I feel I must reply to 'Darlin's' review

We visited for Easter.

This was our 3rd visit in 12months to this fabulous site, this time we stayed 5 nights. The security barrier is excellent, we were greeted by Roy, who showed us to our pitch, which may I add is allocated when you book so if you book early you get a choice of pitch! the toilet / shower blocks are kept in immaculate condition, we never in 5dys had to wait for showers they were all readily available.

There is a small laundrette area, we did not use, but in the entrance was a tourist information area which had leaflets for nearby attractions and also had leaflets for Abbey Farm, which gave all the necessary information needed.

Of course the site has the usually rules, ie. respect the site! my two kids played happily around the site with no problem, you don't have to worry about the rules with well behaved children,

My children had the daily job of collecting the newspaper from the shop, they were always greeted in a welcoming manner from the owners, whom themselves have a few children so I cannot see how children are not welcome on the site!

I cannot stress enough that the Darlins review does not give a true picture of this wonderful site, and considering we stayed at the same time I did not see any of the problems they have pointed out.

We will definitely be visiting this site on a number of occasions before the end of the summer.

I beg to differ with the last review entirely.

We were at the camp site this very weekend [10th April] and found everything to our satisfaction.

The shop was well stocked for any basic necessities.

The family who run the site are most helpful, friendly and welcoming

We appreciated the help given to us getting the caravan onto the pitch.

The security is excellent.

Cleanliness second to none both the site and the toilets. Plenty of hot water for showers and washing up facilities.

Very child friendly.Plenty of space for children to play safely.

Caravans well spaced on level ground.

We have already booked to return soon as did many others we chatted to did.

Unfortunately I cannot be as enthusiastic about this site as previous posters have been.

Abbey farm is however a very picturesque and tidy site. The area is very rural and it is quiet. Part of the site is occupied by large static mobile homes and there seems to be a large number of touring caravans that are occupying hard standings on a seasonal pitch basis.

The road into the site is very narrow and there is an elaborate barrier system with intercom. Security seems adequate and there is a £10 returnable deposit for a keycard to the exit barrier.

The shop/reception is inadequately open from 9 - 10am everyday and despite the site owners claims on their website, the shelves were almost bare and the fridge empty save for a tray of milk cartons. There is an intercom however that you can contact the site owners should you so require. There are no site plans or information sheets readily available so its a bit of a guessing game as to where everything is unless you ask on arrival.

We did not have a choice of pitch and were escorted to where we must set up. I had to perform a tight you turn with a large double axle caravan and follow the man to where we had to pitch. The pitched area was OK but there were better pitches that were empty and I really would have liked the choice. The best pitches seem to be occupied by seasonal pitch hardstandings.

There are 2 toilet blocks that were spotless. However in the block near us, the shower cubicles were locked shut which left one shower for the whole of the site in another block available. This is a big site with potentially a lot of visitors.

Dotted around the site are 'rules' and the consequence of non compliance. I understand the need for rules but the site did have a feel of overbearing and we had our hearts in our mouths just in case the kids put a foot wrong. The signs in the Toilet block, Playroom, Library, Dishwashing/clothes washing area all warn the camper that they may be asked to leave should your children commit a faux pas. Luckily, ours didn't.

There is a good fishing pond but again rules, no ground bait, no keepnets, no barbed hooks. No problem with more rules except we never knew and my son had been fishing most of the day with a keepnet and using groundbait. Presumably we could have been asked to leave had he have been caught?

During the evening the electricity tripped and the site owner attended to it quickly. The fault was in one caravan that had a dodgy appliance but the electricity trip took out 2 rows of caravans approximately 12 in number.

On returning the keycard before we left, my 11 year old had to go back to the shop for the £10 deposit she should have been handed when she gave the keycard back on her first visit. A mistake maybe?

Finally, the exits from each field onto the exit road are murderously narrow and particularly difficult for big outfits. I would imagine that lots of damage occurs.

I liked the setting of the place but felt uncomfortable at Abbey Farm. I didn't feel that the site was suitable for families and that it was better suited to adults only. Children appear to be tolerated rather than welcome and the grass pitches are reasonable rather than very good.

I wouldn't go again.

Just returned from a lovely weekend at this site. Had a bit of trouble finding it but was directed in by the owner after a quick phone call.

The site is very well protected with the security barrier entry and intercom. You pay a returnable £10.00 for a fob to use for this both entering and exiting the site.

We had a fully serviced pitch and although yes we did have electric, water and drainage I feel that these pitches could benefit from hardstandings, although we didn't have hardly any rain the pitches were all muddy.

The shower block was second to none, lovely clean showers and toilets and although there were a fair number of people there, for the time of year, there was always facilities available when you needed them.

There was an indoor recreation area for the kids, but as ours have flown the nest I couldn't really comment, but the kids that were there seemed to be enjoying themselves. This is open until 10.00 which appeared to be just right. There is also a library, but didn't use it. There is also an outside recreation area with swings etc and a mini football field but due to the time of the year, we didn't see these in use.
There is also a dedicated dog walk which people with dogs seemed to adhere too. There is also a fishing pond, which according to my other half, for it's size is great. A small licensed shop in the reception selling basics is also available and you can order newspapers for during your stay.

Out and about, Ormskirk is a mile and half away with plenty of shops and a good street market on Thursdays and Saturdays. There is also an abundance of pubs. The best one we found though, recommended by the site owner was the Briars Hall Hotel. We passed this on the way in, looks very posh but looks can be deceiving, don't get me wrong it is lovely it has functions rooms for weddings etc, a restaurant and also serves bar meals. Well worth a visit and isn't expensive either, well for the bar meals it wasn't. The staff were really friendly. If you eat here a recommendation is the 'Cock and Bull' off the menu, absolutely out of this world!. So nice we went back a second night, couldn't be bothered cooking.

All in all a great little site, only fault was that as the site is open all year, a few more hardstandings for the serviced pitches wouldn't go amiss.

Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this site it's a credit to the owners and hope to return next year.

This is a fantastic site with extremely helpful staff. We were very new to caravanning when we visited the site, especially reserving the van. The man recognised this and stood at the side of the car, giving detailed instructions on how to reserve into our pitch. When we left, the site was wet, so he offered to use his 4x4 to pull our van off the pitch and bring to our car.

The children's playground is very good - it's in a great big leisure field. Good dog work and there are even a couple of pubs selling food in walking distance.

This is our 2nd visit to abbey farm, and although a lot busier this time, because it was bank holiday, it was still a great weekend, we where shown to our pitch which was flat and sheltered, we had had heavy rain for a week and although parts of the site were muddy it was nothing that couldnt be put up with. Our pitch was close to the smaller toilet block, which were always spotless and even though the site was full we never had to queue. On the saturday the adjacent tent was listening to football on a rather loud radio, the warden was extremley quick in making sure this was turned down, we were listening to the radio ourselves but we didnt want to hear somebody elses! the shop was well stocked and the kids enjoyed going for the paper each morning.

We are looking forward to visiting again and have even enquired about siting our van there, I cannot recommend this site enough it is 1st class

We had a lovely time at Abbey Farm and will be going back. Our pitch was great, flat and near the washing up facilities which were covered and clean and with boiling hot water. The walk to shower/toilets was fine, and the facilities were always clean and again lovely hot water for the showers. My 4yr old and 2yr old loved the playground, loads of space to run around and play ball. The owners were helpful and very friendly (good luck with the new baby!). Its a short drive to formby beach, which was really lovely. The site was very quiet at night.

Would highly recommend.

Visited this lovely site for the weekend with friends just before the children go back to school and to try out our new caravan.

We arrived on the friday teatime and once we had been into the reception we where then shown to our pitch by one of the friendly owners who stayed with us and helped us into place with our caravan. (Staff can't do enough for you always there if you need any help or advice).

The site is so peaceful and clean, the children loved the playing field and play park (didn't see much of the little ones only at feeding time they where to busy playing). The two husbands enjoyed the fishing in the site pond, also the dogs enjoyed the lovely dog walks and play field giving them alot of exercise. The showers and toilet facilites where immaculate all the time we where there.

We have stayed at this site a few times and also visited friends here numerous times and can say that this is one of the friendliest, cleanest, peaceful sites we have been to in all the time we have been caravaning.

Overall review: FANTASTIC definitely coming again infact have already booked for bank holiday next year.

Just got back from Abbey Farm. On arrival we rang the intercom to be let in through the super security system. Reception was waiting for us. After being greated by very pleasant, helpful friendly staff, we was asked if we would like to order papers during our stay. We was shown to our serviced pitch by one of the brothers who stayed until they made sure we got our caravan into place. The pitch we was on was very good a bit damp, but with the amount of rain it has done over the weeks it was better than you would of expected it to be. As to last review put on, I hope this puts other readers minds at rest. Last Year when we had been going to stay, they have phoned up to say the pitch is very wet and a bit muddy and was given the choice as to visit or cancel. We went ahead with our stay and was offered by themselves to put the caravan onto the pitch. The toilet blocks was spotless, clean and tidy, which during our stay was always the same. The shop is well stocked with every day items. The kids enjoyed the games room with the pool table and table tennis. The park is great and well equipped. The recreational field is very large ideal for football, rounders, cricket etc. The dog walk is great for my lively 2 year old dog to run around and burn up her energy. The kids also love the pond to catch fish in which keeps them quiet for hours. We have just booked to go back again next year (Thank you John for taking our booking even when you was very busy you still had time to take all the details without rushing us) as the site is peaceful, spacious and with excellent owners who can not do enough for anyone. They walk around the site regually and stop to talk to you if you are about or wave as passing. They check bins regulary. The ladies in the office/shop are always helpful and always have a smile to great you. I always hate leaving this site and can not wait till we go again for our 5th time. We can not thank you enough for having a super site, keep up the hard work. We look forward to see you soon.

We telephoned in the morning to book a tent pitch, I asked is the ground ok and was assured it was fine.

The price for 6 berth tent with electric, 3 adults and 2 children was £23.00 per night

On arrival we called at reception and was shown to our rather small pitch by the owner, I said its muddy, it was literally thick mud. He said 'you will have to make the most of it'! and walked away!If we hadn't already payed I would have left there and then!

During our stay we walked round the site, and as it was mid week there were lots of empty pitches with lush grass!

Also whilst we were there, the toilets were not cleaned or checked, because if they had have been, the sink blocked with tissue and filled up with water would have been dealt with.

On leaving when asked by his wife how was our stay, we said about the state of the pitch, she apologised and said her husband had been in a bad mood for a couple of days due to some rowdy campers. Not our fault and no reason to treat others badly. So unfortunately we will not be returning again to this site.

We have been to this site in the past and found it very peaceful and friendly.Sadly on this occassion it was not so.
