I have been visiting this site with my wife and two girls (10 and 11) for a couple of years and find it the most pleasant, clean and friendly site I have ever visited.

Their are wardens on each field who do a great job of keeping the toilets clean and tidy which is more than can be said for a minority of the visitors.

The dog, and woodland walks are fantastic, as are the numerous children's play parks allocated all around the site. The kids are never bored and love riding their bikes and scooters round the tarmac roads which have a 5mph speed limit.

All the staff from the reception onwards are very friendly and always speak when passing, including the site owner, who is often seen rolling his sleeves up and working with his staff.

The first visit of 2011 was the week before easter where we were given a fabulous pitch on field three, during that week we purchased our new caravan from the Stowford sales team(not planned) who were fantastic. At the time they were Baily and Elddis dealers. We arranged to pick up the new van on the day of the Royal Wedding, not really giving them much time to sort it out but they did. They kept our old van in their storage facility to save me towing it on a 440 mile round trip

On arrival the van was on its pitch as agreed and handed over to us without any problems and they also included three free nights (extended to six) to iron out any potential problems(what a great idea) and were always on hand to offer advice. The accessory shop is very well stocked and you also have a discount card when you purchase you're new van resulting in some great savings. Staff were very knowledgable and couldn't be more helpful.

We have since visited on two other occasions, one been a caravan and camping club rally where we used the rally field. On all our visits the site and staff have not failed to deliver a fantastic holiday

We have toured for many years and stayed on all kinds of sites a lot far more expensive than Stowford, the surrounding area is very appealing and the coast a short hop away.

Stowford is a one stop holiday park which offers everything in one place and is fantastic value for money.

If their is any criticism, its having to wait for you're order at the chip shop, however it gets very busy at tea times so is understandable. Other than that

I would highly recommend Stowford Farm Meadows.

When booking the site (over the phone) the staff were very friendly and even gave us our pitch number so we could see where we would be on the map given on the website.

The only good thing we found about this site ws its location, just a short drive from Illfracombe where there is lots to do and see.

The Victorian rail line at Lynton is a well worth visit!

Now onto the not so good (and there is a lot of this!)

When we arrived, the site did not live up to the expectations we had.

This site is more suited to caravans and not tents. There are roads through out the whole site (It is huge, some 950+ pitches) and was not at all child friendly. We let out son 'play out' once on his scooter but it became apparent very quickly that people were towing caravans at far too high speed.

Please don't under estimate how huge this site is, others have mentioned that it feels smaller due to the fields being smaller but we did not feel this.

The facilities on site (ie, toilets, laundry) were outdated, cold and there were no way near enough to cope with the amount of people on site. The shower cubicles were small and there wasn't enough room to shower and dry myself, let alone take a child with you (there were no 'larger' cubicles for parent/child or even a family shower room)

The toilets were not kept clean and were often out of toilet paper. The floor was constantly soaking wet and covered in grass.

There was very little hot water and having run the hot tap for almost 20 minutes when trying to wash up, it became only luke warm.

We had a meal in the bar one evening. The food was very good and not at all over priced but it took an hour and 5 minutes for the first meal to arrive and then a further 10 minutes for the other meals. The bar staff, although very friendly, were very slow. It took 15 minutes to get a cup of coffee, once ordered!

We didn't use the swimming pool (far to many people in there) or the petorama (£1.75 each!) but did play crazy golf! This was enjoyed by everyone but again, a little overpriced considering it is already there!

We went to one the the entertainment shows put on by the site but again, this was over crowded! The chap was an hour late in arriving, and although this wasn't the fault of the site/staff, there was no communication, we were all just sat waiting and when you have a room full of 50+ children, this isn't a good recipe.

A road runs all though out this area and again, people drove a little too quickly with no patience for small children, or even adults trying to find somewhere else to walk as other have parked on the pavements!

Noise levels weren't too bad, although there were a lot of teenagers hanging around the toilet blocks.

If you want a family/child friendly site that is clean and well run then please don't choose this one!

Value for money? It wasn't an expensive few days (£120.00 for 5 of us over 4 nights)

Location though, excellent!

We will visit Illfracombe again and are already looking, but will chose a much smaller and tent friendly campsite.

The pitches are nice and spacious, adequate space for the kids to run around etc. The facilities are fine, pricing fine. Location is good - quiet and far enough from the road, short enough drive to Woolacombe, Crodye, Ilfracombe etc.

The only thing that hampered our stay was the weather. The site is reasonably high above sea level and therefore takes the brunt of any fronts coming from the Atlantic on the prevailing SW wind. We were battered with rain and wind, which puts us off going again unless the forecast is reasonably good.

This is an absolutely huge site, but is exceptionally well run. It is divided up into smaller fields, so you don't get the feeling of been lost on a huge site.

Each field have wardens who do a very good job of keeping everything running to a high standard. The toilet and shower blocks are large (one per field), clean and with plenty of hot water. There is also a dishwashing area and laundry facilities.

The staff appear to try to space everyone out as much as possible, so we did not have anyone next to us for the four days we stayed there. The roads and side roads to the pitch are tarmac which was great for our little kids to use their bikes and scooters in safety. There are a couple of play areas, and plenty of grass for the kids to play.

We visited the 'petorama' on site which was great, as the kids got to pet and cuddle lots of animals. We also used the pool, run by very friendly accommodating staff. You have to pay extra for entrance to these facilities, but the prices were very low.

There is also an on-site bar, games room, shop and takeaway, but we didn't use them.

We don't normally go for these big sites, but chose this due to the time of year (uncertain weather), so that we could have some wet weather options. As it was, we had superb weather, and spent everyday on the beaches at Wollacombe and Combe Martin. We also visited the nearby Watermouth Castle - quirky but amusing. Great for younger kids, but age 8+ would probably get bored. We would happily go back to his site again.

We returned here having not been for seven years or so. The site has been well described on previous reviews so I will concentrate on the experience.

Pitches are allocated when you make your booking, check in was easy and we were directed to our pitch.

The pitch was very sloped, we have a six berth twin axle and before I could get the caravan level, the rear corner steadies came into contact with the grass and the hitch was at waist height. We wound the front steadies down and had to use a lot of blocks as they were not long enough to reach the ground.

As it was raining and the grass cuttings are not collected, we decided to put the awning up next. We use a porch awning, one of those that resemble a poly tunnel. It was not possible to peg the awning down as the rear of the caravan was so low and the front so high. So I decided to go to reception and ask if we could move to a more level pitch.

At reception I explained the problem and asked if a more level pitch was available. I was told, in no uncertain terms that ‘everyone else on the site had been able to pitch, so why can’t you’. I politely re explained the problem and was told ‘all our pitches will be full this weekend and it will not be possible to swap, and even if it was, all our pitches slope and it is likely that another pitch will be the same or worse than the one you are already on’’. I said that to not use the awning given the weather conditions was not an option and that the pitch was not suitable for my outfit. At this point I said that we would have a refund and drive five hours back home. I was told that they do not give refunds, so I left reception and returned to my family at the pitch.

My wife was somewhat less than impressed by this and she went to reception, saw a different person, who, with no hassle at all, changed us to a nearly flat hard standing pitch just two rows back from where we were, we would have to pay some extra for the hard standing, which we were happy to do. Why two different answers to the same request?

The showers were the next experience; the cubicles are quite small and there is only one hook and only two of the six had a plastic stool to put clothes on. There is no curtain or anything to prevent water from splashing to where you put your clothes, also only three of the six showers worked. When the water came on and the drain gulley got wet, there was a very pungent smell of dirty drain. Overall the shower block gets a daily once over cleaning, but appears not to get a thorough deep clean to prevent smelly drains, etc. The same situation (only three out of six showers working and smelly drains) was to be found in the ladies too.

The site shop was the next port of call; I needed to get some cash from the ATM in there. I was told that it was not working and they were waiting for someone to come and fix it. So we sent to Barnstaple to the cinema and got some cash out there.

While we were out, the site called me on my mobile and asked if we had gone home. There was a caravan on the hard standing pitch we had moved to and they thought it was ours, but also believed we had gone home. Someone else was now on site and the pitch had been reallocated to them. I explained that we were not on site and would be returning within the hour, and that I would not be moving pitch as any mistake in their record about who is on what pitch is not my problem.

The next morning, we went to reception to pay the extra cost for the hard standing, this had to paid in cash as it was under the value for which they will take a card payment. I explained that the ATM in the shop was out of order and that we had been to get cash off site. They said the ATM was ‘often not working’. I also complained about the smell in the showers, that three were not working and that there was now no hot water at the wash basins. There was another person, from a different field and different shower block, making a similar complaint about the facilities there too. All of which the staff seemed to be very familiar with as complaints, but there was no action taken to resolve any of these that we saw.

Overall the approach to customers here is poor, there is a take it or leave it attitude and many failings in the facilities are well known about but go unresolved.

Not an experience we will repeat.

Visited this site after recommendations from other people. It is a huge site-5 fields plus seasonal pitches and a couple of fields just for storage-but it didn't feel big as there were plenty of trees and hedges to separate the fields. Having said that,I don't think I'd like to go at the height of the summer-think it would be too busy for us! There are more grass than hardstanding pitches, but the HS pitch we had was fine; the awning area was grass, but drainage seems to be good. Good size pitches too.

I'm not sure if it was the time of year, but it was very windy - the site is quite high and the field we were in - 4 - seemed to catch the wind. It was so bad at the end of the week that our porch awning ripped off the side of the caravan.

Theres plenty on site to keep the kids busy, although it does have to be paid for; indoor pool (which was very clean and the first one I'd been to that didn't drip condensation on your head), pony riding, petorama animal petting area, crazy golf etc. Although having said that, we only paid £75 for the week so I didn't mind the extra! Theres a shop, take away-cooked to order when we were there but not very big-restaurant, bar (basic barfood but ok), caravan sales area and accessory shop which is handy.

Plenty of loo's and showers, which had lovely hot water and were very clean, although they really need heating in them - very chilly at this time of year; field 5 has the only block with heating. The chemical waste disposal also needs updating.

One particular pet hate of mine are seasonal pitches. I'm sure they're ok at the height of the season, but by this time of year they can just look abandoned and desolate. Several had awnings sagging under the weight of rainwater, and a few had collapsed and had awnings flapping around in the wind. You couldn't see the sides of some of the caravans due to the length of the grass.

The surrounding area is nice, but very hilly. Combe martin is a little run down, but ilfracombe is nice and the beach at Woolacombe is gorgeous; flat, wide, clean and pebble free. We visited the nearby Wildlife and Dinosaur park-a bit pricey at £40 for a family of 4,and we'd done it all in 3 hours. It was also very hilly - some of the slopes were very steep. Barnstaple is great for shopping, and there's a tesco nearby.

A huge round of applause to the staff at Stowford - they were all extremely pleasant and helpful, and the Halloween party that they put on was fantastic - they all worked extremely hard and we all had a whale of a time.

I'd definitely visit this site again

We spent a week at Stowford in half term. The site was a bit boggy but the weather was very wet. All in all the site was in good condition. I stayed in field 3 this time and having stayed in field 5 before must say the toilets are not as nice. They are functional always clean but cold with open doors at each end. They are basic but loads of toilets!

The pool is very good and a great price. It cost us about £4 for a family of four. The bar and staff were a pleasure.

We went to the Halloween party for the kids. It was held in the barn which was really well done out with great lighting effects. The only down point was there was no music and two games over 3 hours for about 100 kids. There was no real structure and just a real shame. Once everyone realised it was bad we were told to move up to the smaller bar where there was nowhere to sit. There were many disappointed families that night. Stowford Staff, you need to get to grips with this.

I would give this site 7 out of 10. I must also point out it was a good price too.

Great campsite with all facilities needed including caravan accessory/repair shop. A well stocked and reasonably priced on site shop. The Pitch we were on was very well drained and level with no muddy patches. The campsite is very large and to help they provide you with a map which is very useful. The swimming pool and pub were close by and were both very nice the swimming pool was cleaned twice a day and was very good with separate changing rooms and cubicles. The pub was also very nice with hot and cold food available all day. Easy site to find off m5 and we will be returning.

Stayed here for the Bank Holiday weekend. First time at the campsite and found it a lovely site. Had something for everyone, such as play areas, indoor heated swimming pool (though lady on reception could do with smiling now and again and be a bit more customer friendly!), bars, pub, resturant (though be aware this gets busy on Bank Holidays and you could be delayed in getting your food!), football court, tennis court, farm animals, crazy golf and golf course. There was also entertainment provided in the bars on the evening.

The only negative points I would make are; no hairdriers/sockets available in the ladies, so for those without electric hook up (despite all pitches having electric points), might be disappointed. In addition, although disabled toilet facilities available, the doors to the gents/ladies are not automatic and heavy so you may experience difficulty to actually enter the toilet/shower block! A surprise these days to have had this new build passed with H&S regulations!
