showed us to our pitch and assisted in getting van sited. The toilet and shower facilities are basic but spotlessly clean at all times. Leyburn is about a 15 minute walk away. Can not wait to return.

Beautiful site in a beautiful location.
Richard went out of his way to be helpful, including siting our caravan and levelling it! He also towed us off on the way out as it was muddy.
Facilities are pretty basic as you would expect at a working farm, but totally functional.
Kids had a great time building dens, and playing in the stream.

What a wonderful site. The views are brilliant, the owners very friendly and helpful. Toilets and showers were always very clean even though there was a rally on during our stay (must add they were in a separate field to the rest of us). Plenty of dog walks, close to Leyburn with pubs shops takeaways etc, great for exploring the dales

We've just returned from a five day Easter break at Craken House in our touring caravan. We had seen previous reviews which were 'singing the praises' of this site. We thought that it can't be that good. How wrong we were. What a cracking site, Craken House is!
From the moment we arrived, Richard the owner couldn't do enough to help. By chance, he met us at the gate to the site as we drove up and introduced himself. He took us to our pitch after walking us around the facilities which are centred around the main farm buildings. At our pitch, he offered to help us pitch the van and once sited, he left us to settle in. The views from our pitch were glorious, with sweeping views over the countryside and a small stream running adjacent to where we were sited. There were two ducks on a pond which was part of the stream and of course, George the goose who seemed to be on sentry duty near to the entrance to another field. He's a beauty!
The toilet and shower facilities were accommodated in what seemed to be old farm outbuildings but they were immaculate with oodles of hot water and good water pressure. The water pressure on the site for filling water bottles/aquarolls was equally at a very good pressure.
We came into contact with Richard the owner on a daily basis and his enthusiasm was endless and he also seemed to never stop working. His wife was equally pleasant when we met her. A wonderful partnership to make caravanners and campers stays, comfortable and memorable.
There are no shop facilities on site as the town of Leyburn in less than a mile away with plenty of shops, takeaways, restaurants and pubs. The walk is fairly easy although uphill for the first half mile when going out and easier coming back. However, if you walk back to the site at night, you may need a torch as the main roads once out of Leyburn going towards the site are pitch black.
I would agree with some previous reviews, this is the best site that we have visited and hope to return soon.
A wonderful site and a credit to its owners.

We have just bought our first caravan after a few years with tents and decided to find somewhere close by to test it out.
Just got back from a 2 night stay at this beautiful campsite.
The owner was a very friendly guy and nothing was too much trouble. You can see he takes pride in his farm and site. He keeps it very clean and tidy. There was plenty of space between vans and certainly wasn't over crowded.
Instead of reversing up to the hedge around the edge of field, the owner suggested drive forward as close to hedge as we could, then unhook and move the car. This was to enable our living area to look out over the stunning views.
The wash/toilet facilities were very clean and ample free hot water in the showers.
The site is spread over 3 paddocks. 2 for caravans, motor homes & large tents with electric hook up and 1 for small tents no electric. The is also a quaint little information shed in the tent paddock.
There are some very large fields around the site for kids to let off steam and for dog walking.
The website states 'you will meet George at some point during your stay' We met their resident goose within 5 minutes of arriving, guarding one of the tracks, the kids loved him.
Overall we had a peaceful stay at the site and loved it. We only about 8 miles away. But already planning our next trip to Craken House.

We have visited this site several times over the years and it never disappoints. It has an old fashioned charm that we love.
Marjorie and Glynn have handed over to the youngsters Richard and Lynn seamlessly.
The views across to Middleham Castle and the gallops are stunning, forget the telly and look out of the window.
The site is beautifully kept although most pitches are sloping. This adds some character and ensures that everyone gets to enjoy the view.
The facilities are basic and limited but are spotlessly clean and queues are rare. A separate field is available for games, dog walking etc and footpaths run in all directions from the site.
Leyburn is a bustling, characterful town with all that you will need, particularly good for takeaway Chinese, Indian, Fish and Chips etc. Good pubs with good beer on tap (not much lager I'm pleased to say!)
Overall a great site, which I wouldn't wish to change one bit, a week here feels like a real holiday and work is soon forgotten.

This is a lovely quiet site set in a beautiful area.
We were made very welcome by the owner who takes a great pride in his site.
There is no grey water dump facility for a motor home, the site rules are bucket & chuck it into the hedge-back which works well for me!
The showers & loos are a trifle dated but are kept immaculate with lashings of free hot water.
The market town of Leyburn is within walking distance, with a good selection of shops, market day on Fridays. Fish & chips are cheap & excellent as is the Chinese take away.
All in all a great relaxing site, ideally placed for exploring the joys of Wensleydale.
