I read the reviews of this campsite and was a little disappointed but I thought some people may have just been too fussy. As I was just camping for a weekend with a mate I was not too worried about noise, etc so we decided to give it a go (mainly because it said the site allowed campfires).
On arrival at the site all my fears were realised, and to say that this site was untidy would have been an understatement. There was rubbish strewn all over the site and it looked as if some of the "campers" were actually living there full time. The roads on the site were impassable unless you were in a tractor. We scouted around the whole site looking for a suitable pitch as the site is quite large we thought there might be at least one decent area, how wrong I was.
DO NOT visit this site if you have a young family or are looking for a peaceful nice weekend. It was so bad we decided to leave immediately. This is by far the worst campsite I have ever visited. No shop facilities and the playground area (I think that is pushing it a bit as a description ) was a hazard. Trust your instincts and believe me first impressions are usually right.
I think the owner must make enough money to improve facilities to a more acceptable standard which is to be expected by campers nowadays. Its a real shame because the area is lovely with many interesting places to visit and if brought up to standard I think this site could be a goldmine.
If I have learnt one thing it is to trust the fellow members reviews. I camp regularly with my family and with mates so I think I have visited enough campsites to know what should be acceptable on today's modern campsites.

If it had not been for the good company I was with the weekend spent at this site would have been disastrous. The facilities are appalling and are NEVER cleaned. The lower fields are little more than a gypsy camp and the rule for this site is that anything goes. You can be as loud as you like (and most residents were) because no-one cares - you can let your dogs roam free because no-one cares. Luckily for us we found a very remote spot - about a 15 minute walk from the front gate which was well away from main campers and suited us well. We were also fortunately enough to have a few portaloos between us, otherwise we would probably have left immediately we got there. However, despite all the downsides to this camp (and there are many), if we were guaranteed the same spot again we would definitely go again as we would be better prepared with toilet and water facilities. One real bonus is the log fires.

We read all the reviews on this site before we decided to take the plunge. So you could say we went in with our eyes open. We arrived on a Friday afternoon about 1 o'clock and set up. Dinner at the pub and then back to the tent, in the few hours we were away the site had got very busy and had started to get noisy, (loud music) but I have been at large holiday camps where it has been noisier.
Yes the showers were grim and the toilets were grimmer, but again I have paid a lot more to stay in so called holiday parks where the facilities were not much better. Friday Saturday and Sunday night the music did go on very late but it was not intrusive, besides my nine year old must have disturbed their lie ins with his playing at 7 am.
We will definitely be going there again as we all had a great time for £12.50 a night. Well worth it if you like having a fun time breathing in fresh smoke filled air, great.

Rough and ready. Went with a bunch of friends and assorted children. There was a mini sort-of-pub-rock festival going on so it was busy. The loos were atrocious; just short of Glastonbury standard. Nice to have campfire and no-one telling you to be quiet after midnight. Indeed, at 3am Chris Difford from Squeeze was playing as I was trying to crash out. Wasn't expecting that. Lots of dogs and random yoof. But all behaved themselves Went to Bodiam Castle. Shockingly expensive and didn't bother going in Would go again as it is very relaxed. A bit of sun, your mates, a campfire what more could you want? Oh, yes. Some loo roll in the toilets

Other reviews are accurate, it's a mixed bag but for me was worth the visit. Very large fields for camping, it seemed full on the Saturday night we arrived but there was plenty of space to fit in, in fact you could have been as remote as you liked. I didn't find a problem with the residents, rather the football playing weekender family nearby were a pain, but I did fall asleep to the gentle wafting of trance music. Lovely walk to the pub and castle along a river, safe for kids, but its the usual National Trust nightmare of admission prices and overpriced snacks. Sunday the place was deserted and very peaceful. What really annoys me though is that its one of those campsites where the owner does nothing beyond the absolute essentials in terms of facilities and aesthetics, the loos are crap (ho ho) and needed cleaning, had to queue, only one filthy wash basin - no excuse for that, and the whole place was run down. Considering they probably took £5000 cash in 1 weekend they could spend a bit cleaning painting and tiling - it's just a cowshed.

Nothing like the idyllic setting as made out by their rather impressive website. No one about to enforce rules like dogs on leads and no loud music after 11pm etc. Lots of dogs off leads and not always friendly. My autistic son was petrified. And the music went on till about 3am.The children's play area was taken over by the "resident" children who did nothing but bully the "holiday" children. The toilets were OK, but didn't stay long enough to see them really. We set our tent up at 5pm.were gone by 10am the next day. Very stressful and very disappointed!

I will give you the bad bits first: On arrival we could recognise instantly that there were permanent residents on this site that had sort of taken over many of the fields and hook ups. They took absolutely no notice of the "Dogs must be on a lead" rule and let their Jack Russells roam freely to annoy your dogs and eat their food. We were also woken up at 6am by one lad doing wheel spins in a truck which was really frightening. The new toilet block was basic but adequate but by Sunday was absolutely disgusting. No cleaning had been done all weekend! Now for the good bits: This site is really relaxed and as everyone has pointed out the camp fire bit is amazing and real good fun for the kids. The site is level and in a good location with a lovely walk to the pub where they serve good food. I loved this site and would go back if the farmer would move his permanent residents into a field, preferably 5 miles away!

We went after reading the reviews and it was just as everyone said, very basic and cheap, nice helpful farmer who sold us logs for the fire (wonderful!) and gorgeous walk down to Bodiam Castle (though with 4 under 5s it was more like an hours gentle walk). We were also there for the Hope Festival, which was an added bonus as most of the crowd were families or largely well behaved young people (apart from drunken early morning returns to tents. least said about that the better). Festival was VERY noisy and went on all night but easy enough to sleep through if you weren't camped right on top of it. However, and this is a big however, the toilets (very rudimentary to begin with) just simply could not cope with the large influx of people and were absolutely disgusting for the two days of the festival. The showers, a tiny lukewarm dribble for most of the day anyway were too revolting to even contemplate once the festival started. We were very smelly by the time we got home. Despite it all, we are considering returning next year - are we mad???

Went here in October with 3 boys age 8 and 3 dads. Very relaxed, running hot and cold water, you can have a camp fire and Bodiam castle is a very pleasant 15-20min walk along the river (there's a pub there as well). For £5 each its had to criticise

Visited this site over August Bank Holiday, got the feeling they were not expecting the crowds of people, tents were everywhere both fields were full over spilled into wherever anyone could get a tent up. Brilliant atmosphere everyone was very friendly. Kids ran wild, rope swing over the river a real plus. Camp fire a must. You defiantly need transport, 3 miles to nearest shop. Good base for visiting Hastings and surrounding area.
Facilities were awful, I was expecting basic however these were substandard in terms of cleanliness and number, no where near enough to cope with the numbers on site, hot water ran out early,. If these were improved I would recommend site 150%. Will be calling in on site again but whether we stay will depend very much on the facilities being upgraded.
