Just returned from a scorching weekend at Packhorse Farm. The tent field was very busy, but also quiet as soon as it got dark. Would echo all the comments about the site by Dodge. The owners are very friendly.
The lack of a kids play area is really the only downside to the site. There are two caravan fields and one is quite large - I am sure a small play area could be squeezed in. Still it's only a small niggle and didn't stop ours from having a great time. We would definitely use the site again next time we're in the area.
We also visited the Gate Inn to watch the England v. Paraguay world cup game. There were 14 of us in all (including 8 kids ranging from 2 to 14) all squeezed into their tv room along with the locals and others from the site and we were made to feel very welcome.

Visited as a solo camper, found the camping field about full, but the available pitch was flat, well mown and dry. The potwash area is right next to the tent area, and is ideal for purpose. Hot water is very hot! A number of discreet bin areas help keep the place tidy. Toilets are in the caravan area, a short walk away. Gents was clean and tidy, the one small shower area was clean too, but rather dark. I could see these getting very cramped at peak times. I was concerned to see the isolator for the shower pulled off the ceiling, and hanging only by its cable, but as there is the number of an electrician pinned to the toilet block wall I am sure It will be repaired shortly. The list of useful local numbers on the toilet noticeboard is a very good idea. No shop/bar facilities, if you need it, you take it. Tansley village is within walking distance, but most people appeared to go to Matlock, and Matlock Bath. On the whole, if you want a site to unwind without the bells and whistles, this is the one. I will certainly return.

May Bank Holiday 2006 and typical English weather. Small quiet site not far from crowded Matlock. Caravan area looked a bit open. Tent site was compact with some medium sized fir trees. It is possible to camp within the trees to be sheltered but they don't overhang to ruin your tent. Ground was soft and fairly level. Prices were very reasonable. At the end of a building are two washing up sinks with free (scalding) hot water. One small but very clean toilet block. Tiny wash basins and one tiny shower but free hot water. Overall the facilities were acceptable. Nothing on the site for kids but the ones we saw soon made friends with the others on the site and were burning off energy in the fresh air.
A mile down the road is the Gate Inn, a no smoking Pub serving excellent meals and beer. We would visit again (the site and the pub!). From this location careful map reading takes you along quiet back roads to anywhere you want in the Peak District whilst avoiding the busy Bank Holiday A6.

We found the site relatively easy as it is signposted and were surprised how spacious it actually is. There were about 4 other tents in our field and the only downside was the pubescent teenager who was laughing and causing a racket until 4am! Other than that it was clean, tidy and had good facilities. It was £10 for the both of us and the showers had hot water and were free. Also, there was a clean area for washing pots.
We enjoyed a nice run on in the morning (we only stayed for one night) and the scenery was lovely. Definitely will visit again; this was our first time camping and was a very enjoyable experience.

August 2004 A lot of the pitches are taken by longterm caravans. There looks to be 9 electric pitches available and probably about 15 without electric. The campsite is extremely tidy, there is a separate area for tents which looks really nice as there are christmas trees dotted about and you pitch in and around them, there looks to be plenty of space. There is a pot washing area, and you have to walk up to the caravan area for loo and shower, but its not too far. The tent pitch site looked full and I would say there were about 20+ tents on.
The toilet and showers are very small, the ladies had two toilets and one shower, the shower cubicle was very small and it was difficult to change as the floor was wet through (hubby said this wasnt happening in his side!). The showers cost 20p. The block was dated but kept very clean etc., and given the number of campers I never saw a que!
The caravan pitches aren't particularly private but the sites not busy so it wasn't a problem. The approach road through Tansley is not very wide and luckily not well used so we didn't have a problem with passing anyone - basically you couldnt have done!
This is a very quiet relaxed site, not at all busy, there is a nursery but we didn't look at that (not enough time). The nearest shop/pub etc is in Tansley which is about 1 1/2 miles from the site and a nice walk. The owner doesn't specify a time to be off and we left about 5pm. There are lots of walks in the area and the walk up to Riber Castle for the views is worth the hill!
We will definately use this site again as it is handy for Matlock Bath, lots of walks and very relaxing. Families with children wouldn't like the caravan side I think it would be a bit too quiet, however there were a few 'happy' sounding kids on the tent pitches. I was just amazed how the site is not fully booked at this time of year.
