This site is superb apart from one particular problem. When using an awning the site owners insist that you use either a breathable groundsheet or none. Since the pitch we were on had just been occupied by a large tent the grass was dead where the awning had to be sited. Due to two grandchildren staying with usI had to sleep in the annexe and, for a week, slept on mud. If I had opted for a hardstanding pitch I realise that this would have solved the problem but why should I pay extra for the privilege when the same rules don't, (can't) apply to tents? We love this site but will not be going again until they have resolved this problem perhaps by separating tents and tourers. I have emailed the site on two occasions and have never received a reply, hence my low score on customer service and my low overall rating.

Booked for 1 week stayed for 2 - what a site!
A very big site, the biggest we have ever stayed on but as other reviews have said it has the feel of a small site because it is split into a number of different fields, each with a large amenities block which were always immaculately clean. Never had to queue for the showers or the washing up facilities and they always had hot water. Very friendly and helpful staff who directed us to our large and spacious pitch in field 4.
Upon arrival we were met with the worst weather Devon could through at us, the pitch drained well and did not become muddy.
On site shop was well stocked for basics (Tesco's only a short drive away in Ilfracombe) Fish and Chip Shop - Fantastic, didn't use the restaurant as we had two cocker spaniels with us and they were not allowed in but we drank and ate in the stables bar a few times and we were never disappointed. Swimming pool excellent and the little ones loved the kiddies disco.
There is also horse riding on site which my daughters thoroughly enjoyed and we also used the dogs creche for a day which was very helpful and the dogs were well looked after, I wish more campsites had this to offer.
Pitch n Putt and Crazy Golf on site and a Petorama
Were a big hit with the kids as was the Bird of Prey show that was put on free of charge by Stowford.
Combe Martin with its rock pools well worth a visit as is Ilfracombe Harbour and Woolacombe Beach must be one of the best in britain with its beautiful golden sands. Kids spent hours in the water body boarding.
Would I go back? YES definitely I didn't want to come home

We arrived at the campsite after the weather the previous week a having been awful. On arrival booking in was quick and we were pitched in field 2. The pitch was huge and slightly sloping however because of the previous weather it was difficult putting the caravan on the pitch as it was getting stuck in the mud.
The site is large however as previously mentioned it feels smaller because of the different areas. Toilets and showers were always clean and never a queue.
Had food the first night on site which was a disaster, waited about 40 minutes for our food which half came from the chipshop next door and the sirloin steak that I ordered came out and was full of fat. The girls who were serving were very polite however they were understaffed. I would not recommend eating on site.
The site is in an area which the local beaches are easy to Travel to if you have a car. Woolocombe was very nice.
The swimming pool was adequate but the toilets within it needed a clean.
The pet handling place smelt, and wasn't the nicest of places to visit, however the kids appeared to really enjoy it.
I think if you like the club atmosphere for a reasonable price then this would be the place for you however I won't be revisiting as it wasn't our type of ate, but you don't know unless you try!

We came to this pitch on the second week of our little tour! And were disappointed. It seems mainly to be used by caravans, which makes it feel a bit anti-social, not a friendly atmosphere.
We were a diagonal across a whole big field away from the toilet/shower block, which with a 5 year old isn't fun! The shop was expensive, the pool was good, staff let you borrow balls etc but no slide or anything and you had to pay for the use. We played crazy golf, and literally had the balls thrown at us by the disinterested staff.
I think they had given us a pitch at the top of the field as some of the lower ones were muddy, but the result was feeling very isolated with no other tents around us (admittedly some people may like this!). Once we trekked across the field the toilet block was good and looked modern, never had to wait for a shower.
It is so windy at this site, which the staff report is normal! Even when returning form a day out in lovely weather, you could actually feel a change as soon as you turn into the drive to extreme wind! We had to remove our tent extension at 0100 in the morning as it was blowing off, and as a result didn't bother putting it up again. I understand British weather isn't reliable but it seems that windy is the norm at this site. We had a couple of sleepless nights due to the wind!
The play grounds were good, and there is a few on this site. There are lots of things to do in the local area, which we took advantage of and only returned to sleep!

This is a huge site - largely grass pitches - all with electric hook up.
Site has good facilities, excellent toilet block, good play areas, nice swimming pool and even a petting zoo. There is plenty of space if so even though there can be a lot of people there you should not feel crowded.
We have small children and found the facilities very useful on rainy days (which we had a lot of this year).
The staff were nice, helpful and accomodating so absolutely nothing but praise for them.
On our stay there were some noisy neighbour issues, one camper deciding to share his 'drum and base' from his VW with us all - no problem until the kids go to bed, although he was an idiot, and refused to turn it down when asked politely, the security guard on the site reacted to it immediately when I reported it. Credit to the site and him for resolving that before any arguments broke out!
My only constructive criticism is that the site is not very level and in a caravan some of the pitches really do need some blocks to level up on. This is especially true in the wet weather of this summer - it would be worth mentioning this to caravanners in order that they come prepared!
On the whole - a good site, is possibly a bit big for my personal taste - but cannot fault it otherwise.

A neat and tidy but very large touring (and a few tents) site (perhaps 2500 units (± 500), many of them seasonal), although the rolling fields are divided into half a dozen probably original fields, so the effect is not overwhelming. Despite its size, it is almost impossible to see it until you actually arrive.
The large size enables the owners to provide a good range of facilities – good sized shop, an extensive camping equipment shop, a couple of bars, restaurant facilities, an on-site fish and chip shop; leisure facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a small golf course, horse riding, a large games field.
And for dog owners, the best and most extensive dog walk I’ve ever found on a camp site.
Toilet blocks (at least the one in our area) are not new, but prompt no complaints.
Not a site for people without a car or motor bike as there are no nearby bus routes; similarly cyclists would need to be fit as the nearest places are a long way downhill to get to, and even longer uphill coming back.
Combe Martin, Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Croyde Bay are all less than ten miles away, whilst the major town of Barnstable is perhaps a bit further, depending on which of several winding roads you take. Nearer is a new Tesco, about four miles away on the road into Ilfracombe. No fuel there though, and local garages were about 6 to 8p a gallon dearer than what we are used to – fill up when you are visiting Barnstaple.
Links to the outside word can be problematic – internet connection is supposed to be available in the bar or reception area, but we couldn’t get a connection. And our different mobile phones would not work until we drove away from the site.
For the internet there are wi-fi cafés in Barnstable (and no doubt elsewhere); and also, we found, on at least three car parks in Ilfracombe!
Towing a caravan, we followed the site’s recommended B3230 route from Barnstable – hard work on the winding, up and down hilly road. On arrival, a regular visitor recommended a much easier (for towers) route using the A361 through Braunton; about six miles further on, turn right at the roundabout junction with the A3123 to Lynton – probably four or five miles longer, but on ‘proper’ roads and probably quicker. Also, coming back, signs for the M5 turn you right over the new bridge in Barnstable, and effectively take you round a southern by-pass route, so no towing through the town centre.

Very large site with lots and lots of facilities including a swimming pool, crazy golf, pitch and put, restaurant, more than one pub, takeaway food, shop etc etc.
Hard standing pitches though are Tarmac ! Cannot put tent pegs in so although the hard standing is large awning had to be on grass which in wet weather is not good. Also ground sheets have to be breathable.
Toilets and showers looked brand new in field 5 which is where we stayed.
Riding stables on site and also day kennels for dogs if you want a dog free day. We didn't use the kennels as on inspection they turned out to be a shed with individual cages which were not attended by anyone so dogs in darkish shed on their own.
Very windy site, which we were told by regulars was usual so maybe straps to hold down awning would be advisable.
Good site for visiting north Devon but I would imagine would be more suitable for families in the summer than people who wanted a bit of peace and quiet.

We have just returned from a weeks stay over half term at Stowford. This is a great site. The staff were welcoming when we arrived and take the time to explain what is on and where to find your pitch.
The pitches are large and well laid out. We were able to put our Royal Barcelona 6 & our MPV on the pitch with plenty of space to spare. Pitches are pretty level, well spaced out, and given all the rain we have had over half term are well drained.
The site is big and even though it was busy over the Jubilee weekend it did not feel too busy. Toilets and washing facilities are excellent and staff do a good job in keeping them clean on a regular basis. Plenty of hot water. Did not have to queue while we were there. Another plus is that Radio 2 is piped through to the dishwashing area so it took a couple of nights for my wife to realise why I kept offering!
On site shop is well stocked and prices were reasonable. On site restaurant was good value and quality was good too. We did not try the swimming pool or bar but we did look in and looked OK and reasonably priced.
Can recommend the site especially for families. Quiet by 10pm. Plenty of on site activities plus the surrounding area.
Woolacombe beach well worth it on a good day (expensive to park as they charge by the day only). Watermouth Castle and Milky Way worth a visit (especially on a rainy day) - check the leaflets in the site reception as they often have discount entry vouchers!
All in all a great week except for all the liquid sunshine and gale force winds which forced us to cut short our stay by 1 night

We stayed in our large family tent on field 3. Our pitch also had plenty of room for our car and trailer.
Shower block was always clean, never had to queue either. Lots to do on site including pitch and putt and crazy golf, indoor swimming pool which was a godsend due to the rain.
Excellent meals which were reasonably priced in the restaurant. There is a take away chip shop on site and also a well stocked shop.
The site is ideally located for lynton and lynmouth, woolacombe, ilfracombe (including tesco) and coombe martin.

We have just returned from an 8 night stay at stowford. Our friends also stayed in their tourer
The site is fairly easy to find if you follow the directions they give you (avoiding nasty tight roads).
Check in was easy with pleasant staff giving clear directions to pitches.
We used field 3 and had a grass pitch at the top of the field. There is loads of space for caravan awning and room for car next to them.
The field is sloped so even at the top you need to level the caravan well. Due to the wet weather we have had we needed to re check and level after a few days due to movement and sinking slightly.
The site is well equipped with takeaway, bars restaurants etc, unfortunately stowford seem to think June is not busy enough for things to open to a reasonable time, the site shop closed at 5pm, takeaway 8pm, We ate at the bar restaurant on our first night we found the prices slightly high but we have had worse, and the food was good.
Beer prices are as you would expect from a campsite with reasonable variety. Very disappointed there was only entertainment on the Saturday we arrived, a lady called Jodie Page I think her name was, a good singer though. Rest of week nothing until Friday which was disco and bingo, we missed bingo unfortunately, but the disco seemed to turn the bar into a chav convention for a short while with all the teenagers with tracksuits and baseball caps being a bit rowdy on the dancefloor. Then after their bedtime or curfew it turned into a good night.
Shower block was always clean and tidy and showers good quality, only gripe was that they closed most blocks at the same time for cleaning between 10.45 am and 12.00 which meant you had to use field 5 which was a treck, staggered cleaning times would be a massive help.
The site itself is quite a way out from any local towns, Ilfracombe is a 20 min ride as are most surrounding places. Woolacombe is a waste of time unless the weather is hot enough for the beach as there is nothing else doing and parking is extortionate, very picturesque but boring.
Ilfracombe is really nice, Combe martin also although not much to do unless you like a drink as there are plenty of pubs very scenic though.
Dinosaur and wildlife park is great for families, Clovelly is a must but put your walking shoes on, is very difficult with buggies/pushchairs but well worth it if you can manage it.
Croyde Bay is nice, again very quiet but nice beach and views. We found a couple of nice pubs but the food was ridiculously expensive £5. 50 for a bowl of soup,
Most nights were spent on site in the awning as its the cheapest way to enjoy a drink we also took our own food back with us as it was the only way to enjoy takeaway after 8pm.
The site was fairly quiet most of the week with a lot of empty pitches, we decided we would like to stay on for an extra night, so enquired at reception.
We were told this wasn't possible as our pitches were booked for Saturday (even though all the surrounding pitches were and had been empty all week so it wouldn't have hurt to put the arrivals on those pitches, they had same view same space, but not possible apparently)
Not one to give up my wife then rang the site whilst we were out and spoke with a different lady who was more helpful. We could stay but only if we were prepared to take down our awnings and move. To the next pitches along. Total madness and jobsworth, but we really wanted another night so we did just that.
Sorry for the long review but a long week needs a long review,
All in all a brilliant weeks holiday with reasonable weather, bit of rain and wind but fair amount of sunshine to enjoy,
Site not all its made out to be but not that bad a site either
Would we stay at stowford again? probably not as it was a bit too far out and we found other sites on our travels closer to things that looked better
If you don't mind all of the points made above then youre probably not as fussy as we are, have more money than us to throw around and would probably enjoy it here.
Nice but very over rated site too many niggly bits to make it worth our return
