Very nice site, definitely not flat, (eventually found a flattish pitch) would recommend the far field for a flat pitch, just a 300yd walk back to the showers / toilets etc.
Only 2 complaints, 20p for a 3min shower, I put 20p in the slot, by the time I had undressed and got temp right the shower went off leaving me covered in shower gel / freezing and no more 20p,s on me! other complaint is the 10p for washing up, by the time the cold water got hot the water ran out? leaving half a sink of cold water to wash pots!
I would rather pay more per night and have unlimited hot water, showers etc spotless, owner very cheerful, always busy. 2 nice pubs in village and a decent chippy.
Good site let down by the hot water issues.

Went over Bank Holiday weekend for 3 nights. The site was fully booked so we had pre booked a month before and got one of last pitches. Apparently they could have booked it many times over with the calls they got in the days before. (hint to pre-book for bank holidays!)
There was a field for caravans and 2 for tents after the reception area. Limited ehu for tents but we managed without for this break but would usually prefer the option. We were in the far field which was really flat and the pitches were in good condition. The field was full but quite peaceful- as the name serenity suggests- there was little noise with predominantly adults. There were children as well but not many as the owners prefer adults which is fair enough as you would be unlikely to book if you were expecting a play area and goal posts, this is not what this site is about. The atmosphere was relaxed.
The owners are friendly and almost always on hand, their house was nearby at the entrance. The site in general is clean, well laid out, planted areas are bright, there is a dovecote (with doves) near the reception.
The showers were stretched in the morning due to the number of campers but if you went out of the morning rush there was no problem and for 20p the showers were hot and lasted long enough for a decent shower. There were 2 showers and 3 toilets for men and the same for women.
The washing up facilities are opposite the toilet block and have 3 sinks, a washing machine, dryer and fridge freezer. Again slightly stretched for the Bank Holiday but as we were on holiday and in no great rush this was no problem.
Some good walks right from the site took you to Staithes and Runswick Bay and through woods and along the cliffs on the Cleveland Way. Great! These places had some decent pubs and fantastic views and in my opinion define this area, a gem on the East Coast.
Hinderwell itself has 2 pubs, The Badger Hounds and The Brown Cow. The Brown Cow was more dog friendly which was important for us and the meals were well priced and owners welcoming. We could not find room in the other pub so cannot comment on this pub. The Bistro called Salutz was good, nice food and modern but more expensive and booking was essential if a weekend. Also there is a fish shop, small post office and general store and a butchers.
Buses run to Whitby about 9 miles away every hour or so.
We would return and will keep this as one of our favoured holiday destinations.

Owners are very helpful. The site is very clean and the toilet / washing facilities are immaculate, although only two men's showers for a large site could be a problem when it's busy.
The lower field is very flat but the upper field, nearest the facilities, is very long and thin. It was a medieval strip-farming site and down the whole length of the field there are large 'furrows' which are about 8 feet across. This means that if you've a medium size tent you will end up straddling a ridge and a trough, which is less than ideal.
Just outside the camp is a Bistro restaurant which sells wonderful food. It's dearer than the pubs but the food is excellent and well worth visiting as a treat - we liked it so much we went 3 times!
The site is ideally situated for visiting coastal villages and also the N. Yorks moors. One quibble would be that charging 10p for hot water to wash dishes seems to be taking the mickey. Another would be that £6.50 per person per night is rather steep for a site with no real facilities. Yes, the toilet block is very clean but loses marks for only having two showers. The hot water for washing and the toilets are 'free' but most things are 20p [10p to wash dishes, £2 for the washing machine, etc]. Use of the fridge and microwave is free, which is helpful. Over a week, it all adds up - especially when the site fees are £6.50 pppn

This is one of the best sites I've visited. The owners are very friendly and helpful.
The location is approximately 8 miles from Whitby and in a central village location which means you can easily walk to local pubs and shops. It's also a short walk to Runswick Bay (steep walk back up the hill) which is a lovely beech. Runswick bay is also where you can access the Cleveland way footpath. Staiths is a short car journey which again is a lovely beach and a pretty village.
There are 2 tent fields which are both well sheltered and with short grass. The one nearer the facilities has a slight slope and undulates which would be fine for smaller footprints whilst the one further away is flatter which was better for our Andorra, in fact it was the flattest pitch we've ever had :)
The facilities are spotless and as with all sites if you pick your time right you don't have to queue for the showers. There are 2 showers, 3 toilets and washing facilities. The showers are on a 20p meter and the hot water for washing up is on a 10p meter. The washing up area is fantastic, there is a fridge freezer, microwave, washing machine, tumble & spin dryer, iron and food preparation area and again it's spotless.
What made this site for us was the quietness due to it's location but mainly due to the lack of children. We will be definitely be returning here again.

Pat and Nigel couldn't have been more helpful, nothing was too much for them. I even left a for sale sign on my FC and they were directing people to it. I also spent a night away from the site and they looked after the FC. I had a little bit of trouble with a person down in Runswick Bay and again Pat and Nigel were really helpful.
As already said the amenities are really well looked after and spotlessly clean. The area is absolutely beautiful with easy access to all the local villages/towns You can walk/cycle/drive/take public transport in any direction you want and you will find something to do.
There is a pub right outside the gate that serves food turn right and there is a chippy and another pub. If you like fish and chips you must go to Whitby for the best in England IMHO

It is miles (I mean 300yds at least), to the facilities when, like us, you are pitched in the last field. However, my wife and I never expect everything to be perfect and the fact that this was a wonderful site made up for the distance to the loos. The owners are lovely and friendly and the toilets and showers are immaculate. It is in the village and close to the two pubs.
Although a fairly large site, each field is partitioned by trees and therefore quite quiet and private. We were struggling with pitching our Monty-6 for the first time and a very kind camper came to our aid. However, on the Saturday of our weekend stay a young couple spent 5 hours trying to erect their tent with the help of virtually everyone in the site but had to give up at 9.30pm. It was borrowed and they didn't even know whether it was a dome, ridge or high-rise tent :(. Although had to give up, they came back with a new tent the next morning and hed it pitched in 30mins. That's admirable!:)
There is a tent field close to the facilities which have hook-up facilities and next time we would choose that. There definitely will be a next time. A beautiful site 20 minutes from Whitby, 5 mins from Runswick Bay and 10 mins from Staithes! Very Highly recommended but families are not encouraged and hence no play areas but also little noise for us aging old adults.

Hi we have just come back from a short break at this site & my advice to anyone who is thinking of going is GO GO GO. What you read on the website is what you get. The site is excellent , plenty of room, good facilities, no hassle at all. Hinderwell village is quite quiet allthough the 2 pubs are worth a visit, we had 2 meals in the badgers & they were excellent value for money (fresh food no microwaves here) most main meals come in at around £7.00, apparently a new owner has recently taken over & as long as they keep things as they are now I would recommend this pub to all both old & young. Whitby is only 15 mins drive away & there is ample buses if that's your mode of transport.

We joined friends to stay for just one Saturday night. We found the facilities to be clean and the owners to be very friendly. The pitch for our tent was more or less flat and free from rocks and stones. The two local pubs were fine - had a steak in the Brown Cow which was nice. The real winning aspect of this campsite is the mostly adults policy. This meant I wasn't woken at 7AM by screaming children and could have a lie in till about 9ish. Also there was nobody keeping us awake all night partying. If you have young children this site isn't for people like you - it's for people like me! Will definitely go back.

We have been to this site about 4 times now. It is fantastic. The staff are brilliant, very friendly and helpful. Very generous pitch size and really quiet peaceful location.
The facilities are spot on. Toilets and showers well maintained always clean and with a supply of toilet paper. Music playing in there is a lovely touch.
The fridge and freezer in the kitchen area is a great addition when camping as you can keep your meat for the bbqs. Also bricks are provided if you use disposable bbqs there is also a bbq area available which we always camp near.
Great surrounding location for days out, not far from local coop store and the village has 2 great pubs and restaurants.
I think I will be returning here for years to come has become a bank holiday tradition.

Really friendly owners and fabulous facilities. Everything was clean and tidy and regularly inspected. Had pitch not too far from the amenities so did not have too far to walk.
Chickens roam freely around and enjoyed the rest of our supper cheekily eating it out of the pan we had left to cool
Weather was so lovely we stayed an extra day. Very convenient for Staithes and Runswick Bay - also the Cleveland Way -lots of walks. Also got the number 5 Bus to Whitby for an evening out - really good location.
