A great campsite for a family trip, not so good for a quiet weekend away, though we visited on a bank holiday weekend so it was very busy. Toilets were clean and plenty for the size of the site, but shower cost £1 for five minutes, a lot of campsites provide this for free, and a bit of queuing for shower, as there weren't enough for the number of people visiting on this particular weekend. There was a very limited network coverage and struggled to get a signal for Wi-fi.
The staff at the office were knowledgeable and helpful offering directions when leaflets were not available. The local pub was within easy walking distance and the new management at the Hollybush Inn were very friendly and welcomed families and dogs. All in all a good campsite for the family or group holiday.

Me & my family have just returned from a 4 night stay here. On arrival I was greeted by the owners who both came across as friendly & helpful. As we were non ELH we had a choice in which of the 2 big fields to pitch, both of which were reasonably flat. There was a good play area for the children & plenty of animals around the farm to pet. The showers were ok & you had to pay for them, which I didn't mind, but I couldn't understand why the the paying machine was outside the cubicle ( I had to run out with my towel around me) other than that the water was warm & I had no problem with queuing. Toilets were kept clean on a daily basis & again plenty of warm water.
My only slight niggle which is no fault of the campsite, is the constant sound of the quarry. We had no problem sleeping but I think it all depends on which direction the wind is blowing.
The surrounding area is stunning with plenty of places to visit. We went to Dovedale, The Heights of Abraham & Peveril Castle in Castleton. Plenty of shops in nearby Cromford & Matlock Bath.
All in all a lovely campsite in which we were blessed with nice weather & also not to busy as we left just as the Bank Holiday crowd were about to arrive.

I don't often return to sites as we like to explore different places but I'm happy to return to Middlehills and just got back from a long weekend there! It's a large spacious site and even though it was fully booked, there was plenty of space. It has 2 large fields and you can pitch anywhere.
There is a large play area in one of the fields which is great for kids and our boys, aged 6 and 3 loved it. We pitched quite close to it but you do have a good view of it from many parts of the site. I've not yet found a play area in another campsite that matches up to Middlehills.
All the facilities are appropriate and clean and the rates are excellent value. The owners are investing in the new facilities (toilets, showers and pot washing) and were happy to receive feedback on departure. There was lots of hot water (perhaps too hot!) and some cold for pot washing would have been good!
Other reviews mentioned the quarry noise; we only became slightly aware of it late in the evening and I think this was largely due to wind direction. It did not affect the sleep of any of our party and it certainly wouldn't put me off going again, which I know I will. It's a great site for all ages.

We are a family of 4, first time campers and chose to stay at Middle Hills farm campsite, we had a fantastic weekend, friendly owners, all the facilities were excellent, toilets/showers very clean, it had pot washing facilities too, there was a shop on site which sold food, drinks & camping essentials. There was a huge wooden playground to keep children entertained. |The campsite has 2 fields one bigger than the other, and there was plenty of space for everyone, we weren't all crammed in, even though it was quite busy.
There was a pub at the end of the road too, a lot of nice places to visit near by we went to Paddley Gorge, Black Rocks, Matlock Bath, Millstone Edge.
there is a quarry near by which was working in the day & one of the nights we were there, but it wasn't very loud, not an annoyance at all.
We are looking forward to booking again at Middle Hills Farm.

Just home from a long weekend at Middle Hills. The site got quite busy (warm and sunny August weekend) but we never had to queue for anything. Prices good, facilities good and well maintained throughout our stay. New facility building with indoor wash up and fridge and freezer; odd arrangement for privacy of wash areas and basins either hot or cold, but not both! Shop well stocked for essentials and a bit more, and not dear. Great play area. Site in very good touring location, within 10 miles of Bakewell, Ashbourne and Matlock, with Crich Tramway, Matlock Bath, Chatsworth, Carsington Water, Tissington and High Peak Trails all within easy reach.
As for the quarry, sounded a bit like a combine harvester at a distance, which would regularly work through the night at this time of year.

I really loved this campsite apart from a couple of things. The showers were a bit awkward, the girls had a friend outside with spare money in case it ran out before they'd finished and also shouting out the time left. Ideal it isn't.
The noise from the quarry seemed to go up and down depending what they were doing, a couple of nights it was really loud and it went on 24 hours a day during the week, but seemed to stop during the night at weekends.
Saying that, it didn't stop us sleeping, but probably woke us up earlier than we would have otherwise.
During the week it was lovely and quietish, with the outside of the fields all taken and the inside left for playing and it meant we could see our 2 kids on the playground (really good btw), at the weekend though, every scrap of ground had a tent on it virtually. Very very busy.
There wasn't any bad behaviour though, as you sometimes get late at night.
The new showers aren't yet open and when they are, it will improve the shower situation immensely, I was told that they tried really hard to get them open for this summer, but despite very hard work and lots of money, it just didn't work.
The shop was great, best prices I've ever seen in a campshop I think.
The facilities were cleaned and there was often someone about near them.
I didn't see anyone walking about the big field just to check everything is ok, which I do like to see.
The children's playground was excellent and my kids loved it.
I give this campsite a high rating, but because of the noise and the W/E crowds, I'm not sure I would rush back.

This was a lovely site, with a great children's playground and plenty of space. The showers and loos were always clean and the little shop was handy. It is in an idyllic location but not far from Matlock or Bakewell.
We visited Carsington Water and Chatsworth and thoroughly enjoyed both trips.
The only downside (apart from the weather!) was that the site is near a quarry that is very noisy, the noise was near constant from our arrival on Thursday to Saturday morning, including overnight.
I am surprised that no recent reviews mention it, maybe we were unlucky with the wind direction on our visit, but it would deter me from visiting again which is a shame as everything else was great.

We stayed at this large, family-friendly site with very good facilities for a 3 night break in our tent.
Location: On top of a hill (bit windy!) but perfect for exploring the area around Matlock, Ashbourne etc. Especially good if you want to cycle on the High Peak Trail or Tissington Trail, which are both nearby. Sadly, a little close to a working quarry which continues its rather noisy activity overnight on weekdays - not good for sleep quality! Unfortunately the pub down the road was very dodgy - don't bother visiting.
Facilities: The shower block and toilets were always clean and although there are only 6 showers for everyone, you rarely had to wait for one to be free. (In another block there are 8 more showers, but these were not in use???) Showers were a little bit 'dribbly' and cost £1 for 5 mins, by the way. Children's play area was lovely and the fact there are a few pigs knocking about, added to the 'farm' feel of the place! Didn't use the on-site shop.
Other comments: The nice thing about using a non-electric pitch was that you basically got to pitch up wherever you liked - so get there early on your start day for a good, level spot. My only real criticism was that a group of young people who were partying in our field until almost 2am were not challenged by the site owners, despite there being an 11pm no-music-deadline. After a night of quarry noise on the Friday, this was no fun at all for everyone else - including those in the bottom field.
Would definitely go back as it was such a clean site in a good location.

Great site!
We visited last weekend with our 3 girls on their first camping trip. Excellent facilities, all you need to keep everyone happy. The showers were OK, £1 for 5 mins which was enough but the money box outside the cubicle was a bit awkward. Outdoor washing up which is a bit draughty but ok, good value on site shop, check opening hours. All in all a good experience, the noise from the nearby quarry was a little irritating all through the night but didn't wake the kids. Good location and excellent service from the owners, very friendly and helpful. Would go again and recommend for those with easily bored children!

Excellent family site. Excellent amount of space to pitch and for kids to play. Clean showers toilets etc and owners friendly. Useful shop on site. Kids loved it. Playground good for kids and kept them entertained. Lots to do locally in the way of days out etc and would recommend Matlock Bath although it is a little strange but fun. Lots of hen partys there for some unknown reason. Would return to this campsite anytime
