We loved this site - the shower and toilet facilities were excellent. We took our 1 year old and the baby changing facilities/disabled facilities had a proper shower(not push button) which was perfect for taking the little 1 in. Each tent has its own private pitch surrounded by trees making private alcoves and many have their own picnic table. The washing area was clean and in a great condition and there was even a box of outdoor games you can borrow. The lady that we booked with was really friendly and overall we had a great stay. We will definitely return. Matlock was lots of fun for families and young children and we had a great day out at Gullivers Kingdom (far from Alton Towers but good fun for 1 to 10 year olds). If your not into bikes/bikers avoid Sundays in matlock but if you are you'll love it.

Really good campsite with very friendly owner. The shower blocks were very clean and tidy. 3 proper showers which were free to use. Cleaned daily which was nice. My wife hates spiders and she was more than happy to use this shower block.

The tent pitches are a bit narrower than it looks on their web site although they have some nice tent pitches amongst some trees which might give a more space. We were on a standard on lined up with other tents. There was still just enough room to get out Norfolk Lake with front extension, car and trailer in though.

The tent bit is separate from the caravan bit and in my opinion is nicer. There is no shop but the owners sell a few basic tent spares - pegs etc.

Plenty to see and do around the area. It was fairly quiet with no large single sex groups.

The one thing they didn't have was a playground for children which would have been good for our two little ones but really there was nothing else I would change about this place.

Just returned from 5 day stay at Packhorse Farm. We had a lovely stay and were very impressed with the campsite. We had lovely weather which always helps - clear nights and great views of the stars.

Toilets and showers immaculate and well maintained - separate wash rooms great idea for extra privacy especially with 4 year old in tow.

We had a good pitch for our Wynnster 6 berth - pitches are a bit close together but more than made up for by being very safe and secluded so able to let kids have a bit of freedom.

Great location for Matlock and Matlock bath with loads to do to keep children entertained.

Paddling pool in Matlock park a great attraction - take kids swimmers and change of cloths or risk bringing a wet child home as we did!

Would go back.

Had a little trouble finding this site down the country lanes, first impressions of the site was good, we spent 3 nights there, very well set out with all the trees and bushes surrounding the pitches, some of these do seem to be a bit on the small side.

Toilets and personal wash cubicles very clean, pot washing area also kept clean, there is also a freezer in this area for ice packs.

A car is needed if walking is a trouble, the nearest local pub seemed to be quite a walk.

The town itself is good with plenty of things to see and do, would definitely go back there again for a short break.

This site was really nice and very clean and well kept. Facilities are excellent - plenty of hot water for showers and pot washing. The pot washing area was exceptionally clean and spacious. Although hairdryers were available they were pretty useless, but there is a socket in the toilet block, so if you like your home comforts like me, take your dryer with you!

There was no playground for the kids, but they happily played tennis and footie near the tent (we didn't realise that ball games were not allowed, but this was clearly not a problem for anyone, as nobody told us!)

I would highly recommend this site, but have just two negatives. When I booked, I was told that I would be given a large pitch for our Montana 6 tent, but when we arrived at our pitch we realised the Monty was barely going to fit as the smallish pitch was surrounded by fir trees on three sides. Somehow my husband managed to get the tent in, but we couldn't use the side door and we couldn't have fitted the extension on the front. If you are going with a tent larger than 4 berth, I would suggest that you ask for one of the pitches on the field area rather than in the tree filled bit, even though it was really private and cosy to be surrounded by trees!

Finally, it was really noisy in the night with animal sounds - the kids were not disturbed but I shot bolt upright when the cows and the cockrels started their dawn chorus! If you're camping without kids to listen out for, and if you aren't used to the sounds of the country, ear plugs are recommended!

That said, we would definitely return here again. Hope this is helpful!

This campsite is a lovely size and in very picturesque surroundings. Tansley Village is not very far.Although you would need to drive after dark. The village has 3 nice pubs serving good food. The locals are also very friendly.

The shower/washing/toilet facilities are spotless and of a high standard. Each tent pitch in the first field is separated by trees so very private. The owners were very helpful.

Matlock town is a short drive and there are shops, more pubs and other amenities.

I will definitely be returning to this campsite.

Just got back from a weekend stay at this campsite. What a fantastic place with excellent facilities.

Plenty of mature trees surrounding many of the pitches making for good privacy and atmosphere. There are 3 main areas for tents and we stayed in the one nearest the wash facilities. The tent site was nearly full but we never had to wait to use the excellent toilets and the free showers.

Our spacious pitch had electric hook up and was right next to the pot wash which proved to be a little noisy late in the evening (even though the rules stated 9pm as quiet time). This will not put us off from returning but we would ask for a pitch slightly further away but still in the first field. A freezer was provided for ice blocks and there was even a tub of toys to keep children amused whilst pitching out tent.

The only improvement that we would suggest would be a children's play area.

We will recommend this site to any of our friends and will be returning again this year!

Just returned from a weekend at this, our first camping holiday, with my partner and our dog. The facilities are excellent, bins emptied daily and the shower/toilet smelt lovely! In fact, a fellow camper with 30 years experience said that these were the best in the area and among the best anywhere. I fully concur with all the positive comments previously submitted. Only drawback is that you seem to have to get to the showers earlyish to get hot water (we got in there are about 10.30 when it was lukewarm). But maybe this applies to all sites?

The camping area was divided into two adjacent areas, one of which had trees between the pitches which afforded an element of privacy, whilst the other area was more open plan. This second area seemed to be devoted to those with children. There was a slight mistake over our booking (they mistook our dog for a child!) and that may be why we ended up there. Children ran around playing ballgames and doing cartwheels outside the tents and consequently it was a bit noisy. Whilst this could be annoying to some, we felt that it gave the place a lovely, happy family atmosphere.

Matlock is a charming town with lots of character -lots of individual shops and certainly not a carbon copy town taken over by the usual chains.

On our way out of the area we popped into Scotland Nursery in Tansley for a cup of tea after fighting with our tent in a sudden downpour! We had a generous pot of the most delicious loose leaf tea. The cakes, which must be home made judging by the size of them (e.G. Bakewell tart about 3 inches thick!) were to die for!

Overall, a very positive introduction to camping which, we hope, hasn't unrealistically raised our expectations of other sites!

Just returned from this site and we were very impressed. Facilities were spotless and regularly cleaned and the owner was very friendly and helpful, telling us about the nearby areas. Each pitch area was surrounded by a little semi circle of fir trees which made it very picturesque and also gave those with young children the opportunity for a bit of peace and quiet.Plenty to do in nearby Matlock with an excellent local park with paddling pool and boating lake. Ideal site if you have young children. It has everything you could need.

We found Packhorse Farm to be thoughtfully landscaped; well maintained; with a peaceful ‘off the beaten track’ feel. More than happy to add my agreement to the previous complimentary reviews.

One detail that has not been previously mentioned it that caravans and tents are kept totally separate in adjacent fields. So separate in fact as to have two different booking numbers. Tent bookings should be made on the number listed in site details and caravan bookings on 01629 582781.

Both fields have their own toilet / shower (free) blocks, and you are at liberty to use either. The campers are treated to a modern, all singing all dancing block which includes a pot washing facility. The caravaners have a much smaller, older block. Whilst the latter is somewhat cramped by current standards, actually I preferred it because it had a shower with a ‘proper’ tap. (i.E. Not the irritating push button ones that only run for 20-30 secs!)

Without doubt, the toilet blocks are regularly and thoroughly cleaned / maintained. Nevertheless, when the site is busy; the weather rainy and the feet mucky, it would have been nice to have had a mop & bucket provided so that you could give the shower cubicle a quick once over yourself. Also, some clothes hooks around the washing area would have been nice.

No local shops. You can get everything in either Matlock or Chesterfield.

Feel I must mention firstly; The Old Poets Corner in Ashover which we found to be a first class eats / drinks / music pub. (and Chesterfield CAMRA Pub of the Year 2009.) Secondly; The Tram Museum in Crich, which has been incredibly well developed.

To sum up: an extremely well kept site set in a very nice location.
