We recently stayed on this site and had a wonderful visit. The location is stunning; quiet and peaceful yet only 10 mins walk from Middleton and it's shops, cafes, pubs etc.
The owner was extremely friendly and welcoming. He is obviously committed to creating a high quality site, shown by the development of the lovely toilet/shower facilities. These weren't quite complete on the weekend we stayed but if the rest of the block is completed to the same standard they will make a great addition to the site. There is plenty of space between units, including lots of room for children to play, ride bikes etc. This feeling of space really adds to the tranquillity of the site. Be aware that to access the site you do travel down quite a narrow lane - this is the only draw back I can see regarding the site and wasn't an issue for us but may be if you have a really large caravan.
The site is perfect for visiting the local attractions including High and Low Force, which are just 10 mins drive away. It would be a great base for any walkers, climbers or mountain bikers.
We will certainly return for another stay.

We arrived at Leekworth mid-week in readiness for the Jubilee weekend and my first impressions were very positive. The campsite is beautifully situated and the new toilet/shower block and reception looked very smart indeed.
There is a large open field for caravans/motorhomes and EHU and at the far end of this field, about 100m away, is a smaller, narrower field for non-EHU tents. There was a peace and tranquillity about the setting that fed the soul.
The site benefits from a river that flows by the campsite, though we were a little disappointed to note that it was flowing too quickly for the kids to make use of the dinghy that we’d brought. (There is adequate fencing to ensure that younger children cannot easily wander into the river)
There is a footpath that follows the river back towards the village; a lovely walk that takes about 30 minutes. Amongst other things the village has a very good butchers and a Co-op, so pretty-much everything you'd require was easily available.
So having pitched our tents and enjoyed a fish and chip supper in the village (pretty good and generous fish portion) we settled down for our first night’s sleep and I congratulated myself on choosing a good site for our camp
But what a difference a cold, wet and very busy Bank Holiday makes.
The first warning came when Robin expressed concern that he may have over-booked for the Jubilee weekend and instructed those in tents to park their cars in front of their pitch, not alongside it so that he could squeeze more tents into the field. It did begin to resemble terraced tenting and, because the cars were parked in front of the tents, very little room was left on this narrow field for children to play (though, to be fair, there was some space on the larger field).
Another disappointment was the shower and toilet facilities. When it is finished there will be facilities for men, facilities for women and a room with a shower, toilet and sink for the disabled. But because either the men’s or women’s facilities weren’t finished (not sure which) they had to share. As a result there were just 4 showers, 4 toilets, three sinks and two rather temperamental hand dryers available. One of the toilets didn’t have a seat, some of the push-button taps on the sinks didn’t work properly and the water coming from the hot taps was scaldingly hot.
The biggest disappointment with the facilities, however, was the showers. I’ve noted before that one thing that helps get you through a cold, wet camp is a generous, invigorating, hot shower; but showering here was a frustrating (though free) experience. They were push-button operated, which is always a little annoying. The flow of water from the fixed shower heads didn’t last long for each push and was feeble at best; but if you pushed the button too hard (ie to its limit, as you would expect to do) then only a trickle of water came out for about five seconds. It was a real juggling act to get showered and on most occasions that I was showering I listened-in to conversations of other campers moaning about the showers; two women, in particular, bemoaned how long it was taking them to rinse their hair! (A vicarious experience for me, I might add!)
Another thing that added to the inconvenience was that, although each cubicle was a good size, there was no separation between the shower area and the drying area, the floor of which would get wet. Maybe the provision of duckboards would help in this respect?
The washing up facilities were also inadequate with only one sink provided. On one occasion the queue was four deep and one group gave up and washed their stuff in the sinks in the toilet/shower room.
Most annoying of all, however, was that the campsite allows generators for those that didn’t have EHU. One reason I camp is to get away from the noise and smells of urban life and it was with dismay that a particularly smelly petrol-driven generator set up about 10-15 metres away from us; the noise was bad enough but when we were down-wind the smell was nauseating.
I’m afraid that I have to make one more negative observation. Compared to many sites I’ve been on the rules at Leekworth are minimal and certainly aren’t impressed upon guests. Though this wasn’t an issue most of the time on one night it was very much an issue. There were some very loud, raucous conversations (the one nearest us included very foul language easily audible to our children) and music was being played by one group. This was supposed to have stopped at 10. 30pm when noise should have been at “discreet” levels but in fact went on to about 11. 45pm.
On a positive note the campsite allows fires. £5 a night would get you a fire pit (a doctored Calor Gas bottle) and a bag of wood; extra bags of wood were £3. Also there are plenty of things to do and see not too far away from the campsite.
We went to Low Force, High Force and the Cow Green reservoir. We had a very good lunch and excellent ale in the Langdon Beck Hotel (en route to the reservoir).
We also had a wonderful day at Beamish which gives the kids a brilliant insight into life a century and more ago. A relatively recent addition there is a chippy designed in keeping with the early years of the 20th Century; service is slow with long queues but the genuine period coal-fired ranges with beef dripping produced the tastiest battered fish I’ve ever had! A word of warning about Beamish, however – you may wish to pre-book your tickets online, which allows you to skip what can be lengthy queues to get in.
It should be noted that Leekworth has developed greatly in the last couple of years or so and that it is a very different campsite in the quiet mid-week period than it is over a busy weekend; it really is a very tranquil and beautiful place to be mid-week.
We did feel that the large field needs breaking up with some sympathetic landscaping and, as tent-campers, we would certainly appreciate some taller hedgerows to shield us from the sight of all those caravans.
Would we go again? Well, unless the problems with the showers are addressed we wouldn’t go during a cold spell. We also wouldn’t go during a bank holiday weekend unless we learn that tents aren’t crammed in as they were. But, most of all, we would never return so long as generators are permitted.
Which is a real shame because, despite everything, we thought that Leekworth could be a really good campsite. If all the issues were addressed I’d give it 9/10 – and I’ve yet to give a 10 to any site! As it is I’m afraid that I can only give 6.

Well what can I say, absolutely superb weekend.
Leekworth site is just a couple of flat fields, with a new toilet/shower block, and reception office, but, last year when we called here, the new shower block was in the planning, but now its just about finished. Theres only the gents to complete, and the ladies and disabled toilet are beautiful.
The only one small negative point was the pot wash area. Its just one, extra large sink? But, if it was being used, we just took a bowl of hot water bank to our tent and washed up there, problem solved, but I much prefer a number of smaller sinks for everyone.
We stayed in a tent but there were caravans and motorhomes on site and EHU, and there just appeared loads of space in the middle.
So, we had lovely weather, superb site, beautiful scenery with the River Tees just behind our tent, nice walks, what more could you ask for.
There is fishing in the Tees if you like that.
If you want to visit a pub, the village is a short walk away.
I hope Robin decides to make a play area for the children, that would be nice
So if you want to visit Teesdale, visit Leekworth, you wont regret it.

Phoned for an electric hook up pitch on Saturday morning of the may day bank holiday weekend and was pleasantly surprised there was one available on a hard standing.
We had never been to this site before and it turned out to be a hidden gem. Nice flat pitches in a well looked after camping field that was professionally fenced off from the picturesque river tees guaranteeing peace of mind should you have young children in your party.
There isn`t a shop on site but Middleton in teesdale is a ten to fifteen minute walk away either along the site entrance track or along the riverside teesdale way.
We enjoyed the river walk on the afternoon and enjoyed a few drinks and the cup final in a dog friendly pub called The Bridge.
We found the site to have everything we need for a quality break. Litter free, great views, modern shower/waste disposal facilities, a good mix of motor home, caravan and tent pitches and some good walking routes for the more energetic.
The fees are very very reasonable as well. We will definitely be using this site again.

Just got back from a brilliant stay at this campsite. Owner Robin couldn't be more helpful. I enjoyed a stay here last year but there were no showers, but now the addition of a 'state of the art' toilet and shower block has made the place unbeatable for quality and value especially at £5pppn! (rate for tents). There is plenty of room and hook ups for those who like their comforts and the site is right on the banks of the river and a great spot for kids to play.
Robin is still working hard to develop the facilities further and I for one will be making this a regular stop on my travels.
Middleton in Teesdale is a lovely walk along the riverside path and there are plenty of pubs and tearooms there and enough food shops to keep you supplied with the essentials.

This is a great site on the edge of the village. It is within easy walking distance of the shops (10 mins). The site is ideal for walkers and those who like to get out into the countryside. There are plenty of both short and longer walks from the site & village. The site is adjacent to the Pennine Way which follows the river Tees through the valley.
When we were there the new toilet block was still being fitted out but the disabled one was in use. There are hardstandings available with electric and water. The only downside to the site is the single track access road with only one place wide enough to pass. That said. We will certainly be recommending the site to our friends and will be visiting again later in the year.

I found out about this campsite on a Thursday (recommended by the very friendly proprietors of a local cafe in Middleton in Teesdale). Drove down on the day and met Rob the owner who was working on the new shower block. What a really nice guy. I had no problem booking in for the next Saturday night. The campsite is in a beautiful location right by the river and only a ten minute walk into Middleton in Teesdale. The campsite itself is open and airy and has beautiful views all around. The new toilet block is almost complete and looks great. The site is situated well away from any roads and the only noise you have at night is the gurgling of the river and the odd owl hooting. The only down side to the location of the campsite is there is a very narrow lane leading to the site but Rob manages arrivals and departure times strictly to ensure there are no traffic issues.
Middleton in Teesdale is a lovely little town with very friendly people in what is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful locations in the UK. 1618 is a quirky wine bar/cafe where we were made to feel extremely welcome by Bev the owner and many of the locals who were in there. That being said, everywhere we went, everybody was extremely friendly. We stayed for one night only but left feeling like we were locals ourselves. In fact, we loved it so much that as soon as we got home today, we immediately rang Rob and booked ourselves in for the Bank Holiday in May. Highly recommended!

Just returned from a four day visit to this site and would highly recommend it. It is set in a quiet, peaceful location in the country on the Teesdale Way and right next to the river Tees. It is within ten minutes walking distance of Middleton. ( Middleton has plenty of eating places, some small shops, bank and a supermarket. ) Site owner Robin was welcoming, friendly and very helpful. It has a beautiful new shower block which is almost complete. We would highly recommend this site and hope to be back in the future.

Had a ride out to Leekworth this weekend, to speak to Robin about an Easter booking and also to be honest to have a nosey at the new toilet block!
Stuning location in rural Teeside, even on a frosty winters day probably even more so pity it's not open all year though.
The new toilet block is well under way, the outside is all complete in stonework. Robin has 4 showers in each the male and female toilets and one in the disabled. A camp kitchen whoop, whoop is also underway.
He is also talking about building a playpark for the kids, fantastic. Though I'm not sure our kids will need it as they are usually to be found in the near by woods, river or even feeding the on site ducks.
Can't wait to visit at Easter, may also have to have a cheeky weekend in March as this site is fab.

We were looking for an escape to the countryside in Teesdale. Leekworth Caravan Park caught our eye on its website as the sort of place we might appreciate. From our first contact, arrival and stay, site owner, Robin, was welcoming, friendly and helpful.
The website reflected the nature of the place well- just the the sort we like - in the country -with good rural and river views but near enough for us to walk into the village by a variety of routes.
Even when the elevating roof of our campervan was stuck in the upper position, Robin was able to find someone who could help us.
We look forward to a return visit when the new facilities and showerblock (already started) are up and running
