We visited Packhorse farm over Easter, we loved it! Great location and easy to find. The campsite was clean, tidy and very well kept. The toilet / shower / washing up areas were clean and the water was hot. The hosts were friendly and helpful and offered us advice on local attractions and where to eat and drink (The Gate Inn). They had plenty of leaflets of the local attractions and sold milk at the reception. We had a big tent and site 4 was more than big enough. We will definitely return. If I have any criticism at all- there is some road noise and I think a couple of chairs in the shower room would be helpful.

I received a friendly reception on the phone when booking, and as the site was quiet, they were kind enough to not worry what time we arrived.
A very clean and extremely well maintained site and facilities.
We received a lovely welcome and the owners had been up to the site earlier in the day to find a suitable sheltered and not too wet pitch for us.
Although the site is in the middle of no where it is easy access to Matlock where there is a large Sainsburys, and various food outlets.
The toilet block was very clean, well lit inside and out, and well heated, the showers were lovely, hot and powerful. The hairdryers were not very powerful but the hand dryer was and there is a socket to be able to use your own.
The pot wash area was sheltered, well lit and clean, with local information displayed on the notice board.
Overall a pleasant and peaceful place to stay.

Friendly welcome, good value, great scenery, nice facilities, good size pitches. When being good is this easy, it's amazing how so many others fail to get it right! That's my review really but the site says I have to enter 300 characters so I'll say a bit about the local pubs too. The best is probably the Gate which, handily, is nearest to the camp site. Really good value, nice food and decent ales. However, anyone staying at Packhorse farm would be missing out if they didn't visit the Old Poets' Corner in the nearby village of Ashover. This isn't the nearest pub to Packhorse farm; it's probably a 10min drive, but next time we visit we'll be ditching the car and making the 45 minute walk home! 10 real ales in a pub that serves a small village is amazing and worthy of the Camera pub of the year award they currently hold. Ok, have gone way over 300 characters so will shut up now. Suffice to say that Packhorse Farm and the surrounding area is well worth a visit!

We had a great weekend stay at this site.
The site is very well cared for and the owners are very friendly and helpful.
The facilities are very modern and clean with no lack of hot water. The pot washing area was very clean and had plug points for charging phones etc.
We had some noisy neighbours but we cannot blame the owners for that.
All in all this is a great friendly little site that we can highly recommend and hope to visit again soon

We visited Pack Horse last year and really enjoyed the site and surrounding area. When we arrived at our pitch, we had hundreds of flies landing on the windscreen and all over the front of the car, yuk, they seemed to appear from nowhere! As we looked at each other and both thinking that we will be leaving and have to start looking elsewhere they vanished as quickly as they arrived. We pitched the tent and stayed for a week and didn't see another single solitary fly. When we finally arrived after being sent here there and everywhere by the sat nav; we found the owners to be very welcoming and helpful and left us alone but were around if needed. The facilities are really nice and clean and the best we have had so far! Very good value for money costing us £21pn which included EHU and our dog. We are planning our next trip in Sept 13 and are looking forward to relaxing in the beautiful surroundings.

Went to the site at the end of October 2013 and stayed for four nights, this was the first time I had been camping, I found the site on here and all the reviews were pretty good so decided to give it a try. We turned up un announced and were met by the owners who were very pleasant, due to the time of year we had EHU for our heater, we were taken to the hook up pitches and chose the one we wanted the pitch was a decent size with a hedge either side for privacy the pitch was flat, even after a lot of rain the ground was still quite firm. The site is quite enclosed with lots of trees for shelter. The facilities were excellent, the toilet and shower block were better than some hotels I've stayed in, . This is a fantastic site that I would recommend.

We chose this site after reading the previous reviews as the first site to visit after many years away from camping and were delighted with our short 2 day stay - mostly delighted anyway.
The campsite was well laid out and the pitches were generous enough. The shower block was clean with plenty of hot water for showers, although with only 3 showers in the ladies, we did have to queue on the Friday night/Saturday morning when the site was almost full.
The site is on a slightly sloping field but not enough to cause any problems and the hedges around the pitches gave the site a welcome enclosed feeling.
The owners seemed lovely from the brief chats we managed and the fresh eggs went down a treat for breakfast.
As others have said, there is a little noise from the road behind the campsite and from the dog kennels nearby but nothing too bad.
So, no complaints so far.
That said, the Friday night was ruined (not just for us) by two families that pitched opposite us. No one should have to suffer loud and foul language from fellow campers late at night on a site that is supposed to be peaceful. I know this isn't the fault of the owners but hopefully we can encourage site-owners in general to adopt a more positive approach to camping etiquette if we let them know.
Will we go back? maybe, but not in school holiday time.

A pleasant and small site in a peaceful environment.
The owner was friendly, polite and informative upon checking in at reception (porch of her home) and provided a map of the site including details on our pitch.
We had pitch 28 (we weren't guided to it but it was easy to find) this was prearranged over the phone, which is quite large to fit our 8berth tent.
The ground was flat and pitches were well labelled with posts to the rear. There wasn't a lot of space between pitches for vehicles but thankfully it was very quiet and after the first day of arrival we were the only tent in this area with only 11 tents on the entire site.
Facilities were modern and tidy. Throughout the 4 days of our trip their seemed to be a lot of tissue around on the toilet floors however which could've been cleaned more frequently but generally the site was very clean. Shower cubicles were spotless although they needed a shelf and seat. They were lovely and hot although the push button only kept water flowing for around 10 seconds which was frustrating and you were unable to adjust the temperature. I took my children into the disabled/baby changing cubicle to shower as this did have dials to adjust the heat.
Taps are push button, there was lots if hand wash and there are some sinks which are within cubicles for some privacy if required. Hand dryers were all working and there were hair dryers and a plug socket for charging mobiles or electric devices within the toilet block.
There is a freezer by the washing area for ice blocks which was useful and solar lighting along the main driveway at night.
We enjoyed our stay and would return. Noise was minimal bar some barking from nearby which began in the distance from 7. 30 one morning.

Have just returned from a six night stay at Packhorse Farm. We chose this site after reading several reviews of sites in the area and were not disappointed. The owners are friendly and helpful, the site is well laid out and the toilets and showers were very, very clean. The washing up area was great and the freezer for freezing ice packs was welcome as was the socket in the ladies loos.
There was some intermittent noise from a nearby kennels and some road noise but this wasn't a problem. The site was very quiet at the start of our stay as not all schools had broken up but towards the end of the week it got noticeably busier.
The only things I think the site lacked were, a shelf in the ladies toilets to put your toiletry bag on and a fold down seat in the dressing areas of each of the shower cubicles. That said, we could live without these and it wouldn't stop us returning.

This is my first review on this website and the first time we've camped in the UK for many years - we have camped in France for the last 20-odd years though.
From the first phone call to check availability, the arrival, tha pitch we were allocated and the facilities, right through to the management of the site and the cleanliness of the the toilet and shower block, we cannot praise highly enough the standard of the Packhorse Farm campsite.
We followed the recommendation of the owners and visited both the Tavern in Tansley and the fish & chip shop in Wessington. A word to the wise; go on a three day fast before attempting to eat at either establishment. The 'lighter option' at the Tavern at lunchtime was a telegraph pole disguised as a baguette with a very generous portion of chips and a salad. We had foolishly asked for a side order of onion rings which were superb but huge in size. The chippy is serving Moby Dick size portions of fish with a half acre of spuds for garnish. You have been warned!
All-in-all, a very enjoyable 2 days and nights and we will be back as soon as possible.
