We booked this site for 3 nights as part of a tour of the Peak District in our Motorhome.
The area is lovely and its about 5 mins drive from Tansley and about 10 minutes drive into Matlock.
The camp site looks lovely and some of the pitches have hard standing and looks well maintained. One point was that its on their sign and website that they have a new shower block but its not stated that its for the tents and not the motorhomes as they are in two separate fields.
The owner seemed friendly but you have to pay cash or by cheque as they do not accept cards. The information provided by the owner was limited and perhaps more information on the site and area could have been provided.
The motorhome shower block desperately needs upgrading as the female only has 2 toilets and one cramped shower which was fine for when we stayed but during a busy period there must be a long wait for a shower. It did not appear that the showers were cleaned regularly I cannot say even every day as the shower was in the same state later in the day as it was left by someone earlier in the morning.
The sinks were small and only 3 in number again when it is busy it would not be ideal.
There is no vegetable preparation / pot cleaning area which is a must really. I'm not after all the mod cons but at the least a decent amount of showers / toilets and a veg prep area / pot cleaning area is a basic requirement.
We paid £16 per night which is reasonable but for the facilities provided it was over priced in my opinion. Don't get me wrong its a nice area but if the facilities are improved I think it would be a lovely site. I would be reluctant to visit again.
There was a dog walking area but no children's play area.

Nice site overall but it felt a little cramped. The units were less than a metre apart in some places and with cars next to tents it was difficult to manouvre sometimes. The pitches were also quite small and we only just got our tent on.
There were good facilities that were really well kept and Matlock had everything you needed. No play area for the children which was a bit of a problem for some campers.

Just back from a 'Campathon' to celebrate my 60th, all my friends and family, 20-odd of us in all - and the day we were all there together turned out to be just perfect, hot and sunny with barbecues, bunting, the lot! What a perfect way to celebrate a big birthday!
The site was all I could have hoped for and the owners could not have been more helpful and accommodating for us. The only small suggestion I could make to perhaps make a great site even better would be the addition of a small stool in the shower cubicles to sit on whilst foot-drying. We have had those in other sites and it really makes drying oneself so much easier. There was a slight hiccup with the hot water to the basins and pot wash while we were there but nothing too bad. The showers were just perfect.
Perhaps I have created a monster now because everybody wants to go again next year! Don't worry folks, us over 60's are quiet, we NEED our beauty sleep!

Have just returned from a stay at this site and do not totally agree with previous comments - perhaps we were unfortunate in the timing of our visit. We found the pitches very cramped. There were a lot of very large tents that more than filled their pitch then had to encroach on others space to park their cars. As a result the site appeared very crowded and we weren't too sure about the fire safety aspect when barbecues were in use. It was also very noisy as there were several large groups camped together and their loud chatter went on past 11pm.
It would be nice to see the owners on the site from time to time - they took our money then we never saw them again. We have never stayed on a site where the owners have been so conspicuous by their absence.
Overall the site is attractive and well sheltered by trees and bushes. The man who comes in to clean the facilities and empty the bins does a sterling job. There is plenty to do in the area and the food and service at the nearby Gate pub is very good and reasonably priced.
Finally a note to those with motorhomes. There is fresh water available but there is nowhere to empty chemical or grey waste, you have to use the facilities on the caravan site next door which is a bit of a trek with full receptacles.

Echo all the positive comments already written about this site. We visited in April with a couple of small tents.
The site is well laid out with individual pitches and you may be lucky enough as we were to nab one of the picnic tables supplied for use over your stay.
Local pub is a bit of a walk and quite a steep climb back.
Facilities are second to none
Definitely follow the directions given to the site and do not rely on Sat Nav unless you like driving up steep, narrow and winding roads.
Would definitely return.

This was our 3rd visit to Packhorse Farm, the second this year. As always the site was very clean as were the shower blocks and Susan and her husband were as welcoming and accomodating as ever. We took a trip into Bakewell, somewhere we hadn't visited for many years, I can recommend a day here and you can't not visit Bakewell without buying a Bakewell Tart, which was the best Tart I had ever eaten!
Our only cause for concern on this visit was a number of other guests to the site, mainly large groups, who were loud and very noisy until very late into the night, as we were staying for 3 nights we endured two nights of this, from 2 different parties.
Both Susan and her husband did ask the guests concerned to consider other campers on the site and to be quieter, unfortunately the quiet didn't last long! This is no fault off the owners off the site, camp rules are very clearly displayed with regards to noise and music, the fault lies with a minority of campers not respecting the rules and fellow campers trying to sleep, at 11pm at night this is not an unreasonable hour to want to sleep!
We have booked to go again in September, fingers crossed we have quieter nights!

Stayed here over a busy Friday and Saturday night early july, and visited nearby Matlock, Matlock Bath and The Heights of Abraham (fantastic, by the way!). Site was very welcoming and easy to find by way of the instructions sent out - point to note, use the instructions sent - don't rely on Sat Nav as it'll likely take you up a very narrow, steep lane. I speak from experience.
We found the pitches to be a little cramped in the corner of the field furthest from the shower block, but as our neighbours were fine we had no problems other than some fairly intense snoring! The shower / toilet block is second-to-none and has set the bar very high for all future camping trips! The pitches between the trees nearer to the shower block looked very cosy.
The only issue we had was music being played by a group of younger lads, and the campsite owners did nothing whatsoever to curb the noise, despite it continuing into the early hours of Sunday morning. Thankfully we were some distance away!
All in all a cracking site that we will be very happy to return to - as long as the owners enforce their own rules!

This is a lovely site, the owners were both very welcoming on our arrival. We stayed on pitch 12, which was a good size and great if you have dogs, as bit secluded.
The toilet block was clean, showers were hot and it had great little dressing cubicles with sink/mirror opposite them. Pot wash area was clean with plenty of hot water and this is were you get the menu for the Indian takeway that delivers to your pitch!
The surrounding area was lovely and good for walking the dogs. The nearby towns of Matlock and Bakewell are a must and also the tavern at Tansley is great for lunch.
The only downside we felt was that it could do with a little shop for morning papers etc, as you have to drive into town to the nearest shop. Overall a great little site and we would highly recommend it and will definitely be back.

What a great campsite,
We had a large pitch and the site was very clean. Shower / toilets were very clean. Hot water was pre-set and was great. Plenty of room to wash up the pots and dishes, with the free use of a freezer for the ice blocks.
Shops were a distant, and the pub.
Site could do with a little on site shop for those arriving empty.
Nice and quite in the evening

Lovely site with immaculate facilities - toilet and shower block heated with hot water at all times of the day. No issues about using the facilities although the site appeared to be full. The site is broken up by lots of trees / bushes which gives you a feeling of privacy.
The kids enjoyed themselves making dens and visiting the animals (horses and goats). The village is walkable - we made it there for the summer fete. Indian takeaway from Matlock delivered on Saturday night - good food and on time.
