Friendly and welcoming staff. Clean and ample facilities; but some of the toilets being in a different building from the showers is not very handy, and coin operated showers are a absolute no-no these days. Nice playground for little children, shop, free wifi (but faltering at times). All in all somewhat isolated.

New to camping but really enjoyed this site. Friendly booking and welcome. They were happy for us to pitch 10am on Saturday and stay all of Sunday. Toilets/shower etc nice and clean. Kids enjoyed the playground. Pigs and horses live on the site which the kids really liked. It was nice and peaceful, I didn't hear any noise from the nearly quarries at all.
Would definitely go again.

Nice site. Booking in was easy with a friendly welcome. We arrived on a wet bank holiday weekend, couldn't get traction in the mud to site our van, but the site owner got his tractor and helped us into our pitch.
The toilet block was nice and clean despite the heavy rain, plenty of hot water, although the hand dryers blew cold air. Dishwashing facilities also looked good even though we didn't use them. The children enjoyed the outdoor play equipment once the rain stopped, and spent most of their time on site there. There's also a shop on-site selling essentials, which we found useful.
Lots of leaflets in reception with suggestions of places to go, but there's nothing really within walking distance of the site. We had a local takeaway deliver to the site on one night, which was handy.
Overall, good site. Friendly owners, good facilities, peaceful area. Would definitely use again.

This was my first camping trip with kids (6 and 4) and we couldn't have picked a better one. The location is great, a short drive to Bakewell and the Monsall Trail, Matlock, Ashbourne, Dovedale etc. Facilities are also really good; spotlessly clean and warm showers, basic but good value shop open for a few hours a day; great kids play park too, close to the pitches so you can keep an eye on them but let them think they're running free! Some of the pitches are on very sloping ground so it's worth getting there early to secure a flat pitch. Also the large size of the fields lends itself to large groups pitching next to each other, mainly families so no late nights, but this isn't a secluded site where 'it gets late early round here'! A note on the quarry: yes you can here it. Occasionally. And you soon filter or out. All in all, a great site and we'll be back.

My family (2 children 8 and 11) recently spent a very pleasant 6 night stay at Middle Hills. I arrive on crutches and the owners especially Liz could not have been more lovely and helpful. The fields are large though slightly sloped in places but you are allowed to pitch wherever you please so it is easily possible to find a flat pitch. The playground is fantastic and both by children loved it. The toilet blocks are very adequate though do get crowded at busy times. There is a small shop which sells essentials, a few sweets and games for the children at very reasonable prices. The area has so many near by attractions that you are spoilt for choice. Some of the other reviews refer to noise from the quarry, I was slightly worried about this as I am a very light sleeper so always travel with ear plugs, however I did not need to use them as the noise was like a constant humming/buzzing throughout the night which I did not find troublesome at all. We will definitely return to this site at sometime in the future.

Visited over the first weekend in August and the site wasn, t quite what we were expecting. The listing on UK campsites suggests that the site is for 5 caravans and tents if space permitting. By Friday night all 3 areas were full to the brim with numerous caravans, motorhomes and tents.
Having said that we found the facilities to be very good and adequate most of the time. Mornings were particularly busy with queues for all facilities.
The pub at the bottom of the drive has been converted to a house so we had a 4 mile drive to Cromford but the meals & service at 'The Boat' made up for that.
The site itself was clean and tidy with plenty to interest the children, who had a great time.
Unfortunately the Ynot festival was on at the time and the loud music kept us awake until 2:30 but that was out of the control of the campsite.
There was also the issue that a number of dog owners seem to think that site rules don't apply to them and allowed their dogs to roam freely.
We will probably visit the site again but may make it outside the school holidays!

There is a small on site shop which stocks all the basics you might need. Fridge and freezers are available. Good pot washing facilities. Warm and clean toilets and showers. Pitch anywhere instead of in allotted spaces, meaning you can choose a family area or a quieter area towards the back of the top field. Dog friendly with a great dog walking field. Quiet by about 10. 30. The Ynot festival was on but the campsite was not affected by late night noise. We really enjoyed our stay and will be back.

The site was quite easy to find with a decent access road. On arrival you pitch where you want which is great if you are part of a group but not so ideal if you get surrounded by a group. The site was very busy in the period we were there and there was a bit of a free-for-all.
There is a decent playground for older children which ours loved. It's so nice to see inventive equipment; tyre tunnels etc. They children also loved the pigs.
The facilities were clean and well kept - even on the very wet weekend that we stayed. However, the children struggled to reach the taps which were too stiff for them to use properly (they are 8 and 6 so not 'too' little). Showers are provided at 20p/minute but I was lucky and got about 8mins of hot water for my 20p! others were not so lucky and had less time in a cold shower than they had paid for.
Although the campsite, due to it's relaxed atmosphere, is pleasant there are no rules about noise (other than a vague suggestion that people are considerate). We did find the site noisy and this spoilt the weekend for us rather. I know this is entirely dependant on the neighbours you get but perhaps something more specific such as 'talk quietly, no music after 10' would be helpful and is fairly common on sites such as this.

Great family campsite - owners are lovely helpful people and Will and Alice were firm playmates with my toddlers, Luca and. - Big play area for kids - free use of fridges and freezers - payable showers and loos. (standard but perfectly adequate after all you are camping!)
Can take your own hairdryer and straighteners - always plenty of loo roll. Drinking water points and lots of recycling bins.
4 washing up sinks - at peak times there's a queue - shop open for anything forgotten.
Very relaxed site, and great for Matlock Bath and other tourist places. Have stayed twice now and will defo go again!
Site is mostly hilly, and it has 3 ablution blocks in total.
You can pitch where you desire. Lovely site, good value.

My husband and I came here for 1 night with our 2 year old and dog. When we arrived we were told to just head into the back field - there were no set pitches so we found somewhere relatively out the way (but within the rows that had sort of formed) and parked up and pitched the tent. We went out for a few hours into Matlock and when we came back our tent had been all but surrounded by a large group of people who decided to put their gazebo right next to the sleeping area of our tent. My son had a lovely time playing near our tent and with some other children but when it came to trying to sleep it was practically impossible. The group next to us turned out to be a 30th birthday party and were playing music and talking loudly until gone 11pm (despite us politely requesting they keep it down). I know this is not the fault of the campsite and owners but defined plots would have probably prevented this and this was our experience! Overall the campsite is nice and has a large play area for children and my son loved the pigs. We didn't use the showers but the toilets were pleasant enough and the shop was useful. There were large dogs running around with no leads on (or nearby owners) and the campsite was just a bit crowded and noisy for us.
