Our stay at Lanefoot Farm had an ominous start. I had booked not weeks but months beforehand and had specified that we wanted to camp on the Meadow Field. I had reiterated this several times through email correspondence and each time received confirmation. However, on our arrival we were directed to the Main Field. We weren’t happy and no pitch was suitable. So we strolled over to the Meadow Field and spotted a space that was much more to our liking and asked to pitch there. There was an awkward few moments as Gareth was clearly reluctant to let us pitch there (he wanted to save it for an EHU customer) but we emphasised that we had booked such a pitch since February and he eventually relented. Later, Gareth admitted that they had overbooked (he put it down to the fact that they are still learning the ropes) and, indeed, the site was far too full over the spring bank holiday and following half term week.

Anyway, on with the review!

As I understand things there was a campsite at Lanefoot Farm for many years until the previous owner died a few years ago. Gareth and Helen took over less than three years ago and started up the campsite again. There are two main camping areas: the Meadow Field and the Main Field. The Main Field is a quite large, open field with a few hard standings around part of the perimeter. With the exception of the hard standings there are no marked pitches and it seems to be very much a case of “go and find a pitch”. Not all the field is equally useable as some areas are not level and, when we were there, some areas were very soft. The Main Field does, however, have the best, clearest views of the valley including Dodd and Skiddaw. There is more landscaping in the Meadow Field which is natural and mature with plenty of wildlife (including a Mistle Thrush that nested in a tree above our tent and we enjoyed watching its young fledge). There is a stream that runs through the field which attracted the children but check it before allowing your children play in it as there is some glass and rusty metal in there.

Compared to some of the campsites I have stayed at the facilities are somewhat rustic. I counted two toilets, one urinal and one shower for men and, in so far as I could tell, there were similar facilities for women (though minus the urinal, I assume). The shower is in a room without any real ventilation and so gets very steamy. However, it is free to use, has a strong flow and, since it is a power shower, the hot water is available 24/7. There were also two sinks, at a back-achingly low level, for washing up. The shower and washing up facilities proved inadequate for the number of campers, with queues forming at the usual times. I believe that there are plans for new facilities.

As others have mentioned, one positive feature of the site is that campfires are allowed. For £4 you get a simple brazier (an old car wheel to keep the fire off the grass) and a bundle of wood and kindle. Gareth would go around on his tractor and trailer, carting the wood for the fires, and he would be followed by excited groups of children, Pied Piper-esque.

There is a small but well-stocked shop that provides many essentials as well as sausages, eggs and black pudding for breakfast and packets of marsh-mellows to toast over the campfire in the evening. There is a bell just outside the shop which you ring for service if no one is on duty in the shop.

As always I asked our children what they liked and disliked about the campsite. They appreciated the scenic location and the fact that we didn’t have to travel very far to find lots of things to do and see off-site. For most of them the facilities were not an issue. But one thing that they did mention was that, compared to other campsites we’ve been to, there was not enough space (even on the Main Field) to play games such as football, catch, etc. Without getting under the feet of other campers. I don’t know what it is like at other times but while we were there the site was far too full. The EHU campers that arrived shortly after us had to squeeze in their tent; a bedroom pod of their Diablo was less than a couple of metres from our tent – but at least they were a really pleasant family. Campsites that cram in the punters can and should lose good will and, eventually, custom.

Despite the downsides I found myself really liking Lanefoot Farm, as did our children. A big part of this was Helen and Gareth; they have a genuinely warm, friendly and laid-back attitude to running their campsite. The views across the valley towards Skiddaw are beautiful and there is so much to do and see in the Lakes. During our camp we went over the other side of the valley to Dodd twice, once to get views of the ospreys nesting (people from the R.S.P.B. Were there with information, telescopes, etc.) and the second time to hike up to Dodd Summit (including our seven-year-old) which rewarded us with wonderfully commanding views of Keswick, Derwent Water and Basenthwaite. We also went to Tarn Hows, Grizedale and Great Langdale; beautiful locations all within a forty minute or so drive of the campsite.

In some ways Lanefoot Farm is a work in progress and there is still some work that needs to be done. If you like your creature comforts and commercial sites with playgrounds for the kids and a bar for the grown-ups then this site is not for you. But if it did have those things then it would not be for me. I spoke to people who have returned to this site several times and I would also go again, though I would either avoid the busiest times of the season or check future reviews to see whether the over-booking was a one-off.

There’s a sign at the entrance to Lanefoot farm which reads “Caution Free Range Children”. And on this campsite the children are free. Free to have fun, free to run around and fill their lungs with fresh air, free to play ball games and play in the stream that cuts the campsite in two. Yes the facilities are basic but when the kids are enjoying themselves, then the parents and grandparents can relax and enjoy their holiday too. Highly recommended will visit again.

Stayed here for six nights during Keswick Mountain festival. Weather was nice at first then turned to rain rain rain! We had a good week though and got out and about.

Campsite location great for Keswick, winlatter forest etc. Is a working farm so animals add to the charm. Campfires allowed so another bonus - supplied by owner Gareth. At least one pub within walking distance. Campsite has little shop that sells essentials - marshmallows for the fire. Washing up facilities and I think there was a plug in the shower room for hairdryer! Also has drying area for wet boots & jackets.

Owner Gareth and his young family always on hand, very friendly & caring, offering local info & asking how your day was without being intrusive.

Mixture of seasonal pitches & tourers. 3 camping areas- Main field which is sloping, meadow field which has a wild feel to it, and 3rd field in between which we camped in because it was flat.

Disagree with negative comments about wash facilities - I found they were totally adequate, and clean. This is a working farm and you only need the basics - if you want massive shower blocks & fancy washing up areas then maybe visit one of the other holiday parks in the area. It depends what you are looking for.

All other campers were quiet & respectful, peaceful after hours.

My only small disappointment with this visit was that we had booked pretty far in advance and requested the meadow field, & had a response to say that would be fine. When we arrived, there wasn't really anywhere suitable to camp, only very sloping areas, not an option for me. Which is why we ended up in the middle field, it was nice & flat but right next to the road. That's camping for you I suppose.

Well worth a visit, all in all a great holiday & ticked most of my boxes for an ideal campsite! :-)

Arrived to find that our booking that we made three months ago hadn't been written down, but not to panic because Gareth found us a pitch with hook up no problem. A sign as you drive in says sorry no groups, but it didn't take long to clock our neighbours! Drunk loud and full of attitude, wouldn't of minded but they were grown men! Gareth had to send them packing after a noisy night.

Site started to fill up but luckily we didn't have to queue for showers as we went later in the afternoon after a days walking.

Short walk to pub and there's a nice walk into Keswick which means you don't have to walk on main road.

The field we camped on got really water logged after a few days of rain, mucho mud and very soggy wood that would not burn! noticed a few people took axes with them to make lighting the fires easier, will remember that for next time.

Nice site and location, basic facilities which really doesn't reflect with the price that we paid for seven people for seven nights, but I guess you pay for the beautiful surroundings. 8/10

This is a beautifully situated site with fantastic views in all directions. The site is split into two sections, the meadow area, which is a mixed area of trees and long grass, and a large open, and mostly sloping, field.

The site has a very relaxed feel about it with few rules, no demarcated pitches, and few facilities.

We found the owners genuinely helpful and laid back.

We stayed over the May Bank Holiday week and found the site busy. Initially we were directed toward the open field. A slight problem here was that because of the slope and the lack of marked pitches most tents were crammed very close to each other in the flatter sections.

Another problem with the field was that the open field was also the area that the kids played football in. Probably could do with a designated area for balls games.

After moving to the meadow area the experience was very different. Lovely, laid back camping surrounded by considerate, friendly, and happy people. I think this area would be difficult to crowd because of the layout, and certainly doesn’t lend itself to the kind of circling of tents to crate a communal drinking space that the large group managed in the open field.

As mentioned, only one shower and two toilets per gender. Be prepared to wait a while when the site’s busy.

We also stayed at this site just before the late May bank holiday and thought it was absolutely lovely.

It was very quiet when we arrived - it felt that we were the only people there, although it started to fill up on the Friday.

Despite the extra people we never had to queue for the facilities, and they were always clean. The antibac soap was also a nice touch. We didn't feel they needed updating either - the showers were nicely tiled etc.

The owners were absolutely lovely and happy to help. We didn't have a campfire but it was great knowing they were an option.

We wouldn't hesitate to go back, its the type of site we absolutely love.

 LOCATION

Very easy to get too as its just off the A66. Excellent views of the Skiddaw range to one side of the site, and Whinlatter forest to the other. Also only 5 mins drive from Keswick.

A quiet road leads right from the site into the village of Braithwaite (approx 1 mile), where there is a couple of pubs and a village store

SITE

Pitches good but not set, we had plenty of space (until the bank hol arrived, when the owners tried to cram probably way too many people in)

As mentioned in other reviews, the toilets/showers are very basic, and with only 1 shower for women and 1 for men, they could get busy at times.

This is a working farm and there are chickens roaming freely about, which is a nice touch although watch out for your biscuits!

There is a basic shop where you can get provisions, though it doesnt have any fixed opening times.

It rained a lot during our stay, but the ground didn't get muddy, I think the owners have recently dug drainage ditches

All in all I would recommend this site if you don't require home comforts

Well arrived here on Friday tea-time,kids all excited and my heart dropped. Basic sites are what I like but there's basic and there's basic.

The bathroom facilities were very clean but dated, there was only 1 shower for each gender. The dihwashing facilities were clean but in a little shack.

BUT and it is a big but the owner, Gareth is such a lovely man and great with kids the site grew on me so much! he had my daughter help him out the horse away at night and feeding the chickens. Her highlight was the tractor rides around the site. He made the stay great fun. There's a small stream running through the site which the kids loved plying in too.

The site was perfectly place with fantastic views. Campfires at night were brilliant, made such a difference. You buy the wood from gareth at £4 a load and you get a tyre hub and away you go, fab!

When I arrived I wanted to leave now I would go again! My youngest cried the morning we were leaving and is desperate to get back!

Stayed on this site for 2 nights, location fantastic, easy walk or cycle ride into Keswick. Not many toilets or showers on site so had to queue pretty much every time, but that wouldn't put me off staying there again.N
ice pub just down the road which makes a nice stop off when walking back from keswick.

The scenery was beautiful, surrounded by Skiddaw and other lovely mountains. The owner Gareth was very welcoming and helpful.

Showers were hot and I believe more facilities will be opening soon. You are also allowed a campfire that adds atmosphere to the experience. A small tuckshop is available selling own grown chicken eggs. The field adds much more fun to it with chickens and ducks roaming around.

Highly recommended! There is a little traffic noise but does calm down and not a major issue. Only 2 miles from Keswick (one straight road, 5 mins drive)

During my stay it rained all night but in the morning the field was quite dry. You can choose various locations to camp out throughout the site. Electrical points available.
