This is a super campsite. We're a 4-person family and camped with 4 other families in the non-electric area. Pitches are numbered but very large - our 7x7 m tent (Hi Gear Sahara) fitted on with loads of room to spare. There are wide pathways between rows. One night the camp was full (according to the signs) but it did not feel cramped - still plenty of open space.

Site managers very friendly. Pretty flowers to make the toilet block presentable. Sensible gravelling of high traffic areas of the large site.

Main toilet block is modern and very clean morning and night. And during a 4am visit to the gents I found out why - there was a cleaner working at that time! I complemented him on his great work.

The toilet block could do with better ventilation though, gets very steamy. Our party found the push-button showers rather too hot, we mentioned that to the manager who said she would pass it on to the owner.

Location is superb. No traffic noise as the field is so far from the road. The site is adjacent to forest areas and 5 minutes walk from a pretty stream which provided endless entertainment for our party's kids. With nearby attractions such as this, the site doesn't need a play area. Good Vodafone coverage.

The site is very dark at night, only the toilet block is lit. This makes it great for star gazing, we saw the International Space Station pass a couple of times and some shooting stars.

A pleasant flat 30 minute walk (following directions given to us on a sheet from reception) takes you to Brockenhurst which is pretty and has basic shops as other reviewers have commented. We walked back a slightly longer way and saw plenty of horses grazing on the open grassland.

Another day we visited Hengistbury Head, a headland with lovely sandy beach a half hour drive from the site. The beach has toilets and cafes and some lovely looking beach huts.

We'll certainly be returning to this site.

We only stayed for a couple of nights as we were visiting the New Forest Show but we will definitely be back for a longer holiday. Even with all the show traffic it felt peaceful and we were treated to a visit from a herd of deer at 4am. There was plenty of room for our large family tent plus a smaller one (teenage daughter brought a friend) and our car and trailer. We also had a large space in which we were able to play tennis and frizbee without annoying anyone else and the field was lovely and flat, with plentiful water points.

The facilities were superb, modern and spotlessly clean. Only one minor suggestion which would be to have some hooks/shelving around the washbasin area as there was absolutely nowhere to put towels and washbags, especially at busy times. Also possibly an additional mirror next to the hairdryers (in the ladies anyway) as you can find yourself looking over the shoulder of some person trying to clean their teeth while styling your hair. Not really a problem but maybe could be annoying for some. There was no additional charge for hairdryers and showers so no dreaded scrabbling around for another 20p piece, and not forgetting free facilities for freezing cold blocks too, even including the loan of frozen blocks if needed, which was a thoughtful touch.

The owners/managers couldn't have been more welcoming and went out of their way to make sure our stay was a pleasant one.

Unfortunately we weren't there long enough on this occasion to really explore the immediate area but we did have a lovely walk across the heath to Brockenhurst for ice-cream, where we saw wandering ponies and donkeys, plus a pretty spot next to a stream where children were paddling and playing on a rope strung from the overhanging branches, which would be ideal for a lazy afternoon with a picnic. Next time!

Our family of 5 (3 kids under 6) visited this campsite over a very hot weekend in July. It is perfectly situated in the heart of the New Forest. It is a short walk into the forest to a lovely stream with rope swings for the kids to play on. A bit further and you can take a nice walk into the lovely village of Brockenhurst over open forest land. The site is basically a very large field with part of it left to grow which is regularly visited by deer (plenty of deer droppings are evidence of this). The pitches are pretty crammed in with not much extra space with our 8 man tent and car (fortunately it was not a busy weekend and so there was space for kids to play). The shower block, toilets and washing up facilities were excellent, clean and big enough to accommodate the number of pitches. The staff were very friendly both before and during the visit. We would recommend to others and happily return.

Beautiful campsite in the heart of the forest. We stayed for 4 nights in July. The weather was amazing and the peace and scenery are unbeatable. Our two girls, aged 9 and 6 loved seeing the wild ponies and were in awe of the deer regularly visiting the campsite. There is also plenty around to amuse the little ones. Lots of cycle trails off road and little streams with tarzies. They probably would have liked a play park on site but they still found plenty to do.

The owners are very friendly and obviously love their job. The toilet block and other facilities are spotlessly clean and quite modern.

Brokenhurst is very pretty and only a short walk away. There are plenty of shops there and lovely little pubs serving good food. The train station is also there. It was only £14 return for our family of 4 to go to Bournemouth for the day.

We will definitely return and would certainly recommend. Our only criticism if we have to find one is that it would be handy if they sold a few basic essentials from the reception. One lady had a nightmare one day as she had ran out of nappies and sunscreen was needed by most. Fresh bread is also very nice on a morning, but maybe we are too used to France!

Great site with plenty of space left for children (or adults!) to play ball games etc. Direct access to the forest - fab shallow stream just a short walk from the site. Great in the heat to sit in the shade, read the papers while the dog & kids splashed about! Nice walk to Brockenhurst across the heath. Designated grass pitches - a little cosy with the neighbouring tents but certainly didn't feel too cramped. We have been more used to 'pitch where you like' sites previously. Plenty of space in between the rows of tents, so parking not an issue. Facilities good - clean showers & toilets & covered washing up point. Water very hot & they are the press button operated showers so not able to turn down - I feel it is too hot especially for young children. Able to freeze ice packs at reception. We found that people were quiet at night & early in the morning. So able to sleep well! We had a great weekend & having camped at the Forestry commission sites previously, found this site to be just as good & preferred it in many ways. Will definitely be going back for a longer stay!

This was our second visit to this site and it's changed a lot since the first visit.

They've put a new toilet/shower block in, removing the old shower, toilet and dish washing blocks. So the new building has a chemical waste disposal room, 4 covered dish washing sinks on the outside of the building, and the toilets/showers are split into men's and women's. The women's had 3 showers (plus a disabled room with a shower in), 6 sinks with mirrors above them, hair dryers on the wall (these where free) and lots of toilets. My husband says the men's side was the same. There was also a new small building in the middle of the camping field with a couple of toilets and sinks in each side.

There's also a new reception building with a freezer for ice packs inside, so you can only access it when the reception is open for a couple of hours in the morning and in the afternoon.

Our reception on arrival was lovely as always and the wardens showed us to our pitch and explained the new system. Flat stones on the ground with the pitch number on and you pitch to the right of it. They've rearranged all the pitching on the site but there is still a lot of room and it doesn't feel crowded at all. However, we were there for the hottest July week on record for a long time and found absolutely no shade on our pitch. We managed to cool our 2 year old down and stop her uncontrollable crying after another family invited us to use the shade of trees on their pitch. You would need to bear this in mind when booking your pitch, to ask for one along an edge of the field with trees.

Also, we were a little disappointed that we had paid for a EHU pitch and were therefore stuck on a pitch right along the road in and out of the site with just a wire fence between us and the road. Made it quite noisy whenever a car drove past and it really didn't feel like it was worth the extra money we paid.

Onto our actual stay on the site. We arrived on a Saturday so it was understandably quite busy but nothing the facilities couldn't cope with. Once Monday came around it went very quiet as most people left. By Thursday it had become very busy again. This is when the problems really started for us and a quite a few other people who mentioned to us they felt the same. A large group of people arrived, 2 trailer tents and at least 2 other units, it was a lot of people and kids in the group. They proceeded to break the site rule of no loud music from the moment they arrived and this continued until we left on the Saturday morning. The kids in the group also made a lot of inconsiderate noise well into the evening. On the first night we asked them politely if they would turn the music down at about 8pm as our daughter was trying to sleep. They said they would but never actually did. We mentioned to one of the wardens on their walk past our tent with their dog and she said she would go over after her rounds and ask them to turn it down. We noticed for the rest of the evening that a couple of times the music was turned down slightly but after a few minutes it would be back to being very loud again. When we mentioned this to the same warden the next day she said she had gone over and asked them to turn it down and that the campers had invited her to sit with them and have some wine! So no wonder the music was never stopped if the warden is sat there with them enjoying the free wine.

We were also concerned about the apparent double standards of the warden as earlier in the week she kept asking us if we wanted her to have our neighbouring campers music turned down, despite the fact that we couldn't even hear their music/radio from our tent that was literally next door. So needless to say we were very disappointed in the attitude of the site wardens to this issue. When it's busy you do expect an increase in the general noise but this was very much more than that and extremely inconsiderate of the campers in question.

We have now decided that this site is no longer for us. The combination of the site facilities upgrade causing a loss of the 'rough and ready' atmosphere that we loved so much last time and the disappointing attitude and handling of our complaints has made our mind up for us.

We stayed at this site for the first time in June for a weekend. Absolutely loved the place. The site is a very large open field which has electrical hook ups around the perimeter. It has deer roaming around the site, (and when I say around the site, I mean about 15 feet away from our tent at night) which could be a bit problematic for dogs who chase deer, thankfully our dog was fine. There is a small toilet block in the centre of the site, basic but very clean and they have a brand new toilet/shower/washing up block, which is very spacious and kept very clean. From what I saw there were no facilities for children, but a 200 yard stroll out of the site into the heart of the New Forest and onto their paths (who would need facilities when you have this). The only downside that I could say about the site is that when we stayed it was very windy, and due to the size of the field and the exposed aspect of it, the wind was howling through. They could maybe do with a hedge or two to stop this. Would definitely recommend and we would definitely revisit.

Just come back from a 8 night stay, what a brilliant site, as soon as we entered the site there were Fallow deer walking around the field. The toilet/shower block was one of the most modern and clean I have ever seen 1st class. The location is great open the gate and you are right in the New Forest, Brockenhurst is a short walk away through the forest along a easy route, with good views of the local wildlife. The owners are very friendly and will stop and chat and offer any advice if you need it. The hardstanding pitches are level concrete and there are plenty of water points available.

We will be going back there again.

This was our first visit to Long Meadow and after reading the reviews were really looking forward to it. The campsite had only just been re-opened after its winter closure and has been redeveloped in the means of a brand new facilities block and hardstanding with electric. We had booked a grass electric pitch but was telephoned the week before to say all the grass electric pitches were fully booked (our pitch was booked in March and confirmed as a grass pitch!), the lady in the office said we would have to be on a hardstanding pitch but we could put our tent on the grass area next to it but warned us the grass seed hadn't really 'taken'. On arrival and shown to our pitch it became immediately obvious that we wouldn't be able to pitch our tent there, there was no grass, very stony and dried out tractor tyre marks leaving the ground very uneven. The wardens were extremely helpful and managed to find us a grass pitch in the main field but we had to sacrifice the electric. I have a feeling that we were 'moved' to a hard standing pitch due to family groups booking after us but wanting to be pitched together.

The field is very level and the pitches are a good size, they have made the 19 acres 'smaller' and you can no longer pitch around the edge of the field, that saying, after the bank holiday weekend the campsite emptied out considerably and we were left with big areas to let the kids play.

The new facilities block has 6 toilets and 3 showers (push button with a little changing area with bench) for each sex, there is also a disabled toilet and shower room. The chemical disposal is in a room with two large sinks each with a chain flush and central hose - be warned the pressure from the hose is pretty fierce so watch those splashes! Around the corner on one end of the block is four washing up stations and the bins are also located there. The other end of the block is the wardens office and they were lovely and helpful and always around. There is an older portacabin style block in the middle of the field which I'm guessing is just toilets - I didn't go in them.

The site itself is basic as in it has no playground, shop etc but we liked this. There is a gate at the top of the site which leads straight into the woods and the many cycle paths and footpaths, there is a lovely stream which the dogs and kids can have fun in. It takes about 15 minutes from the site to walk into Brokenchurst which has a Tesco Extra, post office, newsagents, ice creams and a few shops. In the other direction from the site is an hours walk to Lyndhurst which has a few more shops and pubs. We went to the Oak pub in Bank which served lovely chips! This took around 45 minutes to get to.

One of the lovely things about the site is the deer which are free to roam around the campsite, they do keep their distance but must come pretty close at night if the droppings are anything to go by the next morning! We loved this site and soon forgot about the initial pitching problem and have booked 6 nights in July. If you want a peaceful, relaxing holiday with some fantastic (flat - my favourite!) walks then this is the place for you. I would say the paths through the woods are ideal for pushchairs / wheelchairs due to the flatness but they are laid to gravel. I think you can hire bikes from the site but we didn't use this facility.

Stayed here for 10 days in August. The campsite really is back to basics and a real opportunity to get away from it all. The stream running along the end of the campsite is what perfect childhoods are made of.

If I were to suggest any changes, I would say to add more water points and maybe a shower block at the other end of the field, it’s a long walk. But this is by no means criticism, the site has 10/10 from me as it is
