We found this absolute gem of a site by pure chance in July and we have already been back in August. The site owners are most welcoming and very helpful. The on-site shop is stocked with all you will need for a camping trip and very reasonably priced. We have three boys aged 7, 11 and 13 (13 being 'Complete with Attitude') We made our second visit by choice of all concerned, including Mr Attitude. The children's play area is really good and Attitude really enjoys the moutain-bike trails available so close by.
The toilets and showers on site are kept very clean and there are fridge-freezers available in Reception and in the 'top' field shower/toilet block. Pot washing facilities are ample and the hot water never seems to run out.
The owners strictly enforce the 'Family-Friendly' rules and everyone seems to respect this. You can hire a fire-basket for just £1. 50 per night and fuel can be bought from the camp shop at prices cheaper than Tesco.
On our second visit, I was 'Working From Home' and the O2 Data signal was full-strength and consistent.
We were hoping to visit again for the August Bank Holiday weekend but they are already fully booked. A few people have commented about the quarry noise. Honestly, it disappears after about 5 minutes. It is about the same level as standard office airconditioning. We have really enjoyed our visits to this site and Mr Attitude has just seen me posting this review and fully recommends it himself !

We stayed Wed/Thu/Fri nights in August. The site was about 25% full for the first two nights, and even the Friday crowd only hit about 75%.
The site was beautifully situated, high up a valley 10 mins from Matlock Bath, with stunning views. There was some noise from a nearby quarry, but I soon tuned out.
The facilities were regularly cleaned. The new showers mentioned elsewhere were not yet functioning. No queues at all till Sat morning, then only minimal. Annoyingly, the coin meters were outside the cubicles, but the water was nice and hot. Very few plugs in basins/sinks, but someone had left a bowl in the washing up trough.
The staff were all friendly, chatty and helpful. They happily charged my phone in reception. Oh and I had a strong phone signal on O2, but a slow data connection.
We hired a fire pit one night (£1. 50 + £10 deposit), but the wood from a nearby farm was damp and I felt guilty about smoking out our neighbours till it got going.
The dogs on site were well behaved, but two owners were antisocial and didn't clear up their mess.
There were groups up late celebrating birthdays etc, but all were considerate and kept the noise down.
The play area was a huge hit (our boys are 9yo and 11yo and instantly made friends with the crowd. )
The shop is rather limited, but useful for essentials.
The local pub was great, a real old-school country pub with a fire going (it wasn't even that chilly. ) The boys had the games room (pool, darts and bizarrely a cross-trainer!) to themselves. A local warned us the landlord was temporarily between chefs and doing the cooking himself, so we had some fast food delivered - which had lost its crispness in transit.
Back on the site, we spotted menus for an Indian in Matlock, whose boxes appeared outside lots of tents in the mornings. We drove past and it had a tuc-tuc on the roof! We'll be going there next time.
We instantly fell in love with Scarthin Bookshop, in Cromford, near the junction with the A6 (www. Scarthinbooks. Com). It's a fabulous, higgledy-piggledy old house with a huge selection of old and new crammed into nooks and crannies, and a gorgeous veggie/vegan cafe.
Overall it was a great site and I'll definitely go back and recommend it to friends.

The site owners were very friendly and helpful. I was able to choose my own pitch, which was great. I'd been looking for somewhere peaceful, with great views/ a play area to keep my little boy happy and I got all of this, with the added bonus of the very reasonable tariff. I barely recognise the site from their photos, which certainly don't do it justice - I found the 360 degree views of the Dales breathtaking.
The site atmosphere was very relaxed and I felt comfortable letting my small child play at the on-site park without constant supervision. Everything about the site was good, or 'fine' at least, with clean toilets etc. My bubble was burst somewhat after an idyllic Mon - Fri, by the change to the site Friday night - Sunday lunchtime : it got much too crowded, with people practically on top of each other, in a 'festival' type scenario. I had a group of teenage boys next to me on the Friday night, being really loud, drunk and obnoxious 'til 2AM. I was disappointed this was allowed to happen, as the site's web blurb says they don't permit 'young groups'.
I would very much like to visit the site again, as my experience Mon - Fri was really special, however I'd be very cautious regarding weekends.

This was our first camping trip with our 2 year old and we couldn't have picked a better site!
The toilets and showers were clean and the shop was reasonably well stocked (the couple running it were really helpful). We had a good level area to pitch on and the site was busy but not crowded.
The animals and play area kept our little one thoroughly entertained and we all had a really enjoyable stay.
All in all a great site and very reasonable. We will definitely be going back!

A lovely friendly site, very relaxed! My 6 year old loved the playground and made lots of friends! They loved watching the animals (goats, pigs, horses) kept them entertained for ages!
The staff are really helpful and friendly. You can have campfires and can rent/buy the necessary for this. The children loved roasting marshmallows.
The toilets and washing up facilities are new and are very clean. You can make use of a big fridge and freezer in the pot washing area. New showers are being installed which look like they will be great.
Great campsite if you don't want a pub / clubhouse etc. Prices are very reasonable too, only £15 per night for 2 adults 1 child and two under 4s plus a dog. If you want a proper camping experience would highly recommend. Supermarket not too far away, small shop on site with basic supplies. Lots to do in the area, quite near Gullivers Kingdom.

This is generally a good site although there could be some improvement of the toilet and shower facilities as these are not the best!
The small shop is adequate to pick up supplies and doesn't 'rip you off'
The two main problems for me were the late night noise which nothing was done about and also the ad-hoc way tents were pitched making it difficult to drive to and from your tent.
The site is also considerably further from Matlock than I expected.

We have stayed at this site twice now and will be returning soon. We use a teardrop trailer which they have no problems with.
They allow campfires which works out great for us as we cook over an open fire with a tripod and suspended Dutch oven, most sites won`t allow this.
It is a great family site with lots of open areas and a great kids play area. We only saw our kids (8 and 12) when they were hungry!
The shop is run by 2 very friendly people who are more than happy to help. They stock most essentials as well as lots of pocket money toys and sweets for the kids.
The shower block is clean and has plenty of hot water, the only down side is the fact you have to pay for the showers and the pay slots are outside the cubicles! it also has 2 outside washing up sinks.
The separate portable cabin style toilet block in the middle field is clean despite the fact it is dated. This also has 2 outside washing up sinks
The part finished modernised toilet block in the top field will be great when finished. For some reason though the plumbers forgot to put cold taps or plugs on the sinks. The washing up troughs are inside the building but have no drainers.
There is however a huge fridge and freezer for the use of the campers!

We visited this camp site Friday and would like to say we had a brilliant time – my two boys and I.
We have visited sites before in and around Notts and Derbyshire and I usually pick the one with a pool – however the best critic are kids and my 10 and 11 year olds describe it as the 'best campsite ever!' and 'It was more of an adventure'
Pitched in the bottom field in the top corner, lovely views and so relaxing.
The Shop had the necessary essentials, toilet and washing up facilities were clean – So there you have it – we will be visiting again! Soon I hope.

Just returned from a 3 day camping break at Middle Hills. We pitched in the bottom camping field, it was soft to pitch on after all the rain we have had in the midlands but by the time we left today, the ground had dried out.
Facilities were good, as toilets and pot- washing in both camping fields, downside only 1 shower block which is in the EHU.
Shop on site selling basics. Playground looked great, and our 7 year old son enjoyed playing on it.
We would come again

We stayed here Friday to Monday as were we really impressed with the reviews of the site.
Pros: Lovely views, reasonable prices, clean facilities, great little shop, great playground for children, goats & pot bellied pigs, a lovely couple as wardens who were so lovely to everyone, pitch where you want, not restrictions on tent size and best of all camp-fires.
Cons; 3 showers for the whole site, new block with new loos and 4 new showers didn't have the showers running as yet, the top field grass was at least 6 inches long so you got soaked in the dew, the washing up facilities in the new block was essentially a steel trough in which no bowl would fit, sinks in new blocks had only press only hot taps & no plugs so made it hard to have a wash especially with only 3 showers for women & 3 for men for what must have been over 300 people on site.
Despite this we enjoyed our stay over all but we would like to forget Saturday!
Their website states: ' relaxed, friendly atmosphere. ' and that was certainly the case for us on Friday, Sunday & Monday.
Their website also says 'We do not allow groups and have a strict curfew on noise after 11pm. ' However on Saturday the fields filled up with groups of families and friends which didn't worry us even though some of them were loud. All bar one loud group stopped at 11:00. One group of 3 families & 1 guy, which unfortunately were right by us were more than loud, shouting not talking, totally drunk and amongst other things they swore, allowed their children to play football with torches until 10:50 hitting the balls on other's tents, then at 11:10 gave said children lights on sticks which they threw in the air hitting cars and the adults just laughed, the kids screamed & shouted until past 12:00 & after they had gone to bed the adults carried on in the same vein until gone 2:00am. I could go on with even worse stuff they did but this is a review!
At 9:30 pm myself and my friend went to see the owner & told him we were concerned at the fact that they had been playing Radio 1 very loudly since 2:00 and were shouting using obscenities and generally were quiet intimidating etc. He said he would come and see. To be fair we did see him on the top field with his male warden but they went to a group of men at the other end and told them to quieten down.
We didn't go again that night as we felt very intimidated and knew that if we did they would see us going. Luckily they packed up Sunday morning & went. I went to see the owner & explained what had happened and was very disappointed that he said he'd gone up at 10:30 and heard/seen nothing! That was hard to believe as at 10:30 they were in full flow. He was however very apologetic. So in essence there seems to be a tolerance for loud groups at this site on Saturdays so avoid Saturdays.
If you want good facilities for children and lovely views go here. It has superb potential but avoid a Saturday at all costs.
