Buy ROCK PEGS AND HAMMER, I cannot emphasis enough that you will need these. Any other pegs, reach about an inch into the ground, then hit stone.

Beautiful site, camping in the woods. Very, back to nature. nice and quiet, even during this week. Toilet block and showers very clean. All pitches have hook up.

A good walk with children to lake and a very long walk with children into Coniston. Childrens play area can be seen from almost all the pitches.

Very safe for the children to ride bikes around.

Chip van on site certain nights!

 September 2004
We arrived on Sat.18th around 4pm and the site although busy, didn't feel 'full' due to the size of the pitches and the way they are laid out as small groups in 'glades'. Usual warm welcome from the team of wardens and we went off to find our pitch - not pre-designated, just 'find somewhere you like and set up'. We found a nice spot and as it appeared dry and reasonably level we set up the caravan etc.. Not too many empty pitches left at that time.

Visited the nearest shower block - good + clean as usual(10 toilets, 4 showers, 2'privacy cubicles' + @6sinks for each sex per block). We decided to walk down the path from the site to the lakeside. Got through the gate and it started 'tipping down', cats and dogs was a bit of an understatement! LOL!!! Never mind back to van and snug in awning.

Sunday, it rained most of day, and although we expected rain - well you don't get lakes without rainfall - it did seem rather a lot! Unfortunately we also noticed that our 'nice pitch' which had appeared dry was now acting as a 'run off' from the road and although the awning was dry inside there was a very wet and 'soft' part inside the door. :-(
Not a problem, wasn't causing danger to electrics - fan heater etc. put that safely out of reach on top of table, so decided to wait until following day to see what happened.
Well, it wasn't quite so wet overnight - more of a drizzle than a downpour - and the pitch looked like a river was running through it by morning so we went and mentioned it to the wardens.
'No problem, feel free to move and let us know where you are once you're settled.' So we did.
Moved into next glade from pitch 218 to 221 and it was great!

We were unfortunate to have been visiting at a time when the wardens said there'd been about 6-7weeks of rain with very little let-up. During the time we spent on our second pitch we had no problems with surface water and noticed that very few of the other pitches that we regularly passed had a problem either. The wardens were also going around checking that there was enough gravel etc., and topping up the pitches that needed it.

Obviously due to the fact that the site is situated in a lovely woodland and is on the sloping side of the Coniston valley there will always be water flowing downhill to the lake, so be aware when you look for your pitch.
Otherwise this is a lovely site. Couple of small 'play areas' suitably 'floored' with plenty of bark and it was great to see the children enjoying themselves when it was dry enough to go out.
There were dry times, infact we had a couple of lovely days, but every time Ade and I walked through the gate to the lakeside it started to rain! I swear he had a secret arrangement with 'someone'!!! LOL!!!!

It was very quiet between Monday and Fridays, filling up from Friday evening until Sunday on both weekends we were there.
For the most though we were more likely to see the Red Squirrels, loads of birds and a Woodpecker than many other campers.
All in all we had a lovely time at this site and will go there again if we visit the area.

Best site we've visited! Lovely well spaced out pitches in woodland glades, great facilities, lovely staff. The best thing about this site is its proximity to Lake Coniston, and the short walk (around half an hour) into Coniston village. Can't wait to go back.

Summary: nice quiet campsite, with very good facilites, staff and location. Definitely suitable for families 10/10

This is a long post, but please read!!

===================

This site is a Caravan Club site. I'm not a member but non-members can still go. I'm a very wary person when it comes to booking campsites, so trusted this because it is a Caravan Club Site.

I'm glad I did trust it! I had the most amazing time! Me and my boyfriend went there with my tent on Saturday 30th August. We were greeted by a friendly and extremely helpful Warden, which is nice after a long drive. Although we were told that the tent area was shut (due to the toilet block being repaired I think), and that we'd be amongst the Caravans, this wasn't a problem. The pitches were mainly suitable for caravans/motorhomes etc, but there were a few with big grassy patches suitable for my tent (it's a very big tent too!). Ground was hard, but not a problem with a good mallet and some rock pegs! Our pitch was very spacious, we didn't feel like we were imposing on anyone, everyone had substantial space to themselves.

At the entrance to the site, there's a shop, (sells basics, like gas canisters, icecream, tent pegs, potatoes, some tinned food etc. Also rents ice packs [£1 returnable deposit]), an information room and a reception. The Wardens were really nice, one helped me and my boyfriend find bike hire companies and routes. The campsite also provides its own recommended routes, both cycling and walking. We used one, a 15 mile cycle around Coniston Water...beware of the hills near Brantwood House!

The site is split up into sections, for example, we were in the Elterwater section. Others are Derwent Water, Windermere..etc etc. Wherever you are on the site, there's always a toilet/shower block nearby. I was pleasantly surprised by the blocks actually, showers were modern (and had hot water too!), toilets were clean, mops/cloths were there to wipe up after you used the sink/shower. Free hair dryers were provided too, great for us campers! Next to the toilets blocks are washing facilities for plates, cutlery, food etc. Again, very clean and spacious. Rubbish bins, Water taps, waste disposal units were situated all over the site, so you never had to walk far..great when you get back from a long country walk! There wasn't a 'rubbish' smell, and no wasps in sight!

Me and my boyfriend are aged 18 and 19, and found the site brilliant for our age. If you want peace and quiet, then this is the place to be, so forget the loud music - if you want this, go elsewhere. There were lots of older people there, as well as older families, younger families, especially, could easily have a great time at this site. There are lots of play areas for the kids, there's the lake at the bottom of the site, there's a Squirrel Nature Trail [which my boyfriend wouldn't let me do :( ], and because of the slow speed limit of the campsite, and one-way system, it's suitable for riding bikes round.

The best bit I found about the site was the fact that it seemed so 'natural'. By this, I mean that it didn't feel touched by tourists, it all felt like you were simply camping in the woods, not a campsite! For example, I saw rabbits hopping around on the empty pitches, it was really nice to see!

Coniston is only a few miles drive away from places like Ambleside and Windermere, but if you're like me and don't want to drive, then Coniston has a lot to do. Park Coppice is only 1.5 miles (maximum) to the village centre, so you're close to everything you need really. It's a lovely walk to the village (can walk on the road, but best, and safer, if you use public footpaths in fields), so you don't notice the distance. Just be wary of the hill coming back to the campsite if you're on a bike...if you've got tired legs, walk it!

I'll definitely be coming back here, whether it be quite soon, or an advanced holiday decision for next year, I will be back! I'd easily give it 10/10.
